On this episode, I have fellow expat Alyssa Brown joining me to talk about her life here in China and some of the things that she's learned over the past few years, particularly as she is about to celebrate her fifth anniversary in the country.

Alyssa is an English teacher and a small business owner here in Beijing. She is the owner of Brownie Bites, a business she runs in her spare time when she’s not teaching. She is known for her baked goods, many of which you can’t find very easily here in the country. In this episode we talk a little bit about what it's been like to run a business while working a full time job, and some of the things she’s learned from the experience, and what she’s learned about China, the language and the people in her time here.

This episode does have one or two places where the audio stutters due to a poor internet connection, but I think the message still gets through.

The show notes and contact info for Alyssa are available on my website, stevensirski.com, and of course you can stream this on all the major platforms. Thanks for listening, we’ll do this again!

Brad Seippel aka thruoutin, an American-born electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist, joins the podcast today. He’s been in China for over fifteen years and now runs his own studio here in Beijing. But when he’s not helping other people record their own music, he is recording and producing his own work that he has toured the world with.

In this episode we talk a little about what it’s like to run a studio here in China, some of the highlights of the work and how it has forced Brad to grow as a musician and business owner.

Not only that, Brad is fluent in Mandarin Chinese having learned the language largely on his own using the street method after arriving in the country way back in 2008. We talk about how he managed to learn the language, some of the struggles he encountered and what kept him going.

This Episode features award-winning, Kazakhstan-based Director of Photography, Aigul Nurbulatova. Recorded between filmmaking stints, Aigul was back in Kazakhstan preparing for her next feature film to be shot in Turkey as her most recent feature, In Flames, directed by Zarrar Khan, is making its way through. The film has already had its European premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is set to have its North American premiere at TIFF 2023.

In this episode we talk about Aigul's early work in Kazakhstan, including her entry into film school at university both in Kazakhstan and in South Korea, and how she would eventually land her first feature film job. From there, she would begin working not just in her home country but also travel overseas for more work and festival experience.

The shows caps off with a question about some of Aigul's own language education and how she is able to work on international shoots and what Kazakhstan is like as a tourist destination.

Joel JP Passante joins me on this episode to talk about an eclectic bunch of retro knowledge he has gained over the years. Joining me today is Song, a Beijing-based producer who is in charge of hiring all that talent you see in those commercials you try to skip!

It's not an industry that receives the same glitz and glam as the big movies, but she is busy, profitable, and looking for talent. In this episode we talk about how Song got her start in the industry, some of the missteps she's had, and what she sees both for her production company and her new family going forward.

Clocking in at just under three hours, this episode will be of interest to those in China who might be looking for a career change (or side gig) and for those outside of China who are interested in how things work here.

Latin as a Second Language? How so?

Calling in from around the USA, this episode features a trio who are sparking life in what many would consider to be a dead language.

Andrew Morehouse, Ilse van Rooyan, and Claire Mieher make up part of the team that run Latinitas Animi Causa, a website and social media channel that uses spoken Latin for everyday things. They teach, learn and use spoken Latin in their podcasts and live streams, often while playing video games!

This episode features discussions about the current state of Latin as a language, how the LAC team approaches the use of Latin (particularly in modern usage), and how the language has seen a bit of a rejuvenation over the last ten years as social media and internet technology has made things a lot easier to communicate. We even discuss whether or not English can be considered a "lingua franca", a question that I've been talking about for a while.

Another episode and another expat! Hailing from Illinois, USA but now situated in Beijing, China (with an epidemic thrown in to keep things structured), Tatiana McLaurin joins me on the podcast today to talk about life in the 'Jing, podcasting and blogging, several social issues she's involved with and what's in store for the future.

This episode we dive into quite a bit about life in Beijing and how things have evolved over the last few years, especially since Tatiana only arrived in 2019. However, she's been busy and making the best of her time as she started her own podcast back in August 2020. Using her voice and background, she is now shedding light on several major social issues while living here in China.

Clocking in at just over two hours, this episode contains a few follow up book and movie suggestions people can take a look at to gain a better understanding of the world landscape, particularly in the USA.

My guest today is compadre now former colleague here in Beijing Octavio Araujo as he gets set to return to the USA after years of being in China. Concluding a 27-year interest in the country and the Chinese culture, Octavio is going back to the States to follow yet another career path, one that takes him out of the classroom and possibly into the courtroom.

