Hello everyone, welcome to Afritunes week 31.
For a while now, I have been enjoying singing acapella because I feel very comfortable with just my voice, this started when my laptop stopped working so I had no choice but right now, I can’t even imagine anything else.
Anyways, For this week I decided to sing an acapella version of a song titled “African queen” by 2face, I am sure every Nigerian grew up to this iconic song and I just wanted to be some sort of reminder of maybe your childhood.
Anytime I hear this song, I usually smile and sing along because of how beautiful it is; I feel like it’s one of those song that will never not be nice to my ears.
Now, today I decided to sing just the first verse, these days I prefer singing verses because it is shorter and people can watch them; I feel if it’s longer most people wouldn’t.

The theme of this week is creativity and freestyle and for this week I decided to try out something totally different and do a rap.
You see, I have never tried rapping before for people, but this week I didn’t want to do the usual singing, so I told myself to give it a try.
The song I chose was “moment for life by Nicki Minaj” and I chose it because it is one of my favorite rap/hiphop songs, I feel like it is an iconic song for this artist and it was one song that made me like her.

This month of june has been a very challenging month to me and my fmaily, from me falling sick and being rushed to the hospital, to my mother also falling sick also, but there is one thing that I am grateful for and that is God's mercy and grace upon my life and my family.
As someone who is spiritual, I can't live life without acknowledging the presence of God and this month has made it very clear that he loves me.
For this week's afritunes, I didn't exactly know what I wanted to sing and I was overthinking and trying different songs before this song came to my heart.
I remember the first time I heard this song, it was sang at a musical concert in the carpenter's church by an artist named "modele" and I immediately fell inlove with it.
Giving thanks to the lord is something we should never be tired of and I am glad I could share this song with the title "my mouth e no go tire" by the carpenter's church.
I tried to find an instrumental for this song, but since I couldnt, I decided to go acapella.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the first musical event I attended and how awful it was, in that post I spoke about how much I hated it, and due to that, I didn’t plan on going to any other.
After writing about it, I had a bunch of comments telling me not to give up and to try again with multiple tips on how to make it better, I was even told that maybe it was bad because the event wasn’t exactly solely for music.
Now, I won’t lie, I didn’t plan on attending anything again, at least not anytime soon because first, I hated leaving my house, and secondly, that event put me off but, as fate may have it, something came knocking.
Last year, I met someone who was an artist and after a while, we became friends, he often invited me to his events to come watch him play or read poetry but, I never did.
Around last week, we had a conversation about my social life and before I realized it, I was being invited and dragged to a musical event in another state.
Even though the state was a few hours away, I didn’t want to go and I tried every excuse in the book which didn’t work because he had heard them before so, I was made to go.
The event named “the eclipse” was a live musical event with poetry also, it was organized by an individual who promotes poetry in southern Nigeria, and what he did was gather small artists from the south.
This event was held in the platinum club in hotel presidential Portharcourt and the venue was not only perfect for it but for me due to how secluded it was.
Everything about this event screamed intimate and calm which made me enjoy it more because I didn’t have to deal with so many people.
Another perk about this event was how talented the artist and poets were and you could tell that they put their all into it which made it more enjoyable.
After a while of enjoying everything, my friend came up to play and I was so proud of him, it was the first time seeing him live and I couldn’t help but smile.
At the end of the day, I was so glad that I went and I am looking forward to attending more of these types of events.
This event made me realize how much I enjoy intimate events like this and I will surely be keeping my eyes open to more.

Welcome everyone to Pukumundo week 17, the theme of this week is the singing voice and I will be singing a dance rock song by pink titled “raise your glass”.
I wasn’t going to participate this week because I fell sick a few days ago but, I really love this song and I was looking forward to singing it this week.
I wouldn’t say I did justice to it as I wanted to but, in the state I am, I pretty much tried my best.
ABOUT THE SONG Raise your glass is a song by an American artist called pink, she released the song in 2010 and it was such a big hit.
I remember listening to this song when it came out and I literally raved about it, for some reason, this song always made me want to attend a part, and even though, I never attended anyone, it always made me feel very high whenever I played it.

