The arts at UVA are often overlooked, but every year, the drama department showcases works from students, professors, professionals, and alumni. This March, alumna Alexandra Déglise is bringing her original work Raphael's Islands for a staged reading all the way from the island of Martinique.
While Martinique might be far away, the story within the words of the play will hit much closer to home.

On October 7th, a tragic incident unfolded during a concert in southern Israel when a surprise attack was launched by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. This attack resulted in one of the highest death tolls among Jewish people in a single day since the Holocaust with an estimated 1,400 deaths and the kidnapping of over 200 people.
Following the attack, Israel launched a brutal assault in Gaza with the goal of eradicating Hamas. Tragically, this conflict has led to the deaths of over 9,000 people, including many women and children. There are reports of Palestinians being deprived of basic necessities like food, water, and electricity, and there have been accusations of ethnic cleansing and genocide against the Palestinian population.
To understand how this conflict originated and whether peace is a viable option, we had a conversation with Ambassador Stephen Mull, the Vice Provost for Global Affairs.

Friday, October 11 was National Coming Out Day. It was also the same day UVA Alumni invited Catholic Journalist Abigail Shrier to talk about her book Irreversible Damage. The book tries to investigate the "irreversible damage" transgender teens put upon themselves by living their lives.
Needless to say, the LGBTQ community and their allies were not thrilled and it seems the real damage comes from people like Shrier and their transphobic sentiments.
This episode features Claudia Hunn and two other protestors (a student and a professor). They share their thoughts, hopes, and disappointments with UVA and its relationship with the LGBTQ community.
Ultimately, it is clear that the LGBTQ community is here to stay. No matter who tries to deny their lives.

Every year, UVA partners with hundreds of artists from directors and actors to Oscar-winning makeup artists and legendary poets for five nights of movie magic. Jody Kielbasa is the head of it all as not only the Vice Provost for the Arts at UVA but also the Director of the annual Virginia Film Festival.
Mr. Kielbasa elaborates on the extraordinary opportunity and entertainment the festival brings not only to the students at UVA (who can get FREE tickets to all shows) but to the broader Charlottesville community as well.

Today we are talking about residence life. Specifically, we are looking at Brown Residential College. Mason Marche is the Grand Poohbah of this appealing place to live. He has a lot to say about his home and it's definitely worth a listen!
In September of this year, a young woman was killed by police for refusing to wear a headdress in Tehran, Iran. Police brutality is not uncommon in Iran under the rule of their Supreme Leader. However, this young woman's death became a powder keg for multi-generational protests in Iran with women and men standing side by side for equality. Though we are in America, it is still important to be aware and show our support for Iran's movement toward freedom. That is why Abtin Afshar of the Iranian Student Association at UVA is joining us today to share his story and the story of Iran's current situation.
Have you ever felt lonely, like you don't belong, or maybe misunderstood? Don't worry, you are not alone. The transition into college life is a challenging one for even the most social of butterflies. That's where Hoos Connected comes in. Professor Alison Nagel talks about her life and her role in the beloved class for students. She also shares the important research that works to improve the lives of college students at UVA.
Keeping in theme of celebrating diversity at UVA, I have the pleasure of interviewing the President of OYFA, the Organization of Young Filipino Americans, Angelina Rodriguez!
