Have you ever felt like the weight of grief could define your entire existence?

In this episode, I'm here to shake things up and challenge the traditional narrative of widowhood. It's time to reclaim the journey as our own and recognize that being a widow doesn't solely revolve around our deceased husbands. Yes, we honor their memory, but we also have a life to live.

Widowhood is a chapter, not the entire book of your life and being a widow doesn't define us; it propels us forward into the next chapter of our lives. We must remember that our happiness matters too, and our late husbands would want us to find joy and purpose. It's about shifting our perspective on grief and embracing the opportunities for growth and fulfillment.

So, let's not just survive but thrive and truly live with intention as you Widow Your Way ❤️

The microphone feels different this time! As I struggle with my ongoing battle against cancer, I'm reflecting on this podcast and direction it's taking. I feel the need now more than ever to be more clear with my message and purpose.

So far Widow Your Way has been more of an expression or feeling of empowerment for Widows, but not put into clear words.

I have never wanted to be someone who gives Widow advice. There are no step-by-step guides here, no one-size-fits-all remedies—just the honest, often messy, chronicles of learning to trust myself on this Widow Journey.

I love the quote by Brene Brown, "One day you will tell your story of how you've overcome what you're going through now, and it will become part of someone else's survival guide"

This podcast has always been meant as a guide for you to discover your own unique path to living happily even after. Widow your way is about trusting yourself and making your own rules.

Your Widow Journey. Your Loss. Your Life. Your Purpose.

Growing up, I struggled with the concept of gratitude, feeling pressure to be thankful without truly understanding its depth. As a widow, this struggle intensified when faced with societal pressure to be grateful.

I share personal experiences of downplaying my grief and masking my emotions to appear strong. This is a common struggle among widows – feeling the need to put on a facade while silently battling with our grief.

Reflecting on my journey, I realized the importance of finding balance between honoring grief and embracing gratitude. It's about allowing both to coexist. True gratitude, I've learned, comes from acknowledging and feeling all emotions, even the painful ones.

This episode was inspired by my recent guest appearance on the Hilistically Speaking Podcast with Hilary Russo, who had me opening up in unexpected ways.

My recent trip to Podfest has ignited a shift in my perspective!

Podfest, a haven for podcasters, exposed a truth—I've been holding back. I believe fear of rejection has tempered my honesty, and it's time to change that.

I'm recalibrating the way I fuel our conversations from behind the mic. Expect to hear the unvarnished truth, the kind that might ruffle feathers or challenge comfort zones, as I commit to a podcast that's as real as the life I'm living.

As we move forward, I'm thrilled to unveil a new website at www.widowyourway.com, where we can connect in various ways. You can schedule a call to chat, ask me anything, or share your story for the podcast, social media, or my upcoming blog. I'm excited to be speaking at events and offering widow workshops soon.

Get ready for more surprise appearances on other podcasts and interviews with inspiring widows and other special guests dedicated to helping you move forward in life, not just grief.

Being a widow is just one chapter in our life journey. Together, we'll redefine the widow's journey, celebrating that love endures beyond loss.

Imagine life just starting to get good, feeling like things are finally falling into place. Seemingly worry free and looking forward to starting a new year off with a bang!

And then the unexpected happens or should I say the unexpected returns!

Just 6 weeks after my husband died in 2018, I was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer with no cure, Ocular Melanoma. As hard as the news was to accept then, it's even harder now with a new diagnosis of Stage IV Metastatic Uveal Melanoma.

Out of all my journeys in grief, widowhood and self discovery, my cancer journey has been the hardest to accept with a limited life expectancy.

As I face this new reality I hope you continue to follow me on this journey of embracing life fully and finding joy in each moment until the very end.

What if Thanksgiving doesn't have to be a full-throttle, joy-filled celebration? What if it's okay to shuffle the traditions, to feel a little less than festive, especially when you're wrestling with grief or loneliness?

This episode is a heart-to-heart conversation, acknowledging that it's absolutely fine to have an 'Unhappy' Thanksgiving.