In this episode we talk about the highlight and lowlights of working China, the language and culture, and some of the things he's learned from his time here in the county.

This is a long one having been aided by a few bottles of wine, familiarity, and the simple fact that, as an expat, you never know when you're going to meet again.

Returning guest David Horton is back for another yikyak as it’s been over a year since he’s been on and a lot has happened… though much has stayed the same.

In this episode we talk about the arts scene in Beijing and how David weathered this year’s lockdown of his compound and surrounding areas. Even more excitingly, we also discuss David’s biggest accomplishment to date: he published a book! Maze Poems is now out on Arteidolia Press and consists of 50-pages of engaging poetry that David wrote over the last four years. The poems are constructed as mazes, much like a search-a-word, and require the reader to literally move the book around to follow along.

This episode I talk to another expat but someone who, like many others these days, is departing China. Omar Badr hails from Egypt and has been in China for the last three years living and working but sadly not travelling as much as he wanted to. We sit down to talk quite a bit about his home country and some of the ways that China has developed in a different fashion. We discuss a little bit about the some of the things that Omar was able to do while in the country and what he would have liked to do if he had the chance.

This episode will appeal to those who want to learn about the histories of China and Egypt and how their choices to develop have led to some successes and failures along the way. And for those of you considering coming to China, Omar’s “short” stay may be something to consider.

This episode another fellow expat, but this one is a known a bit around the foreigner circles that remain. One half of the Date Night China podcast team, Rachel Weiss, joins me to =day to talk about life here in China, what brought her here in the first place so many years ago, and how the idea for a “Date night” podcast came about. Her podcast has struck a chord with those expats who are left as it’s one of the few teams that is still putting on events around the cities for people to meet and greet.

In addition to Date Night China (datenightchinacom.wordpress.com), Rachel can be found on YouTube with her own travel vlog, Rachel Meets China.

Ever thought you could be a voice over artist in a foreign country? Kei Gambit didn’t either. But that’s what he does now in Beijing.

This episode is one of the funniest as I have musician, comedian and voice over artist Kei Gambit with me today. Like most expats we talk about what brought him to China in the first place and what has kept him here for nine years so far. How is his Chinese? Non existent because he’s plenty busy with work, ranging from teaching to doing voice work for major motion pictures and TV shows here in China.

Download this episode and listen on the go as this one is funny and informative to those thinking about some alternative careers in this day and age and what it takes to make it.

You can follow Kei on Instagram and Douyin (in China).

Interpreter, translator and teacher Qian Wang joins me today to talk about her work with languages. Having grown up going through the Chinese education system, Qian was exposed to English at a very early age and has gone onto become an interpreter between her native Mandarin Chinese and English. She has also had the chance to study overseas (in Sweden) but has opted to learn another language instead. In this episode we talk quite a bit about what it takes to learn a language, how best to approach studying them, and how to find work after you’ve developed proficiency.

Comedy lives in Beijing!

This Episode, recorded on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, sees me sit down with writer and comedian Donnie Fan. A self-described “mixed blood of Chinese descent” hailing from New York, Donnie has found a new home here in Beijing China. Fresh off of the production of his first tragedy, Medea, based on the play by Euripides, Donnie is now focusing his efforts of developing his own hour-long stand up routine which he plans to take across the country. Here we talk about what it’s like to live in Beijing and China, how long we’ve each been here (very similar!), what keeps us here and what Donnie wants to work on going forward. This is a funny one as Donnie has plenty of stories to share about his life here in China!

You can find Donnie on several Chinese social media outlets including Weibo and WeChat in addition to the usual Western social media outlets, including Instagram and Facebook. Or get in touch with Donnie through his website, donniefan.com.

This episode has another band joining me, The New Age of Decay. The band / project is made up of Michael Burton, aka NotAnotherPoet, and Dann Gaymer, aka The Slow Blade. They join me online as Michael has recently returned to the UK while Dann and I are still in Beijing.

The band is a collaboration between the two who met through literary circles here in Beijing. Combining the slam poetry of Michael Burton with the techno, sample-influenced beats of Dann Gaymer, the project stands as a testament to the creative work that can emerge despite a global pandemic. Whether this project remains a one off or is to be continued, either online or in person, remains to be seen.

