Welcome to the Bright Fierce Hearts podcast. This month's practice focuses on cultivating Gratitude for your body, breath, mind and others and the world around you.
This practice helps us to see the gifts we have within us and to be content with everything that we have, to shift our perspective to seeing where our lives are fruitful.
Emily talks a little about how this practice relates to the theme of “Dreams really do come True” - learning to cultivate a quality of attention that sees where our life is fulfilling, miraculous or simply enough.
You are then guided through a meditation practice to bring this quality of attention to your body, breath, mind and the world around.
Find a comfortable place to practice and perhaps have a journal handy for this one.
Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 27 of Bright Fierce Hearts where we are joined by Jeannette McGill, mountaineer, corporate executive and leadership facilitator. We talk about the highs and lows of following passions and dreams, as a woman, in mining and mountain climbing.
Jeannette is also a local to the Bright area in Australia, but she has climbed mountains and led groups all over the world, including USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Peru, Bolivia, China-Tibet and Kyrgyzstan. She has been to Kilimanjaro/Meru five times, in 2018 was the first South African female to summit Manaslu and in 2019 became the first South African to climb Dhaulagiri reaching 7400m before bad weather turned her around. Coming from a corporate executive background in mining, Jeannette has never been a stranger to challenging herself whether in the workplace or in the natural environment and she now leads and supports individuals and groups to achieve their own mountain adventures through her coaching and guiding.
In this episode we hear her story of exploring the mountains and studying science in South Africa, which led her into a career in the mines. Jeannette takes us from tunnels 4 km underground to 8km high peaks where she tested her physical and mental limits even more.
Our chat navigates the topics of what it is like to be a woman in industries that have been typically very male-dominated (both mining and mountaineering), how to approach big goals like climbing an 8000 metre mountain, what inspires her to guide others to achieve their mountain climbing goals (however large or small) and how we might find the delicate balance of masculine and feminine energies in our lives.
Mountains, dreams, life! These are all part of our spiritual practice and we really hope you enjoy this conversation.

In a world dominated by patriarchal notions of stoicism, ‘properness’, gentleness and softness as sought after human qualities, we explore what it means to embrace the full spectrum of emotions as a fierce woman in the world. Today, Kylie and Em threw away their notes and allowed themselves to feel their way through this powerful topic.
We investigate the big feelings like anger, rage, grief, disappointment and desire and look at how we have been socialised and taught to process them (or not as the case may be) and perhaps how we could better embrace these natural emotions and hold them as a community.
We talk about the mind, body connection and the issues that can occur (in our very tissues) when we hold these emotions in. We look at how these big emotions are playing out at the moment in this super globalised, but in many senses disconnected, world.
How much have we been programmed to, and wounded by, the teaching to show up and suppress our emotions (as both men and women in different ways) and to unlearn ? Why is it so important and healing for us to have the safety to honour and feel the full spectrum of our feelings?
We discuss mindfulness techniques and how these practices don’t teach us to turn away from these feelings but actually to embrace them and invite them in. Yes, they might transform you, but to try to stop them is when we see disease in mind and body.
Where we find wisdom is learning to not let those powerful emotions take us over and cause harm but to let them run their course and to be able to harness and channel their energy for powerful change.
We just loved having this conversation and hope that you enjoy coming along for this journey with us.

In today’s episode, Kylie talks about this month’s theme around bliss, harmony and alignment and contentment - where we see that our dreams have come true.
Whether it is within our relationships or family or work, our connection to the natural world, abundance of love and resources, happiness and joy - this theme gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the things that we have in our life and to cultivate deep gratitude for them.
We can also reflect on the ways in which we have created these things through the visions we had and the seeds that we planted as conscious creators in this life. This concept reminds us to take the wheel and drive.
We hope you have a dream-filled, wondrous day!

In today’s episode, Emily shares a short breathing exercise to invite in a sense of presence and relaxation.
When we connect with a full diaphragmatic breath, we enable our nervous system's relaxation response. This practice quickly allows us to create a deeper, fuller breath and invites a deep and conscious awareness of that breath so bring us into a relaxed and centred state.
When our nervous system is balanced and supported we can better find a sense of resilience as we face life’s challenges.
We hope that you enjoy the practice this week!

