Today I’m joined by Rick Spicer, who I consider to be one of those men. Rick operates Pack Rat Outdoor Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas and also runs the Instagram account, Pack Rat Bushcraft. Rick and I met in South Carolina this past winter at WinterStrong and we spent an entire afternoon walking a 3D archery course with our traditional bows with mutual friend and former guest on the show, Correy Hawk. Rick and i had a great conversation in this episode covering, traditional archery, becoming a better woodsman and hunter v. a better archer, bush craft tips for newbies, Rick’s handmade quivers, his yearly buschraft event the Brewhaw Bushwack, fitness and a lot more.

One of my favorite things about getting to talk to so many successful men on this show is the uniqueness in their individual approaches to their field. Whats even cooler then that is when I get to notice the characteristics and traits that are similar across many of their stories. Arguably the most common among these is this innate drive and focus that my guest today, Matt Ward, used in a phrase that just punched me when he said it. All or nothing. Matt is a Chiropractic Doctor, backcountry hunter, outdoorsman, fitness enthusiast, and podcast host of Beyond The Kill, although I’m sure I’m forgetting something in there. With all of those pursuits being rather time intensive, its hard to imagine how you can really be “All or Nothing”. But what I’ve come to realize is that the phrase doesn’t always mean, at the expense of everything else. That is just the level of focus and attention to detail brought to each endeavor. This was a great conversation catching up with Matt, and we were able to cover a lot of ground about lessons he’s learned on how to be successful in the mountains and in fitness. Enjoy this episode of the Nomad Strength Show, with Matt Ward.

In Episode 2 of the Ross and Brandon Show, the guys chat about their individual struggles with the balances of social media, and how to be authentic in a world that rewards inauthenticity. A lot of the conversation turned to how to navigate the flood of information and turn it into positive, personal growth, especially for men. This was a fun conversation that brought to fruition some ideas that hadn't been spoken out loud before. Enjoy the episode! If the last 3 years have taught us anything, its that we are entirely too dependent on others for our not only survival, but just daily needs. This realization was a wake up call for many. To procure and be responsible for yourself and your family entirely should be the norm, but we’ve become reliant on convenience and comfort in the last 100 years. For most people, the simplest place to begin to become more sovereign is your food supply. My guest today, Kris Chain, has an extremely elegant solution. Kris is the creator of Season Report. Seasonreport.com is the everything almanac. Hunting, foraging, and gardening - all the tedious information like dates, regulations, are available in just a few clicks. All the information you want without any of the bloated ads or long testimonials. If you want to eat higher quality food, live a more active lifestyle, and grow closer to nature - start with seasonreport.com. Stop spending so much time researching when or where and start doing. In this conversation, we talk about how and why this platform came to be. But if you also want to hear about Nordic underground deep freezes, Genetic research on muscle, and why what your mom told you to do to be healthy when you were a kid is probably correct, than enjoy this episode of the Nomad Strength Show with Kris chain.

In the first episode of this season of the affectionately and extremely creatively named, The Ross and Brandon Show, we dive into the lessons and mindset to establish foundations for success. We have a good time reliving some childhood and athletic memories that helped shape us into who we are today, and get into what we wish we would have known earlier in life to help be successful in the mountains. This project will be a chance for us to share what we're learning and experimenting with in our training and preparations for hunts and other outdoors adventures. We'll also take some deep dives into specific passions we have in the strength and outdoors worlds. Enjoy the show! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Finding authenticity in the social media landscape is like finding a lush oasis in the middle of a barren desert. While we do have the ability to curate our feeds, the algorithms and bots don’t make it easy to stay away from the garbage that distracts or upsets us. So when you do find an account that is a positive person sharing their passions and actually adding value to your day, make sure you follow. My guest today is Johnathan McCormick of Red Beard Outdoors, and he is a great example of this. His podcast and social media pages have grown significantly in the last year, and we talk about why and how that happened. Johnathan gives a lot of great insight into how he makes social media work for him without letting it consume his time and energy. We also had a great conversation about what we love about the outdoors, and take some time to tell hunting stories. There’s lots of valuable information in this one, and Johnathan was kind enough to stick around for the Substack-only show, Unplugged after our chat here, so be sure to check the show notes and head over to the Nomad Strength Substack to find the extra episodes and other exclusive content.

There has been a pretty prevalent corner of the internet in recent years focused on giving tools to men to improve their lives. I mean, its what this show, and my coaching business is based in sharing. But a lot of the content out there is full of fluff, vain, nonsense and put out by men who don’t live what they preach. So i guess its not really different than most industries, eh? However, there are real men out there doing their best to put out content that can make a positive impact. My guest today, Curt Storring, is one of these men. I came across Curt’s page in the last few months and I immediately noticed how impactful his writings and posts had, so I had to reach out to him. In our conversation today, Curt gives the back story to how he got into this work, how some of the lessons he learned and now teaches helped his marriage from failing. Plus, we have a great conversation about the power of goal setting and his techniques for writing them.

