I used to call my friends whenever having something to tell. However, during my 2 month solo trip in Europe, I had no choice but to “talk” to my diary because of lots of reasons. From maintaining travel pace to saving internet data haha.
So here it is! I kept 2 journals during the 2 month trip. It records something funny, something unfortunate and lots of my story. It's not just about my thoughts, my reflection but also inspirations I collected from the people I met on the way.
Here to share with my friends who ask my stories but I didn’t respond perfectly. (Cuz I have so many, I have no idea what to start!) and with you who have a curious soul:)

In the morning, I was thinking of fulfilling some last wishes in Helsinki. One is to go to Sauna again, another is to go to the bar where I wasn’t allowed to get in a month ago because I didn’t have EU vaccination proof, and the other is to try a famous fish soup. However, none of these things went smoothly.

Around 9:00, I was waiting for my flight at 10:20 to Helsinki. Suddenly a black woman with her daughter approached. She looked frustrated, which was a big contrast to her daughter’s innocent face.

I was thinking of going to Toledo, a city near Madrid and was recommended by a Taiwanese girl I met in Krakow. But I hadn’t decided when. After the test was done, I took the bus to go back to the hostel. However, on half way, when the bus passed by Madrid Atocha station, I was suddenly thinking: “Since I was outside, how about going to Toledo right now!”

Because of the late sleep yesterday, I woke up late. After freshening up, I went to a convenience store to buy some bread for breakfast. Argentine girl woke up at 12. She told me she was gonna retrieve her passport at a nearby hotel. But before that, she wanted to fill her stomach first. We then went to Burger king. While she was eating, we started to talk about relationships. She mentioned a guy who was obviously chasing her recently.

While I was lingering in the park, I suddenly felt a bit bored. “Madrid seems not that surprising to me. I feel like I need some interaction with people.“ Then God seemed to hear my wish. At night, I was back in the hostel, thinking I was gonna have a dull night. However, while I was looking for my stuff in the room, the girl who just moved-in and slept in front of me came to say hi.

That was a long day. All I did was basically taking a train. After achieving the goal of eating breakfast in a shop, I then chilled out in the hostel until the departure time approached. At 14:50, I boarded the train, planning to have a make-up sleep during the 7.5 hrs journey. Some minutes later, the driver came to the cabin, asking who was gonna go to Madrid and blablabla.

It was probably the most unfortunate day during my journey. I lost 300 euros because of a scam.
That day, I only had one plan, which was going to the beach and seeing the sunset. Since my schedule was loose, I then started to plan my trip to Madrid. I checked the train ticket which was a bit expensive, so I was looking for other ways to go. I then found BlaBlaCar, which at the beginning, I thought was a blessing, however, it was toxic.

My mood was extremely light that morning because I saw something joyful. When I walked out from Center Valencia Youth Hostel, I saw people having breakfast in the plaza while enjoying the company of soft sunshine and lovely orange trees. The scene alone was enough to make me feel delighted and at the same time to make up for the poor sleep last night, which was caused by 2 guys watching videos without using earphones in the room.

The first day when I was hanging around the Barcelona Cathedral, I found a brand selling shoes called Mumka. I was attracted by its special illustrations on the sneakers and hesitated to buy a pair. I couldn’t make up my mind until the next day.
“Love in college seems to be a wonderful experience in life.” But unlike shoes, it’s a thing people will never find again once lost.

Fine! I shouldn’t be bothered by such a small thing. “Today I’m gonna go on a Gaudi adventure! Nothing can stop me!” I then went out.
I didn’t regret choosing the parade over the beach. But I definitely regret that I didn’t spend a longer time in such a surprising city.

A good hostel, a good start. And fortunately, the city is able to keep the start. Barcelona is such a charming city that it’s hard to resist its temptation. I was especially fascinated by that mysteriously ancient romance and the incredibly vivid atmosphere.

To avoid what happened in Bratislava on Day 32, this time I decided to go scouting in advance, which was to check the stop where I was gonna take the shuttle to the airport the next day. That’s the main task. As to the rest of time, well, it was saved to complete other small tasks, and take a final look at Budapest.

“I’m gonna leave! Don’t you wake up to say goodby to me?” Emma said. I first tried to make my morning mind clear, then sat straight on my bed and finally say bye-bye!” That’s the end of our trip. Emma then left for the airport, and I left for a north town called Esztergom in the north suburb.

After downtown was kind of well-explored, we then decided to go to suburb. Szentendre or St. Andru is a small town in the suburb of Budapest which only takes a 40-minute metro from downtown. We went there not only because we wanted to explore different views but also because we wanted to visit the place where a music video from a famous Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai’s was shot.

