The main aim of this Centre is to promote multidisciplinary research aiming at fostering responsible and sustainable business conduct in Portugal, within Europe and beyond.
In this new podcast episode, we welcome Dr. Bernardo Ivo Cruz (Former Portuguese Secretary of State for International Trade and Foreign Investment) and Professor Claire Bright to discuss, the implementation of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive for Portuguese companies and the national strategy to advance sustainability in Small and Medium Enterprisers. The interview is conducted by Ana Duarte Santos, master’s student at NOVA School of Law and research associate at the NOVA BHRE.

In this new podcast episode, we welcome Dr. Maria Manuel Leitão Marques (Member of The European Parliament since 2019, Professor at the University of Coimbra, former Minister of the Presidency and of Administrative Modernization in Portugal form 2015 to 2019 and co-rapporteur of the EU Forced Labour Regulation) to discuss the new EU Forced Labour Regulation which bans products made with forced labour from the EU market, its role in upholding human rights in global supply chains, and the synergies with the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. The interview is conducted by Luís Prata Castro, master's student at NOVA School of Law and research associate at the NOVA BHRE.

In this new podcast episode, we discuss the relevance of the Nevsun Ruling in corporate accountability for adverse human rights impacts. There are also discussed other several case law all over the globe regarding corporate liability and respective implications for corporations and respective accountability for human rights adverse impacts, such as forced labour, slavery and cruel a degrading treatment. There are also discussions regarding the forum convention and the competent courts for these kinds of actions and other international private law issues.
This podcast counts with the participation of Dr. Errol Mendes (lawyer, author, professor of Law at University of Ottawa and has been an advisor to corporations, governments, civil society groups and the United Nations. Professor Mendes completed his term as Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre where he was the Project leader for human rights, governance and justice projects in China, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, Peru, El Salvador, Sri Lanka and Indi, conducted by our interviewer and research associate of the Centre Luís Prata Castro.

In this new podcast episode, we discuss the relevance of model contractual clauses in upholding human rights and environmental standards in global supply chains. This episode is timely as the first Draft of the European Model Contractual Clauses were recently released and the public consultation on the draft is open until the 15th of January 2024. It also coincides with the provisional deal reached by the European Parliament and Council of the European Union on the 14th of December on the draft Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive which will contain a provision on the need for model contractual clauses to provide support to companies. The relation between Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence and Contracts is also particularly relevant in relation to the recent national developments and in particular the French Duty of Vigilance Law and the German Supply Chains Act. This podcast counts with the participation of Dr. Martijn Scheltema (partner of Pels Rijcken, professor at Erasmus Univerity Rotterdam and member of the Dutch Supreme Court Bar since 1997. There is a growing interest from companies in conducting their business activities in a more responsible and sustainable way, nevertheless, there is one impact that is still rarely discussed: that of the “democracy footprint”, which includes corporate lobbying, political spending, and other forms of corporate political influence aimed at shaping regulations designed to benefit society.
In this new episode of the NOVA BHRE Podcast Dussu Djabula and Isabel Ruivo discuss with Professor Alberto Alemanno lobbying and how it can be used to enact societal changes.
Professor Alberto Alemanno, is an academic, author, social entrepreneur and a public interest lawyer. He’s Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law at HEC Paris and founder of The Good Lobby. Alberto's ultimate goal is to equalize access to power by mainstreaming lobbying as a new practice of civic and democratic life. Originally from Italy, Alberto is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the College of Europe and holds a PhD in International Law & Economics from Bocconi University.
