Pete Steinberg is a leadership and innovation expert with extensive experience consulting with top Fortune 500 professionals. He also has more than 20 years of experience as an elite rugby coach, coaching the USA Women’s Rugby Team at two World Cups and the Rio Olympics.

As a former U.S., international, and Olympic sports coach and commentator for major outlets such as CBS, ESPN, and Fox Sports, Pete has a track record of bringing teams to victory.

He has won 11 National Championships with the Penn State Women, MARFU Men, and Temple Women rugby teams. He has also worked with the Men’s Eagles and other age-grade programs within the U.S. National team pathway. Pete was the Head of Coach Development for USA Rugby, leading the program as it became integrated into the World Rugby programs.

Pete is also the President of Innovative Thought, a business consultancy focused on leadership and organizational development. Tyler Matthews is an NBA skills/ performance trainer and the founder of FastFenom Basketball Training.
Tyler started training basketball players locally in Central Florida when he was 18, out of driveways, backyards, parks and rec centers.

In 2017, Tyler embarked on a new chapter in his career, landing a job in Michigan. Here, he had the opportunity to work alongside one of the most respected basketball trainers in the industry, honing his skills and knowledge.

Our guest this week, Matthew Jackson, found his passion early on in life and has been playing basketball for as long as he can remember.

Basketball has taught him many valuable lessons in life and allowed him to create a life he loves, centered around the sport. What started as a young boy with a dream of playing basketball and finding success and purpose alongside it has turned into him dedicating his life to changing the world through basketball.

His basketball career has opened numerous doors, allowed him to travel the world, created lifelong friendships, and allowed him to give back. His goal is to help make the same opportunities for others he was given and will enable them to use their passion for the sport to change their lives, just like his.

Thus, Matthew decided to turn his lifelong dream into a reality and launched his non-profit, Basketball and a Dream Foundation, in 2022.

He played basketball at Price High School and helped lead the team to a State Championship in 2005. After graduating, he went on to continue his education and basketball career at Humboldt State and Skyline College, where he majored in Business.

In doing so, he took the fundamentals he learned and found a way to blend his business mentality with a passion for basketball.

After college, Matthew began his coaching career at Revere Middle School and later Palisades High School. He then broadened his basketball career by joining In The Lab as a coach/trainer and Podcast Host.

In the many years since, his relationship with In The Lab has continued to evolve, leading to their partnering with Basketball and a Dream Foundation as their official non-profit organization.

In Spring 2017, he interned for Wasserman and assisted with pre-NBA draft workouts. Matthew went on to coach and mentor the Palisades High Varsity Basketball team as an assistant coach and helped guide them to a City Championship.

His success and relationship with Palisades High inspired him to create a youth basketball program alongside the school in 2019. As the founder and CEO of the Pacific Hoops Youth Basketball Program, he coaches teams of kids aged 12-17.

He prides himself on being a mentor and wants to help create the same opportunities for them that have gotten him to where he is today.

Transforming Basketball is a vehicle to share the independent research and practical applications that Alex Sarama has conducted since 2016. Transforming Basketball focuses on using ecological dynamics as a framework to view basketball performance and reconceptualize the role of the coach and basketball practitioner.
An ecological approach underpins the methodologies adopted by Transforming Basketball—the five design principles of a nonlinear pedagogy manifest in applying a constraints-led approach. Rather than viewing skills as techniques or patterns to be acquired and internalized, skill is viewed as an emergent property predicated around the relationship between the player and their environment.
Transforming Basketball exists to help the basketball world move beyond traditional paradigms that have existed for decades. Through many resources, including blogs, podcasts, online course-based learning, live events, and consulting, the basketball world can benefit from evidence-based ideas.

In this week's episode we sit down and talk with Championship Culture Coach Becky Beaulieu.

Becky began her athletic career when she was three years old, playing soccer, track, gymnastics, and fast-pitch softball. When she hit my peak height at 4’11, my destiny was sealed as a competitive gymnast.

She became a two-time National Champion at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She was a member of four national championship teams and earned seven All-American honors.