We challenge the idea that gratitude must be monumental, instead, inviting you to celebrate the seemingly small things you are grateful for. And above all, we remind you that love is still very much alive.

In this episode I have a candid conversation with Divorcee, Josie Falcon of the Heavy Pages Podcast, and what unfolded was truly eye-opening!

We found ourselves marveling at the similarities between the journeys of Widows and Divorcees. The only difference was my husband is dead and hers is not!

While the circumstances of widowhood and divorce are unique, the emotional rollercoaster that follows is surprisingly alike.

This conversation is a beautiful reminder that loss is painful for everyone, no matter what form it comes in. If we are willing to be open, we can celebrate these connections and join each other on the winding paths of healing and self-exploration.

After all, love is not dead for any of us!

Are you ready to hear the unfiltered thoughts that often whirl in a widow's head?

Lets talk about the cliché comments and thoughtless questions that are often thrown at widows. You know the ones: "How are you doing?", "They are in a better place", the list goes on. I'm going to give you authentic responses many widows may harbor and are just too polite to say outload.

Just wait until you hear the most insensitive question asked!

This episode is a gentle reminder that finding the right words to say to a grieving Widow can be challenging, but it's equally difficult for the Widow. Even if you don't have the perfect words. Sometimes, silence, presence, and support through actions speak volumes.

Grief is a universal, yet deeply personal experience. Like many of you, I've had my fair share of losses and not just from people dying. So for me it's not about comparing losses, but about acknowledging that each loss hits differently for each person. They all hurt in their own way.

So why do we compare our grief to others? We are not here to compare scars; we're here to learn how to cope with our feelings. We should be supporting each other through the pain, no matter what form the loss is in.

Even though the pain of loss is difficult to navigate so is the healing process. Eventually, our hearts can heal, and we can find love and happiness again, regardless of the type of loss we've experienced.

Let's remember to encourage and support each other during those times as well. That is the purpose of this podcast. To remind you that love is not dead, just your husband ❤️

Few of us truly grasp the financial devastation Widows may face following the death of a spouse. In this episode we shed light on the realities of Widows having to adapt to a single income or no income at all. We discuss the misconception about everyone having life insurance and the tough choices that must be made to adapt to a new financial situation.

However, it's not all grim. This conversation also uncovers ways we can lend our support to widows, both financially and emotionally. Perhaps you've pondered over how you can extend a helping hand. Listen as we brainstorm ideas from grocery shopping, settling a utility bill, to treating them to dinner or even inviting them on a family vacation. Money can't replace the love of a partner, but offering care and support where it's needed the most can make an enormous difference in their lives.

This episode is a raw exploration of my journey through the stages of grief. I share my struggles with acceptance, my evolving beliefs about the afterlife, and my quest for understanding the nature of death.

This episode is part of my survival guide, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It's my way of reaching out to others walking the same path, a beacon of hope in the fog of loss. Taking a little break between seasons, I hope you enjoy this hilarious parody theme song created with my best friend's husband, Tyrone. He has been providing comfort and support to me and Angie during our grieving process.

The upcoming third season of the podcast is to challenge the norms, misconceptions, and stereotypes around this intense emotional journey. This season promises to be an enlightening and engaging one. I want to hear from you, too. Share your widowhood experiences, insights, and what you wish someone had told you when you embarked on this path.

Before we kick off season 3, I urge you to go back and revisit the wisdom packed in seasons one and two., as I take a small hiatus to rest and recharge. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for your unwavering support and encouragement. I want to acknowledge how immensely valuable your feedback has been. It's been a profound reminder that while our experiences vary, we are not alone in our journeys. Your stories, your strength, your resilience – is a constant reminder to me that love is not dead, just my husband. ❤️

We all have regrets! Things we want to take back. Things we want to go back in time to change if we could. There are some wrongs we can make right, but with death. It kind of puts a stop to it so we are stuck with could’ve, should’ve, would’ve. For better or worse, all the things we may regret make is who we are today. No matter if they were good or bad.

