I’ve been a creator along with my wife April since 2009 and believe it or not, I didn’t hire my first VA until about 2 years ago.
It was something I went back and forth on for years and years and it’s honestly been a game-changer.
But it hasn’t been without its challenges. Mainly because I take a lot of pride in this business we’ve built and the thought of someone coming in and messing with that felt super scary!
Do I have to give them my passwords? Are they gonna see sensitive information? What if they steal my identity and siphon my bank accounts leaving me no choice but to start from zero and reinvent myself as a male model? I mean it wouldn’t be the worst thing…
But anyway, in order to truly understand the Pros and Cons of hiring a VA, I asked two experts here today to settle this debate, once and for all.
Yaro Starak is an entrepreneur, investor, and content creator who shares stories about how he’s used content to build audiences and income streams. He’s also the co-founder of InboxDone, an email and calendar assistant service to help busy professionals get back to what matters most. Angelique Stidhum, on the other hand, has been in the marketing and branding space for well over a decade, serving celebrity clients and top brands such as Amazon, PENN/HEAD Tennis, Monster Audio, as well as E-com & Financial Investors. When I tweeted asking if anyone had horror stories about hiring a virtual assistant, Angelique said, “VA kept lying about hours, got caught, found a way in and DELETED the channel at 98k subs. True story.” MAJOR YIKES!

You’re probably thinking this is stupid because you don’t have to just pick one on YouTube, you can do both.
OK, did you not just hear the tagline of the podcast? It has the word stupid in it, which is why we take things to unnecessary extremes and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.
So my wife April and I have had YouTube channels since 2009 and to be honest?
I’ve always kind of sucked at “packaging” videos.
See, Packaging is where you have a concept and you try convey the most interesting or surprising thing about the video using the title & thumbnail so that people will click.
But that’s always felt kinda weird to me, like if the content is good enough, won’t people eventually find it and share it with their friends? That way I won’t even have to play that game.
But then again, if I think about my own viewer behavior, I’m definitely drawn toward titles and thumbnails that have novelty.
So is the answer just cranking up the saturation and tormenting Chat-GPT until it churns out algorithm-approved, character-optimized YouTube title poetry, likely pulverizing our last shred of humanity and creativity?
Sorry. Honestly, before I get carried away we should probably bring in two experts to settle this debate, once and for all.

I recently tweeted “Any creators follow me that are AGAINST scripting their videos?”
And y'all come out of the woodwork! Who knew writing a few words on a page prior to hitting record was so controversial?
And I mean, I guess it makes sense, as creators, we wanna feel as though our authentic, straight-from-the-heart witty banter is why viewers keep coming back.
I also saw a bunch of creators saying that reading off a script just makes you sound robotic but I have a little surprise for you, I’ve been reading this intro off a teleprompter the whole time, could you tell?
But the question remains…is there a right way and a WRONG way - should you script it or wing it?
So I asked two experts here today to settle this debate, once and for all.
George Blackman is a consulting scriptwriter who has written for creators like Ali Abdaal, Ed from Film Booth, and…me. I consider him an expert on all things audience retention and scriptwriting.
Milo AKA MrRoflWaffles, on the other hand, has been making gaming & lifestyle content since 2009, with over 1.8M YouTube subscribers, He’s passionate about the creator economy, brand-creator relations, esports and the potential/pitfalls of Web3.
