The Hockey Journey Podcast, hosted by Coach Lance Pitlick, is designed to educate, motivate and inspire hockey players, parents and coaches.. This is accomplished through the amazing stories you’ll hear from current and former players, who have achieved a lot in hockey, covering both men and women athletes.
I’m starting on a hockey journey, to begin reconnecting with people from my hockey past, who made a positive impact on me at some point in my life, gave me an opportunity when no one else would, and are just great human beings. You want to take a "Hockey Journey" with Me? Stay Tuned.....
From NCAA D-I to pro hockey (NWHL/EWHL) to coaching the next generation
On this episode of The Hockey Journey Podcast, I sit down with Allie LaCombe — a Minnesota native whose hockey path has taken her from NCAA Division I to the professional ranks in the NWHL and European Women’s Hockey League, and now into coaching and leadership roles that are shaping the next generation of players.
Allie starred at Syracuse University, where she led the nation in faceoff percentage her senior year, before playing professionally with the Connecticut Whale, the Vienna Sabres in Austria (winning an EWHL title), and Almaty Aisulu in Kazakhstan. But her story didn’t stop when her playing career wrapped. With more than a decade of coaching experience, she has worked at every level of the game — from guest coaching at NHL development camps with the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes to training NHL, AHL, USPHL, and NCAA athletes in elite skill development.
Currently serving as Assistant Hockey Director and Head Coach with the Nashville Warriors, as well as guiding teams with the Jr. Predators, Allie continues to share her knowledge, passion, and teaching ability with young athletes, helping them chase their hockey dreams.
This conversation covers her journey as a player and coach, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and what she’s doing to grow the game and inspire the next wave of talent. Whether you’re a player, coach, or hockey parent, you’ll come away motivated by Allie’s story and perspective on the sport we all love.
Enjoy the ride, friends — this is the hockey journey of Allie LaCombe!

Today’s Guest: Katie Cummings
Today’s guest is someone who represents what this show is all about—commitment, grit, and the love of the game. Katie Cummings didn’t grow up in a hockey-crazed town or follow the traditional pipeline to success. She built her journey out of passion and persistence in a place where rinks were scarce, girls’ teams were barely formed, and playing opportunities meant lacing up for three different teams in a single season.
From practicing on a mini-rink in Nashville to eventually becoming a national champion with the Jr. Preds U19 girls program, Katie’s story is a powerful reminder that you don’t need perfect circumstances to chase big dreams. You just need drive, creativity, and the willingness to go all in.
This is a story about breaking barriers, holding the line when it would've been easier just to quit, and leaving a legacy for the next wave of girls who want to play this great game.
Let’s dive into the inspiring hockey journey of Katie Cummings!! Connect with Katie 🙂

I recently picked up The Pictorial History of Hockey by Joseph Romain and Dan Diamond at a thrift store for just $3.00—what a find! The moment I flipped through its pages, I knew I had to do a podcast episode on it. This isn’t a traditional book review; instead, I’m diving into the parts that grabbed my attention and the stories that resonated with me. As I started recording, an unexpected outline took shape, guiding me through hockey’s origins and the fascinating backstories behind some of the names etched on the NHL’s most prestigious awards.

My son Rem will be taking point on this episode, sitting down with a good friend of ours, who has a brilliant hockey mind, Benoit Pont.
Let me read a little info about Mr. Pont from his website ProKeyCoach - -
Benoit Pont, founder of Prokeycoach, is a pioneer in sports individualization, incorporating motor preferences and Action Types motor tests into his approach. With a background as a professional ice hockey player and expertise in sports science, he established ProKeyCoach in 2016 to help athletes maximize their potential through personalized methods.
He coaches a diverse range of athletes, from young prospects, to NHL stars. Additionally, he led hockey coach training in Switzerland for a decade and currently serves as an assistant coach for the Swiss National ice hockey team, a role he has held for 14 years.
The guy has been around the game his whole life and is in the business of helping others, which I love! All his information is below if you want to learn more about what he's got going on. Enjoy this episode and have a productive day!!

I really enjoyed the process of making this episode. I read most days and discuss what I learnwith the players I train here at my facility in Minnesota. I'll also ask them at some point if they read outside of their school requirements. Most answer like I would when I was their age; "No Way!"But every once in a while I'll get someone that gives a different answer that is uncommon. Meet Henry Lavery. He's a youth hockey player, reads 20-30 most days and we're going to be discussing a book we both read, Orr My Story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! More info below. If there's one guarantee from my experiences being a hockey player, there's going to be a few times during your career where you had an injury or got dinged up. After a while, and going through the normal therapy & healing protocols, things don't improve as planned, resulting in you not being able to get back on the ice. What do you do then? I'll tell you, you search everywhere for a possible solution, sometimes months will go by without finding a resolution.
That's where someone like Dr. Johnson comes to the rescue. Solving the unsolvable is the best way I can describe what I witnessed with my wife and kids seeing Doc Johnson. I can't remember how we found him, but I know it wasn't me. We're going to get a bunch of questions answered and then some. Thanks for stopping by. Have a productive day and enjoy this fantastic episode, co-hosted with my son Rem Pitlick :)

Conversation with Michael O'Neill Today's Conversation with Michael O'Neill Today’s conversation is with someone I'm grateful is in my life and respect immensely, Michael O'Neill. Mr. O'Neill has worn many hats over the years: a club hockey player during his college days, a dedicated youth hockey coach, and a respected attorney who once helped me through a significant business legal matter. Today, our conversation comes full circle, as our sons face off against each other in college hockey this weekend—a moment that marks just how much our hockey journeys have intertwined.
Mike didn’t accomplish anything of significance as a hockey player, but his contributions in the past as a youth hockey coach are immeasurable. The hockey diamond in the rough connection that puts Mr. O'Neill at the highest level is his contributions to Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS), which helps people that are in need of legal services but can’t afford it. We have a lot to talk about so settle in and enjoy the episode! Thanks for stopping by and have a productive day :)

An Awesome Day with Robb Stauber! Hi everyone, this is going to be an awesome day, as my son Rem is sitting in on this episode, and I am pumped to visit with a former teammate of mine from the University of Minnesota – goaltender Robb Stauber.
I'm not kidding you when I say he was the most talented goalie I got to play in front of. Maybe I think that because he saved my butt probably hundreds of times after a bad read or when I coughed up the puck for a breakaway. Mr. Stauber was always there for me! By my sophomore year, I’d hardly backcheck when I made a bonehead play, because I knew Robb was there.
He’s the 1st goalie to ever win the Hobey Baker Award, made it to the top of the hockey mountain as a player with NHL stops in LA and Buffalo, and has pursued equally impressive coaching and entrepreneurial ventures. This is Part One of an incredible hockey journey. I hope you enjoy it!

Today, we have a special guest joining us on the Hockey Journey podcast: Logan Cuvo. Having started a number of small hockey-related businesses, I love hearing the history of a startup and the founder's voyage, which always begins at some point with venturing out into an unforeseen landscape that might be dominated by some goliaths.
Mr. Cuvo wasn't always a businessman, though. He played the game, so we'll begin there and work our way up to where he is now: owning a company that apparently has the Best Dam Tape on the market! I really enjoyed hearing Mr. Cuvo's story, and I hope you do as well!

Terry Harper's Hockey Journey Terry Harper's Hockey Journey I have to apologize for the abrupt ending of part one of Mr. Harper's hockey journey. It's like when you're the fan of the home team that's down by 3 at the end of the second, battle back to tie the game in dramatic fashion, sending the contest into overtime, only to lose that game in the first 30 seconds of the final frame. 😞 That's how I felt. We were settled in, ready for the next chapter of Terry's story, getting to the really good stuff, and then it's over. Well, today we're going to fix that.
Terry Harper has an incredible story. Born in 1940, his childhood wasn't an easy one, as he was raised during the war and experienced all the hardships that came along with this worldwide challenge. He also, at a young age, came close to losing his life from the complications of a fire he was involved in, resulting in years of skin grafting, not knowing if he'd survive the event or be able to walk or do sports ever again.
But as we'll see throughout his 18-year tenure in the NHL, Terry exemplified the epitome of defensive prowess. A cornerstone of the Montreal Canadiens' dynasty from 1963-1972, he played an integral role in securing an impressive five Stanley Cup victories for the historic franchise. 🏆
So, Ladies and Gentlemen, get your end dialed in, as we begin part two of the captivating tale of Terry Harper, a beacon of inspiration whose resilience, dedication, and unwavering spirit continue to resonate with hockey enthusiasts around the world. 🌟

Well it happens sometimes, when I do an interview with someone, the hour flys by and we don't even come close to finishing the hockey journey of the individual.
I thought I'd have to wait weeks to get back on Mr. Sloan's schedule, but I got that lane to the net and here we are a few days later, ready to tap into part 2 of his hockey journey.
Here's where we left off. He's new to the professional game, was asked to move from a life-time of playing defense, up to playing forward in the minors from time to time with the Houston Aeros. Caught the attention of the Dallas Stars brass his second year, and was offered an NHL contract at the end of that campaign. We know from part one, that he jumped on a rocket ship when he signed with the Stars, playing in their final 12 regular season games, and most of their NHL playoff games, capping off an unbelievable year by winning the Stanley cup. If you're ready to get wowed & inspired a second time with Blake Sloan, well grab the beverage of your choice and settle into part two of his story, Here we go :)