On the square, there’s a Millennium Monument featuring some important national leaders and 7 chieftains of the Magyars who conquered the Carpathian basin in 9th. It was built in 1896 to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian conquest and is also a Tomb of the unknown soldiers.
Szimpla Kert, a famous ruin bar in Budapest. it’s like a combination of industrial style and street culture, which creates a vibe making me so fascinated about.

Fisherman’s Bastion, which serves as an observatory now. From there, you can overlook Hungarian Parliament Building on the other bank of Danube River. The parliament radiated a kind of treacherous beauty under sprinkling weather on that day.
Buda Castle, which is situated on hills and was first build in 1247 for resisting Mongolian’s invasion.

The hill is a great place to appreciate the city view. On top of the hill, there’s a Freedom memorial and a liberty statue- A lady holding palm leaf. The memorial was first erected in 1947 to commemorate the Soviet liberation of Hungary from Nazi occupation during WWII. But it was turned into memorizing those who sacrificed for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary in 1989 because after WWII, the Soviet became the one who occupied and suppressed Hungary, instead of liberating it.
The spring water of Gellert Bath is said to be discovered in the 15th century. The water comes from Gellert hill and is said to have some healing function because it contains some natural substances.

I got up at 6:30 and headed to the bus station without eating breakfast. The departure time was still at 8:20 and I was thinking: “Come on! Almost 2 hours earlier, even if there’s any accidence, do I need to worry about running out of time?”
Around 12, I arrived at Avenue hostel. After check-in, I went upstairs. “Hey, you finally make it!” She’s Emma. A friend of mine, whom I met in Rugby team when I was in college. She was doing exchange program in Finland then, but I didn’t visit her there. We then came up the idea of spending Christmas and New Year together in Budapest. On that day, we first ate lunch in a restaurant called Menza, and then went to a Christmas market around St. Stephen's Basilica, and finally appreciated the beauty of Hungarian Parliament Building along Danube River.

Some days ago, I checked where I should take the bus to Budapest. I found the bus station was near the National Theater where I had visited before. So I thought it was fine to just know the rough direction. As to the detail, I could check it on the way. However, I had no idea that Bratislava is such a complicated city.
At night, my room came in a Columbian girl. Because she and Ecuadorian siblings are both from South America. So I mentioned them to her a little bit. And that was another moment that made me feel the world is really small!

Have you ever bothered with the idea “See, I knew it!” by yourself? I have. And I did in lots of times. Because I would not only be upset by the result in the end, but also start to prevent that happen beforehand, which is definitely exhausted. I wanted to walk more far away from where I stayed that day because the next day I would just chill at hostel, preparing to say goodbye to Bratislava.
Walking continuingly, I arrived at “old bridge”, which looks not old at all, rather, its green color just makes it look young and vivid. The bridge crosses Danube river, which in my imagination, is supposed to be romantic because… it makes me think of the famous Austrian musician Johann Strauss’s musical piece, The Blue Danube.
Soon, I then planned to walk back to hostel. And because the National theater and the blue church are on my way, so I went to take a look.

It was a pretty boring day. I basically did nothing. In the morning, I wrote my journal and planned my journy. In the afternoon, I talked with the French volunteer and then hanged around the area near hostel. At night, I finally got something to do.

I woke up in a good mood that morning. I first walked around the main square and then went to Bratislava castle. The architectures in main square are neat. And the decoration there is moderate, which gave me an approachable feeling. Bratislava castle is on top of a hill. Personally, I think it’s a good place to calm down.
At 11 pm. I went to the farewell party with a French and a Portuguese volunteer there. A girl named Lily just had an eye contact with me, and invited me to join their darts game. Lily then paid for me straightforwardly because I didn’t bring any cash, and I finished the 75% shot and the normal shot candidly. Well, what happened thereafter was… I got 100% full Dutch courage to strike up a conversation with a handsome Belgian receptionist I met on my first day there.

I felt quite delighted walking around the Stephen Plaza. Compared to Krakow, the vibe there is obviously more vivid. However, unfortunately, the more walks I took, the more upset I had towards this city. The burden is too heavy to appreciate the city. And the most pathetic thing was I had to wait my bus in the semi-outdoor metro station, which made me freezing cold.

I first bought a braided ring-shaped bread, which is sold at stands and is said to be a specialty in Krakow. I then bought a Polish donut with chocolate flavor. And I also bought some fruits with chocolate. But to be honest, because of its tourist price, I was hesitated to buy this at the beginning. Finally I went to a convenient store to buy my favorite snake in Poland, chocolate waffle-”Dare”!

I was planning to hang around Jewish Square that afternoon. After eating breakfast, I had nothing to do so I went back to my room. Then I started to talk to my Japanese roommate for 2 hours.
Walking around the Jewish square. I felt like I do love the feeling there. There’s no stunningly big and colorful building, rather, it’s plain. Not the boring kind, but the charming kind. Just turn into a corner, you will feel being in a different world.