She coached at UW-La Crosse for two years before spending 18 years as the mental health liaison and head gymnastics coach for the University of Wisconsin-Stout. At UW-Stout, she helped lead teams to 2nd and 3rd place finishes at the National Championships and coached the first team in school history to a conference championship.

She was fortunate to coach eight individual national champions, 66 All-Americans, and two athletes who qualified and competed at NCAA Division I Regionals.

She also worked as the mental health liaison for athletics, where she counseled and mentored athletes from basketball, track, softball, golf, and more. Additionally, she culture coached and gave leadership talks to Men’s basketball.

She is passionate about serving athletes and enhancing team culture through observations, interventions, and recommendations learned through my 20 years of working in NCAA athletics and time spent as a licensed psychologist.

BriAnna Garza is a professional shooting coach, instructional designer, and owner of Shooters Shoot Training — a mentorship program that focuses on both shot development and thought development.

BriAnna was never the biggest, strongest, or fastest player on any team, so she learned at a very young age to focus her time on developing her vision, IQ, and most importantly—her shot. BriAnna played high school basketball in Kyle, TX, where she led the region in both assists and 3-pointers made. She graduated in 2010 as All-State in basketball and music (percussion).

After high school, BriAnna went on to play college ball on a full scholarship to the NAIA DI, Baker University. After leading her team to an NAIA Sweet 16 her senior season, BriAnna was voted as conference Player of the Year (HAAC), and was named an All-American. BriAnna graduated in 2015 with a BA in Psychology and she still holds women’s basketball records for assists and career points at her Alma Mater.

Following her undergraduate work, BriAnna made it her mission to learn everything she could about what it means to teach shooting effectively.

She continued her education at the University of North Texas, where she served as a Sport Psychology consultant for the NCAA DI basketball teams on campus. In 2017, she graduated with a Master of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology, with an emphasis in Skill Acquisition.

BriAnna now runs her own hybrid, year-round training and mentorship program, Shooters Shoot, where she travels the world teaching providing athletes (youth to WNBA/NBA) with holistic human development and expert shot training.

In the winter of 2023, BriAnna also accepted the role of Chief Operations Officer for Strata Athletics, based in Austin, TX. Strata runs 8-week basketball academies in the Spring and Fall, and was founded on developing athletes in fun, presence, joy, and a culture of error. It is a place where athletes learn to view failure and mistakes as exactly what they are—inevitable steps towards progress.

Introducing our most recent guest on the Bridging Impact Podcast, Coach Jude Gutierrez, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, born in 1998. From an early age, Coach Gutierrez fostered a profound love for athletics, finding inspiration in the lessons, camaraderie, and fitness opportunities they offer, irrespective of one's background.

His journey into the world of athletics began with a deep-rooted passion for basketball during elementary school. As he progressed through school, he studied the sport intensively and became an active participant. Coach Gutierrez's dedication was evident as he delved into various videos, studying legends from the 1970s and meticulously learning the training methods of iconic figures like Kobe Bryant.

Transitioning from a player to a coach, Coach Gutierrez's coaching career took flight at Bosque School at the end of 2020, where he assumed the role of Head Coach of the C team for two seasons. His coaching prowess further developed in 2023 when he was appointed Head Coach of the D1 New Mexico 17 U team under the guidance of Coach Malik Waters, leading to a successful inaugural club season. In the fall of 2023, Coach Gutierrez found a home at La Cueva High School under the mentorship of Coach Eric O'rell.

Coach Gutierrez's dedication to basketball extends beyond the court. He remains steadfast in his ongoing study of the sport, driven by a profound desire to impart knowledge, cultivate community, foster sportsmanship, and mentor young athletes embarking on their journey to adulthood. His commitment to teaching, building community, and guiding aspiring athletes sets a remarkable example for the impact a dedicated coach can make in the lives of those they mentor.

In today’s episode we interview Renee Jones, Nebraska Teacher of the year for 2022-2023. Her dedication to youth services has always been personal; her passion to build relationships and establish high expectations has always been rooted in the desire to support young people, just as people served her.

Throughout her professional journey, she has served youth in many capacities. As a visitation specialist, she provided support and safety for children and families as their parents worked to regain custody and consistency for their children. Working at Youth Residential Treatment Facilities both in Lincoln, NE, and San Francisco, CA, she has provided support and counseling for young people as they struggled through mental health and personal trauma.