In this episode we talk what life is like being an expat in China and what it’s like to hold down full time jobs while pursuing one’s creative endeavours. While Michael uses the pen and paper method, Dann takes to the road on an often gruelling touring schedule. In this episode you’ll also hear just how close things were to not happening as the choices that everyone made prior to the full-on pandemic influenced what they were able, and not able, to do in the last year and a half.

You’ll also hear about some of the other travels the two have done prior to landing in China, and what sort of advice they’d give to people who are thinking of living and working overseas and how having a passion project can be a good outlet, and connection, with your surroundings.

To find The New Age of Decay’s album and links to their other projects, visit https://daftpop.bandcamp.com/album/new-age-of-decay, or head over to YouTube to see their music video for their song, “Quarantine”.

If you’re on Facebook and part of the Ukrainian diaspora, you’ve no doubt come across a page called Forgotten Galicia. That account, and its primary website, ForgottenGalicia.com, is run by Areta Kovalska, my guest on today’s episode. A US expat living in Lviv, Ukraine, Areta had arrived roughly around the same time I was in the country but ended up staying much longer.

As war-torn as Ukraine is represented in the media, Areta talks about what it’s like to live in Lviv, which is located in the Western part of Ukraine, closer to Poland. As a part of the diaspora, Areta shares her story of how she has wanted to live in Ukraine for a very long time but it wasn’t until 2010 that she made the decision to make the move.

Areta runs a website ForgottenGalicia.com, on which she posts about the history, culture, language and people of what was the former Austrian Empire and is now Western Ukraine. I encourage you to take a look at what she has published as she provides a lot of information for people who may be interested in researching their ancestry. She has a few links on her website to people and services that can help you trace your lineage.

This is a shorter episode as it only runs a couple of hours so it should fit within a commute or two!

A returning guest! He’s alive! He’s not in America! He’s in… WHERE?!

Without fail this is a good conversation but, as it had to happen, not without some political discussion. I encourage you to give it a listen as the political yik yak is interweaved with the real gold nuggest throughout the conversation.

Denny is no longer in the US, but I’ll let you listen to find out where he is right now (and that might change in another few months). All of that means that he is travelling and has seen what is happening around the world in these troubled times. He has a ground’s eye view of what’s going on and gives us some info how things are shaping up outside of the States.

A decent length this time, just under three hours, well worth the listen if you want to know more about what it’s like to travel internationally during a pandemic, what to look for in a business venture, and what course people should steer if they’re looking to acquire residence in another country.

Enjoy!

This week I have another guest from my hometown of Winnipeg, Father Jay Korban.

Newly ordained and now overseeing a dozen parishes in the rural areas of Manitoba, Father Korban and I talk about his journey into the priesthood and how it’s been a life calling. We talk a lot about growing up and experiencing different parts of Canada, particularly Winnipeg and Ottawa (we even come up with an idea for how Winnipeg can solve its flooded river-walkway!) and talk a lot about Jay’s experience in the Ottawa seminary, that is, school for future priests.

This is probably one of the best conversations I’ve had as it is probably the most informative and real-world talk about Catholicism, the Church, the life of a priest, and the role of faith in the world. I don’t let Jay off the hook very easily in this and I bring up a lot of questions and concerns that I myself have encountered over the years and throughout my travels. Everything from the more serious questions of what do priest’s do, the meaning of the Bible, and what if God was/is an alien to what make a priest laugh and what music do they listen to after a day of work?

This episode you have to listen to in its entirety. I hesitate making show notes for this one because I think it is that important to listen to what is said. That being the case, to make it easier on you I can say that the first 40 minutes or so is us talking about life around Canada and then we switch to more of about Fr. Korban’s entry into and graduation from the seminary.

You can get in touch in Father Jay Korban through his parish’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/rossburn.ugcc. And, as always, let me know what you think, tweet or email me @THEStevenSirski.

This week I bring on another fellow expat here in Beijing and we talk a lot about what life is like in China both now and when he first came over over a decade ago. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, David is a writer and editor now based in Beijing, China and is an active participant in the arts community. In this episode David shares stories of living and travelling throughout the USA and China and some of the changes he’s seen over the last twenty years.

