It’s been four years since I began podcasting. I started with Mastering Midlife, which later became Mastering Overwhelmas my coaching practice evolved. You have all stayed with me for over 400 episodes, and after countless solo conversations and interviews with my brilliant guests, it is time to close the Mastering Overwhelm podcast. I have been going around the world, having a blast, and learning about living life. But all great things come to an end—so that other great things can begin.
In this episode, I share what I hope you learned—what I hope I was able to impart—from the Mastering Midlife and Mastering Overwhelm podcasts. I also introduce The Rising Leader and describe how my Only 10s principle and career in coaching and sales are culminating in the next major project of my life.

Bryan Post is an entrepreneur, speaker, author, and founder of Post Institute, an organization dedicated to helping parents heal wounds created by trauma. Post Institute has published over 100 books, DVDs, CDs, audio recordings, webinars, and articles on parenting children who have experienced pre-birth and early life trauma. He also currently serves as the Clinical Director for Parents in Training, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides wraparound services to adoptive families throughout Northern California.
Bryan joins me today to discuss trauma and stress and how we can manage our responses to them. He defines trauma and describes its dynamics in adopted children’s lives. He explains why the loss of someone close to us can cause a physiological disruption and why taking the time to grieve is important. He dissects how trauma causes us to become fearful and stress-sensitive. He also shares what we can learn as adults from soothing a child who’s having a tantrum at the supermarket and underscores how we can learn to work through fear-based anxiety and stress responses by practicing mindful breathing.

Ken joins me today to discuss “following your yes” and how doing so can impact your life. He distinguishes the “internal yes” from the “intellectual yes.” He discusses why a “no” uttered from the deepest convictions is better than a people-pleasing or conflict-avoidant “yes.” He explains how following “maybes” over an internal “yes” makes us overwhelmed and overburdened. Ken also reveals the key to transforming your life and underscores how staying true to your “yes” can become a gift to the people in your life.

Is there something in your life you’re trying to force? Are you, for example, trying to write a book instead of writing the book every day? Or are you trying to lose weight and reach a weight goal instead of actively watching what you’re doing every single day? I was in a similar spot. Getting my weight down to 160 lbs has been my goal—a goal that had vexed me for a while. I am a coach, after all, so why couldn’t I achieve the goals I said I wanted to reach?
Today, I am at 164.5 lbs. I still haven’t reached my goal, but it’s no longer a point of contention. In fact, the process has become an awesome experience.
In this episode, I discuss failure and committing to the process of achieving your goals. I share some of the goals I made for myself earlier this year. I describe how I’m learning to keep my word to myself and how I’m approaching my weight goals. I also discuss the value of being kind to yourself and highlight the importance of focusing on your process over your goals.
“Process over goals. We don’t have control over the goal, but we have control over the process and who we are in it.” - Mark J. Silverman

What do you do when you’re stuck and don’t know what steps to take forward? My take is to have some quiet time, sit down, and let the answer come to you.
Our ice maker recently broke down: every time it produced ice, it would make this groaning, grinding, whining noise that we couldn’t escape from. It drove me crazy. But since I didn’t want to buy a new refrigerator-freezer—which costs around $3,000—I did my best to figure out what was wrong. Then, one day, all the answers just dawned on me–and I instantly knew how to fix the fridge.
In this episode, I share the story of how I was able to fix my broken fridge and discuss how you can tap into the power of your intuition. I describe an amazing ritual for finding lost things. I also explain how the Only 10s principle can help you access your intuition and highlight the power of sitting, being quiet, and letting knowledge come to you.
“If you’re stuck with something and don’t know what direction to take, what choice to make, what’s next, sit on the couch and wait. Be quiet and wait. Wait for that intuition, that little voice, that direction.” - Mark J. Silverman

Definition – The cumulative adverse effect on the body when allostasis occurs too frequently (as the body is subjected to repeated stressors). In other words, when we are in fight or flight and there is no actual saber-toothed tiger to be found.
We know it as the common, every day modern life made more acute by a pandemic.
So, if you are feeling tired, beat up, unfocused and generally like crap, there is a reason. The good news, you can do something about it.

It’s too late for a lot of things for me. I just turned 60 and I have a new Achilles tendon issue; my back has been hurting in so many different areas; I had just healed my shoulder. So, it’s probably best to accept that there are certain things—such as being a professional tennis player or ultra-marathoner—that I’ll never be able to do. You might be in the same situation: you may feel like it’s too late to meet certain goals.
And you’re right.
In this episode, I explain why it is too late to do what you’re passionate about—and why you have to start doing it now. I reveal various setbacks that prevent you from taking your first step toward your goals.I also share opportunities I missed years ago and the things I’m just starting today, even though I could have begun sooner.

