Quentin R. Jiles wanted to be famous when he was a kid. Even without knowing how to get there, he saw fame on the horizon. A natural in performer with a stature and voice that commands attention, fame was waiting for him, too. But it would have to wait as he pursued a stable career in social work. A career that made him a nimble jack of all trades who prioritized the care of others until a personal committment required him to pivot.
Today, Quentin has combined his love of politics with his desire to keep people informed to craft a new career as a public speaker, author, political commentator, and thought leader. He created, writes, produces, and stars in the Youtube and Instagram show “The Queue with Que” and has amassed nearly 500,000 followers on Tik Tok. Quentin has become the go-to for all things politics and social justice, especially for those who frequent social media.
Oh, and he is one of the 200 creators invited to the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

Elky “No, It’s Not Short for Anything” Ramirez grew up alternating between the United States and Costa Rica, which left her feeling both grateful and angry. Grateful that she acquired native English language skills, which opened up a wide range of career opportunities for her. Angry about the salary discrepancies between the two countries.
At 10 years old, this smart, curious kid had to balance translating complex immigration documents for her parents with illegally downloading software in order to teach herself digital art. She studied graphic design in college while working a design job at Amazon. Feeling like she received a better education from her colleagues and own self-taught gumption, she stayed at Amazon but not school. The work-gym-sleep-repeat cycle lead her to take a leave of absence from her job to take a course on teaching english as a foreign language at the beach. Swapping work-gym-sleep for beach-tan-class made her return to the office a challenging one. It also marked the beginning of her non-linear path to becoming a freelance graphic designer and digital nomad.
Seeking a community as a solo female traveler lead Elky to a WhatsApp group for Black women where she felt seen and understood. However, she understood the need for Black women to be in spaces created just for them, so with support from the administrator of the group, Elky launched her own group for a melanated people living in Colombia. Coordinating accessible, fun, engaging, unique, inclusive events helped her grow the group to over 700 members. It also sparked Elky Ramirez Experiences, her new growing career that is fulling a space in the growing ex-pat community in her new home country of Colombia.

Bethshiva Lester has always been a little different. A little curious. A little adventurous. Having a successful career as a network engineer was fine, but she was drawn to Jamaica where some of her family’s roots could be traced. The Afro-Costa Rican traveler returned from that visit changed. She resigned from her engineering career to launch a travel agency. A successful one. One that required a move to a newer location where she was approached by a family wanting to participate in a water activity. Ever the resource, Bethshiva crafted an activity for the family that they loved and she loved developing.
Calypso Adventures Costa Rica was born.
Calpyso Adventures Costa Rica provides sustainable ecotourism that showcases the country's diverse landscapes with specific attention to the impact on the local community. Modeling larger organizations by securing the proper certifications for white water rafting, wildlife safaris and kayaking tours; Bethshiva set herself apart by through personalization of service that her customers (like me!) find unmatched in large group tours. Her business continues to thrive because she knows she doesn’t gate-keep the keys to her success and creates opportunities for small business growth locally.
Oh, and she is the first Black certified female white water rafting guide in La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

Amos Morris’ parents earned master’s degrees at a time when that accomplishment was considered exceptional, so he is keenly aware of the powerful influence of “firsts”. In a career spanning more than 30 years across 7 zoos in the United States; Amos became the first Black Zoo Director at an Association of Zoos & Aquarium (AZA)-accredited zoo, the first African-American to be elected to the AZA Board of Directors, and is currently the first Black Zoo Director at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Out of the 240 zoos and aquariums across the country, there are only 3 other Black professionals in a director position. He doesn’t take for granted that a person of color could have their career interests in zoos sparked by seeing a face that looks like theirs.
As a kid who grew up watching TV shows like Wild Kingdom and having pets that ranged from turtles to rabbits, Amos knew he’d have a career working with animals. He pivoted from pursuing a Marine Science degree at Hampton University when the classes conflicted with the football training schedule to graduating with a degree in Animal Science from the University of Missouri. Amos’ career has taken him on ecotourism, conservation, and animal care projects to places like Namibia, Tanzania, Peru, and Greece. An outdoorsy gentleman with a stout presence, sweet smile, and measured tone; Amos sets out every day to be extraordinary for the animals, his staff, and the millions of guests who enter the zoo gates.
Oh, and he has never had a single drop of alcohol in his entire life.

