In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks with Rosalind Radcliffe, IBM Fellow, CIO DevSecOps CTO, where she is currently working on transforming z/OS into a modern platform with DevSecOps as a showcase for Hybrid Cloud, demonstrating to the world how Hybrid Cloud can work for enterprises. She emphasizes fit-for-purpose by running workloads where it makes the most sense in the Hybrid Cloud environment for business value. They discuss how siloed mainframe and distributed computing organizations today can use the same development processes, with many of the pipelines and toolchains being ported to z/OS. Andre and Rosalind discuss how DevOps has evolved into DevSecOps using automation to help simplify security challenges. She talks about the challenges of running the CIO organization for IBM, of being IBM’s client “zero”, with 6000 developers that build, run, and maintain all of the applications for running IBM. She is currently working on transforming z/OS to be infrastructure-as-code based to simplify management processes with application pipelines that are very highly efficient, with zero trust, no system programmers, all done through automation.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks with Gosia Steinder, IBM Fellow, Hybrid Cloud Research, where she guides research teams in innovative research projects that advance the state of Cloud computing. Gosia began her career working on the first example of a system that offered compute capacity as-a-service to users, before virtualization and infrastructure-as-a-service existed. Then containers came along for managing applications, and she built the first of incarnation of IBM Container Service which ultimately moved to Kubernetes. Over the years, her role has naturally expanded across two areas: advancing the hybrid cloud platform, and ensuring it has the security and compliance capabilities that are required, especially in regulated industries. Together they discuss the challenges of securing multi-cloud solutions as the API services, semantics, and risks vary across Cloud providers. Andre asks her what it means to be a researcher and she describes how the role has changed over time. Gosia is currently working on a new technology from Red Hat, called “kcp”. It is a new spin on Kubernetes, which can be applied to a variety of other problems, not just container management. The kcp technology extracts the desired state management layer and applies it to different contexts by provisioning and managing the lifecycle of resources that have nothing to do with Kubernetes, such as VMs on another cloud, or network resources. You can learn more at https://github.com/kcp-dev/kcp

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks with Ajay Apte, IBM Fellow, IBM Public Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).

Ajay describes the kinds of work that occur behind the scenes to design and build data centers, before you can even provision a VM. Sustainability is becoming a common theme in these podcasts, and Ajay shares that Fortune 500 CEOs are putting sustainability as one of their top three initiatives. Energy consumption is a major driver and he talks about the need to tune power consumption to ensure data centers stay energy efficient. He tells us that customers are more energy conscious than ever, wanting to measure energy consumption not only at the infrastructure level, but now also at the workload level and even at the application level.

He shares that for IAAS, abstraction and standarization is not as important as it is in the software stack. Most Cloud providers are not focusing on standardization. Rather, their efforts are spent on highly optimizing their stack for a standard set of hardware in terms of scale, performance, resiliency, and security.

Finally, Ajay talks about the vast amount of data that is being accumulated and the work to gather meaningful insights for both the Cloud provider and the Cloud consumers. Another interesting space he works on is figuring out how to push more software functionality into hardware.

In this episode, Andre talks with Andrew Hately, Chief Architect of IBM’s Public Cloud, about the past, present, and future of cloud computing. Andrew begins by sharing how his role in a position in South Africa shaped the way he approaches software engineering. He and Andre discuss why there is a hybrid cloud aspect to almost any modern application deployment.

They talk about the emergence of specialized industry clouds which address the reputational and risk concerns of industries like transportation, healthcare, government services, banking, and insurance.

Andre asks about repatriation of software that can occur due to cost, performance, or sovereignty reasons. Andrew explains how some markets require a backup plan to account for this capability. He describes how Open Source software provides a powerful safety net by enabling portability across platforms and eliminating the dependency on a single provider.

Andrew talks about the importance of understanding your data requirements. Legal jurisdictional boundaries are becoming critical, driving the need to be extremely explicit in the way you code your data boundaries.

Finally, Andre asks Andrew his predictions for public cloud. He mentions two competing pressures - lowering our carbon footprint and energy usage versus the growth of digital business. The challenge will be how to build something that is always on and always secure, while still allowing for the computationally expensive data access and sovereignty.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks with Francesca Rossi, IBM Fellow and AI Ethics Global Leader from IBM Research.