I can't wait to share my next guest, Blake Sloan's hockey journey, because it is truly remarkable. Let me quickly summarize it in a couple sentences. Broken ankle, broken face, high school championship, NCAA National Champion, Stanley Cup Champion, a Europe Professional League Championship, and was on the bench when one of his Michigan teammates introduced the world to the now famous, the original Michigan move and lacrosse style goal.
Though he accomplished and experienced a lot of the good stuff during his incredible hockey journey, unfortunately, the road he traveled wasn't scripted to perfection, not having any challenges or hardships along the way, where everything just came easy for him. That doesn't happen for anyone, and Mr. Sloan was no exception. If you want to hear the story of a kid, who let his character, work ethic, adaptability and never give up mentality until you get what you want, then buckle up because we are in for a wild ride.
If you're ready to get wowed & inspired, grab the beverage of your choice and settle into a story that I know you're going to love, and this is only part one of his journey. Here we go :)

I'm super excited to have my next guest, Dan Woog on the Hockey Journey Podcast. He grew up in the state of hockey and carved out an impressive career, eventually earning a college roster spot at the University of Minnesota, and we're going to find out how he did it. If you think the road he had to travel was easy, well, if almost dying in a rock slide near his South St. Paul home was part of the plan, being told he'd never walk again, and if he did, it would be with a limp, I want to see how he climbed out of that challenging experience and realized his hockey dream!
Dan's hockey journey is part one of the story, being the son of one of the most influential, iconic hockey individuals Minnesota has ever produced, my coach at the University of Minnesota, is part two of the story. I really enjoyed going back to a period of time on my hockey journey, that shaped me and prepared me for what I didn't know then, but would eventually end up being a 12 year professional career, and my experience at that school prepared me to take advantage of that once in a life-time hockey opportunity!
So sit back, grab your preferred beverage, and let's dive into the hockey journey of Dan Woog. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the conversation and I hope you have a wonderfully productive day!!

Today is a treat for me, as I love when I can have our next guest, skating instructor extraordinaire Barry Karn on the show. He's one of our most popular guests here on the hockey journey podcast. After you're done with this episode, you can also check out numbers 12, 78 and 79 for a whole lot more of Barry Karn goodness.
Recently, one of my other companies, Online Hockey Training started posting again , the Instagram, youtube and the facebook to mention a few after a good 2 year break. One category I like to highlight is the opposite hand training I have players work on and the benefits, but wanted a different, more catchy title, and then I remembered something Mr. Karn said; "disagreeable training!" I texted him, asking if he'd mind if I used the term, he proceeded to give me one of the longest texts I've ever received on disagreeable training and how it's such a critical ingredient in a kids childhood development.
Right then and there, I said it's been too long, I don't know what the topic is going to be, but I need to get a little Barry Karn fix. So ladies and gentlemen, if you're ready to brave this trip with me here today, soon to be traveling through uncharted waters, well sit back, get comfy, settle in, put your tray table in it's upright and locked position, and get ready for a discussion on how one of the top skating instructor's in the world non traditionally teaches. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderfully productive day!

Welcome to Today's Episode!
I'm excited to share with you the story of Jackie Pieper's incredible hockey journey today. It all started when a mom of one of the players I coach (who's a big fan of the podcast, by the way) suggested that Jackie would make an amazing guest. And wow, was she right!
The Journey to the Top
Jackie Pieper has truly climbed the hockey mountain, achieving her dream of playing college hockey. I'm eager to unpack her journey with you, starting from the very beginning. Jackie's passion for hockey was sparked early on by her mom, who shared her own love of the sport with her children. But as we all know, the road to success is rarely smooth. Jackie and her family faced their share of tough times, particularly when her older brother Duke, at just 15 years old, was given only a 5% chance to survive a serious health challenge.
Continuing the Legacy
But Jackie's impact on hockey didn't stop when she hung up her competitive skates. She's been inspiring the next wave of hockey talents, coaching various teams over the years and currently offering private small-group on-ice skills training. Beyond the ice, Jackie continues to make a difference as a speech pathologist, bringing her passion for helping others into another aspect of her life.
If you're ready for a dose of inspiration, grab your favorite drink, and let's dive into a story that's sure to tug at your heartstrings. Here we go :)

I'm excited to bring on my next guest, as we have some history from many years ago. Bruce Garrioch was and still is one of the best writers for the Ottawa Senators. He's been there since day one of the team's modern era, way back in 1990. Our paths crossed during my years with the franchise from 1994 - 1999. When most of us think about a hockey Journey, we think of one through a player's eyes, but not everyone has that opportunity for various reasons. But another group of individuals has had a hockey journey and reached the top of their game, but just in a different sector.
Bruce Garrioch, aka "Scoops" has one of those stories. He's been seen, heard, and read via the Ottawa Sun, MSN (US), MSN Canada, MSN Money Canada, MSN South Africa, National Post, Toronto Sun, The Sports Network (TSN), Calgary Herald, Vancouver Sun, the Ottawa Citizen and the list goes on, this guy is a rock star in the journalism world, and this is going to be awesome. Welcome back to The Hockey Journey Podcast, Episode 120, "Finding Your 2024 Peak Performance Zone." I'm your host, Coach Lance Pitlick, and this episode is proudly presented by Online Hockey Training dot com.
As we step into the new year, it's time for reflection, goal-setting, and navigating the challenges life throws our way. Before we dive into our conversation, a quick reminder to check out onlinehockeytraining.com for exclusive access to my extensive database of off-ice stickhandling, passing, and hockey shooting drills. It's a gift from me to you.
In this episode, we take a unique approach to the typical New Year's resolutions discussion, steering away from their often futile nature. Instead, we explore strategies and techniques from impactful books that have shaped my journey over the years.
We kick off with insights from "Hyperfocus: How to Be More Productive in a World of Distraction" by Chris Bailey. Delving into the importance of attention, deliberate focus, and the science behind productivity, we uncover practical ways to achieve our goals. Quotes from the book, such as "Productivity is not about cramming more into our days but doing the right thing in each moment," challenge conventional notions.
Next up, we explore "The Power of Full Engagement" by James E. Loehr and Tony Schwartz. Shifting the paradigm from time management to energy management, we discuss principles like balancing energy expenditure with intermittent renewal and living life as a series of sprints. Notable quotes touch on the impact of positive rituals, hydration, and the mental equivalent of "eating junk food" through excessive television watching.
We round off the episode by encouraging you to jump into 2024 with a renewed focus on your values, lessons learned, and the person you aspire to be. Whether it's improving your fitness routine, reducing screen time, or honing your hockey skills, the goal is to find your peak performance zone and live with intention.
Thanks for stopping by, enjoy this episode and have a powerfully productive day :)

I've had the opportunity to wear a letter at different times throughout my career, being an assistant or captain of a team, but when I tried to remember if I had any instruction those first couple of times, on how to be a captain or leader of a team, I couldn't find a single recollection of anyone saying, "these are the job requirements to be one of the leaders on this team."
For this episode, I'm going to share some quotes from players (captains) that I looked up to, idolized as a kid, and was privileged enough to play with and against some of those hero's to me during my professional and NHL career. In this episode, I'll be discussing the importance of goal setting. Have you set your hockey season personal goals yet? If not, you may want to have a listen and see if by the end, you feel the same way as you do at this moment.
Now, I'm not an expert on goal setting, but there are many out there who have made it their life's work and have written books regarding their findings and best practices to set and achieve your goals. I've used all the suggestions you'll soon hear, at some point during my life and all I can say is it works!! Again, books have been an inspiration for me over the years and I'd like to share with you some quotes that have guided me in the past and currently, to accomplish more today than I did yesterday. I've put all the links to the books below in case you connect with one of them during your listen, so you can pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. With that being said, thanks for stopping by, enjoy this episode and have a solid

In today's episode, we're not only going to explore the hardships that come with the game of hockey but also the indomitable spirit of those who rise above them. We'll take inspiration from the timeless wisdom in the pages of three remarkable books that helped guide me through tough times. I hope some of the most significant ideas I will share today can help you if you're going through a rough patch early into this winter hockey season.

In episode 111 of the "Hockey Journey" podcast, Coach Lance Plick welcomes Mike Duffy, a figure whose expertise spans a wide array of disciplines, from athletic training to martial arts and beyond. This conversation explores Duffy's multifaceted career and how his experiences translate into training hockey players. Here's a closer look at Duffy's journey and insights:
Mike Duffy's Background: Raised in South Minneapolis, Duffy didn't play ice hockey but was deeply involved in various sports and activities. His journey into martial arts began as a means of self-defense and evolved into a passion that defines much of his professional life today.
Diverse Skills and Interests: Duffy's professional repertoire includes roles as an entrepreneur, tactical trainer, certified gun safety instructor, personal trainer, martial arts instructor, boxing instructor, public speaker, private pilot, model, and actor. His commitment to empowering others covers health, well-being, personal safety, mental health, trauma recovery, and holistic lifestyle.
Encounter with Hockey Through Training: Duffy's introduction to the hockey world came through training Coach Plick's sons, Rett and Rem. This experience was Duffy's first foray into applying his martial arts and physical training expertise on ice, offering a new dimension to hockey training.
Innovative Training Approach on Ice: The training sessions incorporated martial arts principles, focusing on power, speed, strength, and the mental aspect of the game. Duffy adapted scenarios from martial arts to hockey situations, such as puck battles along the boards and defensive positioning, to enhance the players' physical and psychological edge.
Impact of Martial Arts on Hockey Training: The application of martial arts techniques to hockey training highlighted the importance of control, leverage, and mental toughness. Duffy emphasized the transfer of skills from martial arts to hockey, particularly in terms of movement efficiency, body control, and the strategic aspect of engaging in physical play.
Philosophy and Mentality Transfer: Duffy's training philosophy goes beyond physical skills, delving into the mental and emotional resilience required in competitive sports. His approach fosters a holistic development, blending physical prowess with mental sharpness and emotional intelligence.