He seemed to know what I was thinking then, and continued sharing his story. He said in American society, people are told to have a concrete goal in life. You must know what you wanna do as a career. But what he likes is to talk with people and to explore the world.
“I’m not fit in our society, so that’s why I’m here!”
“I like what I’m doing now. I’m comfortable with uncomfortable.”
He was confident, but not arrogant. Easy, but not lazy.
His easy attitude, is the thing I never forget. And the thing I definitely need to learn.

I was going to take a bus to Auschwitz concentration camp. When the journey passed more than a half, there were only me and an elder couple on the bus. The couple then got off. And while my brain was still trying to figure out things, suddenly, the driver turned the sign board labeled ”Auschwitz” to the back, which made me start to be nervous because I thought it was as a gesture to say “this is the final destination, we won’t take any travelers from now on.”
I finally arrived at Auschwitz concentration camp. Looking at the stretching-down tree branches with the grey sky as background, a gloomy feeling just came. If someone asks me how I felt when I visited there. I would say: I was blank. I'm not sure which situation I was in, but there’s one thing I am 100% sure, which is: “The human spirit must be kept alive.”

After waking up, I went to toilette. While I was “releasing” my physical need, suddenly, someone rotated the doorknob 2 times, which made me feel really bad. And when I opened the door, a guy with an apparently upset face was looking at me. He, is my Israel roommate on whom back to that time, I had a bad impression.
I then went to Wieliczka Salt Mine. It takes as wide as 287 km, as deep as 327 m and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage. It got started mining from 13th and ended in late 20th. Attending a tour is compulsory. And it was during the tour, the greek guy I met earlier in front of restroom came to say something, I swear, the most unreal words I had ever heard. Since then on, I started to pray for the end of the tour.

At around 1:30 pm, I was still at chillout hostel cuz my bus was at 3:30, and going to bus station only takes 20 minutes, so I rested a little bit there. I was sitting in public area, writing my journal and observing people. There was a woman cooking in the kitchen. She seems to work there. She wore all black. The cut is fit but not tight. She looks icy but also elegant. From her neat manner and outfit, I would describe her as a person with great discipline. And I don’t know why, she just made me think of the character of the movie Nanny McPhee.

My first day in Warsaw started with something unfortunate. I didn't enjoy a chill morning as planned, rather I spent lots of time searching for a supermarket. And the most exhausting thing was I kept falling into dilemma with trivial things, which were definitely not a big deal for me now. And it is during the recalling process that I realized how uneasy and stubborn I was, and also realized how much growth I had gained from my trip.
Warsaw old town isn’t the same as the one I visited in Stockholm or Tallinn. Though, they all have allies, pebble roads, and colorful ancient buildings, Warsaw old town radiates a totally different feeling. it radiates a gloomy feeling. Like it went through something devastating and then developed a serious character to protect itself. Those green, pink, yellow color are no longer vivid here. Rather, it seemed to be covered with a gray veil.
Ended the day with a delicious Polish dumplings and a "Dare" snack.

The last day in Paris, I went to l’arc de triomphe and le musee du Louvre. At l’arc de triomphe, its grandeur and the tomb of the unknown soldier who died in WWI there gave me an awe feeling. As to le musee du Louvre, the most impressing thing isn’t how many masterpieces I can see there, but how approachable they are!

Eiffel tower is a professional model, who always looks gorgeous in a photo. Pantheon and the architectures there are magnificent, but they are too magnificent to be close to for me. And the most important thing was: “How can I find a restroom in such stunningly-magnificent area?” I then took a 15 minute bus to a seemingly more approachable library for using restrooms, but things went contrary to my original plan...

The view in Montmartre was fantastic, but the experience in metro was pathetic.
There are lots of things to see in Paris, Place de la Concorde, Jarden des Tuileries, Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, Musée du Louvre, Jardin des champs-élysées, Grand Palais, Arc de Triomphe... And the most amazing thing about these landmarks is that they are all situated on one line!
Ms. Pyramid is really charming. 10 minutes ago, she wore a one-piece dress to have a cup of tea. 10 minutes later, she changed the dress into a gown to attend a cocktail party. But fortunately, Charline and I didn't have the privilege...

The Copenhagen Main Library, what makes it become my wish list all started from a photo I saw by chance in 2017. The photo in the collection called “World Seen Through My Eyes” by Danish Artist Morten Nordstrøm inspired me to visit the library.
The Little Mermaid, is also on my wish list. I took 30 minutes walk for it, but just saw it in 3 seconds...

On the day, I found 2 great design in Sweden and Denmark respectively. One is waiting room and the other is stroller bike. They are both well-designed and impressed me a lot.
I then visited strøget, a famous shipping street, and New Harbor. In Denmark, everything looks like in a fantasy harmony. The vibe there is like a well-organized fairy tale, and so is the price...

