Shuvra Deb

My name is Shuvra Deb and my aim is to normalise and de-stigmatise society’s views on mental health. I would love for us all to live in a society where engaging with and looking after our mental health is the norm.

My show arises from my own life-changing experience of going through a devastating category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands in 2017, which caused me to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Shuvra Deb: With You discusses all issues surrounding mental health – what it means to suffer from a mental illness, to heal from mental illness, and how we can ALL maintain a good state of mental health on a day-to-day basis.

Empowerment is about taking control of your life, and about making positive choices. By being empowered, you build the confidence you need to pursue your goals and your dreams. It's also a way of recognizing your self-worth.

I believe that empowerment is a mindset. It is a way of being in the world, which allows you to navigate life's challenges with grace, and with resilience.

I have three quick-fire tips on taking steps toward empowerment.

My first quick-fire tip is to recognize your agency in a situation. In the face of a difficult or unpleasant situation, there will be a range of choices and courses of action open to you. Once you’ve explored what these are, it may be that you favour none of the options. But knowing that you have choices reduces feelings of helplessness, and feelings of disempowerment. In turn, your confidence around the situation will eventually grow, in the knowledge that you do have choices.

My second quick-fire tip is to connect to and listen to your intuition. Intuition is that deep seated knowing that you all have. It’s the ability to understand something instinctively and intrinsically, without the need for logic or for reasoning. By following your intuition, your inner compass, you will start to develop a sense of self-confidence which will make you feel more empowered.

My third quick-fire tip is to focus on the joy! By being joyful – and grateful – you can subvert a lot of the scarcity mania that’s in our daily news currently. Scarcity culture breeds the opposite of empowerment, and leads to fear.

I hope you enjoy the show.

Imposter syndrome is when you experience self-doubt, or feel inadequate in some way. There are ways to overcome this.

My top five tips for dealing with imposter syndrome are:

  1. Be your authentic self. If you try to overcome imposter syndrome by being someone you think others want you to be, you will be doing yourself - and others a huge disservice.

  2. Take some time to focus on past successes. Remind yourself that you can, you have and you will achieve success.

  3. Embrace the fact that perfection is a myth. Do this by setting realistic expectations of yourself.

  4. Reframe the feeling of self-doubt. If something historic is causing your self-doubt to manifest - an event, or something someone said for instance - go back to that moment in time, and view it from the perspective of what you gained. What was the learning, the improvement that followed in your life?

  5. Focus on growth. Do this by gaining experience and knowledge - which you inevitably will - just by showing up.

Here are my three quick-fire tips to help you with your public speaking.

  1. Always, always BE AUTHENTIC. No one wants to hear you being someone else. You don't want to be someone else! Be your authentic self - you're the best!

  2. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. This means doing at least one dry run through of your talk or presentation - out loud! It also means watching and listening to others who have given talks to see what you can learn from them.

  3. PAUSE for effect. People hate silence - especially when they are with other people! Use that to your advantage - if there is a point in your presentation that you wish to emphasise, pause just before making that point, and your audience will be on tenterhooks waiting to hear what you have to say.

Enjoy the show, and good luck with your talk!

On this show, I discuss ways in which we can all find our true purpose in life. I talk about how in those quiet moments in our lives, whether that’s achieved through meditation or perhaps being out in Nature, we can quieten our minds.

In the words of Eckhart Tolle, those quiet moments allow us to “experience with increasing frequency the joy of perceiving with little or no interference of thinking”. By quietening our minds, we invite in our true essence, which leads us to finding our life’s true purpose.

By slowing down and standing still, we allow ourselves to move forward. We start to be able to regulate our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) which is the part of the body that brings us back to a calm state after a stressful event. Chronic stress prevents the PNS from functioning properly. By maintaining a healthy PNS, we allow ourselves the grace to be in a position of strength, even when we receive bad news, or are put under a sudden tight deadline at work. Maintaining practices that lead to a less stressful life means that we are much less likely to react with a panic reaction when a stressor enters our lives.

I discuss the 15-minute rule where I invite you to take just 15 minutes out of your day to meditate. Or, take 15 minutes a day to start and progress a project that is important to you.

Finally, I take you through a guided meditation in this episode.

Sit back, relax and enjoy!

