A passage from the Mother’s writings:
“QUESTION: What is exactly the nature of religion? Is it an obstacle in the way of the spiritual life?
THE MOTHER: Religion belongs to the higher mind of humanity. It is the effort of man’s higher mind to approach, as far as lies in its power, something beyond it, something to which humanity gives the name God or Spirit or Truth or Faith or Knowledge or the Infinite, some kind of Absolute, which the human mind cannot reach and yet tries to reach. Religion may be divine in its ultimate origin; in its actual nature it is not divine but human. In truth we should speak rather of religions than of religion; for the religions made by man are many. These different religions, even when they had not the same origin, have most of them been made in the same way. We know how the Christian religion came into existence. It was certainly not Jesus who made what is known as Christianity, but some learned and very clever men put their heads together and built it up into the thing we see. There was nothing divine in the way in which it was formed, and there is nothing divine either in the way in which it functions. And yet the excuse or occasion for the formation was undoubtedly some revelation from what one could call a Divine Being, a Being who came from elsewhere bringing down with him from a higher plane a certain Knowledge and Truth for the earth. He came and suffered for his Truth; but very few understood what he said, few cared to find and hold to the Truth for which he suffered. Buddha retired from the world, sat down in meditation and discovered a way out of earthly suffering and misery, out of all this illness and death and desire and sin and hunger. He saw a Truth which he endeavoured to express and communicate to the disciples and followers who gathered around him. But even before he was dead, his teaching had already begun to be twisted and distorted. It was only after his disappearance that Buddhism as a full-fledged religion reared its head founded upon what the Buddha is supposed to have said and on the supposed significance of these reported sayings. But soon too, because the disciples and the disciples’ disciples could not agree on what the Master had said or what he meant by his utterances, there grew up a host of sects and sub-sects in the body of the parent religion—a Southern Path, a Northern Path, a Far Eastern Path, each of them claiming to be the only, the original, the undefiled doctrine of the Buddha. The same fate overtook the teaching of the Christ; that too came to be made in the same way into a set and organised religion. It is often said that, if Jesus came back, he would not be able to recognise what he taught in the forms that have been imposed on it, and if Buddha were to come back and see what has been made of his teaching, he would immediately run back discouraged to Nirvana! All religions have each the same story to tell. The occasion for its birth is the coming of a great Teacher of the world. He comes and reveals and is the incarnation of a Divine Truth. But men seize upon it, trade upon it, make an almost political organisation out of it. The religion is equipped by them with a government and policy and laws, with its creeds and dogmas, its rules and regulations, its rites and ceremonies, all binding upon its adherents, all absolute and inviolable. Like the State, it too administers rewards to the loyal and assigns punishments for those that revolt or go astray, for the heretic and the renegade.
The first and principal article of these established and formal religions runs always, “Mine is the supreme, the only truth, all others are in falsehood or inferior.” For without this fundamental dogma, established credal religions could not have existed. If you do not believe and proclaim that you alone possess the one or the highest truth, you will not be able to impress people and make them flock to you.
This attitude is natural to the religious mind; but it is just that which makes religion stand in the way of the spiritual life. The articles and dogmas of a religion are mind-made things and, if you cling to them and shut yourself up in a code of life made out for you, you do not know and cannot know the truth of the Spirit that lies beyond all codes and dogmas, wide and large and free. When you stop at a religious creed and tie yourself in it, taking it for the only truth in the world, you stop the advance and widening of your inner soul. But if you look at religion from another angle, it need not always be an obstacle to all men. If you regard it as one of the higher activities of humanity and if you can see in it the aspirations of man without ignoring the imperfection of all man-made things, it may well be a kind of help for you to approach the spiritual life. [CWM 03: 76-78]

In his well-known message given on India’s Independence, Sri Aurobindo mentions five dreams. The first dream was the freedom of India, rather a free and united India. Though India is free, the time has not yet come to realize its Unity. The second dream was the resurgence of Asia. We can see that happening now and most thinkers and analysts speak of the 21st century as the Age of Asia. The next dream of Sri Aurobindo is World Union. The way to bring this unity is also described by him, the pathways; the detailed roadmap has been given. Here we can see Internationalism is growing in all aspects, though there is still a long way to go for achieving true world unity. The next dream was the spiritual gift of India to the world. India’s spiritual riches are spreading to all the corners of the world in different ways and through many channels. The last dream is the ascension from man to superman, the next step in evolution. The Divine has sown these divine dreams in the human soil. Even though it may seem impossible to the human mind at the present moment, these divine dreams are bound to realize today or tomorrow. But it is a unique and great privilege for humanity to be the instrument and catalyst for this change. Let us live and work for it.