After walking all day long in Stockholm, I spent a pre-Christmas night at my friend-Karin's home. We drank classic alcohol, lighted candles, and made wishes towards cinnamon cookies! Based on the ritual, if the cookie breaks into 3 pieces, it means the wish will come true! Did I succeed? Let's figure it out!

On the last day in Finland, I went to Kotiharjun Sauna in Helsinki.
When the host asked me if I needed to buy a towel, I said " No, thank you" with extreme confidence. However, in just 5 minutes, I went back to him, asking if I could buy one. Because what I saw in the changing room made me misunderstood something. 😂
Finnish sauna is really like a magic. It somehow makes people feel the purest form of ourself. At the moment, I felt like that was the first time I embraced my whole body so sincerely and unreservedly.

The journey of Estonia was so interesting! I did lots of things there.
I listened to Finnish songs on cruise, explored the movie-like city, tasted the delicious pancakes, visited Estonian library, enjoyed the tea time in the oldest cafe in Estonia.

While waiting for the bus, I was thinking all the things I experienced these days in Inari. And I just couldn't help but be grateful for it healing my soul.
Back to Taiwan, I realized it was "awe" that I experienced in Inari healed my anxiety when I happened to read a book called "Anxiety is really strange” by Steve Haines.
Inari is such a blessed place where I'll NEVER EVER forget.

In the morning, when I was seeing around in a white world, the alien feeling I got yesterday was just wiped out. All I feel was peaceful.
The weather is cold there, but people are not cold at all. Finns are actually very friendly and I was so fascinated by their "comfortable distance".
In the afternoon, I got a bad news: I missed aurora yesterday because I was taking a shower then. And it was cloudy, I might not see aurora. Fortunately, I finally saw a mercurial waltz dancer in the sky thanks for Santa's blessing.

At around 10 pm, I arrived in Inari, a place in Lapland best for appreciating aurora.
The moment my feet landed on the ground, I just got a weird feeling. Then I realized I truly came to a place which is far from my origin. To trace aurora, I stood alone in -22C extreme darkness, but unfortunately ending up with seeing nothing.
I was hoping I would be lucky tomorrow, which was my last night in Lapland, or my aurora trip would be a failure.

Walking in the Sibelius Park may be romantic, but soon the coldness just wiped out all the feeling.
I finally couldn’t bear the coldness, so I went to Cafe Regatta to order a cup of hot chocolate. But what I didn't expect was the air , which was so cold that my hot chocolate soon became warm chocolate and then cool chocolate...Even the candle light in front of me was just put out by the pitiless cold air.
What happened thereafter was I gave in to the reality, changing taking a walk into taking a bus.

In the morning
While I was waiting for my night train to Rovaniemi at hostel, I bumped into a group of adorable kids from Kosovo. They stared at me for a while, until one of them said "Hi" to me. At the moment, other kids were just getting excited, and making some gestures to him, which seemed to say “you are so brave!” That's how we started to talk.
At night
on train. I was about to take something out from my backpack put on the overhead racks. Suddenly, a loud and continuous beep sounds just occurred and lasted for 1 minutes. I was panic and sweated heavily then. Fortunately it stopped in the end. After this tragedy, I soon put the device into a deep pocket, and stayed on my seat for a long time before going to toilette afterwards.

Because of my stupid mistake, my plan for starting a lovely day with a box of milk just failed.
Fortunately, the city seemed able to cast some magic, I soon forgot those unlovely and was distracted by other things, especially the construction workers. Their appearance just broke my stereotype, and made me think about something seriously.
It was again, an unsolved question, but I definitely will put it in my mind forever.

At Istanbul airport, I bumped into an extraordinarily kind Turkish guy. He lended his charger to me, even though I had no problem charging my phone with my USB cable. I was pretty confused then with countless questions just popping up in my head. Though in the end, my question wasn't spoken out and solved, it definitely became a piece of interesting "puzzle" of my journey.
When arriving at the destination-Helsinki, Finland, everything was just felt so right and cozy.
On the bus to downtown, I took heed of everything around me:
The invisible seating rule on bus.
The teenager who took off the mask immediately when getting off.
The teenager who showed his gratitude to the driver in a very pure way.
When I finally arrived at the hostel, the guy smoking outside who looked calm, mysterious, and a little blue, just thereafter somewhat concluded the Finland I know.
( Btw let me be clear here, it was his behavior that I think might somehow conclude the Finns, not necessarily his appearance:) )

I was delightfully preparing for going out, but suddenly found my only wind-proof jacket was gone.
At the beginning I was pretty calm, but then slowly and slowly, I couldn't maintain my mental peace anymore!
I went back and forth to ask for help from the receptionist, and even saying that I wanted to confront with the thief.
What happened thereafter was that I also couldn't help but laugh at my dramatic behavior 😂