I can make myself crazy thinking of all the things I could have done differently in my marriage, but is there anything I could have done to change this outcome? No, Tom would still be dead. So, there is no point in making myself miserable with all the could’ve, would’ve and should’ve in life!

But… WHAT IF? Listen to find out more!

Many people feel that celebrating death anniversaries is part of the grieving process. Because we all grieve differently, how we choose to spend these death anniversaries will be different too. Death anniversaries can bring up feelings of sadness and grief, but it can also be a filled with happy memories.

There comes a time for a lot of widows for many different reasons that we don't want to celebrate this anniversary anymore. My friend Matt from The Solo Dad Podcast shared a beautiful analogy of how grief is like a race. We are all moving at different paces, but I would like to take it a step further. Grief is also a race that no one wants to win but we do want to finish!

Finishing this grief race doesn't mean letting go. It means you are leaving behind the pain and sorrow or grief, celebrating a new life you are creating for yourself.

I am no stranger to loss. The sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, tiredness, shock, loneliness, and confusion.

One thing that I don’t think is talked about enough is feeling gratitude after a loss. Just like joy can coincide with grief, so can gratitude. It’s the choice you make to celebrate the positive memories instead of focusing on the negative emotions. It’s the choice to choose love over sadness.

By choosing love and gratitude I have been able to look at my losses and gaining a new meaning of life.

I had the amazing honor of being an Impact Speaker at the Women’s Wellness Fest in Jacksonville Florida 2 weekends ago. And man was I nervous! I had no idea what I should speak about. The topic changed about 3 or 4 times and then it finally hit me! It’s the whole reason I was back at the Women’s Wellness Fest to begin with… and why this event is so dear to me. It was at this event last year that my dear friend Mary Beth encouraged me to do public speaking or start a podcast.

As I was deciding on what to say I was remembering how I met Mary Beth and it made me reevaluate how I felt about everything happening for a reason. I used to believe in Karma and everything happening for a reason. When something good happens we are so grateful and we accept it with no questions asked. We call it a blessing and run with it! Even when something bad happens we put a spin on it and say things like “when one door closed another one opens”

But what happens when tragedy strikes? Do we still hold that same belief?

For more information about the Women's Wellness Fest you can find them on Instagram.

I'm exhausted! I just finished a cross country road trip in 10 weeks and 3 days with 7,312 miles! This trip has been an amazing experience and an important part of my healing journey but has also left me exhausted physically.  I was feeling guilty about not sharing an episode this week because I was so tired so I decided to share my thoughts and feelings on where I'm out right now in my life.

I think it's important to take the time we need to rest  so we can refocus and come out stronger!

Grief has changed me. Every part of me. It has changed my everyday life, my morning routine. It has changed how I see the world.  It has changed my outlook on life. It has changed my beliefs. It has changed how I interact with people. It has changed how I love.

Grief is now my constant companion. I’ve let it define me in some ways and I’m okay with that because grief has also helped me grow. Without the tragedies that brought me grief I would not be the person I am today. I refuse to believe the universe will take something so precious as life away without replacing it with something else.

One of the things I've hated about myself is how complaisant I've been my whole life, especially in my marriage. This has me reflecting on all my relationships now.  I have always wanted nothing more than to be loved and appreciated.

I have a hard time setting boundaries and saying no. I’m learning how to say no out of love and compassion for myself. I can still be nice and say no. Anyone who truly cares for me will not be upset, respect my decision and understand it came from a place of love.

I’m worthy of so much more and the fact that I can say that now proves it.

I have a long list of things I want to do and places to go. I make some of the same excuses as most people. I need more money or time off work. But that has not been what has really stopped me.

It's years of being told to keep dreaming and feeling like it's always out of reach. I am so done with making excuses of why I can’t go here and there or do this and that! I am finding ways to make my dreams of traveling come true!