What do you think people skills are?
I used to think that having people skills meant being a golden retriever: having a pleasant personality, being liked, and being friendly, lovely, and tolerant. And if someone throws a ball? You go get it. But as I wrote my book, Only 10s, I learned that people skills, while they are relational skills, aren’t about twisting yourself into a pretzel.
In this episode, I discuss how you can improve your people skills without becoming a people-pleaser. I describe peoples’ reactions when I set up boundaries for the first time. I explain why people-pleasing personalities find it difficult to say no to others. I also underscore the relationship between self-worth and the ability to set boundaries and enumerate the top three skills you need to become an effective leader of your organization and your own life.
“These people skills and the difficult conversations are what you need to have so you can pay attention to your own life.” - Mark Silverman

I am not a naturally organized, put-together person, nor am I a naturally happy person; in fact, I’ve been called Eeyore before. And yet, I live a joyous life and create some amazing things in the world. How? I depend on tools: I do Mastering Overwhelm because I get overwhelmed, and I do Only 10s because I have ADHD. I go through my routines and habits and practices every morning.
In this episode, I discuss how you can have a happy, joyful life by doing what I do. I describe the habits and routines that shape my day and life. I also highlight how reading can shape your perspective for a happier life and share some of the books that have impacted me.
“The reason I have the life that I have and the joy that I have is because I do what I do. If you want what I have, you need to do what I do—and you have to do it for you.” - Mark J. Silverman

It has been a few weeks since Naomi Judd passed away. Naomi, alongside her daughter Wynonna, formed The Judds, a successful country music act that rocked the 80s and 90s. To say that I love The Judds is an understatement. Way back from 2008 to 2009—when I was living with depression and suicidal thoughts—I looked for reasons to not take my life. I thought about my children, cobalt blue, chocolate chip cookies, and The Judds. As long as I had them, I could keep going. So, when the news that Naomi had taken her own life came out, it hit hard.
In this episode, I discuss Naomi Judd and mental health. I describe how we tend to suffer in silence when we have mental illness and how we bury trauma instead of confronting it. I describe the time I was suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts. I also highlight the role of addressing mental health in creating the life that you want.
“Address your mental health; I know I couldn’t create my life if I didn’t address the traumas from my childhood.” - Mark Silverman

In my travels as a coach, I work with people on a wide range of issues including success, mindset, inner game, and spirituality. I also encounter people fighting depression, anxiety, and many other kinds of mental health issues. In my years working with people through these issues, I’ve observed that conventional medication and therapies alone don’t always work. Still, I delved deeper because I wanted to help people do everything they could to be better. In my search, I met Nano the Shaman, with whom I recently worked, finding breakthroughs in healing our hearts’ deepest wounds.
Nano joins us today to discuss ayahuasca, psychedelics, and healing our deepest wounds. He describes how he met a shaman for the first time and shares his path into plant medicine and healing work. He defines plant medicines, enumerates the most popular kinds of plant medicines, and explains what it really means to heal. Nano also discusses the historical and anthropological underpinnings of plant medicines and highlights the importance of healing pain and trauma from its root cause.
“Ayahuasca helps pick all these parts of yourself that you haven’t yet explored because of the pain, then helps you release them.” - Nano the Shaman

Have you ever wanted to change the direction of your life and be the kind of person you always wanted to be? I have some great news for you: you can be a new person. Take it from me—a former alcohol, drug, and sex addict who had no life skills to survive. Who would have thought that I could write a bestseller? That I’d have a podcast and a business that impacts others’ lives for the better? Definitely not me. If I can turn my life around by creating myself every day, so can you.
In this episode, I discuss how you can become the person you want to be. I share a note from Satyen Raja, leader of the WarriorSage community, and describe my experience attending an Alcoholics Anonymous gathering for the first time. I also share my manifesto of creating myself, discuss how you can create yourself through words and actions, and highlight the role of habit in becoming the person you want to be.