Tradition is a way of life or at least the way most people live and for this week's theme “local traditions”, I knew that I wanted to sing something Nigerian.
I considered singing a language song but there are over 525 local languages in Nigeria, so that was a bit complicated and since I don’t speak my language which is Ijaw, I decided to go for a song that had pidgin English which is more or less a unified language here.
Growing up, I never really spoke pidgin English, my father always wanted me to speak proper English but, as I got older, I got to learn and even though I am not good at it, I think I tried here.
I decided to sing a song by Simi who is a Nigerian and the song is titled love don’t care.
The reason I chose this song is because even though the song doesn’t speak on our traditions deeply, it kind of brings insight into what most Nigerians face when they fall in love or want to get married.
A lot of Nigerian parents are very involved in their children’s lives including their love lives and most times, they have preferences on where they want their children to marry from or not, what profession, etc. and when their children protest, you get the line “you know that I know better”.
This song talks about a girl who receives a call from her mother asking her what she is doing with an “omo Igbo' and why she couldn’t find someone from Yoruba instead of Igbo; both are tribes in Nigeria.
She also receives a call again from her father asking her why she was with a teacher when there are bankers and her reply is “love doesn’t care about all those things”.
This song is so special to me and I relate to the fact that love doesn’t care about race, tribe, skin colour, or all that; love is love.
Anyways, for this song, I teamed up with my friend Winnie and I hope you enjoy watching this as much as we enjoyed singing, thank you.

La tradición es una forma de vida o al menos la forma en que la mayoría de la gente vive y para el tema de esta semana "tradiciones locales", sabía que quería cantar algo nigeriano.
Consideré la posibilidad de cantar una canción en un idioma, pero en Nigeria hay más de 525 lenguas locales, así que era un poco complicado y, como no hablo mi idioma, que es el Ijaw, me decidí por una canción en inglés pidgin, que es más o menos un idioma unificado aquí.
Cuando crecí, nunca hablé realmente el inglés pidgin, mi padre siempre quiso que hablara un inglés correcto pero, a medida que crecía, fui aprendiendo y aunque no soy bueno en ello, creo que lo intenté aquí.
Decidí cantar una canción de Simi, que es nigeriana, y la canción se titula love don't care.
La razón por la que elegí esta canción es porque, aunque la canción no habla en profundidad de nuestras tradiciones, en cierto modo aporta una visión de lo que la mayoría de los nigerianos afrontan cuando se enamoran o quieren casarse.
Muchos padres nigerianos se implican mucho en la vida de sus hijos, incluida su vida amorosa, y la mayoría de las veces tienen preferencias sobre de dónde quieren que se casen sus hijos o no, qué profesión, etc., y cuando sus hijos protestan, se oye la frase "sabes que yo sé más".
Esta canción habla de una chica que recibe una llamada de su madre preguntándole qué hace con un "omo Igbo" y por qué no pudo encontrar a alguien de Yoruba en lugar de Igbo; ambas son tribus en Nigeria.
También recibe otra llamada de su padre preguntándole por qué estaba con un profesor cuando hay banqueros y su respuesta es "al amor no le importan todas esas cosas".
Esta canción es muy especial para mí y me identifico con el hecho de que al amor no le importa la raza, la tribu, el color de la piel o todo eso; el amor es amor.
De todos modos, para esta canción, me asocié con mi amiga Winnie y espero que disfruten viendo esto tanto como nosotros disfrutamos cantando, gracias.

Welcome everyone to Pukumundo week 16, the theme of this week is the singing voice and I will be singing an alternative rock song by the all American rejects titled “it ends tonight”.
The first time I heard this song was in one of my favorite series; one tree hill and I immediately fell in love with the song but, I didn’t download it until I heard it again in another series; Smallville.
One thing that made me love this song was the lyrics of it and even though I didn’t understand the meaning of it till I went through a breakup, this song has always been something special to me.
WHAT IS THE SONG ABOUT? The song talks about a generic relationship that comes to an end, and certain lines break it down to talk about how the partner didn’t realize that the other party was hurt or neglected until it was too late.

As a Nigerian living in Nigeria, there is one thing most of us have in common and that is the fear of the unknown, most days we wake up expecting or hearing bad news.
It has gotten to a point where bad news is inevitable and some might consider it normal which isn’t a good thing but, that is the life here.
I remember growing up and asking myself multiple times why I wasn’t born somewhere else; crazy enough I and my siblings have games where we imagine life outside Nigeria.
Personally, I didn’t realize how bad security and things, in general, were in Nigeria until 2020 when there was a protest against police brutality.
During this protest, I went out with my friends trying to fight for our rights but, the protest ended when youths were shot down by the military in another state; to date, it is denied that there was a shooting even though we watched it on Instagram live.
A few weeks ago, there was also a train attack in which the lives of many were lost and the government still denies it ever happened.
Sadly, these are the circumstances that we have to live in and most people can’t even afford to leave even if they wanted to.
This song by @Ebingo is such a powerful one and it relates to me personally, especially since this is the life I live.
Every day I pray that I get to leave this little town before it all falls now and hopefully I do soon.