One of the great frustrations of my professional life is the constant and unrelenting need for black and white answers to health questions. This is an entire conversation full of nuance, and yet we try to reduce it down to this protocol or this system is THE answer. And we do this before even looking under the hood to see what things are going on with an individual person. So how do we get to the bottom of our individual needs? Today, my guest, Anders Varner, host of Barbell Shrugged, and an extremely experienced coach joins me to discuss why getting blood work is so important. This is a complex and elegant topic, so be sure to take notes for this episode. There are a ton of nuggets and actionable lessons today. There are a few human experiences that seem to transcend status, race, or culture. One however, I believe to be a pretty good measure of a man’s character, and that is adversity. How a man handles adversity, with pretty consistent accuracy, will tell you what kind of man he is. Is there a drive to accomplish a goal, to leave a legacy, or to reach new heights? Men with goals like this are unlikely to be deterred by small, or even quite large, bumps in the road on the way to their dreams. But, for every 1 that has the resilience to continue on, there are likely 50 that will give up when faced with the same challenge. My guest today, Coby Cochran, has a story a lot like this. Coby is a husband, father, former Army Ranger, and the founder of Uncanna, a CBD company devoted to helping the treatment and care of veterans through natural solutions, rather than pharmaceutical. In our conversation today, Coby and I cover a lot of ground about how Uncanna was formed and a few of the many challenges they’ve faced in operating a CBD company, his time in the military and competing in the Best Ranger competition, and what it’s like running a large company with his wife, and how he creates the necessary family time to still be present. This is a great episode full of lessons for any aspiring or current entrepreneurs out there, so be sure to follow Uncanna and all of the work they’re doing.

In this highly-requested episode, I'm going to very basically recommend and explain a few supplements I really enjoy and a couple that I generally suggest to coaching clients. My guest today is Nate Spearing. Nate is a former Army Ranger who served for 14 years in Elite Special Operations, but his story might not be what you expect. His journey was filled with adversity and failure. He likes to say he, “failed his way to the top”. Nate left the military to pursue entrepreneurship and to be more connected to his wife and children as the supportive husband and father they needed. He has built several successful businesses since retiring from the military, and his input is in a word, refreshing. The most innovative, creative, and useful ideas come from someone thinking of a practical way to solve a problem in their own life. My guest today, Bear Handlon, is one of those people. Bear is the founder and CEO of Born Primitive apparel, former military, Crossfit Games athlete, and family man. Bear started Born Primitive to fill a need, and he did so in what we both affectionately called the Hayday of the Crossfit Games. Years later, he saw another need to fill and enlisted the help of Aron Snyder to create Born Primitive Outdoors, a brand of mountain and outdoor layering systems. In this conversation, Bear and I dive into the Outdoors line and what makes it different than what is currently on the market, the ups and downs of running a business, and he also shares some really insightful productivity practices that keep his company and himself operating at a high level. The Outdoors line is launching this Friday the 16th with a pre-sale, but be warned, there’s already 20,000 or so people on the list. So if you want a run at the first round of this killer gear, be ready to roll on Friday and sign up for the updates. I really enjoyed this conversation with Bear and took a lot away from his insights.

This was an Inception-like show today. I read had a post that was inspired by a blog written by someone who listened to a podcast, then I recorded a show about it! The idea of having a baseline fitness or health standard before having certain conversations is something I wholeheartedly agree with, so I wanted to expand on all of it in today's solo episode.

Back on the show today is Eric Conn, host of several great podcasts (The Hard Men Podcast, The King's Hall, and Wilderness Warrior) aimed at giving practical advice to Christian men about masculinity. Today we try to come up with some solutions to some of the problems Christian men are facing today, including;

How to make good Christian media that isn't cheesy

Encouraging men to get a gang together and cause some trouble for good, as Eric says

Addressing the poor general health and fitness of men in the church

How powerful hunting can be for personal growth

Today Logan Hanks returns to the podcast to bring some refreshing perspective to a lot of modern issues. Logan is a farmer by trade, but also hosts the successful podcast, Living Fully Loaded. In this conversation today we dive into our struggles with social media and how to overcome that to build successful businesses. We share many beliefs on the matter, and brainstorm ways to work through our reservations of "over-sharing". Like most conversations I have with Logan, the two of us are having a good time and laughing through most of the episode. Enjoy this conversation and the new format of the episodes being released.