While working at Lincoln High School, she worked diligently at providing engaging lessons and intentionally establishing relationships with staff and students. Each day she strives to accomplish those tasks while holding students accountable, just as school staff did for her brother and her.

She has a strong passion for building individuals' capacities and challenging people past what they believe is possible. Her love for education is rooted in her own childhood but has only strengthened as she became a mother. She is the proud parent of Maverick, Ace, Baerett, and Aurora Jones. Her children's unique personalities and learning styles are a daily reminder of the need to celebrate everyone as an individual and teach each person to meet their independent needs.

She will spend the rest of her professional career changing the lives of young people, just as other school personnel changed the life of her brother and her. She dedicates her career to being the educator and leader that changed the trajectory of her life and challenged her to simply believe in herself.

Tasha Brown is in her fifth season in 2022-23 as an assistant coach for the UCLA women's basketball team. Brown reported to her post on May 29, 2018 and replaced Jenny Huth, who was named head coach at Northern Colorado on May 1. Brown’s presence on the staff has helped the Bruins compile 83 wins over the last four, including a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
Brown spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach at Rice University after spending the previous five seasons in the same capacity at the University of Cincinnati.
With more than two decades of coaching experience, Brown has made nine postseason appearances and helped develop 16 all-conference award winners and 12 professional players. Prior to Cincinnati, Brown spent four seasons as the head coach at Western Michigan University, where she produced an All-Mid-American Conference selection and a MAC All-Academic honoree each year.
"Tasha is an elite coach," said Close. "She is a superb teacher who knows how to genuinely invest in our players as people and is an excellent recruiter. She will help us in our continual quest to be an uncommon transformational staff."

In today's episode, we have the privilege of interviewing Rachel Baribeau, first known female sports reporter to participate in a professional football training camp, her pursuit of delivering an authentic account to her fans is relentless. Ms. Baribeau is a graduate of the Auburn University Broadcast Journalism program and as a master of her craft, she’s delivered insightful commentary to millions of sports enthusiast via national broadcasters such as Fox Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports, Yahoo, and SiriusXM.

Rachel’s ability to “transcend layers and pull out the real story” is actively sought after in covering the SEC, NFL, and NASCAR, among other notable championship games and Fortune 500 appearances. In fall of 2015, she was bestowed a Heisman vote by the Heisman Trust. These days can be heard on SiriusXM ESPNU, SEC and ACC channels. She was the first female host on SiriusXM ESPNU. She can also be heard on the SEC and ACC channels in the SiriusXM family of Networks.

Outside of work, Ms. Baribeau may put down the microphone but chooses to pick up a megaphone and rally others for the causes in her community. In April of 2014, she organized a climb up Kilimanjaro for former NFL, and Alabama, fullback Kevin Turner, who suffered from ALS. The climb was later turned into a movie narrated by Mike Ditka. In 2016 she founded she blazed yet another trail with the movement, #ChangingtheNarrative. The movement has caught fire with millions of social-media hits, spawning a collaboration with the NCAA to present the #ChangingtheNarrative award and a non-profit to affect more change.

In this episode of Bridging Impact, we sit down with Heather Henson a twenty-eight year coaching veteran, Heather's mission has been to advocate and help student-athletes develop the skills they need to be successful on the field, in the classroom, and throughout their career.

Her coaching career began as an assistant for the men's and women's soccer teams at High Point University, before being named head coach for the women's team. This was followed by twenty-three years as a NCAA Division I head coach for East Tennessee State University and Belmont University. She has also been heavily involved with the Olympic Development Program for 29 years, first as a player and then as a State Team Coach and Regional Staff Coach.

Heather is a leader in the college recruiting process, leadership training and team culture development. She has served as a NCAA Senior Women's Administrator, and is licensed by the United State Soccer Federation (USSF) and United Soccer Coaches (USC).

Her recruitment classes have included fourteen Scholar Athlete Awards and one NCAA Top 30 Women-of-the-Year and 25 years posting Team GPA of 3.0-3.8, representing her dedication to the academic success of every student-athlete.

