Formerly knows as GO Spartanburg, the GO Carolinas podcast is a great source for information about culture, events, outdoor recreation and events, dining, history, and more in Upstate SC and Western North Carolina. We talk to folks from all sorts of organizations that make life in the Carolinas a little more fun. From symphony orchestras and theatre to land preservation, hiking trails, and regional history, we try to let you know about great things to do in this area.
In this episode of Go Carolinas, host Mike Miller interviews Claude Schmid from Veteran's Last Patrol. VLP is an organization based in Spartanburg that works to provide friendship and services to military veterans who are in nursing home or hospice care.

On this episode of GO Carolinas, host Mike Miller speaks with Jason Posnock. Jason is the Vice President & Chief Artistic Officer at BMC. We discussed the histor of BMC, the application process for students, and the upcoming concert season, among other things.
Jason is a former member of the Pittsburgh Symphony and is Concertmaster of the Asheville Symphony in addition to his work at BMC.

Diane has been with WSPA for 13 years and has been a reporter and anchor in New York and Pennsylvania before moving to the Upstate. Diane tells us about how she ended up at WSPA, what goes into putting together a news broadcast, singing with the Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble, and finishes with a great story about a lady she was able to help with her reporting.

In today's show, we hear from Rose Jenkins Lane. Rose is with Conserving Carolina, a land preservation organization headquartered in Hendersonville, NC. Conserving Carolina is working with PAL in Spartanburg to help develop the Saluda Grade Rail Trail. They also were instrumental in the development of DuPont State Forest as a recreational area and have helped create a large network of hiking trails and greenways in Rutherford, Henderson, and Polk Counties.

In this episode, we interviewed Andrew Gleason, president of the Foothills Trail Conservancy. The Foothills Trail is a 75 mile hiking trail that goes from Table Rock State Park to Oconee State Park. Thousands of people hike it every year, including many who through-hike the entire distance. Andrew tells us about the origins and history of the trail, some of the best parts to hike, how to deal with bears, and how to support the trail.

Featuring the moving oratorio Alzheimer’s Stories by Robert Cohen, this work grapples with this devastating disease while offering hope, love, and music to those who suffer from Alzheimer’s, those whose loved-ones struggle with it, and the caregivers who provide kindness and dignity for their patients.
Thursday, November 17 at 7:30PM in Twichell Auditorium, this event is free and open to the public. Valet parking will be provided for those requiring assistance.

On this week's episode, we speak with Linda Powell from the Glenn Springs Preservation Society. The GSPS has worked for over 15 years to restore and preserve the history of the Glenn Springs area of Spartanburg County, which was once home to a world class resort hotel where people came to drink the mineral water. The hotel was open for over 100 years, from the 1830's to the early 1940's. They also bottled the water and shipped it all over the country and even the world. Linda tells us about the history of the area and the efforts they have made in the past 15 years to restore the old stone church, which was once home to Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church.

The Spartanburg Community Band was formed in 1996 and the Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble started shortly after that. Both groups have concerts coming up over the next 2 weekends - The concert band is on Oct 16th at Chapman and the jazz ensemble is on the 23rd at Spartanburg Community College.
In today's show I speak with John Holloway and Rick Meehan from the concert band and Tom Wright from the jazz ensemble. We will learn about the history of both groups and get more details on the upcoming concerts.

James Reese is an institution in Spartanburg's music scene. He spent much of the 60's and 70's touring with such Motown acts at Stevie Wonder and the Temptations. He taught music in Spartanburg District 2 and was the orchestra director at the Evangel Cathedral. James was also the music director for the MLK celebration at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium for many years. He also wrote, arranged, and produced a gospel album with all original music.
James joins the podcast to discuss his life in music and shares some great stories.

On this episode of GO! Spartanburg, we dive into the art world. Sarah Tignor is the Chief Operating Officer for the Johnson Collection, which is a collection of over 1,300 works of art. We met at their gallery in downtown Spartanburg and Sarah discussed the collection and how people can see it at various places around Spartanburg. For the second part of the episode, we did a walking tour of their current exhibit, which features water colors by Charleston artist Alice Smith (1876-1958).

Today the organization feeds over 1,200 people each day. Jayne talks about how Mobile Meals was started, how they grew, how they rely heavily on volunteers, and how they manage to raise over $2 million dollars every year. She also discusses the challenges of getting through covid and how they successfully overcame them.
