In this episode of Sage Studio, Tiffiny Webster sits down with Lana Beshara, Principal of Virtual Learning Academy (VLA), to discuss the incredible growth and success of the program. With over 600 students, VLA offers a unique virtual learning experience that goes beyond just online classes. Lana shares how they prioritize creating a sense of community and connection among students by organizing field trips and offline activities.
From the very beginning, VLA had the vision of providing students with a different kind of virtual learning experience. They wanted to ensure that students not only had access to virtual curriculum and textbooks but also had the opportunity for hands-on learning with labs and projects. This approach has allowed students to have a more well-rounded educational experience, fostering connections with their peers and the real world.
VLA organizes field trips for the entire school once a month, giving students the chance to not only meet each other in person but also experience real-life learning opportunities. As the program grew, they started adding grade-level field trips to further foster connections within specific classes. Now, students have the opportunity to participate in two grade-level field trips and one all-school field trip, totaling 12 different experiences throughout the year.
These field trips have become the highlight of each month for VLA students. It's a time for them to see their friends, connect offline, and truly feel like they are part of a community. The grade-level field trips allow for more personalized connections, as students are able to interact with their own class in a more intimate setting. The all-school field trips expose students to different college and career opportunities, such as visiting the Pantages theater for a performance or attending a Clippers game.
What sets VLA field trips apart is their focus on relevance to what students are learning in class. The trips are tied to grade-level standards, providing students with a hands-on, real-world experience that complements their curriculum. For example, during a trip to Knott's Berry Farm, students can explore concepts of force and motion, bringing their classroom studies to life. This connection between classroom learning and real-world experiences allows students to engage and retain knowledge in a more meaningful way.
VLA's commitment to community extends beyond just the students. They encourage families to join in the field trips and other events. Even with a large student population, they aim to provide opportunities for family involvement, ensuring that the community feel extends to parents as well.
Visit www.sageoak.education for more information on the program and how to provide your child with a well-rounded educational experience that extends beyond the virtual classroom.

In this episode of the Sage Studio Podcast, Tiffiny Webster is joined by Regional Mentor, Taylore Coulombe, to discuss the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) program and Sage Serves. The PVSA program was established in 2003 by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation as a way to recognize the role of volunteers and their impact on communities. Sage Oak, being a certifying organization, offers this program to its students, starting from kindergarten to 12th grade.
Participating in the PVSA program provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate character, accountability, excellence, growth mindset, and service, which are the student learning outcomes (SLOs) valued by Sage Oak. It not only helps students learn the values of giving back and service but it can also help high school students when completing college applications. Colleges often value a history of community service, and having the PVSA on college applications can make students stand out from the crowd.
There are no set volunteer hour requirements and all students are welcome to participate. Students who are able and willing to serve in an extensive way can work towards earning awards for reaching service hour milestones. All participants will be recognized at the End of the Year Regional Socials and at High School Graduation.
Parents and families are encouraged to look for volunteer opportunities within their local communities.