Today's topic is all about self-confidence and how to overcome low self-confidence.

I discuss some of the causes of low self-confidence, such as having unrealistic expectations of yourself, or having coping mechanisms that are unhelpful to you.

My top tips for overcoming low self-confidence that I am offering you today are:

  1. Embracing failure. By embracing failure, you build resilience, and you learn new things along the way. Then, when the successes come, they are even more tantalising!
  2. Getting out of your comfort zone. By doing that, you open up space for new and remarkable things to step into your life.
  3. Setting achievable goals. This is from the perspective of breaking down longer-term goals into smaller stages and steps That way you can keep track of where you are and see your achievements along the way.
  4. Managing your negative self-talk. Getting confident whilst experiencing unhelpful rumination is difficult.
  5. Practising self-compassion. Become more self-aware of your thoughts. Then manage these with rationality and - you guessed it - confidence.

I hope the show helps!

On this show, I continue to explore negative self-talk. I look at this from the perspective of how negative self-talk can have the effect of causing us to procrastinate over taking action, or how it can cause us not to take any action at all.

I discuss the different types of procrastinator that have been identified by Dr. Linda Sapadin, PhD. Do you identify with either of these broad types of procrastination? Do you feel worried or anxious around the task over which you are procrastinating? Alternatively, are you bored or frustrated by the task?

If these sound familiar, tune in, and listen to my quick-fire tips that will help you:

  1. Write down all your skills, talents and achievements. You will work with these.
  2. Identify the cause of your procrastination with precision. This will allow you to move towards a solution.
  3. Visualize yourself undertaking the project or achieving your dream. Feeling yourself live the experience will get you there quicker.

On this show, I discuss some of the way in which we can help ourselves to stop worrying.

According to one study, 59% of adults reported a sense of experiencing daily worry in 2020. So, if you find yourself worrying about something, and on a daily basis, know that you are most definitely not alone.

A little bit of worrying is no bad thing, as it allows us to think through, strategize and prepare for a deadline, or presentation, or to find a solution to a conflict. However, worry becomes a problem when it is excessive in nature, or when it is consuming of all of our other thoughts. Worrying becomes a problem when the thoughts you are having are keeping you up at night, or you are having difficulties in concentrating, eating, or sleeping.

Some of the ways in which we can stop worrying include:

  1. Identifying the exact nature of your worry. My job is making me feel worried is not enough. Identify exactly what about your job is making you worry – a deadline, a difficult colleague, or something else?
  2. Become aware of your own thoughts and recognize triggers. This is best done when you are feeling calm. There is a simple question that you can ask yourself around this, at a time when you are not being triggered by something, and at a time when you are able to look at the causes of your worry in a more objective way. Ask yourself: “What situations, thoughts, or feelings spark my worry and anxiety?”
  3. Embracing uncertainty. One way to embrace uncertainty about the future, after receiving bad news, for example, the loss of a job, is to take action, and to take control of the situations that are within your control. With the example of a job loss, what are the things that you can control? You can control the number of new jobs you apply for. You can control what your resume says by updating it and adding your new skills and updated experiences to it. You can control the networking events that you attend that are industry relevant to let your network know you are looking for exciting new opportunities.
  4. Use a worry tree. You use a nice visual to help you work through the process of identifying the worry and seeing if there is anything you can do about it. Check out this link for the visual: https://camhsprofessionals.co.uk/2020/10/10/understanding-the-worry-tree -🌍

As we get into the swing of the week, there may be a project, assignment, or other task that you have been asked to complete. Perhaps it’s different to projects you have previously undertaken? Maybe you’re a bit intimidated, even scared by the magnitude of the task?

I have just the thing for you! On today’s show, I talk to you about facing your fears around things like tasks and projects that may cause you to feel overwhelmed or afraid, and to do it anyway. Drawing on my own experiences of exactly this feeling, I take you through some tools and techniques on facing your fears, and going ahead with what you need or want to do.

I approach this topic from the perspective of facing fears through reframing your thoughts; finding the “why”, the purpose in doing the thing that is scaring you; facing fears by having SMART goals, and how you can use SMART goals to get round almost any fear that you may have on starting a new project, moving jobs, or any other life choices or dilemmas that you may be facing.

