Episode 20: Jeff Goodhue
Date: 27 December 2022
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor, sponsored by Salient Process
Guest: Jeff Goodhue, Americas Technical Sales Leader for Business Automation at IBM
Our host, Jimmy Hewitt, sat down with Jeff Goodhue, Americas Technical Sales Leader for Business Automation at IBM to discuss the evolution of Business Automation. You will hear about the significant development within systems, people, and processes overtime. The two also discuss uniting the business side of an organization with the technology side, and all that entails. From planning and setting a baseline, to finding the right balance of analysis, you will hear ample advice on how to unite the business and IT as one entity!
“People are learning how to be smarter than themselves.”
“Let’s also automate the things that are pretty repetitive. But then let’s also bring in some of those recommendations and natural language so that when they move to a newer task/an interesting task, there also supported by that too.”
“It could be the most beautifully architected system design your humming along, with containers and event driven architecture, but it you aren’t improving a metric, a KPI, then the business is never going to sign off on it. And likewise, if the architecture diagram, design, integration flows, information security hasn’t been properly designed then it’s never going to get off the ground with IT. So, that makes a ton of sense in terms of uniting the business with IT early and often. Focus on discovery and metrics.”
“The business is much more likely to involve themselves, feel ownership, move forward with the solution, and continue to improve overtime if they see that time to value. So, involve them early and often.”
“Mining is not only helpful on the upfront process discovery establishing your baseline, but it also helps with the continuous monitoring of that baseline after you’ve implemented your automation.”

Episode 19: Automation meets Risk Management with Ram Naidu
Date: 13 December 2022
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor, sponsored by Salient Process
Guest: Ram Naidu, Head of Control Evaluation for Consumer Lending for Wells Fargo
Our host of Bots & Thoughts, Jimmy Hewitt, sat down with Ram Naidu at the OPEX (World Annual Operational Excellence & Business Transformation Summit) conference in Orlando, Florida. Ram is a business leader who has spent his career in consumer lending, specifically responsible for managing risks and controls. Consumer lending is a highly regulated space; therefore, the stakes could not be higher regarding managing risks and controls. In addition, the sheer volume alone at Wells Fargo requires the sophisticated application of automation to manage risk and controls at scale. Listen in as Ram, Head of Control Evaluation for Consumer Lending at Wells Fargo, tells his story, talks you through his methods, and lends you his perspective on applying automation for risks and controlled management for one of the largest banks in the world!
“Companies that have really good risk management practices also tend to have very good operational excellence practices, and they tend to be more proactive.”
“Process map everything out. You want to identify your stakeholders, your customers, your handoffs, your dependencies, and then basically identify where your risks are. And then ultimately decide whether you have controls in position or if there are gaps where you need to design controls so that you can actually then monitor those controls.”
“Across the industry…we still have a lot of opportunity to automate data.”
“Most of the time it’s really not about the risk and controls, it’s about the process. It’s about the customer. It’s about the businesses.”
“We want to be partners with the business leaders and their teams so that we are, again, using that reactive-proactive analysis. We don’t want to be reacting to what is on paper, but we want to be proactive and actually raise our hands and lead from the front and help our partners.”

Guest: “It's not to quit doing that work, but to do that work more efficiently and repurpose that headcount into doing things that are more valuable.”
Guest: "From the standpoint of what automation has done for me, it's certainly saved me tons of money, there's no question about that. But what it has also done, is it has improved my quality of life. So, I would encourage senior leaders to understand that you're not just automating minutes and repurposing employees...You're also maximizing the value of your time."

“We are trying to take them from wherever they are today to the next level. If it’s a first-generation system that they’re looking at, then it’s getting their arms around what their processes are today and then paint the picture and the vision of what could happen with digital transformation using a variety of the technology that we’ve been talking about.”
“A lot of companies are not getting the most out of the capabilities that are possible… companies are using a document capture solution, but they're using no artificial intelligence or machine learning. Meaning that they have documents come into the company and those documents still have to be separated and indexed manually where they could be taking advantage of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and all the technologies that are available to actually classify or recognize what kind of document that is and then extract that information off.”
“Irrespective of how big you are and what your business is, if you have the right leadership at the company and you have the right focus on what the business problem is, you can transform your business.”
“Automation—hyperautomation—really does not discriminate by size of company. If there's waste in your organization, there's gain, and that's one trend I've noticed in this space, over the last coming up on a decade in this space, is how approachable these solutions are from a price point.”