Today I'm joined by Richard Love aka Exit Comfort Zone on social media. This was a conversation I've been looking forward to for a long time after getting introduced by mutual friend and past guest of the show, Akira VanEgmond. Richard has a very strong presentation on his platforms and I really wanted to get to understand the man behind the account. We had a great time in this episode and I learned a lot about his time in athletics, then the Swedish Arctic Rangers, his journey to the states and meeting his wife, and why he trains the way he does. Enjoy this episode and let it inspire you to EXIT YOUR COMFORT ZONE.

Hunting season is right around the corner, which means it's time to be getting plans made, gear acquired, and weapons dialed in. As a new bowhunter, I have been relying on a lot of people much smarter than myself to help me feel prepared to hit the mountains this September, and my guest today is one of them. Ben Eipert is a technical wizard and engineer for Vector Arrows, a company challenging the norm by building by building arrows custom to the customer's individual measurements and set up. We had a great talk for today's episode and it was really educational for me. Ben explained a lot of the nuance that goes into getting your archery set up dialed in and what it really takes to be a successful hunter and shooter. This will be a great episode for anyone wanting to learn more about the technical aspects of archery and setting up your bow. Enjoy

We've probably all hit a point in our training where we feel like there's just no more energy or desire. Training hard for years can lead to burnout, and my guest today has a great story about how he overcame that himself and fell in love with training again. John Parker is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, StrongFirst Elite, Beast Tamer, and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. John graduated from the University of California San Diego in 2008 with a degree in History and Spanish Literature. He has 15 years experience in the world of strength and conditioning and trains clients locally and worldwide. He and I had a great conversation about coaching and running a business you love, as well as his journey back to enjoying his training, and the programs he's created to help others do the same.

There has always been a special connection between Man and Nature. It is innate; something we often can't explain. Getting out and experiencing the stillness of the air and the sounds of the trees and animals cannot be replicated. When you add in the focus and adrenaline of the pursuit of an animal, there are things you feel that you can't explain. Today I'm joined by Christian Williams of Archery Strong. Christian is a returning guest on the show and we get into some really fun conversation about the importance of hunting to us as humans, and men specifically. Christian is a great coach who helps archers feel healthier and stronger so they can continue doing the thing they love. Be sure to give him a follow and enjoy this episode. HIGHLIGHTS:

I had the pleasure for today's episode of catching up with fantastic coach, and my friend, Greg Walsh of Wolf Brigade Gym. This time around, Greg and I had a lot to catch up on, and as our conversations often do, we went down some rabbit holes. Through all of it we center around the idea of always finding small ways to improve ourselves, or "tinkering" as Greg says. We covered a lot of ground, and still could have covered more, but I know that you'll enjoy this conversation.

HIGHLIGHTS: -Greg fills me in on Convergence, the annual training and coaching gathering at Wolf Brigade Gym -How Greg has been working through a fairly debilitating injury -Why we must continue to pursue growth -What have we learned in the last two years of oversight, censorship, and hypocrisy?

Today's episode is a one you are going to need a pen and pad for some vigorous note taking. In health and fitness there are many things on the fringe that are considered too "out there" for the mainstream Strength and Conditioning world. If you've listened to this podcast before, its not a surprise that that is exactly what attracted me to my guest today, Cory Bell. Cory has worked in several S&C programs at various levels, and is now the head strength coach at his alma matter, West Orange-Stark in Texas. In today's episode we are diving deep into the world of frequencies, and not the amount of times you train in a week, but actual audio frequencies and the effect they have on your body for training, recovery, healing, and a host of other things. This is an ancient practice and Cory is working to bring it to performance and athletics and has had some pretty amazing results. This was such a fun conversation and I really enjoyed going down some fun rabbit holes. Enjoy this one!

HIGHLIGHTS: -Explaining the Solfeggio Scale -What he has seen with his athletes on the protocol -How each frequency is meant for something specific -Cory's protocol recommendations

Today I am pleased to be joined by Dr. Coach Pat Ivey. Pat and I met at Winter Strong, and we were actually on the same competition team that weekend. He and I competed together and suffered together. He was a real leader on the team that day for the competition, and I just knew I needed to get to know him a little bit better after that weekend and talk to him more. So that's exactly what we did in this conversation. Pat is the Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Health and Performance at the University of Louisville. He has such an interesting perspective on strength and performance, because he's been in every role that exists. I know you will enjoy this one, as I did, so be sure to follow Dr. Ivey and all that he is doing.

HIGHLIGHTS: - Pat's experiences with the outdoors and being a "city" outdoors kid -The new NIL deals in the NCAA and what it actually means -Student earning potentials as an athlete or marketing student -Pat's business and how it began -The importance of finding the right people and letting them do their thing

Today's solo show my hit some of you a little harder. If it does, good! Making sure you are taking action and working toward the things you say you want to achieve seems obvious, but often times those two things aren't in alignment. In this episode we'll be tackling a few practical ways to make sure they are.