Se ha llegado a un punto en el que las malas noticias son inevitables y algunos las consideran normales, lo que no es bueno, pero así es la vida aquí. Recuerdo que cuando crecía me preguntaba muchas veces por qué no había nacido en otro lugar; es una locura que mis hermanos y yo juguemos a imaginarnos la vida fuera de Nigeria. Personalmente, no me di cuenta de lo mal que estaban la seguridad y las cosas, en general, en Nigeria hasta 2020, cuando hubo una protesta contra la brutalidad policial. Durante esta protesta, salí con mis amigos tratando de luchar por nuestros derechos pero, la protesta terminó cuando los jóvenes fueron abatidos por los militares en otro estado; hasta la fecha, se niega que haya habido un tiroteo aunque lo vimos en Instagram en directo. Hace unas semanas, también hubo un ataque al tren en el que se perdieron las vidas de muchas personas y el gobierno sigue negando que haya ocurrido. Tristemente, estas son las circunstancias en las que tenemos que vivir y la mayoría de la gente no puede ni siquiera permitirse el lujo de salir aunque quiera. Whitney Houston was an amazing artist and this song is such a powerful song which I have always felt a deep connection with.
The song “I look to you” shares a message about finding a higher power after going through adversely and while, for some, it might be spiritual, for others, this can be found through music.

Birthdays are said to be a day of celebration but, for me, most birthdays are days to reflect on where I’ve been, and where I am heading.
A year ago on my birthday, I was so miserable; it wasn’t anything I could understand, just the usual depression and anxiety, and on that day, I kept asking myself why I couldn’t just be happy.
I could remember spending a lot of time in the bathroom because I was crying a lot and I didn’t want my family to worry because well, I would rather struggle alone.
Now looking back, I can’t imagine how things got that crazy and I am not here to say they are better but, they aren’t the same, sounds complicated right?
Well, most days it is, I have struggled a lot this past year and I am grateful that I am here today which might not have been possible if I didn’t keep fighting even when every part of me wanted to give up.
I made a promise to myself last year that I will keep smiling and dancing through 23 and it’s silly how many times I danced and cried immediately after.
I wouldn’t say I am the strongest person instead I would consider myself the opposite so, it is crazy that I am here today.
THANKFUL FOR HIVE I will also say that one reason that I am here today is because of hive, I could remember deciding to come back to hive because I needed an outlet to share my thoughts; at that time I had a lot of them.
I came back not expecting much but, I received so much support from a lot of people to a point that when I was low, I would even get messages on discord.
I am not one to tag people but my mother always says “give thanks to whom thanks are needed” and so, I need to give thanks to a few people.
First to @dreemsteem, @samsmith1971 and @tengolotodo; being part of the dreemers and meeting you guys has been amazing and I am so thankful for that.

Welcome everyone to pukumundo week 14, the theme of this week is the singing voice and I will be singing a pop rock song by the artist Miley Cyrus titled 7 things.
THE IDEA BEHIND THE SONG CHOICE I remember when I first heard this song, it was after Miley Cyrus had left Disney and I was so intrigued by the song because Miley was one of my favorite artist at the time and we weren’t used to her singing this kind of music as a country artist which she started as.
Even though at the time I wasn’t as opened to different types of music, I enjoyed the song and found myself screaming the chorus every time I heard it; the wrong words if I may add.
This song, even though it was a breakup song was more of a new beginning for Miley as artist and not just some Disney child star and I think it was an amazing breakout.
I chose this song because I have always loved it and it kind of brought back memories of when I was younger.
THE RECORDING PROCESS Even though I have known this song for almost 10 years, well I didn’t realize that I didn’t know the lyrics.
Due to this, I had to wake up early in the morning of this shoot and learn the song over and over till I could get it in my head.
I enjoyed the process even though it made my mother mad because I kept screaming the lyrics out quite early but, in the end, it all worked out.