I will round off by talking about how not to face your fears: in other words, the importance of not avoiding, burying or numbing through your fears when they are causing you to have anxiety.

On today's show, I am joined once again by the beautiful Stephanie Dos Santos!

I love Stephanie so much! She has the warmest heart, intense intellectual acumen, and the deepest sense of intuition.

We are in conversation, discussing so many things, including how we can strengthen our hearts through boundary work, honouring our feelings, and stepping into the fear of self-expression. We talk about how energy works with the chemistry of our biology, and how we can adapt and change, the effects of which can even spread to how we look - all through conscious awareness! We discuss epigenetics and the prevention of disease through consciousness, and SO MUCH MORE!

I hope you love this episode!

On today’s show, I am taking a slightly different approach and speaking for less time than my usual hour long or 40-minute shows. I would like to take the opportunity of offering shorter episodes from time to time in order to give you a quick boost of positivity and energy which I hope helps to make your day more enjoyable, and a little bit better!

So, today, I am going to speak about the incredible world of Reiki healing and breath work. I will run through some of the many benefits that both of these modalities offer for our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Towards the end of the show, I take you through a quick breath work practice which I hope helps you to feel relaxed and calm.

Tune in to today’s show to hear a slightly different format where I am in conversation with the lovely Stephanie Dos Santos.

Topics:
We discuss some really juicy topics. These include:

  1. The Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine, what these energies are, what they mean, and why we should welcome them into our lives, whether you are a woman or a man.
  2. Negative self-talk, which I talk about a lot on my other shows. Listen to us discuss some of the ways in which we can become aware of our own negative internal mind chatter, and overcome it.
  3. Sex and sexuality, where we discuss why we need to be so conscious when we are exchanging such deep and intimate emotions and energy with another person.
  4. Emotional intelligence and AI, and the impacts of AI on intellectual intelligence and emotional intelligence. Listen to us talk about why we are at a crux in time where if we don’t develop our abilities to connect properly and deeply with each other, we run the risk of ending up being emotionally connected to AI in its future iterations.

On today’s show, I delve a little deeper into the topic area of overcoming challenges, which is something that came up in the interviews I conducted on last week’s show. Today, I talk more about overcoming difficulties in your lives from the perspective of having self-compassion when you are experiencing a challenging time, and from the viewpoint of not forgetting that you are not alone – all of us face tough challenges at some point in our lives.

I then discuss self-esteem – what it is, and how to identify whether you might have low self-esteem. I focus in on two of the ways in which low self-esteem can manifest – needing external approval in order to feel loved, and having negative self-talk.

Finally, I set out some solutions and ways in which you can raise your self-esteem, and I take you through a breath work meditation practice, which you can do at any time, and anywhere. I set out why focusing in on your breath can help you to raise your self-esteem.

Today I speak with Joe Chapman of the Chapman Property Group in the British Virgin Islands.

Joe was a hugely successful professional squash player, before turning his talents to the building construction industry. Joe is a keen advocate of Master Plan Communities, and is building one of the first of its kind in the British Virgin Islands.

Listen to Joe speak about his commitment to self-improvement through discipline, the ability to work really hard, and the ability to suffer. Joe also speaks of the fascinating nuances in the construction industry, including how sustainable and environmentally friendly building projects really do work through Master Plan Communities.

We discuss the effects of Hurricane Irma, how people reacted to such an immense storm, and how the experience changed Joe’s views on the world and on construction.

On today’s show, I talk about the greatest life hack – which is how learning from our past can help to shape our present, and move us towards a brighter future!

Getting into our flow can make us extremely productive. I tell a story on how not being in our flow can stop us from being the best version of ourselves, and I look at some activities in which we can participate to get us into our flow.

Exploring the past can help us to move away from dysfunctional behavior patterns that may be holding us back in our lives. By introducing self-awareness around these issues, we can start unravelling these patterns.

The stories and narratives that we may be telling ourselves about our past situations can actually end up holding us back. Listen out for the pointers I give on how to turn those narratives around into something more positive. I provide you with my 4-steps on how we can re-write the stories that we have told ourselves.

Getting nostalgic over past events that we enjoyed in our lives can help us to learn about ourselves, and can help to shape our present day lives.

I touch on the benefits of mindfulness and being present, as a way of building a brighter future, and I conclude with some ways in which we can build a brighter and more satisfying future for ourselves.

