The Gospel of Mark presents us with a profound challenge: we cannot truly understand the New Testament without first knowing the Old. This shortest of the four Gospels moves at a breathtaking pace, immediately plunging us into Jesus' ministry with demon exorcisms, healings, and miracles. Yet each of these powerful acts carries deep Old Testament symbolism that we might miss if we don't know the backstory. The demons in the land represent foreign nations oppressing Israel. The healings from fever, leprosy, and lameness reverse the covenant curses of Deuteronomy 28. When Jesus calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee, He's fulfilling Psalm 107 where only Yahweh can still the waters. The irony is striking: while the disciples ask 'Who is this that even the wind and sea obey Him?' the demons immediately recognize Jesus as the Son of the Most High God. Mark is showing us that Jesus is the fulfillment of everything Israel has been waiting for, the One who can remove covenant curses and restore God's people. As we read this Gospel, we're invited to move beyond simply marveling at the miraculous events and ask ourselves: What is the inspired author trying to teach us through these historical moments? Understanding Mark requires us to see how the entire biblical story connects from Genesis to Revelation.

Leviticus records God’s instructions for sacrifices, priests, purity, and worship so Israel could approach a holy God according to His commands. The continual offerings, the Day of Atonement, and the work of the priesthood show that sin required sacrifice and cleansing. The priests served continually, and access to God’s presence was limited. Leviticus reveals God’s holiness and shows that His people needed atonement in order to draw near to Him.

Deuteronomy 33–34 concludes with Moses blessing the tribes of Israel before his death. He blesses each tribe and reminds Israel of God’s care for His people. Moses then goes up Mount Nebo, sees the Promised Land, and dies there according to the word of the Lord. Joshua becomes Israel’s new leader, and the book ends by declaring that no prophet had arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.

Deuteronomy 31–32 records Moses preparing Israel for life after his death and teaching them the Song of Moses. God tells Moses that Israel will turn to other gods and break the covenant, and the song will stand as a witness against them. The song declares God’s faithfulness, Israel’s rebellion, coming judgment, and God’s compassion on His people. These chapters show that the Lord knows the future, remains faithful to His covenant, and will judge and restore according to His word.

The books of Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and the post-exilic prophets record Israel’s return from exile and God’s continued faithfulness. After judgment came because of covenant unfaithfulness and idolatry, God allowed His people to return to the land. The temple was rebuilt, Jerusalem’s walls were restored, and God preserved His people during this period. These books show that God remained faithful to His promises while calling His people to repentance, obedience, and renewed covenant faithfulness.

Deuteronomy 29–30 records Moses renewing God’s covenant with Israel and setting before them life and death, blessing and curse. Moses reminds Israel of God’s works in Egypt and the wilderness and warns that turning to other gods will bring judgment and exile. Yet God promises restoration if His people return to Him with all their heart. The Lord declares that His command is near and calls Israel to choose life by loving Him, obeying His voice, and holding fast to Him.

Daniel and Ezekiel were written during Israel’s exile in Babylon and reveal God’s sovereignty over nations and His faithfulness to His people. Daniel shows that God rules over kings and kingdoms through events such as the fiery furnace, the lions’ den, and prophetic visions. Ezekiel calls Israel to repentance, announces judgment, and promises future restoration, including a new heart and a new spirit. These books show that even in exile, God remains in control and continues His plan for His people according to His word.

Deuteronomy 27–28 records the covenant blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience. The Wisdom Books—Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon—teach God’s people how to live with wisdom, fear the Lord, and trust Him in every season of life. These books address suffering, worship, righteousness, love, justice, and the meaning of life. They show that earthly life includes both joy and hardship and repeatedly call people to trust God rather than rely on what they see. The Wisdom Literature reveals that true wisdom begins with fearing the Lord and living according to His truth.

Deuteronomy 25–26 contains laws about justice, honesty, family responsibility, and worship. Israel was commanded to use honest weights and measures, care for others rightly, and remember God’s commands in daily life. In chapter 26, the people were instructed to bring their firstfruits to the Lord and declare how He brought them out of Egypt and gave them the land. These chapters show that Israel was to live with justice, gratitude, and remembrance of God’s saving acts.