What are you waiting for? What is that one thing you want to do? That place you want to go more than anything? Something you have always dreamed of and thought was impossible. What is one little step you can take to get there? Whatever you do…. Don’t give up on that dream.

I’ve been feeling that way for a while now and have been trying to figure out what I need to do or what I even want. Talking about death is difficult but funerals do tend to spark the conversation, but usually on a superficial level. It's not until you lose someone very close, having to plan a funeral and deal with the aftermath does it make you contemplate your own death.

Death should not have us thinking about our dying. Death should have us thinking about living. How do you want to live the rest of your life?

We have all been pushed out of the nest in our lives. By our parents or unexpected circumstances in life. When death pushes us we tend to build a new nest for ourselves. A nest of grief, cozy enough for one. We can become comfortable there. With all your fears and resistance, you have to leave this nest. But how? Trust yourself. Listen to your intuition. Open your eyes. Open your heart and jump! It’s time to fly!

People ask me all the time how I came up with the podcast name Love is not dead, Just my husband. I have a slightly dark sense of humor and it was really me just joking around. I thought this podcast was going to be about me sharing funny stories of dating as a widow. Turns out I have a whole lot more to say.

I used to think my journey was about being a widow, but it’s not. My journey is about love. But not in the way that people think. I honestly don’t think I really know what love is anymore. What it means, how it feels, what does it look like? Will I ever find love again? You have to keep listening to find out!

I don’t normally share my experiences with psychics, mediums or tarot readings because everyone believes something different. I’m also not some hard core fanatic but I do enjoy it. I don't take messages from beyond too seriously but I do find comfort in having a reminder that Tom is still with me. We should probably know that our loved ones would want us to be happy, but sometimes we just want to hear it. And there is one little thing that has been mentioned so often that I can't help believe that some messages are real. You have to listen to know what it is!

If you are interested, below are two Tarot Readers that I enjoy on YouTube that you may want to check out for free or contact for your own private reading.

Want to know a dirty little secret? Some widows are actually happier after the loss of their spouse! I am one of those widows!

I am a widow that is actually living happier after. And it's not that I'm happy that my husband died but where I am in my life, I am happier than expected and that is something that is hard for me to share with other people.

Sometimes there are circumstances in a marriage that some people just don't understand. In my case I found a sense of adventure that I didn't have in my marriage! But there are many other circumstances that would make this a true statement as well. No one should feel judged for moving forward and living a life that is best for them. What's the point of living if you are not going to live?

Do you ever want to give a big F***K You to your spouse for dying? Do you ever feel guilty for saying bad things about your dead spouse?

I hate that being a widow is so romanticized and I fell into that trap by idolizing my husband because you shouldn't speak ill of the dead. I don't want to disrespect my husband in any way but this is my story! And the only way for me to widow my own way is to acknowledge the anger I have towards Tom for dying and for the things that happened just before. This wasn't even something I thought I would ever talk about but the time seems right now.

If I don't make peace with this it is going to be much harder to find a new happily ever ever. Because after all, love is not dead, just my husband.

It’s ironic that as I’m trying to tell my story of how I learned to widow my own way and I am finding that I am experiencing a lot of the same moments now, almost 5 years later. Like, something is going to continue to happen over and over until I have actually learned my lesson.

In today's episode I talk about being alone versus being lonely. This is something I have really been struggling with since Tom died but if I’m honest it’s something I’ve struggled with my whole life. I have always felt alone! Like no one was really there for me… specifically for me.

Everyone talks about how empowering it is to be alone and do things alone. And it is. There is definitely something to overcome in that. I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job so far being alone. But you don’t have to turn into a recluse and be 100% alone all the time to be on that journey! I also don’t think learning to be alone is the cure all for loneliness. At least not for me.

This episode was recorded on a whim right after my dog Vegas went missing!

I have 2 dogs but these are not my pets by choice. Vegas an Old English Bulldog and Caroline a Pit Bull. Tom and I agreed that we would not have any more pets so we can have more freedom, but he broke that promise. He disguised Vegas as a birthday gift for me, but I called bullshit! As much as I tried there was no way I could resist his cuteness and puppy kisses. Everyone loved him and he soon became very spoiled.