Today, I will again be talking to you about ways in which you can get to your life’s purpose. And about how to have fun along the way! So, let’s do this!

Doing what you loved in childhoodcan be a step towards finding purpose. It’s by getting back into those activities that gave us joy, and put us in a state of bliss as kids, that we may get closer to finding our purpose.

Quietening the mind is also a wonderful way to create those gaps between our thoughts where true inspiration and Eureka moments can come! Quietening the mind can also cause us to become more aware of thoughts that make us feel discomfort. But by feeling the discomfort, and by sitting with it, we can work towards dealing with those uncomfortable thoughts and start to work through them.

Another, more activity-based way of finding your purpose, is to look at the kinds of activities that have been trying to get out of you. By exploring the activities or projects that you started some time ago, that for some reason, you have not finished, you may find that you are in process. Maybe the thoughts and feelings you currently have, and the activities you find yourself drawn to are currently the part of you that is birthing your purpose.

Another practical way in which we can tap into our purpose is to free write, or do some free writing. Free writing is a writing strategy, which is similar to, but not the same as brainstorming or journaling. You write whatever comes into your mind, and do so without pausing for thought, and without over-thinking.

Follow your intuition – without compromise. The more you follow your intuition, the more it will guide you. It’s a bit like using a map. In the words of Jonas Salk, the American virologist and medical researcher, who invented one of the first successful Polio vaccines: “Intuition, will tell the thinking mind, where to look next.”

And you should take a listen to Ed Mylett talk about what he calls “touching the dream”! The link to The Ed Mylett Show is in the notes below.

And finally, whatever you do, please enjoy the journey my friends!

I take a very deep dive into my experiences of Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands in 2017, and the aspects of those experiences which caused me to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is a condition that some, but not all, people develop after experiencing or witnessing a distressing or life-threatening event or injury.

I discuss some of the symptoms that someone with PTSD may experience. I also discuss some of the additional symptoms that I had further to the storm.

Finally, I explore some case studies of others who experienced PTSD, and I talk about some of the ways in which treatment and recovery may be sought.

Further to your feedback, today, I am back, just me, talking to you about some of my recent experiences which I hope will help you to navigate what may be happening in your lives right now.

My focus today is preparing ourselves for the new! I look into the benefits of having a re-set, and taking short breaks. I also discuss what we can do to get back on the wagon of our goals when stuff happens to cause us to fall off the wagon.

Mind over matter is a real thing! Neuroplasticity of the brain supports and even creates our goals – our brain – quite literally – has the ability to conspire with us to help us to attain our goals.

My final thoughts are centred around goal setting in the context of finding our purpose – something I have talked about before – and something that is core to our existence.

On today's episode, I am a guest on Robert Lynch's AMAZING new show: "The Wrecking Trade". In this show, Robert provides a deeper understanding of the issues that are important to men.

Robert's very first episode explores the topic of what driven professional women are looking for in a relationship.

Hear me talk about how in this modern era of greater gender equality, in many parts of the world, we are provided with a WONDERFUL opportunity, never seen before in modern times, for men and women to grow together - emotionally, spiritually, meaningfully. To not do so, is a HUGE missed opportunity!

Today’s show is about the impacts of social exclusion on mental health and why diversity should be celebrated. I will discuss the toll of exclusion on the grounds of race and of gender. One of the ways I propose in which we may be more socially inclusive, is by refusing to “other” another due to feeling threatened by another’s differences.

Instead, if we hold an unshakeable self-belief, nothing can threaten us. I suggest ways in which we may all build self-belief. These include finding out what we are good at by taking the DiSC Test, eliminating negative behaviours we identify in ourselves, certain alternative behaviours to those we may currently have, our postural tendencies, and how by being successful we can gain self-belief.

Finally, I talk about how to deal with social exclusion if you find yourself on the receiving end of it. Some of these methods include having a mental health check-in buddy, keeping showing up, building resilience, leaning on support groups and having practices that help us to remain calm in the face of exclusion and discrimination.

On today’s show I talk about some of the mental health issues that may affect us at Easter time and during the holidays in general, and I discuss what we can do to help ourselves with these. I also discuss Easter being a time of resurrection, renewal, rebirth, and hope.