In this English talk given in the format of Questions and Answers with ‘Healing triad’ the following questions are answered:
I experienced Mother’s grace early on, have been hardworking and I believe in sincerity and truth. Often I am able to forgive people who are dishonest/lack sincerity, I am nice and encouraging to them since I believe they deserve a chance. However, I get do get angry and hold back that anger, though I never express it on them and this leads to a lot of pains and aches. Am I not forgiving them or am I being too harsh on myself? I don’t know what’s happening.
I witness difficulty in maintaining moderation in eating. It’s either total abstinence or overindulgence. Some ways, I can sustain moderation and make it part of my daily life?
My Ques is related to one of your talks that we heard on Sound health where you suggested to be in a perfect state of consciousness you must Master yourself that nothing affects you at all ..no desire, thoughts, feelings, vibrations, food etc.
How does one get to that state practically and sustain that in our day to day life of our mental, emotional, social, and physical demands?
How do we work on making our consciousness clear and clean on a regular basis to uplift ourselves to the higher ranges which we May experience for a fraction or a little longer at times, but to make it a conscious practice and how do we know or identify that we are rising and that what we experience is truly a higher range of consciousness and not just our imagination?
Can you please provide one powerful intervention to apply for anger management?
In one of your talks you shared a healing process of a finger by Dr Hedge, supported by magnetic fields and micro currencies. Which role will this kind of healing play in the future?
There are some healing devices using magnetic fields, micro currencies and quantum sensors developed in Russia, US and Germany and maybe other places too. Which role does India play in bringing forth this kind of new knowledge and technology?
In Germany Nicola Tesla is widely known. Someone spoke about him being a Vibhuti of Sri Aurobindo. Could you please tell us something about this? Could it be that secular people could find it easier to accept knowledge from a Vibhuti than from the Divine?
Could you please explain the role of our receptivity on behalf of the Siddhi Day? How can we increase our receptivity to the Divine?
It is said that our gut is our second brain and there’s a very direct relationship between our gut health and our psychological states. Often I witness that whenever I experience gustatory issues, I am very disoriented, confused and irritated. Are there ways to try and come back to balanced psychological states at such times? And if yes, would it also improve my gut health?
There is a prayer for the Mother By Dada which you shared in the talks …please can you share it again and also where can we find it?
Where can we find the Poem on Divine Maths for children? The world is 0, God is 1…
The dream that you had shared about the story of the snake and the couple ..how was it associated with your healing of your illness of piles? Sorry, I didn’t understand, just need clarity.

OF what use would be man if he was not made to throw a bridge between That which eternally is, but is not manifested, and that which is manifested; between all the transcendences, all the splendours of the divine life and all the obscure and sorrowful ignorance of the material world? Man is the intermediary between That which has to be and that which is; he is a bridge thrown over the abyss, he is the great X as the cross, the quaternary link. His true abode, the effective seat of his consciousness should be in the intermediate world at the joining point of the four arms of the cross, where all the infinity of the Unknowable comes to take precise form for being projected into the multitudinous manifestation.
This centre is the seat of supreme love and perfect consciousness, of pure and total knowledge. Establish there, O Lord, those who can, who must and who will to serve Thee truly, so that Thy work may be done, the bridge may be definitively established and Thy forces may spread untiringly in the world.

Human beings start their journey with some kind of a working conception of themselves and the world. Those with a little more awakened thoughts also form some conception of the Divine or God or call it by whatever Name. This conception is normally formed by our past evolution that has determined our present trend of nature, our immediate religious and socio-cultural milieu. These are largely belief systems and help or hinder our progress depending upon the stage and need of our evolution. All these conceptions are however a scaffolding while the real truth of the Divine can be found only as we enlarge the field of our spiritual evolution. This talk focuses upon some of these conceptions of the Divine as we encounter in our spiritual journey.