Automation was about just automating things but really, what we're seeing is the secondary benefit is, how does it give you a better work-life experience between freeing up and allowing you to work on more things, giving you time to up your skills by doing training because you're not spending 8-14 hours/day fire fighting and trying to get the things done in front of you, but really, having that more rewarding work and flexibility and allowing you to have advancements in an organization…." - Matthew Warta on BAW, employee retention, and the great resignation.

Episode 7: What is Process Discovery?”
Date: 28 June
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor sponsored by Salient Process
In this debut episode of the first Mini-Series: Process Mapping & Mining, our host, Jimmy Hewitt, will discuss two capabilities within the world of process discovery: process mapping and process mining. Leveraging one or both of these hyperautomation capabilities will establish the foundation of your hyperautomation journey. You will learn about the what, why, and how of both capabilities. Finally, Hewitt will share some real-life examples so that you leave this episode informed and ready to kick off your own process discovery journey!
“Whether we're talking about one of your business processes or all of them, we cannot improve a process or even know where to start until that process or set of processes have been discovered captured.”
“Mapping complements mining, so using the two together allow each other’s strengths to shine and solves for each other's inherent limitations. A match made in hyper automation heaven.”
“Process discovery is the practice of capturing the current state of your company's business processes. This is table stakes for process improvement and hyperautomation journeys.”

Highlighted quotes from episode 6:
Guest": "This was a great moment because, in the last 2+ years, we automated over 200,000 manual hours."
Guest: “Hyperautomation could be in anything that could be done better.”
Guest: “There is a huge opportunity to improve both the employee experience and customer experience. That would be a win for any company or organization.”
Host: “Success will breed success. In due time, you’ll have your hyperautomation COE (Center of Excellence).”
Host: “The ‘as is,’ the current state, process is rarely good and clean.”
Guest: “We reduced the cycle time—just by cleaning up the process—by 75%.”
Host: “You just solved a three-week problem down to three minutes…That’s customer experience. That’s employee experience. There’s ROI there. There are manual hours saved there. And the overhead was next to nothing. It just took mapping out a process.”
Host: “That speaks to the idea of you don't have to map out your entire enterprise end-to-end to get started. Some leader somewhere knows where the pain is.”

Episode 5: Hyperautomation Standards, Notations, & Frameworks
Date: 31 May 2022
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor sponsored by Salient Process
In this episode of Bots & Thoughts: The Hyperautomation Podcast, you will learn about some of the most critical standards, notations, and frameworks within the world of hyperautomation. Additionally, you will hear about several prominent industry organizations and guilds that prove most useful in nurturing our hyperautomation journeys. Our host, Jimmy Hewitt, will walk through the Who, What, and Why of each standard, notation, and framework revealed in this episode. As a reminder, the technical components discussed will apply to all viewers ranging from experienced to newer in the hyperautomation and business architecture space.
“Business Process Model and Notation AKA BPMN is a graphical representation, a modeling notation, a collection of symbols that can rapidly convey meaning, specifically about business processes, and is the de-facto standard for business process diagrams.”
“Modeling your business in APQC (American Productivity and Quality Center) standard process framework is important in the hyperautomation community because it accommodates a holistic approach, not a siloed one. It is a very common framework and an enabler of business architecture.”