Bienvenidos todos a la semana 14 de pukumundo, el tema de esta semana es la voz cantante y voy a cantar una canción de pop rock de la artista Miley Cyrus titulada 7 things. LA IDEA DETRÁS DE LA ELECCIÓN DE LA CANCIÓN Recuerdo que cuando escuché esta canción por primera vez, fue después de que Miley Cyrus dejara Disney y me intrigó mucho la canción porque Miley era una de mis artistas favoritas en ese momento y no estábamos acostumbrados a que cantara este tipo de música como artista country, que es como empezó.
Aunque en aquel momento no estaba tan abierta a otros tipos de música, disfruté de la canción y me encontré gritando el estribillo cada vez que lo escuchaba; las palabras equivocadas, si se me permite añadir.
Esta canción, a pesar de ser una canción de ruptura, fue más bien un nuevo comienzo para Miley como artista y no sólo una estrella infantil de Disney, y creo que fue una ruptura increíble.
Elegí esta canción porque siempre me ha gustado y me trajo recuerdos de cuando era más jjove.
EL PROCESO DE GRABACIÓN Aunque conozco esta canción desde hace casi 10 años, no me había dado cuenta de que no me sabía la letra.
Por ello, tuve que levantarme temprano en la mañana de este rodaje y aprenderme la canción una y otra vez hasta que pude meterla en mi cabeza.
Disfruté del proceso, aunque hizo enfadar a mi madre porque no paraba de gritar la letra antes de tiempo, pero, al final, todo salió bien.

When I heard about the theme of this week’s paper kite, I immediately related it to flying, I guess most people would because when you think kites, you think flight, and a kite that doesn’t fly is said to be broken.
I thought about different songs to sing, but none stood out to me emotionally, especially at this point in my life; I’ve been going through a lot of changes, so I needed something to show that.
I truly was about to give up but, yesterday I was listening to music on my phone and I came across the song “defying gravity” by the glee cast and it was perfect for the stage I am in.
For a paper kite to fly, it has to defy the law of gravity which might sound easy, but it isn’t because the earth is created in a way that we cannot escape the pull of gravity, and just like the kite, as humans, for us to fly, we have to also defy gravity.
It is crazy because most times, we don’t even realize that we are held down; someone of us don’t know that we can even fly and some are us are holding on to things that aren’t ours keeping us down.
I guess the only way we can fly is by trusting ourselves, letting go, and leaping off because even though it might not work, at least we tried.
This song is so dear to me and the words truly describe my emotions to the tee and maybe, one day, I’ll be like the paper kite; flying and defying gravity.

Un pájaro enjaulado no puede volar, no puede desafiar la gravedad, pero no hay nada peor que un pájaro que puede volar pero no se da cuenta.- Khaleesii Cuando me enteré del tema de la cometa de papel de esta semana, lo relacioné inmediatamente con volar, supongo que la mayoría de la gente lo haría porque cuando piensas en cometas, piensas en volar, y una cometa que no vuela se dice que está rota.
Pensé en diferentes canciones para cantar, pero ninguna me llamaba la atención emocionalmente, sobre todo en este momento de mi vida; he estado pasando por muchos cambios, así que necesitaba algo que lo mostrara.
Realmente estaba a punto de rendirme pero, ayer estaba escuchando música en mi teléfono y me encontré con la canción "defying gravity" del elenco de Glee y era perfecta para la etapa en la que me encuentro.
Para que una cometa de papel vuele, tiene que desafiar la ley de la gravedad, lo cual puede parecer fácil, pero no lo es porque la tierra está creada de tal manera que no podemos escapar de la atracción de la gravedad, y al igual que la cometa, como humanos, para que podamos volar, también tenemos que desafiar la gravedad.
Es una locura porque la mayoría de las veces ni siquiera nos damos cuenta de que estamos sujetos; algunos no saben que pueden volar y otros se aferran a cosas que no son suyas para mantenernos abajo.
Supongo que la única manera de volar es confiando en nosotros mismos, dejándonos llevar y saltando porque, aunque no funcione, al menos lo hemos intentado.
Esta canción es muy querida para mí y las palabras describen realmente mis emociones al pie de la letra y quizás, un día, seré como la cometa de papel; volando y desafiando la gravedad.

Hello everyone, welcome to PukuMundo week 13, the theme of this week is the singing voice, and for this week, I chose to sing a song titled radioactive by imagine dragons.
Imagine Dragons is an American rock band that originated in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2009, they were originally tagged as an alternative rock band but now, they are a mixture of rock, pop, and electronic music.
This band was formed when the vocalist Dan Reynold met drummer Andre Tolman at the University of Brigham Young when they were students in 2008 and after recruiting three other members, they decided to form a band.
The band's name is said to be an anagram and only members of the band know the official meaning of each word, and even though as a band they started of as five members, currently, they are three and the current members of the band are Dan Reynolds Wayne, Sermon Ben McKee, and Daniel Platzman.
Imagine Dragons as a band has had multiple hits which includes Radioactive which is a song written by the band with their producer Alex, this song was written for their Night visions album and it was released in October of 2012.
I decided to sing this song because I have always loved the song, the song according to the band speaks about dealing with depression and anxiety, and as someone who has dealt with both, it makes me appreciate this song way more.