Self-mastery is a long and difficult process. This talk dwells upon some of the fundamental issues in the practice of self-mystery. It is an overview of the subject reflecting upon the need and process of self-mastery. It is followed by question and answers on ‘effort and Grace’, ‘offering the field of nature to the Divine’, ‘becoming an instrument of God’ etc.
After a brief background, certain stories are taken up as illustrative examples of the many layers on which the myth works and the subtle and profound truths it expresses. The stories taken up are from the Devi Purana, Shiv Purana, Srimad Bhagavatam and Ramayana.
Breaking free from both tradition and modernity, the talk brings fresh insights into child development and human nature. A few examples from scriptures and real life draw attention to the real needs of a child. We need to look at a child as a soul in evolution, whose purpose is to bring out the divine possibilities within it.
Surely a time must come when science and spirituality will unite, but for that to happen both have to change much. A talk by Dr Alok Pandey at the Centenary Celebrations of Sri Aurobindo’s Arrival in Pondicherry. Recorded at SACAR in 2010.
Why does one get married? Or, why should one bring a child into this world? Reflecting upon such fundamental questions in a sincere and objective manner helps an adult become more conscious of his or her choices when it comes to entering the householder stage of life. Given the deep significance of parenting on a child’s growth and progress throughout life, this work must be done with a deep awareness and consciously. Only a fully conscious human being can become a conscious parent, so the real work begins by becoming conscious of oneself as an individual, as a human being, as a soul in evolution.
Dr Pandey speaks about intrinsic inner equality between men and women, the place held by women in ancient India, the deeper significance of Hindu marriage traditions, the gradual evolution of man-woman relationship within the context of marriage, and the necessity for an independent path of growth of each partner in the relationship.
Fragment of a talk by Dr Alok Pandey at Bharat Nivas in February 2010 on Evolution of Consciousness.
There are two lines of evolution along which humanity can advance. One is the Asuric line which is primarily towards the capacities of his mental, vital and physical life. It is a life centered around the ego, even though more powerful than our present humanity. Other is the line of the Devas, the godlike climb of man which is a change of human into a diviner, nobler human being with a change in quality. This talk touches upon these two aspects of our existence.
A talk by Dr Alok Pandey at Brahmanaspati Kshetram, a Centre dedicated to The Mother and Sri Aurobindo and located in Edayanchavadi village, Auroville area.
Destiny is a complex affair given the forces at play that weave it. We have to go beyond the over-simplistic notion of good and bad fortune and look at the deeper causes that work from behind. It is in these depths and heights that we can discover the secret levers that can change our fate.
Video and audio recordings of a talk by Dr Alok Pandey at the Beach Office, Sri Aurobindo Society in December 2018.
The talk and a brief interaction are centered around yogic insights into our body, everyday life and how we can live better and healthier.
This talk cum interaction centers around the psychic approach to the Yoga. Questions such as relevance of old forms of worship, love for the Divine, intuition have been discussed. A talk by Dr Alok Pandey.
On the occasion of Sri Aurobindo’s Mahasamadhi day we discuss an aspect of His vast yoga which baffles many. It is this possibility of physical immortality. Though Sri Aurobindo made it abundantly clear that this was to be the crown, the last inevitable step of the Yoga, there are many who emphasize on this aspect, as if the Yoga stands or falls by this. The traditionalists argue against the very possibility. All this is obviously a narrow and limited reading of the tradition where also we find ample evidence of efforts towards physical immortality, albeit incomplete, because the crucial key was missing. This talk focuses upon this hitherto much misunderstood aspect of the Integral yoga.
A talk by Dr Alok Pandey at SACAR on 25th August 2018
Yoga is a concentrated evolution; it is a means of bringing out the highest and deepest possibilities latent in man. Right now our life is hampered and limited in many ways. The human mind and senses as they are presently organized are fundamentally incapable of overcoming these limitations. Yet there is, in man, a quest sublime, to exceed and transcend himself, at arrive at some perfection of his individual and collective existence, to discover his own ultimate Origin which is one with the Source of creation itself. This talk centers around these preliminary considerations and a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of Yoga.
There are several aspects and facets of Sri Aurobindo’s vast and complex personality, namely poet, philosopher, revolutionary, journalist, visionary, seer, yogi. But what is the essential core of his being, the central lever of his immense personality so to say? On one side we see him as an embodiment of tyaga (renunciation) and tapasya (concentrated spiritual endeavour). On the other hand we see his tremendous compassion for earth and humanity.