The Next Guest on the Hockey Journey Podcast is Leading Longevity Authority, Troy Casey, and will have a guest host, my son Rem Pitlick. He'll be interviewing the Certified Health Nut, who has successfully restored physical, mental and emotional balance to clients who have failed with all other systems. His unique holistic approach uses nature-based simplicity anyone can follow. As a Versace model in Milan, Italy, 33 years ago, Troy studied nutrition, herbs and internal purification as a way of looking and feeling great in front of the camera.
He has scoured the Earth for the most powerful health and healing methods, working with indigenous tribes in the Amazon as a medicine hunter, studying the ancient Vipassana Meditation technique, Ashtanga Yoga and more recently at the world famous CHEK Institute, working closely with Paul Chek.
His new book #RippedAt50: A Journey To Self Love, has sold thousands of copies and is transforming lives around the globe. He continues creating educational and inspiring content every week that helps people around the world lead healthier lives. Troy's YouTube channel has more than 133,000 loyal subscribers, and he has been featured on the Discovery Network, MTV, Fox News, and most recently appeared on the Netflix Series, Chad and JT Go Deep.
Today, Troy’s work goes a step beyond biohacking your own body and mind. He has a grand vision for co-creating a world with clean air, water, soil, and equitable systems for all mankind in his lifetime – something he believes is absolutely attainable. To complete the mission, though, we need two things: a complete systems change that values creativity over competition, in every area of life (energy, agriculture, commerce, media, government, etc.), and a collective rising of consciousness to support the new systems.
Why is he on the Hockey Journey Podcast? There is a hockey connection, as Mr. Casey has a son that plays hockey, and is a mentor of my son Rem Pitlick.

Hello again everyone, especially you out there who have kids that no longer live with you! This is a great day for me as I get to spend the next hour or so with my oldest son Rem Pitlick, as he's the next guest on the Hockey Journey Podcast. We recently experimented with bringing the whole Pitlick crew on the show (Lance Pitlick, Lisa Wittwer Pitlick, Rem Pitlick and Rhett Pitlick, sharing some of our family hockey journey, and apparently a few of you out there liked that episode, so here's our swing at (Part 2) of the Pitlick Family Hockey Journey.
Rem Pitlick and I take our time and navigate through segments of our hockey life together, sharing some of our hockey experiences, lessons learned, covering a variety of topics, with a heavy emphasis on mentors. It doesn't matter what your passion is, if you're striving for the higher mountains of your particular sector, step one is to find someone that has already accomplished what you desire and learn from their journey. For most of us listening here today, hockey is our thing, and if that's you, sit back, grab something to drink, a snack and settle into your favorite easy chair, as Rem and I are going to share the path that we traveled, are traveling, and the team of people he's used or still uses today. We're going to be doing something for the first time on the Hockey Journey Podcast, and that's having my wife, who was an elite international gymnast, on the show, as well as both of my boys Rem (NHL MTL) and Rhett (D1 MN Gophers).
How the idea began for this segment was when Rem and his soon-to-be wife Kayla were cleaning out his childhood bedroom. They were recently engaged, congrats you two!! They were both flooded with emotions, as Rem's entire life was on the walls, in the draws and tucked away in storage bins under the bed. That's when he suggested that we get the whole family on the podcast and talk about our hockey travels thus far.
We have absolutely no idea how this is going to play out, but what I can promise you is that this is our story, it's been a journey for all of us to this point in time, it'll be authentic and from the heart. Our hope is that you might be able to grab on to one word, one concept, habit, or experience and add it to your own unique experience, and hopefully, the road you'll be traveling will now be with a bit more wisdom and knowledge so you can make the most informed decisions or choices.
With that being said, if this is your first time listening to the Hockey Journey Podcast, below I've provided a few links if you'd like to learn more about Team Pitlick. With that being said, Thanks for stopping by, we hope you enjoyed this episode and have a wonderfully productive day!!

My next guest, Dave Allison is a well-known and respected figure in the world of ice hockey. As a player, he had a solid career that spanned 10 years professionally, spending time in the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, as well as a brief stint in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens.
Mr. Allison showed he had some offensive potential in Juniors with the Cornwall Royals as well as a few years when he was a pro, but there was something else that drew him in, that he specialized in, and it has to do with two guys, leading with their fists. If you look at his career penalty minutes, when you see numbers like 298 minutes, 302, 332, 337 and 407 penalty minutes in a season, you are choosing to be a professional hockey fighter.
We'll also be talking about his coaching career that first began with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in 1986 where he was a player-assistant coach. In addition to being the proud owner of an uncommon amount of different home addresses around North America, his coaching career still continues today, as his latest gig was in Alaska last season. But at one time, he was again at the top of the mountain, when he was the head coach of the Ottawa Senators. That's where I first crossed paths with Coach Allison, when he was the head coach of the Senators American Hockey League Affiliate, the Prince Edward Island Senators.
It's going to be an amazing interview as Coach Allison is a personality and great storyteller as you see. So settle in, thanks for stopping in, enjoy the show and have a wonderfully productive day!!

My next guest is business performance coach Dr. Jared Sinclair and I'm super excited to have him on the show. Before he started helping people, their businesses and organizations reach higher levels of excellence, Mr. Sinclair was an active Marine, serving his country in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as a retired San Diago, California Police Officer and also holds a doctorate in Organizational Change and Leadership. So he maybe hasn't had a hockey journey, but he's definitely had an eventful life journey and we're going to hear all about it.
I know the reason Mr. Sinclair and the Sinclair Performance Institute came into my life, and that's so he can pass on his knowledge, his success formula that he's been teaching to a wide variety of clients, representing many different sectors in the business world and he's here to pass on that information to you. It doesn't matter if you're an actor, realtor, musician, mathematician, nonprofit founder, piano extraordinaire, entrepreneur, professional athlete or just a regular "Joe" trying to make today a little better than yesterday, the formula is pretty much the same across the board. If you want to go from average to good, to great, there are success intangibles you need to know about and learn and that's exactly what Dr. Jared Sinclair is going to be discussing with me here today. Thanks for stopping by and Enjoy the Show!!

My next guest, Brett Strot, is a former teammate of mine when we played at the University of Minnesota together, and it's been so many years since we've connected. He quietly went about business after college, pursuing his hockey passion and carving out a pretty impressive 10-year professional career. His path took him to a lot of different destinations, finally landing in Florida, and finishing his playing career in Jacksonville.
His transition into coaching kept him in South Florida, where today, he's regarded as one of the top hockey development coaches in the United States. This sediment has been reinforced as he's got a long history with the USA Women's hockey program, being on the staff of teams that competed in the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship, the IIHF Women's World Championship, the Four Nations Cup and was the Associate Head Coach of the 2018 Gold Medal USA Women's Olympic Team.
He's currently the president of Hockey International Developmental Training & Testing which has locations in Florida and Minnesota. Is the Owner of the Tampa Bay Juniors Hockey Program and is the creator of the stickhandling product "Ultimate Hockey Hands."
We'll start at the beginning and work our way through his life, ending with what he's doing today, and who's benefiting from his guidance and experiences. He's one of the smartest men in the game today and I know you're going to enjoy hearing his hockey journey. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy this episode and have a wonderfully, productive DAY :)

My next guest, former NHLer Peter Worrell, has a big presence when he enters a room. With a height of 6'7" and weighing 230 pounds of lean muscle mass, he probably wasn't very fun to play against. One of the most feared heavyweight fighters in the NHL back in the day and I was fortunate to be able to play with "Big Pete" when we were down in South Florida playing for the Florida Panthers.
Mr. Worrell is a Caribbean Canadian who moved from Barbados to Montreal when he was 3 years old. His hockey journey was more challenging than most, being a black man playing in a mostly white sport. That's only part of the story as like all hockey players, there are ups and downs each and every season. Peter had his share of difficulties along the way, one in particular being, what would his eventual role be on a team, point producer, or NHL enforcer.
It's been over a decade since I've seen or talked to this former roommate on the road of mine. I can't wait to reconnect, hear his hockey journey and how he eventually played in 391 NHL games scoring 19 goals and amassing 1554 penalty minutes over a seven year NHL career. That's a lot of scrappy doing!!
We'll start at the beginning and work our way through his life, ending with what he's doing today and who's benefiting from his guidance and experiences. I know you're going to Love hearing Peter Worrell's hockey journey. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy this episode and have a wonderfully, productive DAY :)

This episode will be dedicated to those of you who choose to be different, to swimming upstream once in a while, why, because we can and we like the challenge. Some may say it's freakish or an obsession. It's about going to bed at the same time every night and getting up before the rest of the world, when ultra discipline is required to reach the objective. If you want results that will freak people out, let's learn from freaks that were freaking out people before freaking out people was a thing. I'll be referencing a few books during this segment. If something resonates with you from a particular title, I've put the links below to Amazon, where you can pick up a copy of your own, so you can read it in its entirety. As always, I appreciate you stopping by, I hope you get inspired by the end of this episode and are excited to see what's next with the Hockey Journey Podcast. My next guest is former NHLer, broadcaster, and current podcaster Jason York, is back for part 2 of his hockey journey, as he's apparently one of the special ones and gets a second episode because we couldn't get-r-done in the first one. We wrapped up part 1 of his journey right when he arrived in Ottawa and started playing for the Senators. If you liked his first episode, you're going to love this one equally as well. Looking in the mirror when we don't reach our goals can be tough, as it requires admitting defeat. However, three words often drive my progress: willpower, discipline, and persistence. When I experience a successful day, it's usually because I've demonstrated these qualities, moving the needle forward and fueling my quest for achievement.
I may not be an expert on developing willpower, discipline, or persistence, but books have inspired me tremendously over the years. I want to share some titles and quotes that have motivated me to become a better version of myself, one day at a time. You'll find links to some books I mention in this episode below. I don't know if you've noticed over the last year of me pumping out The Hockey Journey Podcast episodes. For solo one's like this one, there's a constant revisit to certain topics. Like productivity, goal setting, habits, purpose, leadership, peak performance, mastery, and mental toughness. Why do I keep going back to the well, talking about the same concepts over and over and over again? Because, if you're not thinking about it every day, taking action every day to execute more consistently, you'll never be able to become really good at anything, unfortunately.
If you're pursuing something big, one of the best strategies to help you along the way is to learn from others who have already traveled that path or find similarly driven individuals to learn about. As you know by now, I like to include some book quotes to help drive the points home. If you want to solve the mystery and maybe find the code to why some people are so much better than others, it doesn't matter what the sport or life sector it is, let's hear the advice the best of the best are receiving and practicing. I've put the links to all the titles below if you're interested in picking up your own copy.