Whenever I get the chance to dive really deep and nerd out on programming and development, I love it. When I met today's guest, Derek Woodske, at Winterstrong a couple months ago, I knew I would have the same conversations with him. Funny enough though, we spent a great deal of time connecting over Montana, North Idaho and the part of the country we both love so much. This episode started a bit like that as well, but we quickly got into a lot of great areas of the things that have changed in athlete development in the last few decades. Derek gives some great insight into what is working now, and how to apply a lot of these ideas into an athlete's program. For any coaches out there, or anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of training, you'll love this conversation.

HIGHLIGHTS:

What training programs in high school used to look like

What considerations to make for recovery protocols

Some talk on PED's and what they really are

Derek's idea that athlete's take a year or two before going to college to compete

Programming blocks for athletes and how to incorporate an "A, B, and C" program

On today's solo episode, I'm recapping a post I made earlier in the week that stirred some really good conversation. It was dealing with habits and time management, so I thought it would be a good idea to continue that conversation in the podcast with some practical steps you can take to improve the way you structure your day for optimal effectiveness. If you enjoyed this one, and it gave you some helpful takeaways, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and share it with someone else who could benefit.

While it is not lost on me that you have found this podcast and other Nomad Strength internet happenings via extraordinary technology, there is something to be said for the connection and meaning found in traditional, handmade items. My guest today absolutely walks that walk, and in this episode with Correy Hawk, we talk about just that. Correy is a professional bowyer, former marine, homesteader, and survivalist. We get into a lot of things in this episode I didn't necessarily intend on when I asked Correy to come on, but I'm glad we did, because it was just honest conversation about where we are.

HIGHLIGHTS: -Correy's journey into making traditional wooden bows and what cultures inspire his designs -The downfalls of technology in archery, and everything else... -How to approach developing new skills, and motivating yourself to start

We're diving into my favorite training tool again today! We've had several guests appear on the show who have expressed the sentiment we are covering with this episode. We love kettlebells, and know how beneficial they can be, so what is one thing that most people aren't doing with them? Training with heavy bells! I'm going to break down my approach to heavy bell training and some great starting points for anyone no matter their experience with them. The common perception is that bells are a great, light conditioning tool, and I'm here to tell you that is straight up fake news. Get strong with them, and have fun doing it. Cheers!

In the social media landscape, the hunting community is often facing an uphill battle. The idea of posting pictures of animals you've killed will always bring certain comments and messages, no matter how well its done. However, what happens when the negative feedback is coming from within the hunting community? My guest today deals with this conundrum frequently. Zach Owens is an avid outdoorsman, bow hunter, trapper, husband, and father. Zach takes heat online because of the animals he hunts, predators, specifically wolves. I was really excited to be able to sit down with Zach and talk about why predator management is such a key part of the hunting landscape if we wish to have thriving numbers of other game animals. He provides great insight into that topic, and why he truly loves these animals in a way that most don't understand. Enjoy!

We live in a time where we can get whatever we want whenever we want, usually from someone we don't know overseas somewhere. It's becoming harder and harder to buy really great, American made products; while also knowing the family running the operation. Today my guest is Scott Volquartsen of Volquartsen Firearms. Scott and I connected at WinterStrong recently and I knew from all of the endorsements from people I knew, and after shooting his guns, that I had to learn more about his story. I recently made a pilgrimage down to the woods of South Carolina to attend WinterStrong, an event put on by the team at Sorinex. I'd heard about how special this weekend was, but wasn't able to grasp the full concept until I was there. The conversations were epic, and I came away with so many things to implement. Today my guest is Andy Moeckel, also known as the Flip Flop Guy.

If you haven't heard, seen, or more importantly, tasted the food that comes as a result of his cooking method, you're going to want to listen to this episode.

I had the pleasure of having some elk that Andy prepared using his cooking technique, the Flip Flop and it was unbelievable.

In this conversation we get into what exactly this wild method of cooking is, how it has been passed down through generations in his family along with the signature sauce that you can now purchase, and how to build a business out of something you're truly in love with.

Andy has done things his own way, and his goal is to get the method (which is really an event) into every backyard in America.

I had a blast catching up with him, and I know you'll enjoy what he has to say.

Today I had the pleasure of talking to Mark Valenti, host of The Refined Savage podcast, former Highland Games athlete, and owner of Blind Dog Gym in Vermillion, Ohio.

Mark has been in the strength world since the 80's and has a ton of valuable training experience and knowledge. He's learned from the best in the world and is walking proof of the work he puts in.

We had a great conversation covering his training progressions throughout the years; stories from spending some time around Louis Simmons, what is really important about being strong and healthy; and a lot more.