This talk is based on a passage from Savitri pp. 69 – 73 (B1C4), where Sri Aurobindo describes the soul as a sailor voyaging through Time towards Eternity. The steps and stages of the journey are beautifully marked through significant images and the eventual goal of the soul’s tremendous adventure.
The first talk from a 9-part series “The Goal of the Human Quest” with Dr Alok Pandey, recorded in Sep 2018 at the Sri Aurobindo Society, Pondicherry.
This talk is about the various aims of human life through which the soul moves along its evolutionary journey. This aim is not so much of a mental choice as of a growing unfolding of the Divine Script in man.
Sri Aurobindo’s poem ‘Bride of the Fire” is very much Vedic in essence as well as in its occult and spiritual significance. The used images belong to the Vedic imagery, and the power of Fire (referred to here as the bride of Fire) is being invoked by the Seer-poet to uplift the entire being in its ascension towards the Divine Purity and Truth-Light and Delight.
There has never been any age of mankind when yoga was withheld from man. In every age of mankind there have been great beings, luminous Masters who have shown the Path towards the Divine. This time however there is something new. It is the Divine coming as the Mother that changes the approach and forges a new bond between the seeker and the Master.
A question is often asked about the initiation in this yoga. Savitri in fact starts with this process. It opens with an initiation of the earth and humanity into the yoga of creation. Indeed reading Savitri itself may serve as an initiation for the Path.
Sri Aurobindo has brought and implanted upon earth a new aspiration, the aspiration for terrestrial perfection, for an integral fulfillment of life. Savitri serves as an intermediary to awaken and help this aspiration to grow in man.
Savitri, the mantra of transformation is not only a vision but also an action. Sri Aurobindo has revealed here all that has to be known of our past, our present and the future of the human race with earth as the center-stage of the epic drama of creation. But it is also an action, since this revelation carries with it the power of the mantra that uplifts us nearer to those heights from where the vision has descended.

Any sincere practitioner of yoga knows that the journey of yoga is not a bed of roses. An ancient scripture speaks of it as ‘the razor’s edge’. True, the Grace is there as also many beautiful experiences on the way. But each stage and sometimes each step forward is marked by challenges thrown by the great ‘Adversary’ whose work it seems is to test the aspirant to a higher life. Therefore arises the need for balance and moderation, humility and vigilance, courage and sincerity, faith and endurance as one advances on the way.
Many are the forms these forces adverse and hostile to the yoga can take, some extremely deceptive in nature. Yet there are ways to detect them and keep them at arm’s length; to escape their snare and, if caught in their diabolic web, means to address the crisis.
There is a tendency to overlook this aspect of yoga or even deny their existence. While it is true that they need not be given more importance than it is due but their effect and the dangers they can create is very real. It is therefore good is one is well equipped to deal with them when the situation so arises. The present talk will be centered around this subject.

How can one deal with psychological difficulties on the spiritual path in the light of Mother and Sri Aurobindo’s teachings?
The spiritual energy surrounding Auroville is tremendous. What are its effects on our different bodies: mental, vital and physical? What are the effects of that force of revelation and transformation on each of us?
Loneliness, misunderstanding, confusion, relationship problems, are just some of the challenges a seeker faces on the spiritual path. Meanwhile, the ego could become inflated from spiritual experiences and develop distortions of perceptions.
A family may reach Auroville together and find the variation in levels of progress and knowledge between individuals leads to conflicts within the family. This could be between parents or between parents and children.
Finally, what are these subtle forces that we don’t even notice or that we feel sometimes within us that could lead us in a particular direction? Are we always protected or is there danger on the spiritual path?

A talk at the annual All USA Meeting (AUM), held on 20–24 July 2001 in Redwood City, California
From the account by August Timmermans in “Collaboration (2001)”:
“Alok Pandey, the third speaker who spoke on “Evolution,” is such a colourful person. For him, the yoga means union with the Mother and her force. It is surrender. Life is lifted up by her force and inspiration, and becomes transformed. His speech was colourful and contained a great sense of freedom in expression while being infused with a healthy sense of humour. Off-lecture, he is as fascinating, being true to his own words. As is typical for Indians, speaking without reading from a paper came naturally to him.”