In today’s episode Em and Kylie chat about stress and burnout and how we might use Yoga techniques to better listen to our body’s stress signals and then how we might help to support ourselves and others through periods of stress.
This is a topic that has been on many folks’ minds during and as we emerge from the global pandemic.
We talk about what stress is and how it plays out in our body and nervous system - using science-based mindfulness research.
We explore the impact of the world around us, including the media and our incredibly busy Western culture, and our propensity to want to constantly achieve and to fix things! Yet, we also talk about the impact of our own mindsets and ways of responding to external challenges as well. How often do we celebrate and prioritise asking for help and taking time to rest in our society?
And, of course, true to our podcast vision we offer some practical tools and tips to help you manage stress and burnout in your own life using the philosophy and practice of Yoga and Mindfulness.
Enjoy the episode today and may it serve you well.

Welcome to Bright Fierce Hearts podcast. In this episode, Kylie and Em chat to The Adaptive Yogi, Jennie Jackson, about practicing and teaching adaptive and inclusive Yoga and coming to fiercely and unconditionally love your body.
Jennie Jackson’s vision and purpose is, as a ‘peaceful warrior’, to help her students achieve body peace and acceptance through her Hatha Yoga classes that focus on accessibility, inclusivity and body positivity. We met Jen in a coaching group and absolutely fell in love with her infectious kindness and humour and loved having this beautiful conversation with her.
We hear Jen’s journey to become a Yoga teacher and the milestones of acceptance of living in a curvy body, with a disability, along the way. We dive into the pitfalls of Western Yoga’s body focused, goal oriented culture. We talk about the philosophy that underpins Yoga, especially around non-harming and non-attachment.
Jen tells us about the barriers that she has faced along the way and shares some of the powerful stories of her students that are living with disabilities, who have benefited from Yoga practices. She also shares some beautiful practices that we can take into our lives to find ways to be more accepting of the bodies we are in and to offer ourselves fierce love.
Enjoy the conversation this week. We certainly did!

Welcome to Bright Fierce Hearts podcast. Today’s episode, Emily explores the different ways we can use our Yoga and meditation practice to build inner resilience.
Resilience can be defined as our capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, or in nature it is the capacity for something to spring back into shape! It can also be that ability to weather a storm and to thrive, rather than just survive, in difficult conditions. The image of the tree growing on the side of a wind beaten mountainside, or a flower poking through the cracks in the concrete. Life blooming.
Yoga offers wonderful tools and techniques to help us to listen in to our inner state. To know when we need to find more support - perhaps noticing when we are not bouncing back, but falling apart or breaking or burning out. We can call on practices that support, balance and calm our nervous system such as Pranayama, Nidra and Restorative shapes.
We can also use Yogic techniques such as mindfulness, san kalpa (intentions and affirmations) and maitri/metta (self love), as well as gratitude practice, to bring a positive mind-set to our life (without bypassing the difficulties that might be going on - just not adding the extra layer of judgment and self-criticism).
And, while we are building resilience within, we are never truly alone in this journey. Part of learning how to listen in to ourselves is also knowing when to reach out and call in external support, whether that is from your family, friends, a practitioner, mentor or the wider community.
Listen in to this week’s Bright Fierce Hearts podcast for a dive into this theme.

This episode is a conversation between Kylie, Em and their good friend and colleague, Kirstie.
Kirstie May is a local to Bright, she is an inspirational educator and creator. Kirstie studied to become an environmental scientist and has a deep connection to nature and has evolved over the last few years to become a trained Doula and birth worker. She continues to nurture the land as a sustainable gardener and walks with women through her pre and postal natal support work with birthing families. Today we are talking to Kirstie about Fierce Motherhood and all its stages.
This convo goes deep into the reclaiming of women’s power through the process of birth itself, how we can better honour the transition of maiden to mother as a rite of passage and walk with each other through the journey. We also speak to an acknowledgement of the challenges that come with choosing to become a mother. Through these themes we also navigate the different ways that we create and birth as women, not always limited to the physical birth of children.
This was such a juicy conversation. We hope that you enjoy!