My next guest is former NHL defenseman Jason York, who was selected 129th overall in the seventh round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. This Nepean, Ontario native played in 757 NHL games recording 42 goals, 187 assists for 229 points, and registering 621 penalty minutes over a 13-year professional hockey career. One of the NHL stops he had in addition to Detroit, Anaheim, Nashville, and Boston, was in Ottawa, where we played together for 3 seasons with the Senators during the mid-'90s.
I can't remember the last time I saw the guy, so I'm excited to reconnect and see what's been going on in his life since his playing days, but more importantly, let's start with hearing about his hockey journey. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the interview, and have a wonderful and productive day!

Get ready to be inspired by an incredible story that is sure to tug at your heartstrings! In my next interview, I had the privilege of speaking with Easton Schultz, the founder of the Hudson Wisconsin Special Hockey Program, and let me tell you, his journey is nothing short of remarkable.
Easton's story began when he was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder at four. Despite his challenges, he found solace in the Learn to Skate program offered through the Hudson Hockey Association. From that day on, he was hooked on hockey and eventually worked up to the high school varsity team, even winning a state championship under his mentor, Davis Drewiske.
But Easton's true greatness was revealed after he suffered a severe collarbone injury while running track during his junior year of high school. Then, he met Ian Witt, and their friendship changed their lives forever. Together, they founded the Hudson Wisconsin Special Hockey Program, which aims to bring hockey to athletes of all abilities.
Easton's journey is one of perseverance, determination, and a deep passion for making a difference in the lives of others. His story will inspire you to pursue your dreams, regardless of obstacles. To learn more about Easton's remarkable journey and how you can support the Hudson Wisconsin Special Hockey Program, click on the link below. Today Coach Lance pays tribute to the Minnesota Blades AAA Hockey Club, John Arko. For nearly two decades, there's been a Pitlick wearing a Minnesota Blades jersey, and Coach Lance has been on the ice helping develop the next group of passionate Minnesota hockey players.
The "Pitlick Crew" spent many hours traveling to compete in weekend tournaments or high-performance festivals, bringing together some of the most talented hockey players from across the United States and Canada.
Coach Lance is forever grateful for having the opportunity to be part of the vision of founding Minnesota Blades pioneer John Arko. He sits down with the current CEO, Terrance Moore, to discuss AAA Hockey, the history of the Minnesota Blades, and most importantly, remembering the guy who had the idea to help a small group of passionate hockey players chase their dream with a bunch of other like-minded individuals.

Ladies and gentlemen, put your skates on and get ready to glide into our next interview! I am thrilled to introduce a man with ice in his veins and a business on his mind. He's the one, the only Josh Healey!
This Canadian-born hockey star has been hitting pucks since his days in Alberta, and now he's making waves in his 7th season as a pro with the San Diego Gulls. But it's not just his slapshot that's impressive - it's his business acumen!
Josh and I first crossed paths when he played alongside my son Rem for the Milwaukee Admirals back in 2019. As we chatted, he revealed he'd been working on a secret project for years, all while tearing up the ice. And what is this project, you ask? Only the coolest thing since Zambonis - The Sports Aux app!
This platform is a godsend for hockey players looking to get recruited - for both men and women! If you want to get scouted, you must get on this app faster than a puck flying toward the goal. And if you're not convinced yet, let me tell you - Josh is like the Mario Lemieux of business. He's read all the books, done all the research, and created a platform that's the real deal.
So don't be a benchwarmer, folks. Check out The Sports Aux app and get ready to score some goals. I'll even provide you with the link, so there are no excuses! And while you're at it, check out the books he's been reading too. Trust me. They're more exciting than a game-winning goal in overtime.
Thanks for tuning in, folks. It's been a real hoot, and I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I did. Until next time, keep your stick on the ice and your head in the game!

My next guest on the show is Barbero Caico, who was recently introduced to me by my oldest son, Rem. I'm grateful that Rem made the connection for several reasons. Firstly, Barbero is an amazing person, and our correspondence so far has been really enjoyable. Secondly, I always love talking to people who are passionate about something, especially when it comes to health and wellness. If learning from their experiences can help others become better versions of themselves, then that truly excites me.
As I prepared for the interview, I faced some challenges researching Barbero. Unlike most people, he seems to have a minimal online presence, but I discovered that he had faced some tough times growing up. However, he found a book called "How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy" by Paul Chek in his early 20s, which was a turning point in his life. This book led him on a path that has brought him to where he is today, which I assume is a super happy place for him now.
I'll be sharing all the important information from our interview below so you can learn more about Barbero and what we covered. Thank you for joining us. Enjoy the conversation, and I hope that today is an even better day for you than yesterday :)

As we settle into the new year, with hopefully a slightly new and improved daily routine, I always think it's a good idea to take a few minutes and go over in our heads, our relationship with mistakes, hardships or failures. It is a relationship you know, and the better we can understand it and how those few words we try to avoid, for some at all costs, are the critical stepping stones to our future successes. Always remember, no mistakes, no hardship, no failures, no successes.
You know I love to read and I'd like to share with you a few books and related quotes that may get you thinking a little differently about your relationship with mistakes, self-sabotaging thoughts, and negative thinking, in order to increase the likelihood of totally crushing your short and long-term goals.
For the following books I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets and goodness from each of the titles. If one connects with you by the end of this episode, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I've put the links below. My next guest is truly a hockey pioneer, but he'd prefer to remain in the background, giving praise and credit to
others around him. In 1959, Murray Williamson became an All-American in hockey at the University of Minnesota.
Won silver as the head coach of the men's US Olympic hockey team in 1972 Sapporo, Japan. Was the coach and
GM of the first US National Jr. team that participated in the inaugural World Junior Tournament held in Leningrad, Russia
in 1973. In 2001, he was named one of the fifty most significant players and coaches in Minnesota hockey history.
This only scratches the surface of all that Mr. Williamson not only accomplished, but has contributed to the game of hockey.
For his full story, because we won't cover his full journey in this episode, I encourage you to pick-up a copy of his recent book,

I was working out the other day, and a thought popped into my head. Is there a proven, bulletproof way to build an elite hockey player? I went through the experience as a player, raised two boys who have done well, have a nephew playing in the NHL, as well as a long list of players I've trained over the last decade and a half that have earned a college scholarship, major junior roster spot, professional contract or became an Olympic medalist.
Barry Karn and I's lives parallel each other in so many ways, and one of those ways is he also has a long list of players that have gone on to or are continuing to do great things well. So logically, it made sense to partner with him on this podcast, combining our lifetime of hockey experiences and see if we can help you build an elite hockey player. Thanks for stopping by, have a great day, and enjoy the conversation!!

Today I'm going to spend some time discussing becoming a Master Craftsman or Craftswoman.
It could be hockey or anything that someone might pursue in life. But what you'll soon find out, the path, the principles, and the process of chasing mastery are all the same across the board.
One way I increase my knowledge of anything is by learning from experts in that particular field. For this episode, I've found people that have made the topic of mastery their life's work, and I'd like to share with you some of their most important and impactful findings, with the hope that the wisdom you're about to hear will help you get closer to whatever it is you're trying to master!
For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each of the titles. If something resonates with you from a particular book, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own by the end of this episode and read it. I've put the links below. Enjoy the episode. Now that everyone knows I'm doing podcasts, I'm getting requests to do an episode on a specific topic. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to do one on adversity, as a couple of my players were trying to get over a wall that suddenly appeared in their lives.
But now that the winter season is rocking, the common theme being asked by these student-athletes is how to play at a higher level consistently. Why do you think that is? Because everyone loves to win a game once in a while, and the only way to do that is by playing at your best. Is there a performance advantage that you have yet to hear about? I hope we'll get closer to answering that question by the end of this episode.
Many have made the topic of peak performance their life's work, and I'm going to lean on them to help me out here and share with you some of their most important and impactful findings, with the hope that the wisdom you're about to hear will help you become a little better version of yourself!
For the following books I'm going to refer to, please know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a specific book, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own by the end of this episode and read it. I've put the links to each below. As the first winter snowfall has been deposited here in Minnesota, that can mean only one thing, and the hockey season has begun. Being around the game of hockey my whole life, I was tied to a team each season, as a player till 32 years of age or as a youth hockey coach for 17 years after that.
A hockey season can have so many storylines by springtime. Individuals and teams might have nothing but success and flow the entire year, but that would be the experience of the minority, as most of us travel a road packed with extremes in the next 4 to 6 months that will test our character and resolve.
I remember being on or coaching several teams where I thought we had a chance to do some damage, only to have the team be decimated by injury or sickness at critical times where we couldn't recover. Covid was the perfect example of this, as it forced teams to not think too far in the future, and they learned how to battle when their backs were up against the wall.
This podcast is about life experiences that develop into acquiring leadership qualities. Some of you out there may already be on a path of leadership, others maybe haven't thought about it much until now. What I'd like to do with this episode is share with you some quotes from some books that helped me learn more about what leadership is and how to acquire more leadership qualities. I consider myself a quiet lead-by-example player, but I am not an expert in the field. But, many have made the topic of leadership their life's work and I'd like to share with you some of their most important and impactful findings, with the hope that the wisdom you're about to hear will help you become a little better version of yourself!