Also in the ESL industry, we talk about the current state of the industry and whether or not it’s a good idea for people to go overseas to teach these days. We also talk a lot about learning languages as we share a common challenge of currently learning Mandarin Chinese.

Some of the artists and creative types Dave mentions throughout the podcast:

  • Poets: Carl Sandburg, Wallace Stevens, Ezra Pound, John Berryman
  • Bands: The Mendoza Line, Black Flag, The Stooges, (maybe) Vladimir’s Universe
  • Chinese bands: Carsick Cars, Brain Failure, New Age of Decay
  • Rappers: Jackson Turner (RIP)
  • Gamelon guy: Lou Harrison
  • Artist/musician: Matthew Lusk (he has my 1983 drum machine)

This week I have David Zellis on my show, a guy I’ve known for quite some time. He used to work for the Winnipeg Film Group and that’s where our paths initially crossed. Since then he’s taken on other assignments as a filmmaker and film producer and now makes up one half of Zellco Entertainment, a movie production company that he runs with fellow filmmaker, Craig Guiboche.

In this episode we talk a lot about making movies and how the industry has changed over the last twenty years and the services that David’s entertainment company offers. We also touch on the current use of social media both for business and meeting people (ie, online dating… David shares a recent experience interacting with what seems to be a chatbot, but we’re not too sure). And then finally, as seems to be the norm for these times, we also talk about how the Coronavirus pandemic is affecting Winnipeg.

SHOW NOTES TO FOLLOW!

For more info on Zellco Entertainment or to get in touch with David go to zellcoentertainment.com.

FINAL NOTE: If you’d like a further connection between me and David’s work, search for the short film Bunky Blum and the Talking Train, a movie I worked on when I was still in Winnipeg!

I’ve known John for over a decade now since we met in South Korea when we both first started teaching. We were part of the same intake of ESL teachers into the South Korean government’s EPIK program that brought teachers from around the world into the country and were both sent to Busan to teach. Aside from teaching, we were both a part of the music scene in Busan, but it wasn’t until after the first year in the country that John would start his latest music project, The Defector Frequency, with another ESL teacher, Stu.

As the years passed, John has travelled throughout southeast Asia, stopping in Thailand to teacher for a year, back to England to complete his PGCE, and then, finally, over to Japan before the pandemic hit.

We reminisce a little bit about our times in South Korea, what it’s like to be an expat ESL teacher, and how it’s possible to keep the music dream alive even though travel takes us away from where we grew up. We also discuss the current pandemic situation as it unfolded across the world, particularly in our respective countries , Japan and England for John, and China for me.

We had a few technical difficulties towards the later part of the recording but, other than a few edits and stitches to make sure the audio sounds good, the whole interview is there. I hope you find it useful!

Today’s episode features Anna Bass, a lady I met just before I left for China. We were both in Montreal for a month working on our CELTAs after which I was scheduled to go to China while she was to remain in North America and start up her own business. We had a chance to catch up and talk about how things have gone since our course together.

Anna isn’t just an ESL teacher. We initially got talking about movies and filmmaking during which I learned that she has several film credits to her name, including Generation P, a feature film based on Viktor Pelevin’s book of the same name, and Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan. She has a bit of a knack for languages as not only speaks Russian and English, but she also studied Chinese while living in China for a year. She was studying French when we met while in Montreal.

Today’s guest is a running coach, personal trainer and performance enhancement specialist, Liubov got in touch through a mutual friend and wanted to share her story with how she moved to the US and changed her life for the better by doing something so simple: running.

We exchanged emails a few times before we finally set a time to talk. I only found out during our talk that she hails from Ukraine so we were able to talk about that a little bit before we got into her current occupation as a running coach. We discuss her move from Ukraine to the US and how she finally was able to conquer her dislike of running.

Liubov shares her frustrations in getting going, what she learned throughout the process, and where her training is at now.

This is a great episode if you’re interested in what it’s like for someone to relocate from another country to the US and, moreover, how Liubov came to enjoy running so much these days.

It’s pretty common while travelling to meet some interesting “characters”. Some you want to meet again, others you wish go away and are never seen again. My guest today, Denny Goin, belongs in the former category of people who you meet and you know is a bit of a character, but not in a bad way at all. He introduced me to the idea of buying gold and that it’s even possible to move to an island in the south Pacific. Sound crazy? That’s only some of the things we talked about in this episode. I highly recommend you listen to the whole thing as you’ll get the whole intonation and meaning of what the conversation consists of.