Jessica Moriah Dean is the founder of Educomms Consulting. This Emmy award winning (2023), internationally recognized education and communications professional started her education at NYU's Tisch School of TV and Film before transferring to Barnard College of Columbia University. Jessica earned an MA from the University of Oxford in Philosophy.
Launching her career as an actress, she appeared in commercials (IBM, HSBC Bank, the Lifetime channel, etc.), TV shows (Sex and the City), and films (House of D). She starred for five years as the anchor for the offshoot of Eyewitness News, Teen Kids New.
Jessica developed her educational expertise working with educational organizations such as the French Ministry of Education, the University of Oxford, the University of Pennsylvania. She has contributed to research in the fields of both psychology and philosophy. Dr. Desi Williams, PT, DPT is the Administrator and co-owner of A Plus Care, a mobile physical therapy and occupational therapy business servicing the Los Angeles Area. Desi is also a television host, actress, and. reality television personality with a Doctorate degree in physical therapy and a past life as a college professor. Desi is the winner of CBS’s THE CHALLENGE: USA Season 2. She was also a finalist on THE CHALLENGE: USA Season 1 and a castaway on Season 35 of Survivor on CBS.
Desi passionately believes that good things come to those who seize the day—and every opportunity. And her experiences have proven that opportunity combined with preparation create luck. Not blind luck, but instead purposeful luck created by growing, learning and connecting with people. From that philosophy alone, Desi has been met with great success.
In alignment with her passion for health and fitness, Desi was the spokesperson for Newport News' Annual One City Marathon, the race director for Hampton University's Annual 5k by the Bay, and in late 2014 co-authored and published a book entitled, Love Affair with my Hair: Why Black Women Cheat on Health. Additionally, Desi served as keynote speaker for several organizations throughout Virginia including Riverside Health System's Leadership Conference, Virginia State Conference of the NAACP, and state convention for the Virginia Association of Health for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
You might say that Desi has not planned for the life she lives, but instead has always worked tirelessly to ensure she is prepared to take on whatever comes her way. Knowing that opportunities and risk-taking often go together, Desi moved to Los Angeles in late 2017 to expand her career as an on-camera talent.
Prior to her move to Los Angeles, she worked full-time as a faculty member at Hampton University in eastern Virginia and a Physical Therapist for Riverside Health System. Additionally, Desi served as Miss Virginia USA 2016 and finished as a Top Ten Finalist in the 2016 Miss USA Competition. Prior to winning Miss Virginia USA in 2015, she held several other titles, including Miss Virginia 2013 (competing in the 2014 Miss America Pageant), National Sweetheart 2012, and Miss Hampton University 2011.

“I Totally Forgot that I Wanted to be a Scientist” with Alan ValeraAlan grew up in The Cornhusker State, which must’ve been quite a cultural shift for his parents who immigrated from Mexico. Like most people who pack up and leave their home country, Alan’s parents wanted a better life for their family. They worked hard on a hog farm while their kids enjoyed the calm of living in wide open spaces and possibilites in Nebraska. Watching “Animal Planet” influenced his childhood dream of becoming a scientist, but science took a back seat as Alan became more consumed by the pursuit of athletic excellence than elephants. Alan earned a teaching grant and became the teacher his parents not-so-secretly wanted him to become. But the pandemic and its impact on this students, the curricula and his mental health left Alan with a strong desire to make a shift. He purchased a “Scuba Diving for Dummies” book, practiced holding his breath underwater, and booked a flight to Costa Rica for a 3-month scuba diving internship. Rich Coast Diving offered the most value for their PADI Zero to Hero program where Alan went from became became a scuba Dive Master. Alejandra Ospina grew up in a poor neighborhood marked by gangs and violence. At a young age, she heard someone speak English and that sparked her curiosity about languages and people that spoken them. She leaned on her Colombian culture of perseverance to teach herself English from her sister’s Cher CD. A degree in Sociology and an insatiable curiosity about the world led her to pursue careers that integrated travel with helping people. Now Alejandra is working on the educational and marketing side of medicinal plant industry. She joins us from Switzerland to share what is next for both this work and her future.
Alejandra also shares her experiences with racism as a biracial Afro-Colombian as well how the curly hair she was once teased about has become her calling card.

Laura felt like the dumb one (which she is not) in her very intelligent family. An intelligent family with boundless support for both her and her brother. When she plunged into Fundamentalist Christianity? Support. When she changed her degree plan in college? Support? When she left her hotel-based event planner/PR position to become a school counselor? Support. When she took a leave of absence from that job to come out as gay, end her 15-year marriage, and start her own life coaching business? Support, support, support.
The self-described “people pleaser” and “good little white girl” fell in love with coaching when she hired a coach for herself. She was feeling overwhelmed with her career and feeling stuck. Through sessions with her coach, she re-framed her circumstances and focused on her desires so she could move toward a career change. Nickels Coaching was Laura’s opportunity to normalize the changes we all face when we reach the point in life when we want to dismantle where we’ve been to get us on the path to where we want to be. The point where we pivot to purpose.