We live in a very distracting world, and when you reflect on, let's say, the last 30 days, for me a lot of times I ponder and say to myself, "the last 30 days were a blur. I had goals I wanted to accomplish, but I was so busy that I can barely remember the days. The needle wasn't moved much in the direction I'd hoped for, and once again, my most important objective or want in life stays as a wish because there is no consistent action attached to it.
I want to share with you some quotes from some books that helped me learn strategies on how to become more productive and get more of the essential things done each day. I'm a much-improved individual but not an expert in the field. But, many have made the topic their life's work, and I'd like to share with you some of their most important and impactful findings, hoping you'll learn how to accomplish your most important and crazy goals more quickly!

Everyone should be settling into their season by now, some of you making the team you wanted, and others did not. That's in the past, and we can't do anything about it now, but what we can do is react proactively and focus our attention on what's in our control. If there's a change you want to make in your life, the odds are pretty good that you're going to have to implement a new habit. In this episode, I'll be doing a deep dive into how we can develop rock-solid habits.

My next guest Hans Skulstad; I've been looking forward to having him on the show because he's dedicated his life to helping others navigate through some challenging events and circumstances after earning his master's in Counseling Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of St. Thomas.
After years in the field and gaining experience in the sector, there was a gravitational pull toward sports and working with athletes, creating the Center for Sports and the Mind. Some of the most challenging conversations we'll face in our lives happen when we're by ourselves, alone, wrestling around with our thoughts.
Mental toughness, mental illness, mental training, meditation, mental health, mental fitness, and mindfulness, what does it all mean? If you've ever had questions or wanted to learn more about any of those above, you'll want to have to listen to this episode. To learn more about Mr. Skulstad, what he specializes in, and how he's been helping individuals become the best versions of themselves, check out the links below. How do you view adversity? For many of us, it's something to be avoided
at all costs, while another group of individuals views and uses adversity as a source of
strength.
My relationship with adversity has been an up-and-down battle over the years, but
now at the medium-paced age of 55, it doesn't bother me anymore. I've accepted
that adversity is always coming, and there's nothing I can do to stop it. I’m only
in control of how I react to it.
This evolution didn't pop into my head one day. I’ve used resources, books, podcasts, and
videos to find ways to manage adversity best. The books I'm going to reference opened
my mind to a different way of thinking, and I hope they will have the same effect on you.
I've included the link to each title if something resonates with you and you want to pick up
a copy of your own and read it. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the episode, and

Episode Description
For today's episode, I'll be discussing digital distraction and how we're playing a game when online, where our attention is being harvested intentionally to further someone else's agenda.
I hope that after listening to this episode, a door will open for you, as it did for me, to take a closer look at where our time is going when using the internet, more specifically, our smartphones. Are we using them as a tool to optimize,
or is it like a vampire, extracting precious minutes from every one of us, one-click or scroll at a time?
For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each of the titles. If something resonates with you from a particular book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you

When you win a Stanley Cup, like my next guest Ben Clymer, you get a little extra at times, because of earning that rare achievement. Like what we got going on here today. Most of my guests get one episode to tell their journey, but not for this guy. He for sure gets 2 episodes, and who knows how today goes, we may need a 3rd one in order to git-r-all-In! We'll pick up where we left off last episode, where it's 2am, Mr. Clymer and the Tampa Bay Lightning just won the Stanley Cup and he's celebrating with his two 80 year old Grandmothers, all with gin and tonics in hand.
He'll continue telling his hockey player journey that saw him leave the sunshine state for Europe for a season, then the Washington Capitals, Chocolate Town USA and some exciting times playing in Russia. His retirement led him back to the University of Minnesota and was admitted to the Carlson School of Management, earning a degree in Finance and eventually starting his own company - Abbey Street - Learn More - https://abbeystreet.com/
Mr. Clymer will tie up all the loose ends by revealing the story of how he's become one of my favorite hockey broadcastor's working today. If you want to hear the continued story of striving for excellence in all segments of one's life, you'll want to settle in for this episode. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy part 2 of Ben Clymer's Hockey Journey :)
Ben Clymer is my next guest, and he definitely had a hockey journey that included State Championships, World Junior Tournaments, a D1 Scholarship, a year in the WHL, winning the Stanley Cup, and finishing his player journey over in Europe. He accomplished all of the above and more while picking up the sport at the age of 8 years old. Just a great human being, you're going to love his story! Thanks for stopping in and have an awesome day!
My next guest, Chris Hansen, is probably someone you've never heard of, but he's been my best friend since I met him back in 1979, and he's got a journey and story to tell. It includes hockey, fishing, dogs, 2 critical periods in his life where he almost died twice. The second and most recent event landed him in the ICU, in a coma, and hooked up to every monitoring and life-saving device available to keep his heart beating.
You'll hear his story of recovery from a traumatic brain injury and how it's manifested through a lot of sweat equity and passion into a non-profit, where Mr. Hansen and his band of love-giving gypsies are providing fishing trips and experiences for Military Veterans, First Responders, Police, and Fire, as well as Teachers and Health Care Workers since 2015.
If that wasn't enough, Chris is a realtor by trade and has given back 25% of his commission to our hero clients, close to $200,000 over the last 5 years. Chris and his partners, Mike Ferrell and Katie Lavander, do all the fundraising for Time on the Water, so our heroes get to have these fishing excursions at no cost.

During my playing days, I liked Stephen King and James Patterson, sprinkling in some self-help books. But after retiring from the National Hockey League and not even getting close to winning a Stanley Cup, my curiosity to witness people triumphing at the highest levels, somehow performing perfecting during a playoff run, or pulling off the impossible at an event or tournament continues to grow year after year.
These sports moments and the characters who played their particular role happen all the time to people, but for most of us, if we've even heard of the story, we rarely know the whole journey and all that went into preparing for that moment in time. For today's episode on the Hockey Journey Podcast, I want to share some fantastic sports stories that inspired me, and I hope they'll do the same for you.
For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a particular book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I'll put the links to each of the titles in the description.
My next guest, John Vanbiesbrouck, was pretty good at goaltending craft. This Detroit, Michigan native took a different hockey path, deciding to swim against the current, forgoing the traditional college route, and going up to Canada to play major junior. In 1981, he was drafted in the 4th round, 72nd overall to the New York Rangers, where he played most of his career. He also played for New Jersey, Philadelphia, the New York Islanders, and down in Florida, where he backstopped the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals. He's won the Vezina Trophy, was an NHL All-Star several times, holds several goaltending records, played in 882 NHL games, was inducted into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame, and is currently the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the conversation! Have a great day!!
My next guest Josh Tucker, established the lane he would travel for the rest of his life close to 2 decades ago. The road he's experienced, through thousands of consultations, has propelled him to the level of being an expert in the field, and that's the vision training sector, precisely his company True Focus Vision. He's regarded as the industry leader in helping kids and adults with reading, and athletes of all ages, including players at the highest levels like the NHL, MLB, NFL, and Olympians, working on optimizing their craft. His therapy, training systems, and different tools he uses also assist in concussion recovery and overall improved wellness.
Mr. Tucker is a former goalie, has coached in the past at the High School hockey level and has been a trainer for nearly 20 years specializing in one thing, vision training. We're going to hear his journey from player, to coach, to trainer, to business owner, to industry leader, so we have a lot to talk about. For more information about how Josh and True Focus Vision are helping people and where you can find him, I've included his link below. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the conversation! I know that this podcast is directed toward the hockey community, but this episode is for everyone because if we don't have our health if we get sick, we can't do anything. For the longest time after retiring from the NHL, nutrition didn't make much of a blip on the radar screen. I hate to admit it, but there was a period of time, where I'd eat an entire extra large pizza by myself, never thinking about the long-term health consequences I could face years down the road. I'm grateful that my oldest son Rem, made educating himself on nutrition a high priority, and his knowledge creeped into the Pitlick household, and our view on food is completely different than it was 5-6 years ago, and all I can tell you is that words like fruits, vegetables and organic now make up the majority of our grocery list. Over the past 8 months, I've made reading or listening to something related to nutrition, content that I consume now every week. I'm constantly surprised at how much I still don't know. For this episode, I'll be quoting 3 books that I've provided the links to each of the titles, if you want to pick-up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. With that being said, thanks for stopping by and enjoy the show.

