This episode is for you if you are:
I had the most encouraging conversation with Arianna on this week’s episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur, and I am so happy to share these themes and messages with each of you! Arianna and I weave together themes of rest and transition, focusing on how each of us can benefit from taking a break and how we can make these rest times most effective. Arianna speaks in depth about her recent sabbatical, including why she took the amount of time that she did, how she prepared for her time away, and what she did to make her transition back to work as smooth as possible. Rest and recalibration are so important for therapists in private practice, and I think shedding more light on how we can all take more effective breaks from our work is essential. I hope you find this episode as encouraging as I did and that it helps you create space and intention for your own rest period or sabbatical!

I always love chatting with Maelisa, and found this conversation fruitful in so many ways! On this week’s episode of the Flourishing Therapreneur, Maelisa and I are diving headfirst into a touchy topic for many therapists: taking notes. Documentation can be such a pressure point and stressor for therapists in private practice, and Maelisa is here to help us understand why it can be stressful, reasons therapists get behind on documentation, as well as ways to improve your process to stay on top of documentation going forward. We dig into negative connotations we are taught about note-taking in private practice, and forge ahead with tangible steps to work smarter, not harder, to make documentation more manageable. If notes have been a point of stress for you, or if you are simply looking to improve your documentation process, I know you will gain something from this episode!

Lindsay and I had a fruitful conversation on this week’s episode chatting all about embracing money and the most common money mistakes therapists are making in private practice. We dove into the relationship many therapists have with money, and why money can feel like a taboo topic for therapists. Lindsay jumps into new narratives around money and how the traditional narratives about being a “good” therapist are outdated and unsuccessful. Learn how to run a sustainable private therapy practice by avoiding the three most common money mistakes, and how making changes in your business will not only help you survive but thrive! Money can feel like a very sensitive topic to breach for therapists, so listen to this episode if you are interested in updating your money beliefs and learning more about how to be financially successful in your therapy practice.

I had an absolute blast sitting down with Pauline to dig into pregnancy and maternity leave as therapists in private practice. If you have been in this situation, currently are planning for maternity leave, or plan to someday take maternity leave from your private practice, you probably know that there are not a lot of resources or guidance out there. I have some good news: there is a lot of helpful information in this episode! Pauline and I both share how we prepared for and returned from maternity leave with our first children, as well as what we are planning and doing differently during our second pregnancies. We chat extensively about taking care of yourself during your pregnancy to help your postpartum transition go smoother in your private practice, and also provide suggestions for plans you can make now to create passive income during your maternity leave. We as therapists AND mothers need to take care of ourselves just as we have been trained to take care of our clients, and I know this valuable conversation with Pauline will not stop here!

Gosh, I learned SO much from this week’s conversation with Austin Lampson on everything you need to know about purchasing a home in private practice and as a self-employed business owner! Austin and I had a vibrant discussion breaking down the four building blocks of a loan, including income, assets, credit, and property, and she outlines how each one is important for us as therapists to understand. We break down what it means to separate business from personal debt, along with what benefits you can tap into when it comes to income taxes as a self-employed business owner. Austin really helped me understand some of the financial and technical jargon that we often are not taught in our graduate programs, including what to take advantage of and which pieces to look out for. I am so excited to share this information with you and hope you find this conversation as valuable as I did!

We kept it real when discussing the time, energy, and real work that starting a group takes, as well as the many benefits that come with groups once they are up and running! Destiny and I both dive into our niche areas, including why we chose these populations and how we prepared and trained to have a niche client base. In this episode, Kristie outlines the basics of SEO strategy, including keywords and high-quality content, and walks us through how to know if SEO is a good fit for you right now. We discuss the work involved in launching SEO in your business, as well as how SEO is a strategy for therapists ready to invest in the future. Of course, we also discuss the barriers to SEO, particularly the fear that many therapists have been taught in graduate school and by mentors that can hinder SEO success. In this week’s episode, I am diving into steps I am taking to expand my solo practice to a group practice and taking on associates as a supervisor in private practice. I know firsthand how overwhelming this process can feel when you are just starting to explore it, so I want to help each of you feel more comfortable and confident if you are considering supervising associates in your private practice. In this episode, I break down five manageable steps to help you get organized, figure out what your goals are in this process, and determine the direction you want your therapy practice to go. I had so much fun sitting down with Ashley to talk about money mindsets and how they impact our work as therapists in private practice. We took a deep dive into the four main scripts around money: Money Avoidant (spoiler: most mental health professionals fall under this category!), Money Vigilant, Money Status, and Money Worship, including what each of them look like and how they can show up in our lives. We took a step back to look at where we may have learned these scripts, as well as how grad school has impacted our thoughts about money and our work helping others. Finances feels like a taboo topic for many people, so Ashley and I are uncovering YOUR money story to help you focus more on financial self-care and balance!

We also discussed how you can use the skills and experiences you already have to make your private therapy practice a success, because you’re not starting from scratch making this switch! Kelley brings us all back down to earth by reminding us that everything in private practice can be figured out one step at a time, and noting that we already have done a lot of the hard work in agency practice that will make private practice feel even more enjoyable. We addressed how therapists already possess some of the most important marketing tools out there: relationships, rapport, and reciprocity. As therapists, we are comfortable connecting with others, so it only makes sense we would use these existing skills to grow our private practices by marketing with other providers. Nicole highlights the importance of a two-way street with this approach, as well as making yourself visible and memorable in order for these methods to be successful. Reflecting and challenging our own thoughts and feelings around money will help each of us realize how possible it is to raise rates AND still be successful! We are shattering the guilt and shame that often comes with wanting money and happiness in our careers, and forging ahead to create a business (and mindset!) filled with abundance!

On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur we are joined by Alyssa Callahan, MS, RDN with Nourished with Kindness. You might be wondering — why is a dietician on today’s podcast? One of the core beliefs for The Flourishing Therapreneur is learning from other business owners + professionals — if we only focus on what works for therapists, it’s often a disadvantage because as therapists we are still evolving, growing and learning. To put it bluntly — as business owners there’s a lot we don’t know. By leaning into other professionals paralells, practices and business structures we can continue to flourish and expand our offerings.