Then came Caroline, a broken discount puppy from my brother to Tom. Against every fiber in my being, I took this puppy home and somehow, I became her person.

Of course, I was the one stuck with the responsibility of taking care of these dogs before and after Tom died. I didn't want any more pets. It was like having children all over again and I didn't want the responsibility and commitment to took to be a pet owner.

With the thought of losing Vegas came a lot of guilt. Guilt because these were Tom’s dogs and ever since he died, I felt like I was stuck with them. As much as I loved them, I also resented them but after this night I am grateful for the gifts that were given to me. These dogs have sat at my side while I have cried and given me comfort. They have slept by my bedside when I’ve been sick. They have been someone to talk to on my loneliest days. They show me unconditional love I am always greeted with a wagging tail. What felt like more like an obligation has now been replaced with gratitude.

Tell me something you have been left the responsibility of caring for after your loved one passed away? Do you feel resentment like it’s a burden or do you feel grateful that you have it?

When we lose someone that has been a major part of our lives, we may struggle with who we are without them. How can we let our identity become so wrapped up in someone or something that we forget who we actually are. We are more than just a spouse, a sibling, a child, parent, or a friend. How do we redefine who we are and rediscover this new version of ourselves?
I have discovered that my identity crisis didn't come from becoming a widow. It was the death of my husband that has forced me to discover who I am. I always thought I was easy going, friendly, and thoughtful. I never realized how complaisant I was and never making any decisions for myself. It was always to appease my husband because keeping him happy seemed to be more important than my own happiness. I am discovering a more confident and independent version of me. I still struggle with this new version of myself, and the path of self-love is not easy, but the good thing is that love is not dead, just my husband.

This episode may be a little controversial depending on where you are in your grief.  Today I want to talk about support groups and the importance of finding one that is right for you. Being a widow means something different to us all. Our wants, needs, and expectations do not always align and are not the same as others.

I’m a completely different widow today than I was after my husband Tom died. I did not like the bitter and angry person was becoming back then. I now have a much more positive outlook and passion for life! This is all part of learning to widow your own way and deciding what type of person you want to be. We can be angry and live in the past or we can forgive and move forward. Let's move forward!

Grieving through the holidays is a tough one! Whether it is the first Christmas or the 10th, the loss of our loved one stays with us. This time of the year has a different meaning for all of us. I was really trying to think of something inspirational and hoping I could give you something meaningful, but the thing is I don’t celebrate Christmas like everyone else. So this Christmas I just want you to remember! Cherish the memories of the one you have loss and relive them with your family and friends. I think this is important because I feel like I’m forgetting sometimes. Keep up your family traditions or make some new ones.

I think I will be making a new one this year, at least until I have grandchildren. No gifts! The things I want money cannot buy. The things I want to give are not for sale. Gratitude and Love is now what Christmas means to me. I want to enjoy this time of year the way I used too and I can now because I realize the spirit of Christmas is not dead, just my husband.

I want to hear your favorite Christmas memory of your loved one! Please visit my Facebook page or send me a private message ♥

So you’re a widow… Now What?

If only there was a step by step guide! I don’t know about you but I need rules or instructions. There are little things that keep your mind occupied for a while, but then realization kicks in and you find yourself alone trying to figure out what to do next. Be prepared! It's going to suck but one thing death and cancer has taught me is that we all have limited time. If you are constantly worried about what is next, you are miss everything!

They say the first year of being widow is the hardest and in this episode you learn all about the good, bad and the ugly of mine. I learned was there is no right or wrong way to be a widow. There are no rules or expectations! Only the ones we put on ourselves.
I definitely don’t have all the answers, but I can share my experiences in hopes that you can relate. Maybe you could even learn from my mistakes,  if there are truly any mistakes in widowing. We are all figuring it as we go, just widowing our own way!