My next guest is Zac Headrick, founder of 24/7 Hockey and is someone I've been following for close to 10 years now, as he's been consistently putting out free content via YouTube videos and emails to help players and coaches improve their skills, knowledge, and performance. I've always admired his persistence of effort over the years, as I know how much work it is to continually pump out some type of social content week after week.
He's a former player, coach, scout, and now a hockey off and on-ice skills, strength & speed instructor, just to mention a few of the job descriptions he's had or operates now. He quietly started a hockey business and has maintained and grown it over the years into a successful enterprise. I want to find out how he did it and, more importantly, how he's been helping hockey people get better. In today's episode, we're going to be discussing procrastination. If there's one thing I deal with daily, almost on an hourly basis, and that's procrastination. I go to bed knowing what I want to accomplish the next day, with 100% certainty that I'll have no problem knocking each item off the list one by one with ease, but for years and years, I could never get all the things I thought I could get done from the planning session the night before. Has this ever happened to you?
When I finally had enough and wanted to know why my productivity was slower than others, so I started to track where my 24 hours each day were going. After a few days of close analysis, all the signs pointed to one single affliction, I'm a procrastinator! But with that being said, I'm a much-improved procrastinator 30 years later, meaning procrastination doesn't get as many minutes or hours a day from me as it once did.
I'd like to share some quotes from books that have helped me beat procrastination most days. If you find one of the titles resonating with you by the end of the episode, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I'll put the links below. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the episode and have a great day!!

My next guest is former WHA player and NHLer Bill Butters. I've been excited about this interview since I booked it, as Mr. Butters was one of my coaches when I played at the University of Minnesota. He made a huge positive impact on my life, during the four years I played for the Gophers.
Mr. Butters is a Minnesota Native and carved his path to professional hockey, eventually the NHL, not by putting many points up on the board, but by bringing crowds to their feet, by what he could do with his fists. Back in the 1970s, if you weren't a skill guy or Canadian, the only way to make it past college hockey, if you were an American, was by fighting, and that's exactly what Mr. Butters did, playing 7 professional seasons, playing 299 games and registering 607 penalty minutes.
Before turning pro, Mr. Butters played four seasons at the University of Minnesota, where he was mentored by two hockey icons, Glen Sonmor and legendary coach Herb Brooks. Those two would weave in and out of Bill's life and support him as there were some struggles along the way. Let's not forget his wife Deb, who also stood by his side during a dark period of his journey.
Mr. Butters enjoyed a 14-year college coaching career as an assistant at the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, and Bethel College. Ever since I've known him, he's had a higher power guiding him along the way. That passion and commitment is seen clearly through his work over the years with Hockey Ministries International and Christian Hockey Camps International, mentoring hockey players worldwide, and spreading the word of the Lord.
In addition to all of the hockey stuff, he's a husband of 50 years this year, father of 3, and grandfather of 7, so we have a lot to talk about. I've included the link to Hockey Ministries International if you'd like to learn more about what Mr. Butters has been involved with for over 40 years. Enjoy the interview, and thanks for stopping by for a listen!! Have a great Day!!

So I'm a big believer in writing down my short and long-term goals and looking at them daily. I've heard several examples of highly successful people who carry their goals written down on a small piece of paper and keep them in their wallets or purses. Anytime they feel distracted, discouraged, or unmotivated, they pull out that piece of paper, read their goals, and then, they get back to work.
This 42% increased success rate if you write down your goals is free and available to anyone. I always say, "If it's free, it's for me!" I strongly suggest that you give it a try this season regarding your hockey objectives. It'll be good practice because you should know this strategy can also be used in every other aspect of your life when you want to accomplish something.

My next guest, Lee Erickson has worn many hockey hats. His journey began as a player, progressing to on-ice skills instructor, hockey coach, owner and operator of the Lumberyard Hockey Sports Center, owner and operator of the Rivertown Hockey AAA program, married, a father of three very accomplished college student-athletes, and if that wasn't enough, he's an inventor and has developed a vision training aid, that helps hockey players work on playing the game more with their eyes up than they are down. Descriptive words used to describe tryouts would be stressful, nerve-racking, tense, and anxious. I have to admit; that when I was a player, I was also nervous for every tryout I ever had to go through. So, if you’re feeling this way, it’s normal, but is there a way to reduce or eliminate all of those negative, non-productive thoughts?
The answer is absolutely, and shortly, I'm going to give you the 5 tips and secrets to guarantee you a much stronger showing during your next tryout. If you're a player that's maybe not as skilled or talented as many of the other players you'll be trying out against, I know with 100% certainty that what you're about to hear will help in a big way, if you execute the plan. Episode Description
It's been said that "knowledge is power," If that's the case, wouldn't you want to find the fastest and most effective ways to gain this knowledge? I know I did, and I would like to pass on some quotes from books I've read in the past that helped me improve my learning strategies and techniques.
I hope you'll discover some unknown story or scientific study related to best learning practices and apply a few of these newfound learning enhancers to your daily life and see if they work for you. For the following books, I'm going to reference that I'm only scratching the surface of all the golden nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a certain book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. Did you know that researchers did a study where they interviewed people who were on their deathbed, asking what their biggest regrets in life were? Wishing they were happier more was consistent across the board. Interesting, so shouldn't we learn from these people and strive not to have the same regret when that time comes for us?
There is so much negativity in the media today. I've done my best to limit the negative social media from infiltrating my days. Still, it's hard as it's the norm to say, "did you hear about what happened downtown? I can't believe so and so tweeted that about so and so," in daily random conversations. But does it have to be that way? Do we have to play along with the masses and keep mindlessly contributing to this non-necessary practice, by passing on negativity through our conversations?
For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a certain book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I've included the links below. How many times have you heard a coach say in a post game interview, after a tough loss, that the reason for the poor performance was because the team wasn't mentally prepared? I heard that speech as a player, and I used it as a coach over the years. But when I really thought about what it actually means, not being mentally prepared, I still don't know. So we're going to start investigating the topic and here is the first installment on Mental Toughness.
I'm going to reference, the following books, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each of the titles. Teaser Clip - Mia Hamm - 10:43-11:53
Quote #2
THE VISION OF A CHAMPION
“My favorite description of what excellence in the sports world looks like comes from Anson Dorrance, the legendary University of North Carolina women’s soccer coach. He was driving to work early one morning, and as he passed a deserted field, he noticed one of his players off in the distance doing extra training by herself. He kept driving, but he later left a note in her locker: ‘The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion when no one else is watching.’ The young woman, Mia Hamm, would go on to become one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Having a big dream—and a clear vision of what you will look like while pursuing competitive excellence—always inspires greatness. What is your dream goal? What does excellence in your game look like when you are fully dialed in and passionately pursuing your dream—becoming the best you can be in your sport? Make the description vivid and powerful enough to give you that burst of adrenaline when you need it, a burst that can only come from connecting completely with your heart’s true desire.” (End Quote)
My next guest, Pierre McGuire, has worn many hockey hats over the years. From hockey player to college, then NHL coaching stints, scouting positions, and management assignments, but is probably best known for his TV Broadcasting career with TSN, NBC Sports, and NBC Sports Network, where he's covered the NHL, World Juniors, and the Olympics. He's also been developing players via camps and clinics over the years, and I just so happened to cross paths with this special individual in the mid-'90s when I was with the Ottawa Senators. Super excited to reconnect, as I don't think I've ever met someone who knows more people in the sport of hockey but, more importantly, has at least one detailed story about that person, and we're going to hear a few of them today. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the episode!
What is Meditation? Before I decided to learn more about this self-improvement practice, I have to be honest with you, my perception of meditation was someone sitting on a mountain side, on a flat surface, with their legs crossed, hands on top of the knees with one of the fingers, pressing against the thumb on each hand, making a circle, with a straight back, head tilted back slightly, eyes closed, and with a calming hum, purring in a consistent cadence, Huuuuuummmmmmmm, Huuuuuuuuummmmmm. Maybe some of you out there have the same mental image.
It seems that for every high performer I read about or listen to, the majority of them put meditation as a high-priority habit and dedicate daily time to the practice. This is all new to me and I look forward to understanding this world-wide healthy living tradition or method. Below are the books I'll be using to better understand meditation. Enjoy the Episode!

My next guest on the show is Scott Bond from True Foundation Hockey. This Minnesota native, who played his high school hockey at Frank B. Kellogg and then moved on to juniors, where he was on his way to a promising career, but his life changed in a moment. Mr. Bond suffered a severe spinal injury that almost ended his dream to play college hockey, but through faith, determination and a belief in himself that anything is possible, 2 years after the injury he returned to the ice and played 4 full seasons at Hamline University, graduating with a Counseling Psychology, Physical Education/Exercise Science degree, with minors in Health and Coaching Philosophy.
After retiring from playing, Scott has worn many hats including head hockey coach, director, WHL Scout, strength and conditioning coach, on-ice skills instructor and is a disciple of pioneering skating coach Jack Blatherwick, and also is the Founder, President and Coach in Chief for True Foundation Hockey. Another journey from someone who is heavy in determination, perseverance, faith and grit. I know you're going to love this interview and the pillars Coach Scott stands for. If you have a daughter that plays hockey and you haven't heard of Kim McCullough or Total Female Hockey, then you're going to want to stick around for this episode, because she's one of the most respected hockey coaches, trainers, instructor and educator in the game today. This Toronto native didn't start playing hockey till she was 13, but somehow figured out a way to earn a college scholarship at prestigious Dartmouth College, shout out to the Big Green, where she earned a degree in both molecular biology and moral philosophy, and then a Master's Degree from York University in Neuroscience and Kinesiology, apparently, a self proclaimed nerd.
After an impressive college career, (130 points in 127 games) very solid, she also enjoyed 6 years as a professional player, before retiring and then began her entrepreneurial journey, starting Total Female Hockey 2008. Since then, she's amassed a resume that very few can match in this world hockey community. Check this out - Coach Kim has worked with over 8000 players, 1000 coaches, and 150 teams, from novice to National teams. You want to hear a hockey journey of determination, perseverance and grit, you got it with Kim McCullough! Enjoy the episode :)

Most of us coaches, players, and parents, take for granted the enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes from a small group of individuals. Who orders the jerseys, takes registrations, and organizes the ice schedules. Who tracks payments and waivers, runs the tryouts, and puts together the committees and communicates to the parents?
So much of what we think about regarding a hockey association or organization, has to do with things that happen on the ice. But the true success of a program is based on what happens off the ice, so that on-ice games and practices seem to run effortlessly.
One company that's assisting hockey programs everywhere with behind the scenes optimization is LeagueApps.com
and I got their captain here today, Jeremy Goldberg, the President of LeagueApps. I hope you enjoy his story and how they're helping hockey and other sports organizations and associations run silky smooth!