Enjoy this one, I know I did!

Ross Johnson is an entrepreneur, investor, and co-founder of Smart Coach where he helps online coaches build their tribe and grow their business.

I worked with Ross personally last year as I was transitioning to coaching full-time online, he has a ton of expertise and knowledge in the area of internet marketing.

We got into some pretty out-there stuff in this conversation with crypto and technology (specifically Facebook's rebrand as Meta), and it will definitely have you thinking about the state of things in the world and what the next 10-15 years could look like.

We also got into how Ross has corrected some of the health issues he had these last couple of years with some help of the Biohacking crowd.

This was a really fun episode and will leave you thinking, which is good. We need more of that.

Today is a special show, and a heavy one to be honest.

I sat down with my good friend, Brandon Lilly, again for the podcast on the 1 year anniversary of the passing of our friend, Terence Mitchell.

Many of you listening knew T personally, or you followed along with his journey and were still affected by his enthusiasm for training and for life; and the two of us wanted to reflect on what he meant to us in the short time he was a part of our lives.

My hope, is that if you haven't heard of Terence until this moment, that you can go through his Instagram page, go through his workouts, and see the profound change in yourself as a result.

Enjoy this one, and go crank out a workout for T when you're done.

Jesse Phillips is a husband, father, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and who I believe to be the embodiment of Johnny Cash's song, "I've Been Everywhere". But if I were to take all of that life experience and distill it down to one word, I'd call Jesse a storyteller.

Jesse joined me to talk about; life transitioning out of the military, the recent debacle in Afghanistan (which he speaks and writes extremely eloquently about), and the importance of what he calls 'living to live'.

This was a really great episode, and I know you will too.

In today's episode, I had the chance to sit down and talk with Josh Smith, master bladesmith and owner of Montana Knife Company.

Josh has been making knives since he was a young man and became the youngest master bladesmith ever. He goes over the process that title entails and also discusses the two appearances he made on the show Forged in Fire.

We also talked about the importance of American manufacturing and why being made in the U.S.A is so important to Josh.

He has a really inspiring story and has great advice for anyone who has a passion and wants to turn it into a career.

The way we view our food is the foundation of our relationship with it. If we're talking long term health here; how do I get long term results and also enjoy my food?

It doesn't have to be one or the other, but it begins in your mind, not on the plate.

How you view your food's purpose is going to have a massive effect on your ability to be successful; so I recorded today's episode to dive into exactly how do this in a way that breeds long term results.

This is not a diet, or a nutrition protocol to follow; this is Step 1. The nuance and minutia of your specific needs will come next.

Today I'm joined by Robbie Kroeger, founder of Blood Origins. Robbie has created an amazing nonprofit organization who's mission is to "Tell The Truth About Hunting."

Through funding conservation projects around the globe, telling human stories in an incredible documentary series about the true call to hunting we have as humans (In The Blood, as he calls it), Blood Origins is doing things that most aren't in the industry.

This was a really great conversation with Robbie, and I was learning a ton during our discussion. He speaks very eloquently and intelligently about what he describes as "hunting's PR problem."

There were some really great nuggets of information here that will hopefully give those of you who are interested in conservation some information and action steps to take.

Enjoy!

P.S- I also learned a nice little nugget about how to technically spell Robbie's last name following the German rules. Completely by accident.

For today's solo show, I wanted to breakdown a concept that has come up in several conversations lately.

Many might not draw a distinction between a coach and a trainer; but I do, and I wanted to go over how I classify them for the show today.

This episode could be helpful for you if you are currently on the search for someone to guide you along in your quest, whatever the medium may be.

If this is in anyway helpful for you, I'd love to hear how. If you think its a load of bull, feel free to let me know that too.

He also has some great opinions on gi vs. no-gi, how to start training BJJ, and the current state of Jiu-Jitsu as a sport and how that translates to the person just wanting to learn a form of self-defense.

A while back I wrote a guest article on for a website on the concept of Balance.

The way that I define balance in life between work, training, life, family, etc. is probably a bit different than what you usually hear. So for the solo episode today, I wanted to read and expand on the article that I wrote almost a year ago.

What is balance?

Is it even attainable?

If so, how?

I cover all of these things in the episode, and there are a lot of great takeaways from this one.

Today's episode was a real treat for me as a strength history nerd. I am joined today James Fuller, of Strongman Archaeology.

James has been studying and performing the old time strongman lifts for years and his instagram page has fascinated me for a while now.

We go over a ton in this conversation;

The history of these movements and why they stopped being performed

James' journey from bodybuilding in the 80's to discovering the old time movements

Why the exercises are beneficial and why they hit a lot of things most modern exercises don't

This was so fun for me that I decided to have James be my own personal coach for the next handful of months as I am preparing for my first jiu-jitsu tournament. The history of these movements go hand-in-hand with grappling so I'm really excited to dive into these programs.