Those of you who listened to my Christmas Special on setting intentions, will know that I spoke then about having weekly or monthly check-ins with where you are with intentions. For those of you for whom the intentions may have slipped away, or maybe you are now thinking about new goals, I take you through a step-by-step exercise to help you with those goals and intentions.

I then discuss using any fears you may have around an issue, as fuel. I’ll be talking about using fear as fuel for making changes, and for setting new intentions, either because you didn’t get round to it at the end of last year, or because, having set intentions for yourself then, you realised that those weren’t the right ones for you, and you’re looking for something new to work on.

And what’s most exciting is that we are going to be getting creative together!

Before you start listening, I want you to grab two pieces of paper, and a pen or pencil, and we are going to make something for ourselves today!

I bring you a Valentine’s Love Special today! I talk to you about love in the context of self-love, self-compassion and gratitude. I also touch on romantic love, and I talk about how the ego affects our ability to receive and to give love.

By giving ourselves love and compassion, we allow ourselves to step closer to being love as a state. We get to love as a state of being by practising self-compassion and self-love.

I discuss the benefits of opening our heart chakras, and offer ways in which we can do this. I also take you through a heart opening guided meditation.

Today I talk to you in the context of recently published statistics surrounding mental health that are directly impacting the Cayman Islands, and beyond, with recently published statistics relating to mental health also published in the US and in the UK.

2021 witnessed a 72% increase on 2020 in the number of people who attempted to take their own lives in the Cayman Islands. Similarly worrying figures have come out of the US and the UK. In the US, 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year. 1 in 20 US adults experience serious mental illness each year. 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 14. 75% of lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 24.

Meanwhile, almost 7,000 people in the Cayman Islands were diagnosed with anxiety or depression in 2021, which equates to almost 10% of the entire population of the islands.

I discuss what we can all do as a community to reduce these numbers, including:

  1. Educating ourselves and our kids to identify the signs and symptoms of mental illness or of there being a mental health issue, either in ourselves, or someone else.
  2. Participating in or volunteering at events in the community that work towards raising awareness around mental health, or creating an event of our own to raise funds for a local mental health charity.
  3. Teaching school aged people about the importance of caring for their mental health.

I discuss accounts of some of the most common mental illnesses, including post-partum depression, anxiety and depression. I also give an account of my personal experience of suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), further to being in the British Virgin Islands in 2017 when Hurricane Irma made landfall.

I explore what employers and health insurance companies can do to protect and maintain the mental health of the workforce. I discuss productivity and how countries such as The Netherlands, which has some of the most robust and comprehensive legislation protecting workers’ mental health, also has one of the highest productivity rates of the OECD countries.

Finally, I talk about some of the things that we can do ourselves to reduce our stress levels, thereby protecting our own mental health.

On today’s show I review five of my favourite books that I have read in the last few years. The start of the year is a great time to get going on a reading list! The five books that I discuss are:

  1. The Power of the Heart, by Baptist de Pape
  2. The Body Keeps The Score, by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk
  3. Being Ram Dass, by Ram Dass and Rameshwar Das
  4. Discover Your Dharma, by Sahara Rose; and
  5. Make Your Bed, by Admiral William H. McRaven

Baptist de Pape’s The Power of the Heart is a beautiful short book providing a superb compilation of spiritual teachers’ teachings, containing excerpts of some of the great guidance they have spoken over the years. It’s a great introductory book for anyone wishing to become more spiritual, for anyone seeking out their purpose in life, or for anyone wishing to be more present in the here and now.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk in his ground breaking book The Body Keeps The Score, provides an engaging and illuminating account of his professional experience in treating trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Whilst this might seem like a science textbook, it is anything but a specialist science book. The author seamlessly weaves together the science behind trauma and PTSD, and recovery from trauma and PTSD, with well-narrated stories of his patients’ journeys, and their road to treatment for trauma and PTSD.

Being Ram Dass, by Ram Dass and Rameshwar Das depicts the colourful and full life of Richard Alpert, who became Ram Dass. His was a life fully lived, enjoyed and experienced. The book describes the story of a man who was completely unafraid of taking chances, and completely unafraid of following his convictions. Ram Dass is perhaps most well-known for reminding us all to “Be Here Now”; to be present and in the moment. This account extols the benefits of having practises such as yoga and meditation, and how through those practises, we move from living from our minds, to living from our hearts – how we can all move to being love as a state of being.