In today’s episode, Kylie and Em have a deep conversation around the inquiry “what is ‘women’s work’”? The result is a search for what it means to reclaim the sacred feminine and find balance.
The discussion starts with an explanation of how we might do the ‘work’ of becoming more aware of our femininity, setting the scene with the history of our patriarchal culture and unpacking what feminine and masculine qualities might be (acknowledging that they are fluid and relative).
Reclaiming the feminine is not about tipping the scales towards a situation that might mold women into a power over men relationship. It is about bringing balance and allowing all to acknowledge and celebrate the feminine qualities of receptivity, embracing cycles and sustainability.
This work is also challenging and requires us to look into the deepest layers of ourselves and also to hold space for others. Femininity is also fierce and wild too. There is dark and light on both sides of the polarities.
We talk about practical ideas of how to bring in more of the sacred feminine into your life.
Tune in to hear more about this journey of reclamation and what happens in women’s circles.
Enjoy!

Today’s episode is a bit of a deep dive with Emily into the theme of how we meet obstacles or challenges in our practice and life.
This journey of life has one thing for sure. There will be obstacles to meet on our path.
How do we view challenge in life, how do we challenge ourselves, how do we meet that challenge?
Yoga traditions have many stories, philosophical ideas and tools we can use to better understand all of this and more. In this podcast, Emily explores the Yogic myths and characters (including seeing our journey as non-linear), the ways we can approach our practice, and aspects of energetic anatomy (such as Chakras and Granthis).
These ideas are always traversed in a way that [hopefully] is useful for our lived experience in the world so we hope you at least get a fresh perspective on how obstacles can show up in your life and how you might view them.
Enjoy!

Join Emily for today’s short practice of meditation.
This is a very simple meditation practice to help build focused attention on the breath. By counting each breath as we feel it enter and leave the body we can train the mind to stay present. This class includes instruction and a little guidance and then space to practice the technique yourself.
This is a wonderful tool to learn if you are a beginner to meditation or you find that your mind is especially busy.
Make sure you are in a safe place to practice meditation. Not one for the long drive!

Today’s episode, is a conversation with Amy McDonald where we talk about the power of myth and story telling and how we can work with the ancient stories of the Yogic tradition to support our practice and life!
Amy McDonald is a spiritual business coach and yoga teacher from Australia. She’s also the host of the Abundant Yoga Teachers Podcast. Amy has been teaching yoga since 2009 and has taught freelance classes, corporate yoga, and yoga classes in studios— she’s even taught yoga classes in a men’s prison! She has led workshops and retreats in Australia, Bali, Singapore, Thailand, the UK, Europe, and the USA. And she doesn’t just teach yoga classes, she also teaches yoga teachers how to succeed in their careers. She offers business coaching, Yoga mythology courses, and more. Amy is dedicated to helping yoga teachers grow in their businesses to create abundance.
In this episode Amy talks about how she came to blend her skills as a creative writer, yoga teacher and coach to be mentoring Yoga teachers in small business utilising the philosophy and mythology of Yoga as tools. Amy speaks about the key elements of myth and how we can bring the teachings of these stories into our lives in a practical way.
Even though Amy doesn’t have ‘favourites’ she does share with us some of her most loved stories and gives us some ideas of where to start delving into myth yourself, including exploring the Indian epics, and how to tell these stories in a way that is unique to you while still honouring the culture and tradition they are a part of.
We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!

Join Emily and Kylie for today’s juicy convo about the power of immersive practice. The discussion is mainly around Yoga or Meditation, but can also be applied to anything that you ‘practice’ such as art or music.
When we choose to practice in a dedicated way within a container of time and/or space the results can be nothing short of transformational. We see this on retreats and when we are students or teachers on courses and trainings. Yet you can also see big changes through a personal Sadhana such as a 21 or 30 day practice.
This is all about shifting your habits and experimenting with something. You might not have an expectations about what the results will be and this container allows you to be held, to dive in a swim around!