A special session at the Savitri Readers’ Foundation, Bhubaneswar, in April 2017 (Part 2)
A talk by Alok Pandey on the significance of 24th April, celebrated in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram as Darshan Day. Recorded in Pondicherry in 2017.
The 24th of April occupies a special place in the Ashram History. It was the day when the Mother returned back to Pondicherry for good; the day of Her final arrival which marked a new phase of Her Work with Sri Aurobindo for Earth and man. Historically also the 24th April is the day when queen Hatshepsut (a previous incarnation of the Mother) had assumed powers in Egypt leading to revolutionary changes. It is also the day when the Greeks enter Troy leading to its downfall. Whether the Mother’s final coming is connected in any way with these events or not but it marked a definitive change in the rhythm and scope of the Ashram life. The Mother has noted that it ‘…was the tangible sign of the sure Victory over the adverse forces.’
This day is also one of the four Darshan days at the Ashram. Today we share some thoughts on some aspects of the Darshan day with the background of the Mother’s final arrival to Pondicherry.

Of all the powers that have gone into creation, the most powerful admittedly is Love. Without Love, creation could not be, without Love creation could not be pulled out of its darkness. But what really is Love, this most powerful lever that moves all things? It is the Mystery of mysteries, the Great Secret. The Mother reminds us in Her conversations with a disciple (May 16, 1960):
‘That is the great Secret, that which is behind the Existent and the Non-Existent, the Personal and the Impersonal – Love. Not a love between two things, two beings … A love containing everything….And what is wonderful is that at each moment the Grace, the Joy, the Light, the Love never cease pouring down in the very midst of all this – despite the ego, despite the shame, despite the unworthiness.’
Though there is only one Love, it takes different forms in different vessels just as the pure crystalline water from its pristine source mixes with mud in the container and becomes muddy. In human beings love takes an appropriate human form. Because of the very nature of our humanity it thereby gets tainted with ego and desires, lust and vanity. Yet human beings are not fixed like other species. We can and do consciously evolve. The force or power of Love can be upgraded, refined and purified, uplifted and restored to its diviner heights. This is true of all divine forces that labour and suffer here upon Earth. Of course this is not an easy task since it is so much mixed in the human vessel with not only animal movements but sometimes even given dark and vicious distortions by the ‘Inconscient’ that constantly exerts a downward pull on man. In this talk we share some reflections on human love and its evolutionary possibilities especially in the context and backdrop of Integral Yoga.
As 2017 US Integral Yoga Retreat is fast approaching, we are sharing a concluding talk of the 2016 Retreat by Alok Pandey (below).
We know that yoga is not a set of physical exercises, the meaning of the word yoga is a union, but union with what or whom? What are the way and process in the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother? How can we build our relations with Them? These are the major questions each of us has to find an answer to follow the Pathway to the Future They have prepared.
Questions and Answers Session with Alok Pandey
Why do we die and what’s wrong with this question? How we do the Yoga of Cellular Transformation and what is incorrect with this question also? How to keep body fit for the physical transformation? Spiritual evolution can be very disorienting. We live our lives according to certain set patterns, ideas, beliefs, which are appropriate to the humans. But as we enter into higher levels, experience touch of the limitless vast, these ideas and patterns must fall away…
A talk at the 2016 Integral Yoga Retreat in Greenville, SC.
The age of religions is over. When a great Master comes and releases certain teachings, they have to be expressed in a body of words, which we understand in a human way, with a very inadequate means of receiving the state in which there truths were expressed. When a great truth is spoken to us – Gita, Ramayana, Bible – there are two ways we can approach it. We can keep a holy book on the altar, routinely read it as a scripture, pick up a few things, select some temporal elements, connected to time and space context when this truth was revealed, and treat them as eternal truth, observe some rules and rites, and form a religion. On other side, every great teaching has an eternal element, the Sanatan Satya, but to receive it we have to go beyond the customs and external things in which it is trapped, beyond the written words, which are inadequate to fully capture the great truth…

This world is not what it appears to be. It is a distorted appearance of a reality, and we are playing with this distorted appearance. Because we don’t perceive it rightly, therefore our responses are also not right responses. And here we use “right” not in the sense of a morally right and wrong, but from a higher standpoint. Moral framework we use to navigate through the appearances …

Integral Yoga is a many-sided evolutionary journey towards the Divine. It is not just about liberation of the soul to a higher Divine status but most importantly a liberation and transformation of the field of Nature through which the soul moves and experiences so as to eventually embody a higher Supernature. It is impossible to describe this wide movement of yoga and hence only a few fundamental aspects are being presented here in this talk.