She started Game Changers in 2018 as a way to connect with the athletes she coached outside of her time with them on the field. Covid allowed the opportunity to do more "coaching" virtually on things that mattered to her athletes like mindset, leadership, goal setting, just to name a few.

In 2021 after an unexpected divorce, Coach K walked away from teaching, and the home she knew for the last 20 years, to go full time as a mental performance coach with Game Changers to help hundreds of individual athletes, teams and coaches at the high school and collegiate levels.

From what could have been a very sad story, Kristyna chose to build her own path back to happiness through controlling the controllables and embracing tough thoughts and feelings.

Now through her own learning she is able to teach others how to find their own "game changers" to help them in sport and in life.

  • Sports. I love watching, participating or talking about any sport. I am a sports junkie and can never get enough.

Dave became an Oregon Duck in the fall of 2001. He is a senior instructor ii/assistant director in the Department of Physical Education and Recreation. He oversees the running, weight training, martial arts, individual activities and team sports areas and also teaches a variety of classes in the team sports, running, weight training and leadership areas.

Prior to becoming a Duck, he taught, operated the fitness center, and coached at Herkimer County Community College for two years and then coached and taught at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee for 11 years. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Cortland State University in New York and then received his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

Dave loves seeing students succeed and the look of accomplishment is a great reward for him. He enjoys being around college students because he gets to teach them more advanced technical and tactical skills. His favorite class to teach is coaching because students can use the skills taught in class in real life situations. He believes in developing students physically, psychologically, socially, and emotionally.

Dave loves to spend time with his friends and family. He spends a lot of time helping coach his son’s sports teams and participating in outdoor activities with his family.

The path to where Tyler currently stands started a bit sooner than most -- this journey began when he was a high school athlete. Going into his senior year, in an attempt to help both his teammates and himself develop skills more efficiently, he began to research and teach himself different ways to accomplish their goals of development.

Taking this information and skills he had learned, he played college basketball and took the same approach to work while preparing for the season alongside new teammates.

After my first season of college basketball, it became clear playing was no longer the part of the game he had a passion for. Helping players develop and grow through my unique methods became my primary focus and captivated my day-to-day life.

Helping young men and women grow as athletes on the court, but off the court as well has become a more fulfilling challenge than playing had ever been for him

Darren is entering his 6th year as the Head Assistant Coach for College of the Redwoods. Coach Turpin is also in his 2nd year as the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Redwoods.

Originally, from Compton, Ca, Darren was a 2008 graduate of Dominguez High School, where he was a three-year varsity player and a two-year starter as a forward. Darren helped the Dons attain the 2004 CIF-SS Div.1 Championship, 2008 CIF- SS Div. 1 Championship, 2008 CIF-Southern Regional Championship, and 2008 CIF Div. 1 State Runner-up. Darren individually received Second Team All-Conference in 2007. He also played High School AAU Basketball for Branch West Academy and the I-Can All-Stars.

Darren then attended Navarro College in Corsicana, TX, from 2009-2011, where he was a part of the 2010 NJCAA Final Four team. He received the Junkyard Dawg Award in 2011. Graduating from Navarro College with his AA Degree in General Studies, he continued his collegiate basketball career at Humboldt State University from 2011-2013. As a Lumberjack he was part of history, winning the University's first CCAA Tournament Championship in 2012 and appearing in the 2012 NCAA Div. 2 National Tournament. Darren received the 2013 Axe Man of the Year Award.

Before joining the College of the Redwoods, Coach Turpin worked as a Head Coach for Boys Basketball at Arcata High School from 2013-2017. He was the Frosh Boys Head Coach for 2 years and Junior Varsity Boys Head Coach for 2 years. Along with coaching high school, Darren coached AAU for the Humboldt Wild and the Eureka Beast.

Darren received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 2017 from Humboldt State University and a Masters in Coaching and Athletics Administration in 2020 from Concordia University of Irvine.