Daniel Landau is the Founder and Executive Director of Mens Helpline, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting men seeking emotional support after losing a child due to a miscarriage, still birth, and infertility. Following a successful career as the head of various organizations’ fundraising, sales, and business development departments, Daniel and his wife experienced the emotional trauma of losing a child due to a miscarriage. After realizing there were many resources available for women experiencing infant loss, but very few available for men, Daniel shifted the course of his career - and life - and started the Mens Helpline organization. In addition to working full-time at Mens Helpline, Daniel is also a Board member for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation and the host of the Men Talk Podcast. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Non Profit Management and Leadership from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Daniel joins me today to share his story of losing a child due to a miscarriage and the challenges he faced to find emotional support. We discuss how the concept of Mens Helpline began and why traditional support groups aimed to help women through the trauma of losing a child are not always as effective for men. We discuss how Mens Helpline offers a unique way for men to gain support from other men suffering from the grief of losing a child and why its critical for men to share their emotions and be open to communicating their feelings with their spouse. We also discuss the five stages of grief, strategies men can use to cope with grief, and how the grieving process can help you become a stronger, more empathetic spouse.
“Grief does open up opportunities at the end of the day. You never know why it happens, but - at the end of the day - when it does happen, and you accept it, it makes you stronger.” - Daniel Landau

As we grow older, we start talking about the maladies bothering us. We men, however, are also tough guys who tend to “forget” to make those appointments. Instead of taking the time out of our day, we struggle and fight through those maladies. Men, read this carefully: make that doctor’s appointment. When I suddenly couldn’t read the nameplates of my CEO-guests at a workshop I hosted, I had a tiny breakdown and went to the eye doctor for the first time in six years. It turns out I have cataracts.
In this episode, I discuss mid- and later-life health and the importance of seeing your doctors regularly. I describe the series of doctor’s appointments that I recently went through. I also underscore the role of hormones and highlight why we need sustainable energy as middle- or later-aged entrepreneurs.

An ancient rabbi from the time of Socrates taught that we humans are like the Ark of the Covenant. The most sacred relic of the Israelites, the Ark was a wooden chest covered in pure gold with an elaborate lid called the Mercy Seat. Relating humanity to a gold-covered wooden box may be confusing, but if we examine the dynamic between how we present ourselves to the world and what we perceive to be our shortcomings, we may understand our true value underneath the wood.
In this episode, I discuss why humanity is very much like the Ark of the Covenant. I share my experiences during my recent travel to Israel and highlight the importance of spending time with your adult children. I also underscore our oneness with that force called Life and invite you to dig deeper than your flaws and shortcomings.
“Like the Ark of the Covenant, you have that wood—that shortcoming underneath the gold. But, underneath that wood, you are a precious, loved, and worthy child of God.” - Mark J. Silverman

Having been a people pleaser, I used to be all things to all people. I wore my intelligence, confidence, and energy as a badge of honor. But ever since I woke up to the fact that I am free to choose how I spend my time and attention, freedom has been at the forefront of what I do and what I’m trying to impart to the world. Part of that freedom is the power to create and recreate ourselves—and, as an act of reinventing myself, I changed my name.
In this episode, I discuss how I changed my name from ‘Marc’ to Mark J. Silverman. I reveal the reason I rebranded the Mastering Midlife Podcast. I describe our capacity to recreate ourselves every day. I also outline the steps I take every morning to recreate myself and explain why we’re all frauds—and why it’s a good thing.
“You can be a different person this afternoon. You get to be a different person this morning. It’s all about deliberate effort—a deliberate choice. Going against your conditioning isn’t easy, but it’s possible.” - Mark J. Silverman

“Procrastination is merely the pursuit of perfection. Once we let go of that, we can move forward.” - Valari Jackson

Life brings grief in all flavors. Yes, death and loss of loved ones, but also in job loss, fading youth and vitality, heck – even losing your phone. Diana Bonnici helps us understand how grief presents itself (it’s not always how we think), how to process and ultimately move through to find the gifts and deeper experiences. Having just lost my mother and my dog in the last few days, every word she offered has been spot on.

When you encounter the word “overwhelm,” what are the things that immediately come to your mind? Your kids? Work? Or the stream of news about COVID-19? What if I told you that overwhelm isn’t caused by something external to you?
You see, as a recovering people-pleaser, I used to get overwhelmed whenever someone made a request; I didn’t have the fortitude to say no. But once I understood that I could decline, agree, or renegotiate a request, I realized that it wasn’t these people asking for my time that caused my overwhelm.
In this episode, I discuss what’s causing overwhelm in our lives—and how you can manage them. I describe how being a people-pleaser used to cause me so much stress and anxiety, and highlight the relationship between fear and overwhelm. I also underscore the importance of thinking about how we relate with and see the world and share some tools and practices that can help you manage stress and overwhelm.
“You get overwhelmed not because you’re not good at time management, but because you outsize the consequences of all the things you’re supposed to do.” - Mark Silverman
