Lucid Dreaming: What it is and Why you Should Try It
"Dreams are the guiding words of the soul. Why should I henceforth not love my dreams and not make their riddling images into objects of my daily consideration?" --Carl Jung
In this week's podcast, Michelle and I talk about our experiences with lucid dreaming, and we share our techniques for getting yourself in a lucid state. Read on if you'd like to learn more about lucid dreaming, its benefits, and what scientists have to say about it.
What is Lucid Dreaming?
Simply put, lucid dreaming is being asleep and in a dream while being fully cognizant of the dream state. Normally when we dream we aren't consciously aware, and we can only remember the dream after waking up, and sometimes we can't remember our dreams at all. Lucid dreams tend to be vivid and memorable. I often think of the technique of lucid dreaming as staying awake while falling asleep. It sounds paradoxical, but when I'm in a lucid dream my mind feels alert even though I know for a fact that I'm sleeping. I also know who I am, and I'm capable of acting and making my own decisions in the dream.
Personally, I find lucid dreaming to be an incredibly enjoyable experience, which is why it's such a pleasure to be able to share the process with others here. My lucid dreamscapes are rich in color and texture, and are often spectacularly beautiful. In these dreams, all of my senses are engaged. Best of all, I can fly! When I'm lucid dreaming, I just lift my arms up, and I'm airborne, often soaring over fantastic panoramas that I never imagined possible.
I hope the conversation Michelle and I have about lucid dreaming can convince you that the practice is worth a try. Even if you have difficulty recalling your regular dreams, there are techniques you can use to build up your dream memory so you too can experience lucidity.
