I mean, with an "eat pizza, take data" motto, what more could you ask for?!

At the heart of any behaviorist is an authentic desire to impact this world in a positive way. As a community, we are aligned in this value and seek to demonstrate it through all that we do. As a core characteristic of being an independent behaviorist, it’s important to also align your practices with your own core values and guiding principles. To do so, one must first look within in order to develop a plan for living that represents, applies, and disseminates your personal values. When you are able to live in alignment with who you want to be then you’ll be better able to consistently create a positive change in the world. Therefore, the initial step in becoming an independent behaviorist is to learn more about yourself through self-assessment.

We propose an independent behaviorist is someone who believes the world operates on behavior analytic principles and takes ownership for how they practice behavior analysis in all areas of life. This means, regardless of the various roles we have, such as an employee, employer, parent, partner, spouse, coach, friend, karate instructor, or yoga enthusiast...you take ownership for how you practice behavior analysis in the world.
In this episode, we discuss 7 characteristics we believe define what it means to be an independent behaviorist. These are someone who:
-Seeks autonomy over how they practice behavior analysis
-Seeks to align practices with own core values and guiding principles
-Advocates for our science, field of behavior analysis, clients, and self
-Solves socially significant problems
-Collaborates with others
-Operates within scope of competence at all times
-Seeks to maximize their strengths, skills, talents, and experiences for betterment of all
We feel wholeheartedly that being an independent behaviorist will preserve our science, protect our communities, and facilitate the dissemination of behavior analysis world-wide. Join our discussion to learn more about how you can be an independent behaviorist!