Falling in love comes with so many emotions; there is a need to share a part of yourself with someone else as humans because we weren’t created to be alone or so they say, and most of the time, it feels totally worth it, love is life as they say, right?.
Oftentimes, love begets a relationship, and a relationship begets planning of a future together but, what happens when things get rough and it isn’t as rosy as it started.

The line “don’t forget me, I beg” is so deep to me because of how vulnerable it feels, and I know how many times I have wanted to scream those words to someone.

Anyways, for the theme of this week “ the singing voice”, I will be covering a song titled Don't Stop Believin' by journey, the reason I chose this song is because of how much I love it and how inspiring it has been to me.
Journey is an American rock band that originated in San Francisco in the year 1973 by former members of Santana, Steve miller band, and furious Bandersnatch, over the years, they have had various members but, the only constant person has been the guitarist “Neal Schon”.
Journey had countless hits but, one of their biggest commercial hit is the song Don’t stop believin’ which was released in 1981, and one of the writers of the song “Jon Cain” when asked about the song said he wrote it because of a conversation he had with his father when he was in a bad phase, in his words, his father told him to not give up because his biggest breakthrough was just around the corner.
This shows how motivating this song is because it speaks so much about the trials of life and how we should keep pushing regardless of everything that life throws at us.

To be brave means to endure or face unpleasant circumstances without fear, it is being strong and courageous no matter what people think, how you look, or what is said.
Being brave is listening to that small voice in your heart telling you yes when the world might be screaming no, and even in the worse circumstances, being brave is speaking your truth and sharing yourself.
For the longest time, I wouldn’t really have considered myself brave, to be honest, most days, I hideaway scared of what people might think or say, I walk with my head down in hope that I am not seen and I try to dim my light even when I was made to shine.
I guess recently, I have been trying to be braver through my art, through music, and even on days when I feel cowardly, I know that I can sing and it will give me strength; strength to be brave.
Well, this week's theme for the hive open mic is titled “brave mind” and I decided to sing a song that has resonated with me since the first time I heard it.
This is me by Keala Settle is such a powerful song, with a message that I feel like everyone should listen to, the words “I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I meant to be” shows that regardless of what life throws at us, how it hits us, and how it hurts us, we can still be brave and we can still do what we were created to do.
Just because we are different and the world derides us doesn’t mean we should let it, they can fire rounds of bullets at our skin but we don’t have to fear or let shame turn us back, we can keep pushing and thriving.
Challenging myself to be brave. It’s easy to speak on bravery or facing fears but, it is another thing to actually face your fears and in line with the week's theme, I have decided to face some music fears; one, which is singing and creating a video in front of people and the other, which is creating a video in one take.
I remember having a conversation with @mipiano weeks back where we discussed how many takes we usually did when recording a video and after it, I was pretty curious if I could one day do it all in one take.
After recording this video, I was tempted to give up and re-record because all I saw were mistakes but I decided to share it as it is.
It might not be something too crazy but I guess it is a step for me to be braver.

Ser valiente significa soportar o afrontar circunstancias desagradables sin miedo, es ser fuerte y valiente sin importar lo que piense la gente, tu aspecto o lo que se diga.
Ser valiente es escuchar esa pequeña voz en tu corazón que te dice que sí cuando el mundo podría gritar que no, e incluso en las peores circunstancias, ser valiente es decir tu verdad y compartirte.
Durante mucho tiempo, no me he considerado valiente, para ser honesta, la mayoría de los días, me escondo con miedo a lo que la gente pueda pensar o decir, camino con la cabeza baja con la esperanza de que no me vean y trato de atenuar mi luz incluso cuando estoy hecha para brillar.

Desafiándome a ser valiente. Recuerdo haber tenido una conversación con @mipiano semanas atrás en la que hablábamos de cuántas tomas solíamos hacer cuando grabábamos un vídeo y después de ella, tenía bastante curiosidad por saber si algún día podría hacerlo todo en una sola toma.
Después de grabar este vídeo, estuve tentado de abandonar y volver a grabar porque todo lo que veía eran errores pero decidí compartirlo tal cual.
Puede que no sea algo demasiado loco pero supongo que es un paso para ser más valiente.