The prophetic books call God’s people back to covenant faithfulness. Prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, and others warned Israel and Judah that continued disobedience would bring the judgment described in the Law, including exile from the land. They confronted idolatry, injustice, and rebellion against God. At the same time, the prophets also proclaimed God’s promise to restore His people and fulfill His purposes. Deuteronomy 23–24 records laws for Israel concerning the assembly of the Lord, holiness in the camp, marriage, justice, and care for others. Certain groups were restricted from the assembly, and Israel was commanded to remain holy before the Lord. 1 and 2 Kings record the reign of Solomon and the division of Israel into two kingdoms after his death. Solomon was given wisdom and built the temple, but he turned his heart after other gods through many wives, as warned in the Law. After him, Israel split into the northern and southern kingdoms, and many kings did evil in the sight of the Lord. The books also record the ministries of prophets such as Elijah and Elisha and show that Israel and Judah faced judgment because they turned away from God’s commands. These books reveal the consequences of disobedience and God’s faithfulness to His word.

1 and 2 Samuel record Israel’s transition from judges to kings. Samuel leads Israel, Saul becomes the first king and is rejected for disobedience, and David is chosen by God to rule. David defeats Goliath, becomes king, and receives God’s covenant promise that his kingdom would endure. David later sins against Uriah and Bathsheba and faces serious consequences. These books show both human failure and God’s continued faithfulness to His covenant promises.

The book of Ruth records how God preserved a family line during the time of the judges. Ruth, a Moabite widow, leaves her people and commits herself to Naomi, saying, “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” She comes to Bethlehem, where Boaz acts as a redeemer according to the law. Their marriage leads to the birth of Obed, the grandfather of King David. Ruth shows God’s providence and faithfulness in preserving the family line of David.

The book of Judges records Israel’s life in the land after Joshua, showing repeated cycles of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Israel failed to drive out the nations and turned to other gods, and the Lord allowed their enemies to oppress them. When the people cried out, God raised up judges to deliver them. The book ends with the repeated statement that there was no king in Israel and everyone did what was right in his own eyes. The Gospels record that Jesus was laid in the tomb and that His followers rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. John 18 records the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. When Jesus says, “I am he,” the soldiers draw back and fall to the ground, yet He willingly allows Himself to be taken. Jesus protects His disciples and is brought before the authorities, where He is questioned and found without guilt. Peter denies Him, and the crowd chooses Barabbas instead of Jesus. These events show that Jesus was innocent and that His arrest and suffering took place according to God’s plan.

John 15 records Jesus teaching that He is the true vine and His disciples are the branches. Those who abide in Him bear fruit, but apart from Him they can do nothing. John 13–14 records Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, teaching humility and service, and declaring that His followers are made clean through His word. Psalm 118 declares, “This is the day that the Lord has made,” and speaks of the stone the builders rejected becoming the cornerstone. The Gospels show these words fulfilled as Jesus enters Jerusalem and is later rejected and crucified. The crowds cried “Hosanna,” asking for salvation, as Jesus came according to the Scriptures. These passages reveal that the events of the cross and resurrection were according to God’s plan, showing His steadfast love and the salvation He brings through Christ.

Paul writes his letter to the Philippians for a few reasons. First, Paul is concerned that because Paul’s circumstances might be construed as a curse coming from God. Second, it is Paul’s desire that the Philippians continue in their participation in the gospel. Finally, Paul desires that the Philippians be warned about the theology of those of the party of the circumcision who have adopted a sort of “health and wealth” theology. Paul’s words were directly applicable in his day. They are just as applicable today.

John writes this letter in order to both commend a fellow believer named Gaius and to warn him about someone name Diotrephes who rejects the words and teaching of the apostles. Commendation and warning: these are strong and necessary words for all believers.

In this episode, Theological Professor/Bible Teacher David Klingler talks us through the book of Ephesians. Paul divided his letter to the Ephesians into two clear segments; applying the truths of the first makes possible the actions and lifestyle of the second. Paul spent the first three chapters of the letter discussing God’s creation of a holy community by His gift of grace in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The members of this community have been chosen by God through the work of Christ, adopted as sons and daughters of God, and brought near to the Father through faith in His Son. All people with this faith—Jews and Gentiles alike—were dead in their transgressions and sins but have been made alive because of the person and work of Jesus Christ.
While Paul was not responding to a particular theological or moral problem, he wanted to protect against future problems by encouraging the Ephesians to mature in their faith. So after laying out profound theological truths in the first half of the book, Paul made his purpose clear: he expected that this community of faith would walk in accordance with its heavenly calling. As a result of the theological realities Christians accept by their faith in God, several practices should follow in their relationships within the church, in the home, and in the world.