We've reached episode 50 of the podcast! And for this milestone I couldn't have picked anyone better to have a conversation with than Bert Sorin.

Bert and his wonderful wife Lesley are the proud parents of three children. Bert and his family, a family rooted in strength, have been entrenched in the human performance world for as far back as he can remember.

Growing up with a barbell in his hand has been pivotal in charting the course of his life and leading him to become a 4-time Division 1 All-American Track and Field (Hammer and 35 lb. Weight Throw), Southeastern Conference Champion, former record holder in Weight Throw, and an Olympic trials athlete.

Bert is currently the President and Co-Owner of Sorinex Exercise Equipment, a very successful family run business founded by his father, another big name in the iron game, Richard Sorin. Together they are the inventors of hardware and applications to make people more effective, efficient, and safe on the sports field and the battle field.

Although Sorin never served in the armed forces, his gear is changing the game to provide readiness and rebuilding to the veterans prior to, during and after their deployments to far off, hostile lands. Bert’s network of veterans, scientists, coaches and therapists allows for a combination of expertise and support, and has been changing lives on both sides of the table.

Bert pushes each day to find the best in people, and to assist in their exploration of their potential and maximize their value to the cause.

Today's episode was one of my favorite that I've recorded since starting the podcast, mainly because this one was in person!

Austin Legg joins me today on the show to talk about some great lessons and motivation from his time spent hunting in the deep backcountry, usually alone.

Austin came out to the patio gym to get a true Nomad experience, Ice bath in the freezer followed by a kettlebell and sandbag training session prior to us hitting record.

This was a really fun episode and there are some gold nuggets in this one, including;

-How Austin became comfortable in the wilderness alone

-His hard-learned lessons of being a self-taught hunter

-The joys of chasing Bigfoot

-One of the craziest and coolest hunting stories you'll hear

Plus a ton more of great, motivational things to take away. Follow Austin's backcountry journeys and Bigfoot ramblings on Instagram and enjoy the episode!

Today I'm really excited to bring you my conversation with Luke Day.

I had the pleasure of listening to Luke speak at Summer Strong and he gave my favorite presentation of the weekend, so I was really happy to be able to speak to him today on the show.

This was a really motivating conversation to have, but it also provides some really great takeaways that we can all adapt into our lives.

What does loving someone really mean?

Can I love someone and still confront them or even get in fights with them?

Why discomfort needs to be the most consistent thing in your life.

We cover all this and more in this episode and I really believe you will get some great things from this one.

I'm really excited to bring you this episode today. I have been learning from and following Zach Even-Esh for over 10 years now. He was one of the first coaches I really dove in to content-wise when I began coaching, so it was a great time for me getting to talk to him about our shared nerd-like obsession; Old School historic strength culture and literature.

We talked a lot about the mindset behind the men in the physical culture world 100 years ago and how that influenced and motivated Zach to start and continue training after 30+ years.

This was a great conversation and be on the lookout for Part 2 coming.

Enjoy!

Today's episode is a bit more of a self-reflection spoken into a mic, rather than the normal Thursday show.

In last week's episode with Greg Walsh, he used the term Expert Generalist, and the moment he said it I had a bit of an epiphany.

I realized that that philosophy has been my approach to much of life, but just did have a word for it!

So today I'm breaking down what that term has meant to me and how you can apply it to training and life.

Enjoy!

For today's episode, I was fortunate to sit down and talk with Matt Vincent, owner of HViii (prounounced, Hate) Brand Goods, Habit Coffee, and host of the UMSO Podcast.

He was a 2x Highland Games World Champion, and has since completely transformed himself physically. We get into his process and mindset for reinventing himself after being the best in the world.

Matt is a very motivational person to talk to and has a really great perspective on performance, health, and life.

We got into some really fun topics in this conversation, including:

His approach to mindset and reinventing himself after being a world champ

The new approach he has for training and the next challenges he's working toward

His facility, DOPE (Division Of Performance Enhancement) and the very specific design elements he had in his head

The growth of HViii and the next projects he's working on

A pretty fun tangent on steroids in baseball and other sports

I had a great time chatting with Matt and I know y'all will enjoy it.

In today’s episode I answer a question that was asked via Instagram.

The difference between training on a strict program v. training by “feel”. This was a great question and an important concept to cover.

Let me know in the comments if you agree or disagree with my take on it, would love to discuss.

The show today is arguably one of my favorite conversations I’ve had since we launched this thing.

Greg Walsh is the founder of Wolf Brigade Gym in Rochester, NY. He and I officially met at Summer Strong and pretty much instantly clicked in conversation.