This week’s episode features another friend here in Beijing, Natalya Ba. She has been in China for 9 years originally to study Chinese Medicine and then stayed on to work and to study the Chinese language.

**You’ll note that I make a bit of mix up with the episode numbers right at the beginning of the episode. That is because last week I actually had recorded another episode with another person but technology did not let us save that one. So, we’ve arranged to record again sometime in the near future.

Also, you’ll hear a bit of background noise from outside. Since I recorded this with one microphone and didn’t want it to be too intrusive in the conversation, I placed it a bit further back to record. I’m sure you can bear the few times it pops up.

In a manner of speaking, this episode has been twenty years in the making.

Today’s episode takes me back to the time when I was a rock drummer in Winnipeg, Canada. I have with me today two friends and bandmates from that time, Steve Baria and Stephen F, who were the guys I first played with in a band that actually played somewhere other than the house. Today, after a bit of catching up between me and Stephen F, who left Winnipeg about a month before I did, and a bit of a talk about what it’s like to raise a child, we then get into the very big heart of what today’s episode is all about: listening to our old recordings and commenting on how they came together, were put together, and ultimately, what they meant then and now.

This episode is probably the longest to date but I don’t think it’s a problem given the ability to easily skip ahead. It can, however, be separated into a few parts:

Part 1: Introductions and Hellos and… how to raise a child

Part 2: Jellybean Single

Part 3: Life After… EP

Had a burst of inspiration last week and reached out to a fellow Twitter-er by the name of Hikosaemon. He agreed to be on my podcast and this is the result!

Hikosaemon has been in Japan for over 22 years and hosts his own news show live on YouTube every Sunday night at 10.30 pm Japan Standard Time. Other than his news show, he hosts other videos and blogs, makes his own music, and maintains a constant presence on Twitter. Today we were able to sit down and talk about life in Japan and China, what it’s like to learn Japanese and Chinese, and a few other things about living as an expat.

This is a shorter show, clocking in at around 71 minutes so I hope you enjoy!

This week I have another guest and friend from here in Beijing. He’s a self-described rather “unremarkable man” but has done something remarkable during the COVID-19 lockdown: he’s watched a lot of movies. One a day… for the last six months.

Today we Zoom together (because we got rained out in Beijing) and talk about moving to China, life as an ESL teacher, movies and what makes them good or bad. It’s a comical conversation that I’m sure you’ll derive all sorts of pop culture factoids that you can use to impress your friends (or get out of fights) and even add to your movie watch list.

Enjoy!

Recorded Thursday, July 16, 2020.

Journalist Chen Caiwei joins me today on the show to discuss everything from learning another language, dating and matching with people on Tinder (and how bad conversational techniques are used to learn a language), music and culture both in China and abroad, and life as a student overseas and a lot more!

I’ll let you read through the show notes to see some of the topics we cover and the conversation does get intense at times. It’s not just debate, Caiwei provides some perspectives on modern Chinese culture and good information for Chinese students who are living overseas who might be feeling a little bit alienated in their new surroundings.

This week’s guest (my second!) is a friend from my hometown, Winnipeg, Canada! Jake Sacher has over 20 years of experience in the music industry and now runs his own studio. In this episode we talk about the technology, working in the studio, the current music scene, how things have changed, how the internet changed things for everyone, and Jake’s advice for musicians who want to make a career in the music industry. Hope you enjoy!

(We had some issues with Zoom before we going going but we got it sorted and everything went well after that!)

Recorded on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Forbidden City Studios in Beijing, China.

This week’s episode features my first guest! Former colleague and good friend Steve Blaque has been in China for nearly 20 years. A singer songwriter and recently and now retired, he agreed to sit down with me for a rather lengthy conversation about music and life in China.

This conversation went on a lot longer than both of us expected but, instead of cutting it down, I’ve left just about all of it in and made notes of key points throughout the interview so you can skip through the parts you’re not interested in. Parts of the conversation get really technical about music production so it’s understandable if some people want to skip past those parts but I leave it in because I know a few people who would’ve loved to have the opportunity to sit down and hear how this guy works as a musician.

The interview can be broken into two main parts: music and audio production and life in China.
