In this episode of A Clinica Approach to Momming - The Podcast, I catch up with my friend Jess from high school. We haven't seen each other since then, but have followed each other on social media for the past twenty years.

When I first started this podcast, I knew Jess would have to come on. She is an inspiration as a mom and a person. She is a fierce advocate and goes "all in" when fighting for those who don't have a voice.   We catch up and discuss so many "mom topics", but we also highlight Jess's causes she fights so passionately for. Jess and her husband own and run a camp in New Hampshire and we catch up about that as well - HOW COOL?!

Enjoy just "chit-chatting" with two moms on this episode of A Clinical Approach to Momming!  Check out the related links below:

On this podcast, I had the privilege to sit down with Kimberly Hampton, PhD, MS, MBA, RN. She is the first mom I am highlighting in my Super Mom series. Kim is an Assistant Professor of Nursing, mom of two beautiful daughters (age 5 and 9), and a furbaby Pablo the bull mastiff.

We wrestle with the idea of "having it all". What does that mean, and do we want to have it all?! We also had an honest conversation about relationships, working, and momming and how to better communicate with our significant others - just two moms chatting and trying to be real about mom life! Lately, we find that social media doesn't highlight actual motherhood, but instead mom influencers with perfect lives and homes. I appreciate Kim being vulnerable and honest so that other moms can relate and together build a real mom community!  We discussed some action steps in the podcast and I've provided links below:  Managing expectations https://www.scienceofpeople.com/managing-expectations/ Respond, don’t react https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/temperament/how-to-overcome-emotional-reactivity-and-build-emotional-stability/ ADHD Body Doubling Workgroup https://www.neurodiverging.com/neurodivergent-body-doubling-meetings/

Ashley and I had a casual conversation about eliminating the "Toxic Mom Culture". The key to this lies in gratitude for what you have, along with swapping negative self-talk with positive self-talk. We touch on the careful balance we need to find between giving ourselves grace while being accountable!  Ashley is the creator of the wildly successful TikTok channel, Making Motherhood More. Not only does the channel give us realistic mom advice, but she entertains us as well! She has a program called "Mama Mornings" focusing on getting our mornings back as moms, so we can have happy and fulfilling days. Links below!

In episode #2, I sit down with Dr. Kelly Kessler. Kelly is a physical therapist by trade, but her vast knowledge of the science behind the body and mind connection sets her aside from the rest.

Kelly found her purpose in empowering people to become the best version of themselves after she herself, struggled with an eating disorder and chronic pain.

Kelly shares many of the same values as me, including mindset and the science behind mindset. She learned through her struggles, that true healing happens from the inside out, and made it her mission to find the right tools to improve her wellbeing – even after doctors told her that her condition would only deteriorate further.

Kelly shares her experience and knowledge on her social media accounts where she gives bite-size advice to her followers. Her ability to explain how to help yourself feel better and the science behind why it works in short snippets is truly an incredible talent. I have been captivated by her advice and I am so happy to learn more about her story and get some real-time self-help advice in the process! Kelly also coaches clients and is the creator of the podcast Rewiring Health.

Although Kelly’s niche is anxiety and chronic pain, secondary to an eating disorder, her wealth of information applies to so many situations. As moms, we tend to slack on our self-care. Many of us have experienced chronic pain and sadly, so many of us are affected by disordered eating at some point in our lives. But thankfully we can learn to rewire our nervous system and get “back on track”.

Welcome to A Clinical Approach to Momming - The Podcast! Episode 1: Intro

I am Brielle Dobie, creator of A Clinical Approach to Momming. You are probably wondering what does that even mean?

A Clinical Approach to Momming is a way of strategically thinking about the everyday tasks of being a mom - and you know that task list is endless!

I am not just talking about taking care of your children. In fact, I am talking more so about taking care of yourself, so that you can be a better mom, wife, or partner.

I'm a Registered Nurse by trade, so I've been trained to think with science in mind. I always want to know why something works - and when I set out to help myself after a very traumatic event, I couldn't just do something because someone said it would help. For example, I know many people have success in reducing anxiety by meditating - but what is the actual science behind it?! That is what I like to research!

I created A Clinical Approach to Momming out of necessity. As I said, I experienced a very traumatic event going into motherhood. My son was born with an extremely rare genetic condition, causing him to have multiple birth defects. We spend three months in the NICU while Daniel had surgery after surgery. He is no 4 years old, and has had more surgeries than most grown adults.

Going through this as a new mom was an indescribable feeling. I want to a very dark place and truly lived there for the majority of the first two years of my son's life.

I would always tell people - I just can't get it together.

One day, I woke up and said I NEED to get it together for my son and my family. I can't live this way anymore, and so I set out to find tools to improve my well-being, to improve my day-to-day life.

I started my search by listening and reading the words of self-help gurus. Through all of the information, I kept coming back to the strategies that were backed in science. I realized that I needed to build a healthy foundation if I had any chance of not just surviving, but thriving.

I developed the FESSS Up system which stands for Food, Exercise, Stress, Sleep, and Science. Research shows us that if you have a strong foundation in these habits, (food, exercise, stress, and sleep) you will function better all around. I added the last “S” for science because like I said, I need PROOF as to why I should do things!

A Clinical Approach to Momming is a way of life. It is a way of using science to help us “mom” better. It’s a way of ensuring that we put the oxygen mask on ourselves before putting it on anyone else. It is a way of taking accountability for our own self-care and realizing that without self-care, we are simply just living, we aren’t alive.

A Clinical Approach to Momming helps you develop strategies to “mom better” utilizing a growth mindset. Being a mom is the greatest gift, and challenge. As a mom, you can do anything you put your mind to – but often times we get stuck. A growth mindset shows us that being stuck is just a springboard to growing and flourishing into the person that we want to be and that we NEED to be for our children.

Whether you follow me on social media for my quick science-backed tips to help you mom better, sign on as a private client, use my FESSS UP Journal to build healthy habits, take one of my courses, or listen to this podcast, I hope you find my offerings helpful and insightful. I plan to have guests on this podcast who align with these same views and support using a growth mindset to “mom better”.

I can’t wait to get started! You can find me at www.momsmart.info where you can directly chat with me or find me on socials @momsmartinfo. I’m on fb, ig, and tik tok!

I look forward to connecting with you all!