Today we hear from Kylie as she expands on our Sanctuary (our online yoga studio) theme for the month of July: “Staying The Course”.
As we come to create intentions or goals, it is important that we are able to use the tools of our practice, to build discipline (tapas) and empower our sense of will to stay the course and take actions to ensure we are manifesting our intentions.
As we journey along the road, we will be tempted by the pretty lights or pulled at by the shadowy uprisings, but the more we practice, the more we fortify our sense of determination, strength of will, our resilience and ability to stay on course despite these shadow and light forces trying to pull us off track.
Join Kylie Bertuch for this exploration of what it means to stay the course and see your intentions come into reality.

~ Ancestral Healing: I Heal The Past, Present, And Future ~
By maintaining a relationship with our ancestral wisdom, we open to receive the infinite love that is flowing to us from our millions of ancestors through time. We are filled with their strength, compassion, resilience, and blessings. With these qualities reclaimed, and with ancestral remembrance pulsing through our blood, we know where we come from — and we are better able to know where we are going. Only then can we build a truly peaceful world for future generations

In today's episode of Bright Fierce Hearts your hosts, Kylie and Em, have a beautiful conversation with their friend and teacher Lee Couch.
Lee Couch is a Wellbeing Facilitator and Educator with over 15 years of experience in Health and Wellness. She is an Aboriginal woman from the Gamilaroi Tribe NSW Australia, now living on the traditional lands of Taungurung / Dhudhuroa Country in the Alpine Shire, Victoria. Lee is inspired to allow her culture to be visible again, and has uniquely created a world that welcomes people to connect.
In this first conversation (there will be more chats with Lee later in the year!) they talk about Lee's work with schools, Aboriginal women and the whole community, through movement, meditation, art and connection to land and culture. She talks about the power of immersive retreats and ongoing education programs. Plus we dive into the ongoing work we all need to do in leaning in to the discomfort that is the result of living on this land, Australia and the traumas that have been experienced. The most important take away being that we all need to work together, walk together, on this journey of reconciliation and healing.

In today's episode, Kylie and Emily, your hosts, are in conversation about the concept "Fierce Hearts". Why they come back to this quality in aspects of their business and life. And why it's so important to them that they named their podcast Bright Fierce Hearts.
Love, kindness, inclusivity and compassion are key foundations of Em & Kylie's practice and teaching. Yet, love isn't a mushy, 'walk-all-over-me" thing. We can be fierce with love when we stand up for ourselves or for causes that we believe in.

Emily talks a little about using inquiry, meditation and Tarot to get to your deepest reasons for setting yourself resolutions and goals, and then the power of framing them using positive and present language.
She also clarifies, when it comes to manifesting your dreams, it is important to see the words of your intention as a guidepost for how you share your vision, make wise choices and take empowered actions in your life to stay true to them.

Yoga is an ancient system of philosophy, tools and practices. It has also been morphed into narrow definitions by our perceptions, social media or society in general.
In this episode we chat about some of the myths and barriers that might prevent people from practicing Yoga, and we also delve into the myriad of avenues into a Yoga practice (everything from the physical body, the breath, our voices and our mind) and creating our own unique sadhana (personal practice) that nurtures AND challenges us and supports our deepest needs.

How can we see ourselves as custodians? What is it that lights up our Bright Fierce Hearts and inspires us to protect it or them. It could be our family. It could be a part of us that needs to be nurtured. It could be a cause that we want to fight for.
Join Kylie Bertuch today for a dive into this theme this week on Bright Fierce Hearts.

Join this short practice to creating calming and grounding energy. Starting with a simple counted 3-part breath to expand your lungs and focus your mind (perhaps letting thoughts fade into the background) and integrating with some Ujjayi breath. You'll then finish up with Bramhari pranayama (using sound to extend your exhalation and de-excite the nervous system).