In this episode, we interview Ryan Bisio Two-Time Golden Valley Conference Coach of the Year (2020, 2022)

The 2021-2022 season brought continued success to College of the Redwoods. In his second season, Ryan Bisio and the Corsairs went on another magical run – resulting in another Golden Valley Conference Championship and advancing to the second round of the State Playoffs. Bisio has now solidified himself in all-time school history by winning the most Golden Valley Conference Championships and holding the highest winning percentage of all time (.781).

Bisio didn’t waste much time in his inaugural season as head coach of the Redwoods men’s basketball program in the 2019-2020 season. Beyond winning the school’s third outright Golden Valley Conference in school history, Bisio led the 22-6 Corsairs to the deepest playoff run in school history – the Northern California Elite Eight. The sudden and forceful impact to the landscape was widely felt, garnering Bisio votes for California Community College Coach of the Year.

Bisio comes to College of the Redwoods after becoming the winningest head coach in Arcata High School boys’ basketball history – compiling a record of 82-31 in his four seasons. During his tenure, the Tigers made four-straight North Coast Section playoff appearances, including a run to the state playoffs in the 2015-2016 season. In that time, Arcata captured three-straight HDN Conference titles, three-straight conference tournament titles, and produced three-straight league MVP’s.

Bisio has an international flair to his resume, having coached four seasons of men’s, women’s, and elite youth basketball at Hvidovre Basketball Club in Copenhagen, Denmark. In Hvidovre, Bisio led the u-16 boys’ team to three-straight National Final Four appearances – the first in the club’s history. He also developed players who went on to represent Team Denmark in International competition.

Bisio’s high school coaching experiences also include stints at Carmel High School and The Branson School, in Ross, California – where the Bulls won the North Coast Section and CIF NorCal Division 5 championships. Bisio also possesses junior college experience coaching with legendary head coach and mentor, Craig McMillan, at Santa Rosa Junior College.

As a player, Bisio graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in 2000 and still holds the all-time single season scoring record. Having played at Santa Rosa Junior College and competing in the 2003 Elite 8, Bisio then accepted a scholarship to California State Monterey Bay, playing for Hall of Fame coach Bill Trumbo and leading the California Collegiate Athletic Association in assist-to-turnover ratio his senior season.

It's simple, but the word that comes first in the statement.

Love tough flips the tough love statement on its head. It's a reminder that we have to love and care about our players FIRST before we give them the tough accountability they need.

Once they know we love and care about them, we can start coaching them hard.

One behavior I've been noticing recently is the coach's lack of SHOWING they care. I'll watch coaches tell their athletes they care about them but never ask or engage them in any way unless it concerns the sport they are coaching them in.

We MUST SHOW the players we love and care for them daily.

Greg Berge has been a teacher, coach, and school administrator for the last 27 years. He has always had a great interest and passion for leadership, team development, competition, and success. He currently serves as the High School Principal and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach in Lake City, MN. He is also a Licensed Sports Leadership Facilitator through the Janssen Sports Leadership Center.

His 17 years in school administration has given him a very unique and broad perspective on leadership, team development, and how teams and individuals are successful. His 16 years as a Varsity Basketball Coach and many other years as an assistant coach in multiple sports has given him great insight into what makes great teams.

Over these years, his basketball teams have been fortunate to win ten conference championships (eight consecutive) and two section championships. As an assistant varsity coach, he has also helped coach teams who won multiple section championships in both football and girl's golf. He has also been fortunate to coach multiple players who played college basketball encompassing all levels (NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA Division II, and Division III).

How to Utilize the Power of Reflection

At the end of every day, I journal for at least 5 minutes, if not sometimes 10 reflecting on the day. What did I do well today? How could I have improved as a coach? What did I learn today? What challenged me today?

Constantly reflecting on my experience as a coach has helped me become a better coach for the next day. As coaches & adults, we always expect kids to constantly be learning from their mistakes and growing.

But what about us? Shouldn't we continue the same practice of striving to grow every day? Using the tool of reflection gives us an opportunity to first create self-awareness where we need to improve. If we don't reflect on our experiences, we don't know what we did well and should double down on.

We most certainly won't know our blind spots & how can make an improvement.