We got into some really great topics of conversation in this episode, including:

-Greg’s past in the Hardcore and BMX world, beginning in the late 80’s.

-Martial arts and being a foundational part of Crossfit Long Beach

-How Wolf Brigade came to be

-Training with maces and kettlebells (something he has done for 15+ years)

-Life lessons we’ve both learned in business and training

We could have gone another two hours, but I’ll bet that Greg comes back for a part 2 at some point.Enjoy this one, I definitely did.

Last week's solo show we talked about the basics of breath, so it seemed only fitting that we follow that up this week with what we usually couple in breath practice; Cold Exposure.

Today I'm going to go over the what, why, and how of getting cold. We'll cover:

-The benefits and why cold exposure is important for health

-The 30 Day Cold Shower Challenge

-How to set up a cold tub/freezer

Lots of takeaways in this one, so you may need to listen to it a second time to get all the info written down!

Enjoy and stay cold!

I have been waiting to talk to today's guest for a very long time, and for a lot of reasons.

I am fascinated by people who are doing things on the fringes of the health and fitness space, and to some; Josh Goldstein might be in outer space.

Josh has adopted a raw primal lifestyle, which as you can imagine, has gotten him all kinds of feedback on social media, much of which is negative to say the least. We tackle this odd "concern" that people seem to have for his health, when he has never felt better in his life.

In this conversation, we also cover:

His journey to the current lifestyle he lives

Eating an entire raw chicken on Instagram

His recent studying of Germ Theory v. Terrain Theory

How his Raw Primal diet is structured

The benefits of raw animal fats in your diet

and a ton more

This one will make you think, in all the best ways. I want to bring people on to this show that don't feed the same regurgitated information you can get everywhere else, and Josh is the perfect guest to bring in a different perspective.

I really enjoyed this and took some great things away from my conversation and hope you do the same.

If you've followed along for any time now, you've likely learned that one of my favorite health and performance topics to teach and study is breath.

Today I decided to do an entire episode on the basics of breath practice with a few immediate take aways you can implement into your life.

This is essentially a modified version of the in-person seminars and workshops I teach locally.

If you enjoy and get use out of any of the techniques we discuss in the episode, be sure to let me know!

I have been wanting to talk to today's guest for a really long time. I began following Coach Joe DiStefano several years ago after hearing him on a podcast and his approach to strength and health (and specifically kettlebells) really struck a chord with me, and I've been a big fan ever since.

Joe is the host of the podcast Stacked w/ Joe DiStefano, and the founder of RUNGA, a wellness retreat/experience that after hearing him go more in depth on during this episode has me looking at my schedule to try to make a trip to Austin happen.

This conversation was a lot of fun and we covered a ton of territory including:

-Joe's personal health journey from ultra-endurance events to eventually becoming Director of Sport Performance for Spartan

-Kettlebells. All the kettlebells

-Us nerding out on coffee methods

-and a lot more.

Grab a pen and be ready to take some notes.

Today is a bonus episode of the show!

I recently travelled to South Carolina to take part in Sorinex's yearly Summer Strong event. It was an unreal weekend filled with great speakers, amazing food, and awesome people.

I stayed in a house with several other guys, all of whom come from different strength backgrounds. When we got back to the house at 1:30 AM after everything wrapped up, we decided to record a podcast in the living room to recount our experience.

Summer Strong is a special event for those that have never been, and the friendships made are worth the trip by itself.

Joining me today are John Simmons, Jake Phillips, Taylor Quick, Brandon Langois, and George Adams.

We were tired, wired, and a little loopy. So have fun following along to the extremely late night rambles.

After a brief hiatus, the solo shows are back.

This week we are going over my favorite recovery protocols to keep you feeling fresh, training hard, and sleeping great.

There are far more methodologies than what I go over here today, but these are the ones I start with when I coach others and they are my personal favorites!

In today's episode I'm joined by my good friend Ben Walker. Ben is currently a coach for the Strong Coach program, the same program that connected the two of us.

Ben is also a highly intelligent and masterful coach when it comes to movement and fitness, specifically with the steel mace. This was a really fun conversation to catch up with him and dive deep into a couple of fun topics, including:

-The power of the language you use daily, both to people and to yourself

-The multiple branches of the steel mace community and some of the infighting that happens between them

-Social media, the internet and the constant struggle we have with wanting to abandon all technology all together.

Every so often you have a conversation with someone that you have such a nerd-like connection with on a topic that an hour conversation feels like five minutes.

That was how my conversation with Harvey Martin went.

Harvey is the founder of The MindStrong Project, an organization that takes training and human performance to a whole new level. They combine foundational nature based training with industry leading strength, movement, conditioning, and nutrition programs that give athletes a serious edge over the competition.