Paul understood that the ministry would only become more difficult for Timothy with the apostle’s impending death. (Indeed, at some point after this letter from Paul, Timothy was imprisoned for his faith). Paul knew that Timothy’s task of keeping the church within the bounds of sound doctrine while encouraging believers to live their lives well for the sake of Christ would be an often thankless and difficult task. Though hardship would come, Paul wanted Timothy to continue in those things he had learned, drawing on the rich heritage of faith that had been passed down to the young pastor, not just from Paul but also from his mother and grandmother.
The most striking feature of Paul’s encouragement comes when the aging apostle used a phrase that showed up prominently in his letter to Timothy four years prior. In that earlier letter, Paul exhorted Timothy to “fight the good fight.” But in this letter, Paul turned that phrase on himself, writing that he had “fought the good fight . . . finished the course . . . [and] kept the faith." What a great encouragement it must have been to the young pastor of the church at Ephesus to know that his mentor boldly modeled his perseverance in the faith, even to the point of death.

Timothy’s youth no doubt served him well, allowing for the energy and vigor he needed to serve his people. However, it also caused inevitable difficulties with older Christians who may not have taken quickly to the leadership of such a young man because of his lack of knowledge and experience in leadership. It was important to Paul that Timothy set an example of consistent faith and a good conscience, remaining above reproach and exercising the spiritual gifts that God had given him (1 Timothy 4:12–16).
However, Paul knew that such a task would not be easy for the young man. Therefore, on two occasions, Paul encouraged Timothy to “fight the good fight” (1:18; 6:12). Perseverance in what was good often became a slog for Timothy, requiring thick skin and a clear purpose.

The doctrine of the incarnation in the letter to Titus grounds its message of producing right living through the careful attention to theological truth. The churches on Crete were just as susceptible to false teachers as any other church, so Paul directed Titus to establish a group of faithful elders to oversee the doctrinal purity and good conduct of the believers on Crete. Paul exhorted Titus to “speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1), a clear direction that this should be the young pastor’s primary role.
However, Paul also understood that when a body of believers embraces sound doctrine, the result is changed and purified lives that produce “good deeds” (mentioned in Titus 2:7, 14; 3:8, 14). God’s grace is the motivation for all good deeds. Paul gave instructions to Titus about the roles of specific groups of people—older men, older women, young women, young men, and slaves—as well as general instructions to all believers about their conduct. Right living was essential because Christ “gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed,” saving us “by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 2:14; 3:5).

In the opening of his letter, James called himself a bond-servant of God, an appropriate name given the practical, servant-oriented emphasis of the book. Throughout the book, James contended that faith produces authentic deeds. In other words, if those who call themselves God’s people truly belong to Him, their lives will produce deeds or fruit. In language and themes that sound similar to Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, James rails against the hypocritical believer who says one thing but does another.
For James, faith was no abstract proposition but had effects in the real world. James offered numerous practical examples to illustrate his point: faith endures in the midst of trials, calls on God for wisdom, bridles the tongue, sets aside wickedness, visits orphans and widows, and does not play favorites. He stressed that the life of faith is comprehensive, impacting every area of our lives and driving us to truly engage in the lives of other people in the world. While James recognized that even believers stumble, he also knew that faith should not coexist with people who roll their eyes at the less fortunate, ignore the plight of others, or curse those in their paths.

Paul’s message to Philemon was a simple one: based on the work of love and forgiveness that had been wrought in Philemon’s heart by God, show the same to the escaped and now-believing slave Onesimus. The apostle’s message would have had extra force behind it because he knew Philemon personally. Paul had explained the gospel to Philemon and had witnessed the profound result: new life blossoming in a once-dead heart (Philemon 1:19). Paul knew that conversion is nothing to trifle with, but that it should be honored and fostered.
So Paul made a request. He wanted Philemon to forgive Onesimus, to accept the slave as a brother in Christ, and to consider sending Onesimus back to Paul, as the apostle found him useful in God’s service (1:11–14). Paul did not minimize Onesimus’s sin. This was not some kind of cheap grace that Paul asked Philemon to offer. No, there was sacrifice required in this request, and because of that, Paul approached the topic with gentleness and care (1:21). His letter to Philemon presents in full color the beautiful and majestic transition from slavery to kinship that comes as a result of Christian love and forgiveness.