Dan was a 1,000-point scorer at the high school and collegiate levels. At only 5’9, Dan had to develop a high skillset through consistent training to get the attention of college coaches. That skillset allowed Dan to be a 4-year starter during his college career. Dan was a two-time NCCAA All-Region player, and lead his team in 3FG (at .486%) makes that finished #1 in NCAA 3FG% during the 2012-2013 season.

Dan has served as an Athletic Director of NYSPHSAA Basketball State Champions Mekeel Christian Academy in 2017-2018, and has served as an assistant coach for Conference Champions Madonna University in 2019-2020.

Dan graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Clarks Summit University, and a Master’s Degree in Business Leadership from Madonna University.

Currently Dan is the City Director for the San Diego location for Pro Skills Basketball.

Most of us know what to do, and if we don't, we all have access to the internet to figure it out. If you want to become a better shooter in basketball, we all know we have to shoot 100s of shots a day to be a better shooter.

But it's actually more impactful if we shoot 100 game-speed shots daily instead of shooting 500 going at 50% speed.

How we train often matters more than what we train.

I worked at a Shooting Clinic for PGC Basketball a few weekends ago.

The clinic director asked all of us, "what percentage of being a great basketball is mental?" A majority of us raised our hands for AT LEAST 50%.

If that's the case, we have to ask ourselves; do we really spend 50% of our time training the mental side of our game? As coaches, do we dedicate 50% of our practice time to developing our team's mindset?

For most of us, it's an overwhelming no; we do not.

Tami believes that while it’s important to work on the physical and technical aspects of sport, the mental side is just as important; mental skills are often the differentiating factor for the most successful athletes. Tami understands that talent cannot always overcome a lack of confidence or mental toughness, but a high level of confidence and mental toughness can often overcome a lack of talent. Many young athletes struggle with the process even more than us.

Again, I come back to social media because of the instant information we all now have access to.

Young athletes constantly look at professional players' highlights and want to jump straight to the pros.

I'll admit, that is totally me as well. I want to jump to 1,000 podcast listeners and 1,000 Youtube subscribers, & turn Bridging Impact Basketball into my full-time income.

All of those goals of mine will come true, but not today.

Three Ways We Can Be More Vulnerable  

ASK! - Ask the silly get-to-know-you questions. Favorite food? Place to vacation? Then continually ask the deeper ones, "what are your strengths? Weaknesses? How can I improve?  

Share - Sharing your story is so powerful in connecting with kids. I always share the story of getting cut from varsity in my junior year because that's relatable for kids. They don't want to hear how good you were; they also want to hear the challenges they are going through right now.  

Make Mistakes - Be willing to own your mistakes and ask for feedback. If you want your athletes to grow constantly, you must role model what it looks like first!

Coach Turgeon played in the New York Yankees farm system from 1987-1990 under Stump Merrill and Buck Showalter after being drafted out of Davidson College and spent the next decade playing professionally.

From 2000-2002 Turgeon began managing in the Cleveland Indians organization before entering the college ranks where he coached with Boston College, the University of Connecticut, Duke University, and Virginia Tech.

He spent the next 11 years managing and being the Coordinator of Instruction for the Pittsburgh Pirates Organization.

Coach Turgeon is passionate about impacting the person first and then the player.

We dive into talking about connectivity and how we can build more connections with our teams, how we can help our players develop more awareness and how as us coaches can transform them into leaders.

Don Showalter is the USA Basketball Youth & Sport Development coach director. Showalter is a 10-time USA Basketball gold medalist head coach who served as head coach of USA men's U16 and U17 national teams from 2009-2018.

Showalter has been recognized by numerous organizations for his dedication to the game. In 2004 he earned the NABC Advocacy Award. In 2009 Showalter was honored by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association as its National, Regional and State Coach of the Year after having been named the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year nine times (1981, 1982, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2006-2008, 2010).

In addition to his high school coaching duties, Showalter was selected to coach in the 1999 McDonald’s High School All-America Game and the 2005 and 2012 Jordan Brand Classic All-Star Games. He has been a coach at the Nike Skills Academy and LeBron Academy and has also spoken at basketball clinics around the world, including in Australia, Belgium, Dubai, Egypt, England, Italy, Russia, Scotland, Spain (Canary Islands) and Switzerland.