In Discover Your Dharma, Sahara Rose, who is an Ayurvedic author, and hosts a podcast called The Highest Self, shows us how to discover our dharma, which is our life’s purpose. Sahara Rose has a unique approach on how we find our true life’s purpose, or our dharma. She invites us to discover our dharma through our Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Doshas are the Ayurvedic mind-body types. The author has teased out the traits of each dosha, based on the Ayurvedic elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth), and she has devised a quiz comprising multiple choice questions. The answers to those questions get us closer to knowing our dharma.

Admiral William H. McRaven in Making Your Bed, provides ten principles he learned during his Navy SEAL training that have helped him to overcome challenges, in both his professional and personal life. The book expands upon Admiral McRaven’s inspirational speech with the same title delivered at the 2014 Commencement Address at the University of Texas at Austin.

Today’s show explores the topic of change. I discuss how we can navigate and come to terms with situations in our lives where a change is forced upon us; for example due to being dumped by a love interest, made redundant from a job, served notice by a landlord, or when our kids grow up and move out of the family home.

I also discuss:
- how to approach change when it is our choice to make a change, such as to move house or country;
- tips we can all follow in any circumstance of change;
- areas where we should invite in change; and
- how to approach the situation of when we feel in our gut that we must make a change in our lives.

By what I call activating abundance, we can learn to embrace change. We do this by taking the focus off the change, and instead switching our perspective to note the things for which we are grateful. This causes our spirit to start to lift immediately, which is really useful when navigating change.

I discuss how we can have a “pre-prepared” story that we can tell to people when asked about a change that is going on in our lives, especially when that change feels uncomfortable to us, and when we may not wish to discuss our situation in public.

When the change in our lives is one of choice, we may still experience an element of fear, but we can use that fear as fuel, for example, giving us the energy to create a business plan.

Finally, I talk about how to get around negative and blocking thoughts.

On today’s show I discuss setting our intentions in the context of the New Year of 2023. The essence of intention setting is something that we can work on throughout the year, and doesn’t have to be restricted by time to just a New Year.

The Christmas and New Year’s period does however provide a good time to cleanse out the old, and make space for the new. I discuss how positive changes can be introduced into our lives by taking small, incremental steps towards our goals. Goals can also be achieved by building on existing practises. I talk about how we may want to use our existing hobbies and passions to foster and grow new skills.

I invite you to see, sense and feel yourself achieving your goals and aims, and discuss creating a vision board as a way of accomplishing this.

I talk about abandoning negative self-talk on our journey to achieving our aims in life, and how by having gratitude, we can shift any stuck energies, and we can really start to see positive changes coming into our lives.

I describe ceremonial ways of releasing the old, in order to make space for the new, and offer a mantra in aid of this. For the more practically minded, I invite you to make a “You Plan”, which is a bit like a business plan, but is a plan centred around you, and what you want to achieve.

I conclude with some of the unnecessary things that might be in our lives, which are time-zappers, and which may be stopping us from focusing on and achieving our goals.

Sit back, grab a journal, listen, and start setting your intentions. Enjoy!

On today’s show, I talk about the benefits of going on a retreat, and the joy that we can experience from being in a retreat space. When recording this show, I had just returned from an amazing retreat experience in Costa Rica, at Blue Spirit Costa Rica where I was taught and guided by Paul Selig, a psychic, teacher and award-winning author.

I discuss the importance of self-care and talk about how at its core, the word “retreat” means to withdraw, to move back. Going on a retreat provides space in which to retreat from our daily lives. It is not to escape or deny our daily lives. On the contrary, going into a retreat space is to give ourselves the opportunity to open up, to make better space for our daily lives, and it provides an opportunity for self-improvement and self-care.

I talk about the retreats that I have been on at the Omega Institute in upstate New York; a nature retreat in the Hoh Rainforest in Washington State; Blue Spirit Costa Rica; retreats in the Cayman Islands with Authentic You Retreats; and numerous online retreats, including with Deepak Chopra.

In the context of Costa Rica, which is a Blue Zone country, I discuss longevity and steps we can take to enjoy healthy longevity.