In this episode, Tiffiny Webster is joined by Crista Bross from the high school department to discuss all things Career Technical Education (CTE) Child Development. The CTE program at Sage Oak offers a robust curriculum that goes beyond regular course content to provide students with hands-on experiences and opportunities for growth. Through this program, students not only fulfill graduation requirements but also gain concentrated instruction in the area of child development.
The Child Development series consists of three courses. The first two, Child Development 1 and Child Development 2, are taught at Sage Oak, while the third course, Child Development 3, is a partnership with a community college. This collaboration allows students to earn community college credit and further deepen their learning. The program also offers additional benefits such as field trips, guest speakers, and a student-run club, which provide students with a more immersive experience in the subject.
The child development program covers a wide range of topics, starting from conception to toddlerhood. Students also have the opportunity to participate in simulations, such as wearing a pregnancy suit simulator that simulates the third trimester of pregnancy. This hands-on experience allows students to empathize with pregnant women and gain a deeper understanding of the development that occurs during pregnancy. The program also delves into the scientific aspects of child development, helping students appreciate the complexity of prenatal development.
After completing the child development program, students can pursue various college programs and careers related to the field. While early childhood education is a common path, the program at Sage Oak aims to broaden students' horizons. Field trips to explore medical careers involved with child development and the exploration of entrepreneurship in the industry are part of the program's vision. Whether students are interested in science, business, or government, the knowledge and skills gained from the program can be applied to a variety of passions and career paths.
Overall, the CTE Child Development program at Sage Oak provides students with a comprehensive education in the field of child development. It not only fulfills graduation requirements but also offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience and explore various career paths. In this episode of the Sage Studio podcast, host Tiffiny Webster is joined by two guests, Traci King, HS Principal, and Laura Glaviota, HS Assistant Principal, The topic of discussion is Sage Oak's Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. CTE stands for Career Technical Education and refers to a sequence of courses aligned with a student's interest and intended to prepare them for specific careers. Sage Oak offers three pathways: Child Development, Sports Medicine, and Arts, Media and Entertainment. Each pathway consists of courses that provide students with the necessary skills for their chosen career.
The inspiration behind implementing CTE programs at Sage Oak was the recognition of a clear disconnect between traditional education pathways and the practical skills that businesses expect from college graduates. Traci shares a statistic that only 11% of business leaders believed that college graduates were prepared to enter the workforce. To bridge this gap, Sage Oak introduced CTE programs to provide students with applicable skills that employers value.
The CTE programs at Sage Oak differ from those in traditional brick and mortar schools due to the flexibility of the independent study model. Students can adapt their learning schedules to accommodate their commitments and engage with the content when they are most receptive. Additionally, Sage Oak has the ability to change CTE programs quickly to keep up with industry changes.
Laura explains how the CTE courses are integrated into students' regular schedules. These courses fulfill graduation requirements and, in some cases, meet A-G requirements for students planning to attend a four-year college in California. By strategically selecting CTE courses, students can satisfy elective credit requirements while gaining expertise in a specific field of study for post-high school endeavors.
Technology plays a crucial role in Sage Oak's CTE programs. Students gain real-world experience and certifications through hands-on activities and the use of up-to-date technology. For example, in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment pathway, students earn industry-recognized certifications in Adobe and Illustrator. In the Child Development program, students use computer-chipped "babies" to monitor their interactions and receive feedback on their caregiving skills.
Overall, Sage Oak's CTE programs aim to prepare students for the workforce by providing them with practical skills and industry experience. The flexibility of the independent study model allows students to customize their learning schedules while fulfilling graduation and college entrance requirements. It's a chance for students to meet new friends and for parents to connect with both new and experienced families who can provide support and resources.
The Back to School Socials also offer an exciting opportunity for students to have their school pictures taken, as this has been a challenge in recent years. While recognizing that students learn in different ways and at different paces, we strive to guide all of our students on their own personal, educational journey while on the path to graduate. Offering diverse and innovative curriculum, project-based, and concurrent enrollment options with community colleges, we aim to prepare students to be lifelong and independent learners who think globally, act locally, and civically engage with their community.

What makes Sage Oak Counselors and the Sage Oak Counseling Program unique?**
The mission of the Sage Oak School Counseling Program is to provide a comprehensive program that proactively seeks to improve our students’ well-being and advocates for their personalized growth and success. We will collaborate with parents/guardians, staff, and community members and treat every student with respect and dignity. We will empower students to become the best version of themselves by teaching social-emotional learning, providing academic support, and helping students become college and career ready.
The school counselor is a certified educator with a pupil personnel services (PPS) credential in school counseling and is qualified to address the academic, career, and social/ emotional needs of all students. The role of a school counselor is to design and deliver a school counseling program that improves student outcomes for all students. We collaborate with teachers and parents on early identification and intervention of children’s academic and social/emotional needs, which is essential in removing barriers to learning and developing skills and behaviors critical for academic achievement. We offer students professional assistance and support one-on-one or in small groups during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change, or other situations impeding student success. The school counselor upholds the ethical and professional standards of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA).