Episode 4: What do I automate next?
Date: 17 May 2022
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor sponsored by Salient Process
Our host, Jimmy Hewitt, will guide you through the decision process of "what to automate next" in this episode of Bots & Thoughts: The Hyperautomation Podcast. Hewitt will first establish two guiding principles for our listeners to follow throughout the decision-making process for automation. Then, you will hear about two considerations to keep in mind as well when deciding on your next automation venture. The guiding principles and considerations in this episode will touch on a range of automation maturities, from your first automation to your second automation and beyond, making them applicable to all listeners regardless of automation experience.
“A quick win leads to inbound requests for more of what you’ve done, which leads to the establishment of evaluation/prioritization criteria and better governance.”
“Our last RPA quick win had a very low financial barrier to entry. It paid for itself entirely in less than 3 months and is generating an 8x return year over year for this client. Not a bad quick win!”
“Equipped with these two guiding principles and two considerations, your hyperautomation COE (Center of Excellence) will be standing on the shoulders of all early adopters who have paved the way for your success.”

Episode 3: Automate Financial Reporting with IBM RPA: Salient Process x Primanti Bros
Date: 1 May 2022
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor sponsored by Salient Process
Guest: Caitlin Stritmatter, Director of Financial Planning & Analysis at Primanti Brothers Restaurant & Bar
In this exclusive episode of Bots & Thoughts: The Hyperautomation Podcast, you will listen to our host, Jimmy Hewitt, sit down with a Primanti Brothers executive, Caitlin Stritmatter, to discuss the company’s journey into the world of hyperautomation. Primanti Brothers is a chain of sandwich shops in the eastern United States that previously relied on manual, time-consuming, and highly repetitive tasks. You will listen to a firsthand account of the company’s digital transformation and hyperautomation experience. During this episode, you will hear how hyperautomation fits into the context of customer experience, employee experience, future-proofing, and facilitating your company’s own growth plans, all while saving costs. You don’t want to miss out on the very first special guest episode of Bots & Thoughts!
Host: “I think everyone out here can relate to the circumstances leading up to Primanti Brothers’ first step into hyperautomation, regardless of what industry you work in.”
Guest: “There is absolutely no plan to slow down. Scalability, ever since I started here, has been my number one goal, and I really think that automation is going to help get us there.”
Host: “If you had to boil down your hyperautomation experience, or maybe this first bot, to one or two words, what would they be?”
Guest: “Relief.”
Host: “I really do think of hyperautomation as a pressure release valve to any organization who’s bringing it in. There’s pressure to do tasks, to do a variety of tasks that vary in value to the organization. Where is my pressure coming from? It’s my time commitments on the lower value things when I know I have higher-value things that also need to be done.”
Guest: “Automate everything. The less busy work you can do, the better off everyone is, the happier you’ll be, the more effective you’ll be at your job. You know, it doesn’t feel like time is being wasted when you don’t have to waste time doing something a bot can do.”

Episode 2: The History of Hyperautomation
Date: 1 May 2022
Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor sponsored by Salient Process
During this episode of Bots & Thoughts: The Hyperautomation Podcast, you will learn about the history of the seven distinct hyperautomation capabilities. Specifically, you will hear how process mapping, Process Mining, Task Automation, Capture, Workflow, Content, and Decision Automation capabilities originated. From parenting 12 children to defining Process Mapping, saving man-hours on Wall Street to the start of Robotic Process Automation, scanning a simple picture of your child to the creation of Optical Character Recognition, and much more, each automation capability has its own story of how it came to be. Not only will you get a glimpse into the history of the hyperautomation capabilities, but you will also listen to a bonus section that travels back to the very beginning of hyperautomation, nearly 2 million years ago. Please join our host, Jimmy Hewitt, to dive into the exciting history of hyperautomation!
“The origin story of process mapping goes back to the same year that Babe Ruth eclipsed the career home run record. That’s right. In 1921, a mechanical engineer, the father of process mapping, one of my heroes, and the father from [the original] Cheaper by the Dozen (yes, the movie), Frank Gilbreth and his wife, who’s also a mechanical engineer, made a seminal presentation to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers called Process Charts: First Steps in Finding the One Best Way.”
“Process mining can be described as the missing link between process mapping and data science.”
“I was amazed at how many concepts still hold true today.”
“How interesting is it that history not only repeats itself, but the intent of this technology still stays the same after over 30 years?”
“Learning about and talking you all through the history and humble beginnings of hyperautomation has also really made me appreciate how far we have come and how much easier it is, relatively speaking, to get from idea to actual business value.”