With each retreat I have attended, I feel a sense of spiritual growth and personal development.

If you’re thinking of going on your first retreat, I really hope that this show provides guidance for you.

In this show I talk about ways of helping a friend or relative suffering with PTSD. I discuss some of the symptoms to look out for in your friend or relative.

I explore things that you can do to help them cope with their symptoms. These include providing your friend or relative with support; allowing them to talk about their experiences when they are ready; providing a safe and secure environment for your friend or relative; helping them to build routine and find stability; how to anticipate and understand triggers; and the importance of being tactful.

I talk about some of my personal stories from Hurricane Irma related to having to leave my pets behind, how I coped with that, and how due to the overwhelming generosity of others, my cats and I were reunited in the most extraordinary of circumstances.

I also discuss the importance of looking after yourself and your own mental health when looking after a friend or relative with PTSD.

Today, I discuss the powerful teachings embodied in Don Miguel Ruiz’s acclaimed book, The Four Agreements, which is a Toltec Wisdom Book.

I talk about what Ruiz means by “Agreements”, which is broadly, the self-limiting beliefs that we hold about ourselves, and about events that happen in our lives. These can be self-limiting beliefs that are sometimes buried deep within us. Ruiz describes in The Four Agreements how those self-limiting beliefs come from “agreements” that we have made with ourselves due to what we have been taught, often as children, by our care-givers, teachers and society. Ruiz states that these internal self-beliefs that many of us hold are agreements that go against ourselves.

By making new agreements with ourselves, we open ourselves up to the possibilities of receiving and experiencing joy and happiness, and of there being less suffering in our experience of life.

The Four Agreements are:

  1. Be impeccable with your word.
  2. Don’t take anything personally.
  3. Don’t make assumptions.
  4. Always do your best.

I then take you through some of the suggestions made by psychologist and author, Ethan Kross in his book Chatter, where he provides a toolkit to deal with and stop negative internal mind chatter. By stopping internal negative self-talk, we give ourselves the opportunity of being able to put into place Ruiz’s teachings in The Four Agreements. I truly believe that Ruiz’s book provides us with a really good starting block from where we can start to transcend our egos. And once the ego has been transcended, we start to live in a more fulfilled way, and we start to live from a place of love.

On today’s show, I discuss the power of language in a number of different contexts.

The very fact that “mental health” is a term of phrase separate to “physical health”, tells us that one’s mind and spirit is seen as something other than the physical body, something other than the whole person. Changing some of the loaded terms around health, and in particular around “mental health” allows us to take some of the judgment out of health conditions, allowing us to see the person and the spirit of that person as a whole being.

I discuss language and self-talk and how negative internal mind chatter has a bigger impact on our state of mind than we may realise. I take you through ways in which we may change the negative internal chatter to positive self-talk.

I also take you through a guided visualization journey where I invite you to visualise and live your greatest dream, including some cool, buzzy affirmations that you can use in your daily life.

On today’s show, I discuss ways in which we can all find our true purpose in life. I talk about how in those quiet moments in our lives, whether that’s achieved through meditation or perhaps being out in Nature, we quieten our minds. In the words of Eckhart Tolle, those quiet moments allow us to “experience with increasing frequency the joy of perceiving with little or no interference of thinking”. By quieting our minds, we invite in our true essence, which leads us to finding our life’s true purpose.

Another way to discover our life’s purpose is to explore what we enjoy doing and what we are good at. The DISC method provides a great way to explore this, and I take you through the DISC personality test and how it can be helpful to you.

I invite you to get creative as a way of finding your purpose. I also take you through steps on how to “Activate Abundance” as another way towards finding your life’s purpose.

On this show, I discuss stress management, giving you some great tools to help manage stress in an increasingly busy society where output and productivity are often valued above the person.

And, I take you through a guided meditation in this episode.

On my first episode of Shuvra Deb: With You, I discuss my devastating experience of going through Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record to make landfall, which hit the British Virgin Islands on 6 September 2017. The experience led me to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for over a year before I realised that I had PTSD.

I describe some of the dire situations we found ourselves in during this mammoth storm and how we dealt with those live or death moments.

I then go on to talk about how essential it is that we all confront, deal with and start to heal from mental illness and trauma.

Come join my journey!
