In our latest state of the nation interview, we talk to Chris Ringland about the state of Freedom of Religion or Belief in the UK.   Chris joined the Evangelical Alliance as Public Policy Officer for Scotland in 2021. Alongside advocacy work in the Scottish Parliament on behalf of the Evangelical Alliance's membership, he supports the work of the advocacy team across the UK, including the Cross Section podcast and the development of the Public Leadership programme. Previously, he worked for MSPs in the Scottish Parliament and played a key role in the Evangelical Alliance's Stories of Hope report during the COVID-19 pandemic, which received national media coverage and was debated in the Scottish Parliament. He regularly contributes to radio and podcasts and is passionate about seeing Scotland's communities flourish and the key role of churches in bringing about cultural change and transformed lives.

Freedom Declared Foundation were set up to champion Freedom of Religion or Belief throughout the United Kingdom. In our latest state of the nation interview, Maureen Sier gives her perspective about the state of Freedom of Religion or Belief in the UK.   

Maureen has worked for Interfaith Scotland for 20 years, both as National Development Officer and more recently as Director.  Prior to her work in Interfaith relations Maureen taught Sociology at the University of Samoa in the South Pacific.    

As Director of Interfaith Scotland she was awarded a UK/US Fulbright Scholarship which allowed her to undertake interfaith engagement across America and has recently engaged in international interfaith work in Europe and Asia Pacific.    

Maureen is a graduate of Aberdeen University where she received both her Masters and PhD. 

She is a Baha'i by religion and is married with 4 children and 7 grandchildren.

Freedom Declared Foundation are delighted to have been joined by Andrew Copson to discuss the state of Freedom of Religion or Belief within the United Kingdom.   

Andrew Copson has been Chief Executive of Humanists UK since 2009 and elected President of Humanists International since 2015.   

He is a former director of the Religious Education Council, the Values Education Council, and the National Council for Faiths and Beliefs in Further Education.

His books include the Sunday Times bestseller The Little Book of Humanism (2020) and The Little Book of Humanist Weddings (2021) with Alice Roberts; Secularism: a very short introduction (Oxford University Press, 2019); and The Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Humanism (2015) with A C Grayling.

Freedom Declared Foundation were founded to champion Freedom of Religion or Belief within the United Kingdom, and we were delighted to be joined by Georgia Gilholy to discuss her perspective about the state of Freedom of Religion or Belief within the UK.   

Since September 2020, Georgia has volunteered as Editor-in-Chief for the Foundation for Uyghur Freedom, an organisation founded in September 2020 for the purpose of raising awareness of the Uyghur genocide amongst the British public.   

Georgia also works full-time as a journalist and her main writing interests are foreign affairs, particularly in relation to the Middle East, China, and human rights issues.

Freedom Declared were founded to champion Freedom of Religion or Belief within the United Kingdom, and we are delighted to be joined by Lois McLatchie to discuss her perspective about the state of Freedom of Religion or Belief within the UK.

Lois serves as a communications officer for Alliance Defending Freedom UK, the human rights group which supported Canon Tom White’s legal challenge to the Scottish government’s worship ban in March last year.

Lois advocates for fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion and belief, in the media across the UK and further afield. Prior to this role, she served as a legal analyst on ADF International’s UN Advocacy Team at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Areas covered in the interview include the closure of places of worship in Scotland, the PCSC bill, and the policing of "silent prayer".

Derek McAuley is Chair of the British Chapter of the International Association for Religious Freedom which was the first international interfaith body, and takes a particular interest in safeguarding minority perspectives within larger faith groups.   

Derek is a former Chief Officer of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches. He previously served as a Trustee of the Inter Faith Network of the UK and holds several other charity trusteeships.

Having recently graduated from SOAS with a BA(Hons) in Religion, Esmé Partridge is an interfaith coordinator for the Good Faith Partnership where she consults on several projects including a religion and diplomacy training programme, a Muslim peace initiative, and the UK Freedom of Religion or Belief Forum. 

She is also a writer on Islam, internet spirituality and the place of religion in modernity, with articles appearing in UnHerd, Theos Think Tank and The Royal Society of Arts.