Francesca shares the main goal of AI Ethics is to ensure that Artificial Intelligence advances in a way that is aligned to human values, in terms of fairness, transparency , and explainability, rather than creating an alternative form of intelligence. She talks about how machine learning models can inject bias into AI recommendations due to how the data is collected, how the training data is labeled, and how we make decisions during development. To counteract this bias, she describes the use of tools to detect bias in the training data, the AI model, or the output of the AI model. But just having the tooling is not enough. Diverse teams and robust training and educational material are required for developers to understand how to use and integrate the tools with their existing development processes. She reminds us that part of AI Ethics is ensuring that our clients will use the AI technology in line with our ethics and principals. This is done by employing a risk assessment process that considers the properties of the technology itself, the client’s planned use of the technology, and their history of using technology in an appropriate and responsible way. When the topic of data sharing comes up, Francesca talks about how the GDPR regulations in Europe were the very first regulations to govern how data is collected and shared. Francesca concludes by talking about ethics around the emerging field of Neurotechnology, reading and even writing data to our central nervous system and the ethical issues with this technology.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks with Donna Dillenberger, IBM Fellow, CTO IBM Cloud Systems Research. Donna shares her definition of Cloud native and how that paradigm has driven development DevOps practices -- specifically how we build applications, connecting Cloud APIs and flowing data through the Cloud services. Together, Andre and Donna discuss the implications of serverless computing. Donna explains that with serverless, the application developer no longer has to worry about storage, network, and compute resources. But that means the underlying infrastructure becomes even more critical as it needs to sense the changing workloads and adapt accordingly, driving even more demand on infrastructure. She contrasts this Cloud behavior with mainframe systems that are elastic by design and even suggests that the mainframe is the first cloud computer. Donna describes her current work on pervasive AI with AI accelerators, that deliver fraud detection, stolen identities, trade optimization, and medical imaging, which enables AI to be truly deployed in production in the Cloud.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Nataraj Nagaratnam, IBM Fellow, CTO of IBM Cloud Security. Andre begins by asking how to approach security and Raj explains that it starts by identifying the risks that need to be mitigated which then drives the security policies, controls, processes, and technologies that are required. Andre and Raj discuss the importance of DevSecOps and how it is changing the fundamental thinking of security as a forethought instead of an afterthought. They discuss how the recent Log4j vulnerability elevated the topic of supply chain security, as it's not enough to secure what you build, but now also you need to consider what dependencies you consume. Raj provides an example of a specialized security technology, Hyper Protect Crypto Services, included with IBM Cloud for Financial Services. He explains how built-in controls in this Cloud enable customers to focus on innovating their business and building new applications. Andre asks Raj to explain how to address the large number of standards and compliance requirements across industries and geographies, which leads to a discussion about how to make compliance as code. Raj concludes by explaining that data security and privacy are pushing the boundaries, especially as we expand into hybrid cloud, and that the company that's going to innovate and lead is going to pave the way for more secure and private environments.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre and Chris Ferris, IBM Fellow, CTO Open Technology, discuss Open Source Technologies. They talk about what constitutes an open source project - that its not just putting code in a public repo, but its about inviting others to collaborate on the project and building a community around it.    Andre and Chris discuss that open source is not just about putting a project out for people to use or contribute to - but to put it under open governance, Kubernetes as an example. Andre and Chris talk about the success criteria for open source projects, how it is a diverse set of projects and different committers rather than a single vendor.  Chris also talks about a survey that showed that 65% of developers believed that its more important to know the underlying opensource APIs rather than the vendor specific APIs as it allows them more flexibility in terms of career. In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Rachel Reinitz, IBM Fellow, Vice President, Founder & CTO IBM Garage.  Rachel talks about how the Garage started and  its principles of design thinking and agile development became very popular with customers, so much so that a number more locations were opened. The IBM Garage methodology innovatively helps in taking big ideas and testing them out - and has a systematic process to evaluate ideas and prototype them.  Andre talks about repeatability and automation and their importance to Hybrid Cloud applications. They also discuss the dark side of hybrid cloud which is the  management of its many moving parts - and the balance between being too course grained and too fine grained while creating microservices.  Rachel talks about using design thinking and marrying that with agile development, peer programming, and test driven development to create products that delight customers. The foundation of the garage is to deliver at speed on ideas that matter. Andre and Rachel discuss the challenges of having design workshops virtually and the role of technology.  They talk about how they innovate and yet maintain consistency - basically being able to adapt and repeat what works and learn from what does not. They talk about the importance of diversity in all aspects of the team.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Maja  Vukovic, IBM Fellow, AI for Application Modernization.  Andre and Maja discuss if the meaning of an application being cloud native only means it has microservices or if a minimum functional computational unit upon which the application is built has to be defined. Maja talks about using AI for code to understand the applications and help customers "untangle" their code and help them decide which parts of the application to refactor. Maja talks about application modernization in two parts - technology and development process modernization - to culturally shift the organization to the devops model.  They discuss how AI can be used to measure the quality of the resulting microservices after an application re-write to convert a monolith to microservices.  Maja talks about using AI to enable rapid containerization and code refactoring.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Roland Barcia, IBM Fellow - Cloud & Data Platform Adoption, IBM Technology (CSM, Tech Sales, Assets, & Tech Garage). They dive deeper into deployment and management space - specifically Day 2 management.  Roland talks about what he thinks the center of gravity for building hybrid applications is -  pipelines to automate deployment of clusters, shared databases, and testing tools. They delve deeper into "layering of pipelines" to ensure maximum automation and portability.  Roland and Andre talk about how to structure the teams so that applications are scalable and easily deployed and not broken into a million pieces because of over-indexing on the "micro" in micro-services. Andre talks about how to efficiently deploy and run microservices and in this case why "less is more". Andre and Roland discuss GitOps, as not just a one time deployment, but more as a management of desired target state, where changes are managed through git which is the one source of truth.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Grady Booch, IBM Fellow; Chief Scientist for Software Engineering. Grady works in embodied cognition and artificial general intelligence and helping customers architect really large systems. He talks about the birth of UML at a time when there was a necessity for a language that was able to specify, visualize and construct complicated, distributed systems and how the UML has been adapted today by biologists to describe cell mechanisms. Andre and Grady discuss the different aspects of cloud - from where the applications and data are physically located, to the architecture view - how to run an application on cloud vs as a monolith - depending on the point of view, cloud is different things to different roles. Andre and Grady talk about whether different architectures are needed for on-prem vs cloud application and Grady talks about the book he is writing about software architecture patterns. They also discuss the importance of architecture patterns to build systems that are scalable, reliable and secure and not just feature-rich. They touch upon the different types of architectural patterns based on domains such as event-driven, stateless, caching, and how to pick which pattern to use based on cost and application needs. For example, the architecture of a social application will be very different than a transactional application to process financial data. Grady talks about the new series he is working on about computing that explores art, faith and what it means to be human.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Rama Akkiraju, IBM Fellow: CTO, AIOps.  They delve deeper into  the principles of Operations  - that if everything was done right - the systems should be self-healing, self-monitoring and self-managing. IT management is to observe everything, then detect when problems occur, or predict before they occur,  diagnose and fix them. Rama talks about reactive and proactive incident management - one is about putting out fires after they have been started, and the other about predicting the fire, but the best way is to prevent the problem altogether.  Andre and Rama talk about how to use AI to detect anomalous behavior, and the dilemma of SRE's while they look at data coming from  many different sources such as logs, metrics to decide which ones are actionable and which ones to ignore. Rama also discusses the role of AI in IT management such as  grouping log anomalies, prioritizing them, and suggesting solutions based on past actions, with the option for the human in the loop to further  fine tune the models.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Jason McGee, IBM Fellow, VP and CTO, Cloud Platform about IBM Cloud. They discuss how to build, operate, scale and secure applications across a combination of on-prem, cloud and edge locations and the challenges with building such applications.  They talk about the cloud as a manifestation of the as-a-service consumption model at the infrastructure and application layers and how  more and more customers want technology as a service.   They touch upon the fact that some aspects of application development have not changed for hybrid cloud, but application developers now need to be intentional about the features they use on clouds that are specific to particular clouds. They discuss how to migrate  monolithic applications to the cloud, and how the gitops model is gaining popularity as customers push as much of the operational lifecycle into the toolchain that leads into production.

