Welcome to Breaking the Barrier - a podcast focused on western trailblazers who are breaking barriers both in and out of the arena.
In the rodeo world, a broken barrier is not necessarily a good thing. It’s a 10 second penalty that generally means a competitor is out of the money.
However, the barriers we are breaking here are of a different kind. Breaking the Barrier is a western lifestyle podcast for those who share in the western way of life. Chyanna Black wears many hats: rodeo competitor, nonprofit leader, and advocate for agriculture students. As the co-founder of Ranchers Helping Ranchers and Executive Director of the Panhandle State Foundation, she’s making a lasting impact in the Western world. Since 2022, her team has secured a $930,000 scholarship endowment for ag students, all while serving as the Women in Ag advisor and volunteering with the Guymon Pioneer Days Pro Rodeo Committee.In this episode, we dive into her journey from growing up in Colorado to shaping the future of agriculture and rodeo. Codi Miller grew up on a cattle ranch in rural North Dakota. The cowgirl quickly found her home in the arena, and not long after, found a second home on the pageant stage. Miller's story is one of persistence, as she competed for the Miss North Dakota USA crown seven times. After initially "aging out" of the system, the Miss USA organization removed their age limits for competition, and Miller threw her name in the hat once more- this time without telling her family. Ultimately, Miller won the crown and became the oldest woman to hold the title at 31 years of age. In this role, she is able to share the cowboy lifestyle with audiences of all kinds. These days, she is finishing up her reign and recently began a new role with an organization that is near and dear to her heart: the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Kaitlynn Hayes of Hayden, Colorado grew up immersed in rodeo and the western way of life. As a kid, she had a bet with her brother and cousin to see who could become a stock contractor first. Hayes won the bet when her father helped her purchase a pony.These days, she is still in the stock contracting business, providing opportunities for young rodeo athletes to learn the rodeo ropes. Through her entities Rocky Mountain Mini Broncs & Bulls and KH Bucking Horses, Hayes helps prospective rodeo athletes safely develop their skills. Hayes says the impact of miniature programs on the professional ranks is undeniable. "Of the 15 bareback riders at the NFR last year, six of them rode pony broncs at some point," she said.Her brother, World Champion Bareback Rider Keenan Hayes, illustrates the effectiveness of getting started at an early age. Hayes says it was especially rewarding to watch her brother transition from riding sheep and ponies to winning a gold buckle. "I knew he could do it," she said. Shelby Shank grew up in the suburbs on Cincinnati, Ohio. Through her local 4-H program, she found her passion for agriculture. "I always admired the rural way of life," she said. While obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in animal science from Murray State University and her Master's Degree from Texas Tech University, Shank dove head first into various internship opportunities that helped her forge her own path. Since then, she has not only involved herself in the industry, but but has become an emerging leader and trailblazer, telling meaningful stories as a Field Editor for Texas Farm Bureau. She works in tandem with their in house video team to produce media and articles to be released in both online and print publications, as well as on social media. "I was the first one in my family to attend collage and set a goal to get an internship every summer," Shank said. "It was honestly a God moment how all of those experiences lead me to Farm Bureau."Her fresh perspective and interpersonal skills have allowed her to fully immerse herself in each story, and helps her craft thoughtful questions. 2008 World Champion Tie Down Roper Stran Smith wears a lot of hats- literally and figuratively. The Childress, Texas native has developed his brand beyond the arena with a simple mission statement: Be Strong. Be Real. Be true to who you are. After losing his best friend and horse in separate car accidents, and suffering a life-threatening stroke at the age of 32, Stran is no stranger to hardship. Through hardship, uncertainty, and recovery, Stran has kept his faith in God at the center of his pursuits. Since retiring from rodeo, Stran and his wife Jennifer (Miss Rodeo America 1995!) have gone on to build a beautiful family, become involved in their community, and run a successful company, STS Ranchwear. The brand produces high quality apparel, outerwear, handbags, and more. All apparel is tested personally by Stran on the ranch, and all handbags are hand-designed by Jennifer herself. Stran and Jennifer's hands-on approach to the business does not stop there. The pair undertook the renovation of a historic building in their community to open a retail concept store called 1930 Remnant, carrying STS Ranchwear products and more!As if they weren't busy enough, the couple also has spearheaded a luxury fragrance brand, 1930 fragrances. In this episode, Alexa Wilcox, head women's rodeo coach at New Mexico Junior College shares about her journey in the western world. From growing up in the industry to forging her own path, Wilcox's story is a testament to living her values. Wilcox grew up on a ranch in Colorado and went on to pursue her education and rodeo career at Texas Tech University. After graduation, she began her master's program at Oklahoma State University where she helped coach the rodeo team and got involved with Field of Hope, a nonprofit in Uganda. Wilcox ended up writing her masters thesis about the organization, and went on to spend five years as staff of the program. Wilcox played an integral role in getting the open breakaway class added to the AQHA World Show. After observing so many talented cowgirls firsthand, she saw it a disservice to not allow athletes of that caliber compete. After submitting a rule change and seeing it through, Wilcox went on to become the inaugural open breakaway champion in 2022. Lindsey Miller wears many hats. (Literally and figuratively.) The North Dakota cowgirl served as Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2023, is the author of a successful children's book, and is KMOT TV in Minot's most recent hire. As a young girl, Kendra Elder won the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo with her prized heifer, Pearl. These days, she can be found shuffling around the Will Rogers Memorial Center's 120 acre expanse putting on hundreds of events throughout the year, including the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. A driven career woman and agricultural advocate, Elder has deeply immersed herself in Fort Worth's western ecosystem. Emma Arndt is an artist in every sense of the word. The Kansas native began learning the art of leatherwork as an eighth grader when stuck at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nebraska native Jake Jacobson is currently one of roughly 180 music directors approved by the PRCA to work professional rodeos across the country. His current career path found him by chance while at a bull riding in Arizona.“I was helping in the back pens and some guy came up to me with a microphone. He said “We don’t have an announcer, and you’re it. There’s a CD with four songs on it. Let’s buck some bulls.” Jacobson recalls.Twenty years later, Jacobson is still spinning the tunes for rodeo fans.It is not uncommon for him to play a 1950s tune followed by 80s rock or a brand new trending song. When it comes to the fan experience, Jacobson says good music can take the rodeo to the next level.“It keeps the crowd engaged. The words “I can’t” are simply not part of Dusti Dickerson’s vocabulary. The renowned trick and roman rider has been pushing the envelope since she was ten years old. Alex Parsaye knew from a young age that she belonged on the back of a horse. Growing up, she felt drawn to horses in such a powerful way that her parents got her in riding lessons at the age of five. Parsaye explored multiple events and disciplines, but ultimately fell in love with the pursuit of true horsemanship. These days, Parsaye is the instructor for the Legends of Ranching Program at Colorado State University. This unique program allows students to start a horse from the ground up with oversight from Parsaye and the team at CSU. Students are provided horses from legendary ranches with top notch breeding programs and are entrusted with their care and training for a period of nine months. At the conclusion of this nine-month period, students then sell these horses on behalf of the consigning ranches at the Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale. At 15 years old, Chuck Swisher got his start fighting bulls. These days, he is one of the most sought after bull fighters in the sport of rodeo.