My conversation with Harvey today centered on the most powerful thing every single living human has access to; your breath.

Harvey and myself are both Art of Breath certified coaches and so we share many of the same practices around breath work.

This was a great discussion with many practical nuggets to take away and implement immediately.

Buckle up, y'all.

On today's, episode I was extremely fortunate to talk with NYT Bestselling author and former Navy SEAL, Jack Carr.

I am a massive fan of his novels and it was a great conversation discussing his most recent release, The Devil's Hand.

He was also able to give us some more details on the new Amazon series adapted from his first book, The Terminal List.

This was a really fun conversation for me to have as such a big fan of his work, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

We wanted to find out who would be on the Mt. Rushmore of Health and Strength Influence.

This episode is my list, and I make my case for each person on the list, plus two honorable mentions.

If you disagree with my list, I don’t care.

Kidding, but let me know who would be on your Mt. Rushmore!

Today my guest is Eric Conn, host of the Hard Men Podcast and the Wilderness Warrior Podcast.

Eric is a husband, father, writer, hunter, gardener, podcast host, and likely some other things I’m forgetting.

In our conversation today we went all over the place, which was great. We discussed:

Eric’s background and what it means to be a Wilderness Warrior

Why men need to be dangerous

Why men (and fathers specifically) need the wilderness and hunting to share with their children

How a hiking trip when he was young taught him lessons he still carries with him

Eric decides he’s going to take over the show and asks me questions for a while

This was a really fun conversation and be sure to check out Eric’s work.

So today’s Top 5 lists, as requested by you are:

-Top 5 Lord of the Rings Characters

-Top 5 Sandbag Exercises

-Top 5 Workouts for Busy Dads

Today, my guest has been one of the most requested by all of y'all since I started this show. Luckily for you, I was going to have him on anyway.

Brandon Lilly has been someone that I have learned from and looked up to for many years as an athlete and a coach, and in the last year become someone I can call a friend.

He is most widely known as a world-class powerlifter, and trained at Westside Barbell. Since then his pursuit of health and longevity have culminated in one of the more amazing transformation stories I have seen.

The conversation today touches a lot of different corners, we cover;

The powerlifting moment Brandon is most proud of

Our common struggles and lessons learned in Jiu-Jitsu

Journaling and the influence of our late friend, Terence Mitchell

The current climate of masculinity

This was a really fun conversation and as always with Brandon, is full of info nuggets.

There is also a great question about how to train with a job that keeps you sleep deprived, and what the deal is with all the raw milk I’ve been drinking.

Sometimes you meet someone and instantly feel like you're talking to yourself in a mirror. Well, that's what my conversation with Ray (@Zingler_strength) was like.

Ray is a fantastic coach that develops youth athletes into what he affectionately calls, “Hammers.” This was a really fun conversation and we got into some fun stuff, including:

How to train young kids the smart way so they enjoy it and stay safe

What its like dealing with parents of kids

What to look for in a coach if you have sport-aged kids

How he's "training" his 2 year old with out actually training him, and what his purpose is for doing so.

And a ton more.

Today’s episode is a doozy. I chatted with Strong Coffee Company CEO, Adam Von Rothfelder  and we covered about as many things as you can in 90 minutes, and it was a blast.

Adam has some amazing stories about his time as a professional MMA fighter, model, reality TV villain, celebrity trainer, and now Founder of Strong Coffee Company, which he gave up all of the previously mentioned things to pursue.

We talk about what is different about Strong Coffee, and why he felt the need to make it. He also breaks down his opinions of why we have been doing Intermittent Fasting all wrong and how to fix it.

Like I said, this one is full of nuggets and I was laughing for most of our conversation. Go follow Adam and Strong Coffee Company for my favorite stuff on the market.

He also has a new podcast out called Up & Adam, go listen if you want more of what you heard today.

In today’s episode, we talk to Rob aka The Grounded Athlete.

Rob is a high-level sprinter and the founder of the Grounded Athlete and GAIA footwear.

We get into a lot of great stuff in this conversation about grounding and why it's so beneficial for humans to be in touch (literally) with the Earth’s electrical field.

Rob gives incredibly detailed data outlining why it's so beneficial, and also ties in his Native American heritage to why it’s so important to him to spread the message of grounding.

The purpose of TGA is simple - to spread awareness for the physiological benefits of being electrically grounded to the earth. In the midst of this movement he developed GAIA Grounding Sandals. These sandals are created with silver and copper elements to ground you when it's difficult to be barefoot. So far they've reached over 20 countries and 49 states.

Setting goals is one of the most powerful habits you can implement in to your life. Unfortunately, most of us just set very vague and superficial goals that don't have any real power behind them.