My Mom and Dad looked at each other with blank faces, a short pause and then looked at me and said, the thought never crossed their mind. My Dad did interject this, he said, I don't know Lance, I guess I just remember telling you to be an engine and not a caboose. I chuckled and told him that I remember him saying that to me, and I'm grateful for that small, short, simple sentence, because it's stuck with me to this day. But what the conversation showed me, was that I'm sure there's all kinds of other parents, kids, teachers or instructors out there that might have the same question, how is leadership acquired or taught? What do those conversations sound like, when should they start in one's life, and, is there a competitive advantage out there, when it comes to acquiring leadership skills, available to everyone, that you might have missed the boat on? Well, I'm not an expert in the field of leadership, but there are many in this world who have made this quality or characteristic their life's work, and we're going to see what they have to say on the topic. For the following books I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each of the titles. Super excited to have my next guest Larry Olimb on the show, as we were former teammates at the University of Minnesota, where I was privileged to see this guy operate on a daily basis and witness greatness in the making. This guy made hockey look effortless. A Warroad Minnesota native, Mr. Olimb made a name for himself as he climbed the youth hockey ladder, as someone that could control a game and seaming score at will.
By the time he graduated from this small high school in northern Minnesota, he would lead the Warriors to 2 state tournament appearances and was awarded Mr. Hockey his senior year, which goes to the top male high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota. In 1987, he was drafted by the hometown Minnesota North Stars in the 10th round, 193 overall.
In 1988, Larry would move down to the Twin Cities and began his college career at the University of Minnesota, where he continued to show his dominance putting up 24 goals, and 56 assists for 80 points in his final college season. When his 4 years at the U came to an end, he ended up becoming the Gophers' all-time assists leader, surpassing the legendary John Mayasich.
Mr. Olimb had a professional career that lasted 3 years before retiring from the sport.
He's married, a father of 3, in the real estate game, and most recently, was announced as the new coach for the Orono High School girls hockey team, so we have a lot to chat about. I hope you enjoy the conversation!!
My next guest is Joe Dziedzic and I'm super excited to hear his hockey journey. Joe grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he spent his childhood playing football, hockey and baseball. By the time he finished his high school career he had college scholarship offers for all 3 sports.
In 1990, his senior year at Edison High School, he won Mr. Hockey, which is awarded to Minnesota's best male high school hockey player, and later that same year he was drafted in the 3rd round, 61st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins. After high school, he began his college career with the hometown team, the Minnesota Gophers. Following 4 years of schooling and hockey growth, he would sign with the Penguins and go on to play in 130 NHL games with Pittsburgh and at the time, the Phoenix Coyotes, but it was a career cut short because of an eye injury.
After his retirement he got into coaching at the team level and also doing small group skill development training through JD Hockey. He's currently the head coach at Minneapolis High School and was the 2022 Minnesota High School Coach of the year, so we have a lot to talk about.

If I look back on my life so far, there has always been a constant year after year, there is something I've always wanted to change or improve in my life. For over a decade it was wanting to get more fit and eat healthier because after I retired from playing, that part of my life was neglected for a long time. As I started to research how to implement change in one's life, a recurring theme quickly revealed itself, habits. There wasn't a book I read, video I watched or podcast I listened to, that had a high performer who didn't have rock-solid habits as their pillars for how they operated on a daily basis.
So how do you go from wanting something, to actually getting it, apparently, your daily habits are pretty important? Here are some of my favorite books that may help answer some of these questions. I'll be providing you with some key quotes from each of the books, but know that I've not even scratched the surface of what other game changing ideas and points are in each of the titles. Enjoy the episode :)

Summer is officially here and is a time when a kid can make some huge gains in a lot of different areas because you don't have the school commitments and for the next few months, you have more time on your hands. The question is are you going to use that time productively, or is that time going to use you, by wasting it watching others on your smartphone for hours a day, growing as an individual at the slowest pace.
Today, I want to challenge all of you listeners out there, especially the players out there, to add one new thing this summer, to your daily schedule, that you will spend 15-20 minutes a day executing. You have to view this challenge and whatever your goal is, in the same light as breathing, eating and sleeping. It's done every day for the whole summer.

My next guest, Chris Lukey is a native of St. Catharines Ontario, where he started his hockey career. As he progressed up the hockey ladder, he was drafted in the Ontario Hockey League where he spent 4 seasons playing for the Kingston Canadiens and Windsor Spitfires.
After a 2 year professional career, he climbed the ranks in the fire department and after 28 years retired as a Platoon Chief. If that wasn't enough, Mr. Lukey was a Power Edge Pro skill development instructor for several years, had a 30 year coaching career, and currently is helping hockey players and families navigate through the hockey opportunity process with his company My Hockey Resume, so we have a lot to talk about. My next guest, Ben Hankinson, has been someone I've wanted to get on the show since I got into the podcast game, because we spent a lot of time together years ago, as college teammates and training partners once we turned pro in the off-season. Mr. Hankinson is a Minnesota native, where he grew up going to school and playing sports for the powerhouse Edina Hornets. He went on to play Division 1 hockey for the hometown Minnesota Gophers.
In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Ben was drafted in the 6th round, 107th overall to the New Jersey Devils, playing 448 professional games over seven seasons, 43 of them in the NHL. Wasn't much for goal scoring, but did carve his way to the NHL by chucking the knuckles a bit, as he was fighting in the heavyweight division. Those were scary individuals!! He's currently a certified NHLPA player Agent with Octagon Hockey, so we have a lot to discuss. Enjoy the conversation!

Chris Phillips Hockey Journey EP3Chris Phillips is my next guest and I'm really looking forward to the conversation, as we were teammates for a couple of seasons in Ottawa. Mr. Phillips is a Canadian-born hockey player who played junior hockey for the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, Prince Albert Raiders, and Lethbridge Hurricanes. In 1996, he was selected first overall by the Ottawa Senators, not knowing at the time that he'd spend the next 17 years in the nation's capital, playing in 1179 career games. His charitable contributions to the community were many, one being Candlelighters which helps families that have a child battling cancer. He now is the co-owner of the Big Rig Brewery and is enjoying life after hockey with his wife Erin and 3 kids, Ben, Zoey, and Naomi. Enjoy the conversation :)
My next guest, Kerry Goulet was born and raised in Winnipeg, and it was there that he starred in junior hockey and later in ball hockey. His Winnipeg Grasshoppers, represented Manitoba in 8 national ball hockey championships, collecting the title in 1985. In 2006, Kerry was inducted into the Canadian Ball Hockey Association’s Hall of Fame.
He credits his experience with Hockey Manitoba and ball hockey with assisting in honing his skills for a successful international ice hockey career that saw him spend 16 seasons as a player, coach, and general manager with six different teams in the German 1st, 2nd and 3rd Division.
His years as a player saw him collect an astounding 1997 points in 505 games which earned Goulet the honor of having his jersey (#29) retired.
At the age of 52, he was asked back to his old club in Germany to attempt to collect 2000 points….which he did with a 5-3 win contributing a goal and two assists. Kerry’s coaching record was also sensational, with 312 wins in 452 games.
Kerry has dedicated much of his office energy to charitable causes, with his focus on concussions and spinal cord injuries in sport. His motivation behind the cause comes from his former hockey and ball hockey teammate, who suffered a broken neck, leaving him a quadriplegic.
One of the lessons learned from his friend Robert’s plight Goulet recalls was, “It is not what you collect along your journey…championships, scoring races, trophies, money, cars…. but what you give back, that will be your legacy.” A motto Kerry has adopted in his everyday life post being on the ice. Goulet is one of the founders of Stop Concussions, along with former NHLer Keith Primeau.
To learn more about Kerry's call to adventure, please visit www.stopconcussions.com Enjoy the conversation :)
Doctor Ryan Fader is my next guest and I'm looking forward to hearing his journey, as he's gotten some hockey sprinkled in there, but his true call to adventure is helping others, me being one of those people, as he fixed up my knee recently, and coach is operational again. Unfortunately, every player is going to get dinged up from time to time, but we're lucky to have people like Dr. Fader to help us get back on the ice as quickly as possible. But what if the injuries are self inflicted, due to early specialization and over-use? We're going to find out. This guy is a master at his craft and I want to know how he got there!! My next guest is former NHLer, Tom Pederson. This Minnesota native played his youth and high school hockey for the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars. Then went on to play Division 1 college hockey for the hometown Minnesota Gophers. His strong play early in his freshman season resulted in a roster spot on Team USA in the 1988-89 prestigious World Jr. championship. In 1989 he was an 11th-round draft pick of the Minnesota North Stars, where he played 240 NHL games for the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs. He also spent some time playing professionally in Japan and Germany. If that wasn't enough, Mr. Pederson is also the creator of the Green Biscuit, so we have a fun discussion ahead of us.