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Mike Kaczmarski, IBM Fellow, CTO Cloud Pak Shared Services, about the Cloud Pak platform-operator. They discuss that biggest difference cloud has made is design patterns - making it easier and more ubiquitous to scale workloads across geographies, and resources. Andre and Mike talk about how having a platform makes it easy for a customer to pick capabilities, but also abstract other things such as workload placement, load balancing and automation and how the platform brings other non-functional requirements for free. By using the platform, customers can easily integrate different capabilities into modern cloud environments and focus on writing applications as opposed to trying to glue all the pieces together. Mike also talks about using gitops and automation to deploy environments that are repeatable, governed, and managed, where customers can take the deployment artifacts and use them across environments and releases to test and deploy. Andre and Mike discuss how some customers like to run highly sensitive workloads on-premise, but other customers are moving capabilities to the cloud to take advantage of the economies of scale and pricing on the cloud - written on top of our platform those capabilities would be a lot easier to move to the cloud.
They discuss the important traits of a platform - footprint, consistency for customers, integration and ability to share services.

In this episode of Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre and Rob High, IBM Fellow, Vice President and CTO, IBM Networking and Edge Computing, discuss hybrid cloud on the edge.  Andre and Rob talk about the differences between cloud computing and edge computing - that cloud computing assumes a degree of  homogeny and dynamism via scaling in the cloud and edge devices are very diverse and mostly in physically moving devices like cars and manufacturing equipment.  Rob stresses the importance of autonomous systems that take responsibility to ensure the right software is in the right place at the right time across billions of diverse compute systems. They talk about how applications on the edge have to make do with fewer resources and deal with "compute islands" that may or may not be connected.  Andre and Rob discuss the concept of "cloud-out" where the processing is offloaded to the edge for performance, cost and privacy reasons.
