Most people find it difficult to share their thoughts or feelings with others. It can be especially difficult to share with people closest to you. But those are the people who need to hear from you the most. In this episode, I'll share how our brains get in the way of our ability to communicate, and the simple steps you can take to have hard conversations.

Pro tips: Figure out the best time and place. Try to talk face to face. Be brief and direct. Use "I" statements. Take a break if necessary. And remember they won't necessarily agree. But it sure feels good to get it out.

There are several reasons I've heard for people's hesitance around investing. The big ones are not wanting to "lose" their money, not knowing how to invest, and not knowing what investing choices to make. Your feelings are valid. At the same time, if you want to get into investing, tackling that fear should include educating yourself on investments, starting small, and not putting all your eggs into one basket. I discuss the market, the neurology of fear, and tangible steps to get started. Check out the website for more resources.

As the pandemic continues raging on, I wanted to share what worked for me when my toddler son and I recently quarantined at home for two weeks. What helped most was mentally focusing on getting through half a day at a time since naps still split up our days. Apart from that, deliveries to the house, outdoor space, and a small stash of toys to ration out got us through. Those are all privileges I acknowledge. Remember, this is an emotional and stressful experience. Rely on your supports. That support was invaluable as well.

One way to get your finances on the right track is to pay yourself first. This means that when you get paid, your first priority is to fund your savings and investment accounts. After that, you cover your bills and have some fun. Paying yourself first is a form of self care. No one is going to look out for you better than you can!

About 80% of resolutions fall apart by February. Psychologists advise that you make your resolutions simple, few (one or two), and share them with trusted friends/family. I also recommend making them tangible, e.g. vision board, journal entry. It helps to stick to something you can see.

Continuing to talk about Adulting 2.0, this time we're covering creating an emergency fund. How much should you save for rainy days? Where should you save it? Is it even possible to have 6 months of expenses saved up?

Be an adult. Have a budget. Or at the very least, track your spending for a month so you can cut out what you don't value. Keep more money in your pocket!

My goals are being debt free and achieving financial independence. That forced me to realize I need to budget. But I don't like budgets (said in the whiniest of voices). So instead, I'm doing a few nontraditional budget ideas. I'll describe the 1) zero based budget, 2) cash envelope system, & 3) reverse budget.

If you're completely overwhelmed, forget all that. Just track your spending for the last month and find one area to cut back. Slowly you might come around to the budgeting thing. Or not. And that's okay too.

As we face a new spike in cases and a new round of shutdowns, I wanted to share ideas for a self-care plan to make it through the months ahead.

1) limit news consumption, 2) spend time outdoors, 3) monitor what you're eating and the quality of your sleep, 4) create an employment alternatives list, 5) discuss with friends/family how you can stay connected, 6) turn to projects and hobbies, 7) help others in your community, & 8) seek support and mental health help.

You have the flashy lifestyle, actors, and athletes. And then you have the people who look like everyday folks, but also happen to have $1M+ in assets. I've been looking at the research done on millionaires and checking out interviews with millionaires. They seem to have a few things in common: having real estate and/or investment accounts, living below their means, & being disciplined and goal oriented. In this episode, I'll talk about millionaires in detail and outline how you can get there using real numbers.