Taylor Williamson is my next guest and she's had a hockey journey. This Edina Minnesota native was pretty good at hockey. Here's a list of some of her accomplishments. In high school, she played 87 games over the course of 4 seasons, recording 98 goals, 71 assists for 169 points. Was the Hornets captain her senior year where she also won Ms. Hockey, which is awarded to the best female high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota, and won a silver medal at the 2014 U-18 Women's World Championship in Budapest, Hungary. She ended up playing college hockey for her hometown Minnesota Gophers, winning a National Championship her freshman year. But at the conclusion of her sophomore season, Taylor's world got turned upside down, as she had to undergo emergency brain surgery. This is a hockey journey filled with successes, obstacles, perseverance, faith and a lot of grit!! Enjoy the conversation :)

You'll also hear stories about his father at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Games, where Team USA shocked the world, and also some interesting factoids regarding the movie Miracle on Ice. They'll wrap up the interview chatting about the Herb Brooks Foundation, which his Mother Patti, sister Kelley, and Dan maintain, keeping the flame of their legacy Father burning, continuing to grow the game of hockey like Herb did before them.

Since the school year will soon be wrapping up, I thought it made sense to have an episode about how to set and achieve your hockey goals. Summer is right around the corner and is a time when players can make significant gains in their hockey development, because you don’t have school and now have a bunch of extra hours to do whatever you want.
In the last 5-6 years, reading books consistently became important to me again, after a 15-year hiatus. I've gained so much knowledge from the extra effort I put in weekly, and have implemented a lot of the suggestions or tips into my daily routine. To help paint a clearer picture regarding how to set and achieve goals, I've picked 4 of my favorite titles that I'd like to incorporate into this episode. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you find the listen useful.

Once retired, Mr. Healy spent some time in the broadcasting sector, working for the CBC, TSN and Rogers. Tony Scott, is the founder and creator of the Youth Hockey Hub, a website covering Minnesota youth and high school hockey on both the boys and girls sides. The other day my oldest son Rem asked me if I'd ever heard of the hero's journey. I said that I hadn't, so he suggested I look up a guy named Joseph Campbell, who in 1949 wrote a book called The Hero with 1000 Faces. Little did I know, but so many movies that are so familiar to so many of us, are based on the framework and writings of Mr. Campbell's book, like Star Wars, Shrek, Batman, Harry Potter, The Lion King, and the Matrix to mention a few. I have to admit, this is all new to me, but it sparked something and now I want to learn more, because, as you'll find out, The Hero's Journey is really about each and every one of us. I brought back my good friend and mind mentor Don Ollivet, THe OLLIE Man to help explain what exactly is the Hero's Journey. Enjoy the conversation.
My next guest has had a fantastic hockey career. Dani Cameranesi is a Minnesota native who played youth hockey for the Wayzata Trojans and high school hockey for Blake high school. Dani played her college hockey for the University of Minnesota, where she potted 93 goals, 108 assists for 201 career points in 143 games, and won 2 national championships. She also had some international play where she won silver at the 2012 World U18 Championships, gold at the 2015 and 2019 world championships, silver at the 2021 world championships, a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics, And most recently, a silver medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics representing team USA.

My next guest, former Minnesota Wild strength and conditioning coach Kirk Olson, and I have connected together more than 20 years ago, as he was my strength and conditioning coach for the off-season when I was a player before he got his big break in the NHL. It's been a while since we've spoken, so I'm looking forward to the conversation. here today. Because the winter season just wrapped up and people are starting to plan their summer training schedules, I thought it was perfect timing to have Mr. Olson on the show.
I'm sure there are a lot of listeners out there that have questions regarding exactly when to start off-ice strength and conditioning training, and what exactly does that look like? I'll do my best to tap into all those potential questions and let Kirk give us his thoughts.
Enjoy the conversation!

I'm looking forward to my next guest, Rob Pallante, and hearing his hockey journey. This Canadian-born player earned a Division 1 scholarship to Michigan Tech University and played minor league pro hockey. Rob found himself in the role of a fighter or enforcer when back in the 1990s, that was a role, and that group of individuals was as tough as they came!!
Mr. Pallante's story has some self-inflicted hardships and an unexpected event that landed him in the hospital for 40 days, where he was given his last rights soon after he arrived. You'll hear of his defining moment, where he pivots and makes a shift to living a different life, one that now connects the mindset and body.
You can learn more about Rob Pallante, what he has going on in his life and how he's helping high-performance athletes build an invincible mindset.

When most of us think about a hockey Journey, we think of one through the eyes of a player, but not everyone has that opportunity, for a variety of reasons. But there's another group of individuals who've had a hockey journey, reached the top of their game, but just in a different sector. Fransois Gagnon has one of those stories and is currently a professional writer for RDS covering the historic Montreal Canadian franchise. From a journalist perspective, I don't think there can be a more prestigious position in the hockey world, especially if you're French Canadian.
Was a kid that early on knew he wasn't going to be more than a mediocre hockey player, but was mentored early by a friend's father that changed his trajectory and propelled Francois eventually to the upper crest of that industry. So many great stories and messages!! I really enjoyed the conversation and I hope you do as well. You can follow Francois on Twitter - @GagnonFrancois
Natalie Heising at a very young age knew that she wanted to do great things in hockey. Once she had that ignition, wanting to play college hockey, her real hockey journey began.
She refined her process on how to get better over the years and accomplished some amazing things throughout her career. Like a couple of gold medals, a scholarship to PennState, CHA Rookie of the Year and CHA Player of the Year her final season for the Nittany Lions.
She'll also be graduating with a Chemical Engineering degree. If you're a ,young girl hockey player, looking to model yourself after someone, you might have found the perfect person and episode. Enjoy Natalie Heising’s, Hockey Journey!

Don Olivett isn't the head coach of a team, but he is a HEAD COACH. I was really struggling with my thoughts during my first year pro and it was affecting my performance on the ice in a negative way. Ollie taught me a number of strategies to manage my mind more positively and those lessons I learned over 30 years ago, I still use to this day when I get off the rails from time to time. Great messaging, tips and advice!! If you're interested in connecting with Don, shoot me an email to goals@onlinehockeytraining.com and I'll get you in touch with him.
My next guest Tim Jackman would have scared the crap out of me if I had to play against him, as he was as tough as they came. This Minnesota native was a second-round pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2001 NHL draft. Played 2 seasons of college hockey at Minnesota State University, and became the first student-athlete from that university to play in the NHL. In his 14 year professional career, he ended up playing 483 games, in the show, putting up 75 points and 806 penalty minutes. A hockey journey that had a foundation of patience and endurance

Scott Bjugstad had the hockey player trifecta, by being able to play for his hometown college (Minnesota Gophers) and professional team (Minnesota North Stars), and the once in a lifetime experience of becoming an Olympian, and all of this was accomplished after the tragic loss of his Mother during his high school years. His story is one of self-belief, grit and determination, with his Mom always being the guiding force. What I love is that he continues to share his journey by passing on what he's learned and developed over the years since retiring, to the players he gets in front of on a weekly basis. Though he only played in 106 NHL games due to untimely injuries the first half of his career, he ended up carving out an incredible professional career, where in the end, he landed in the American Hockey League Hall of Fame, currently 4th on the All-Time AHL Scoring leader list. A former teammate of mine in Hershey Pennsylvania, who is still giving back, by passing on what he's learned along the way to aspiring hockey players in the Reno Nevada area with his daughter Trista. A native to Minnesota, where she grew up playing youth hockey, won a State High School Championship, was captain her senior year, and won Ms. Hockey as well that year. An award given to the best female high school player in the state. Let's hear about her hockey journey!
In part 4 and final episode on my journey as a hockey player, we'll cover the final 2 years I played for the Ottawa Senators, where I finally sign a one-way contract, I become a father. I had to deal with a roommate that was a sleepwalker, I make it to free agency, and had
to say goodbye to all of our Canadian friends, as we make a move down to South Florida and all the fun that came along with that ride. And finally, I have to answer the question every hockey player has to ask themselves at some point, can I continue on for one more year,
or is it time to retire?
Today we'll rewind the tape and begin by seeing if I get to stay in Hershey my 4th year, or will I be sent to the East Coast League. Then, the next chapter begins, Canada and the Ottawa Senators here I come. In this episode, I'll become an AHL All-Star, play in my first NHL game at the age of 27, become an everyday player in the NHL and was part of history, when the Senators make the playoffs for the first time in the modern era. And some other stories along the way.
Here we'll dipped our toes into the first 3 years of my professional hockey career, where I was exposed to extreme travel conditions that I never experienced before, and had an Olympic run that turned out to be the most challenging winter season I ever had. I scored my first professional goal, got my first tooth knocked out, got married, and now find myself going into training camp with the Hershey Bears back in the fall of 1993, after being a healthy scratch for over 3 months at the end of the previous season, thinking I’m heading down to the league below the AHL, the East Coast Hockey League, and that’s where we begin today.
In this episode, you'll learn about former NHLer Lance Pitlick, his childhood upbringing, introduction to the sport of hockey, some adversity he had to go through and hear stories of people that influenced him in a positive way. This portion of his hockey journey as a player is from the very beginning, throughout his youth, high school and college career, ending this episode when he signs his first professional contract.