Carlee Jackson Bohannon knew she wanted to work with sharks when she was 5 or 6 years old. The fearless little girl who jumped into a pool before she could swim, grew up to become a shark and sea turtle scientist. Interested in researching the impact of human activities and urban development on sharks and their habitats, Carlee earned a master of science degree in marine biology and worked with the university's shark tagging program to research the effects of provisioning tourism on nurse sharks in Belize. Carlee is passionate about research and field work, striving to contribute to the conservation of sharks and sea turtles.
Throughout Carlee's career, she noted the real barriers to access in marine and shark science. From limitations in education, awareness of the field, and the "pay to play" atmosphere of internship programs; being "the only" motivated Carlee to become "the first". She is eager to introduce more minority students to the field of marine science so no one else has to be "the only" in classes, in graduate programs, and on boats. She worked as a Research Associate for the New College of Florida, a team member of the the Disney Conservation team, a Marine Turtle Specialist at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, and an environmental educator in South Florida. In 2022, Carlee received the Justice in Equity, Diversity & Inclusion award by the Florida Marine Science Educators Association.
A chance encounter on Twitter introduced Carlee to the other 3 other founding members of what became Minorities in Shark Science (MISS). As the Director of Communications, Carlee and the MISS team believes diversity in scientists creates diversity in thought, which leads to innovation. MISS creates paid opportunities for gender minorities of color to enter the field of shark sciences. The organization also aims to break financial and accessibility barriers to for current and future gender minorities of color interested in this field.

Tisha Starks had the kind of dad who was driven to create businesses and generate income on his own terms - terms that often didn’t include a W-2. But no one in her small Virginia town seemed wired the same way and her dad didn’t have a business plan for her to follow. When she asked the question, “Why can’t I start 50 businesses?”, no one has a good answer for her. No one guided her towards books or podcasts or internships or gave her tangible resources to build from. So Tisha did it on her own. Even as she was building a successful career in the finance and financial technology industries for some of the largest banking institutions in The United States, Tisha was hustling on the side. She sold accessories from her car to build the capitol she needed for her first restaurant. Did it matter that she didn’t really cook? Nope. This natural collaborator selected the right people and created the right opportunity for everyone to achieve more together.
Tisha doesn’t think about limitations, so why not take her budding empire across borders to Colombia? Did she speak Spanish? Nope. Did she know anyone who could provide guidance through the intricacies of the international business development before she and her husband selected Santa Marta as their home way from home? Also, no. Has she created 3 successful business in less than 2 years with bilingual staff, local business advisors, and plans to expand to conferences and travel expertise? ¡Claro que sí! Tisha and her husband discovered that moving abroad made them time wealthy and she was able to reconnect with parts of herself after shedding everything they owned in Atlanta.

With a 20+ year retail career, Khalika Abrams has worked for brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Club Monaco, and Burberry. In her most recent retail position as Creative Director, for A’gaci, she worked side by side with the company owners to spearhead an aggressive country-wide expansion and solidify the brand’s identity.
Overseeing visual merchandising and construction, she was hyper-collaborative with the buying, operations, marketing, e-Commerce, and planning & allocation teams. In 2021, Khalika stepped away from retail to start her own company, Kurated LA. The mission: a commitment to helping clients reduce overconsumption by being thoughtful about their purchases, and utilizing resources like thrifting and upcycling. Khalika has also done styling for public figures such as Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay.
Today Kurated LA is a ‘work in progress’, in the middle of a rebranding.

Laree Thomas is motivation and inertia personified. Growing up in New York where her family spent weekends in The Village exploring different foods and cultures, she was bitten by the travel bug early. Planning international trips with her girlfriends changed how she spent her disposable income. Instead of luxury shoes, she booked trips. Instead of luxury meals, she booked trips. Each trip exposed her to cultures where she is loved and respected, and she spent extended time in Asia and Europe.
Living in Ghana since 2018, Laree is no longer fighting to be seen as a human being. She is building on skills she developed from careers in fashion, homelessness prevention, and education to advocate for children and vulnerable populations abroad. This nomad has adapted to the pace of a life where she feels accomplished if gets 2 things done in a day. Laree also has to consider issues of pay disparity, gentrification, the privilege of being an American abroad, and the impact of AI on remote work; her new life has opened up time for Laree to learn about herself. In fact, she located the tribe in Ghana from which she is descended.

Erin Hattamer grew up in a small town with a Roman Catholic upbringing. Samantha Sacchi’s family tree is rooted in entrepreneurship. Roots that stretch to Venezuela, Spain, Italy and Lebanon have given her a global perspective on how people determine their priorities. Procuring 2 bachelors degrees and a masters degrees in different countries helped her set a gauge for difficulty in pursuit of a goal. It showed her that earning hard things requires hard word. Submitting resumes to countless of jobs after college, waiting to be picked for an entry-level position felt neither hard, nor earned. Samantha’s style was more the “re-tool the job description of an internship so well that they offer you a full-time role”.
Until it wasn’t.
A health scare during a time when she grinding in her career lead her to spend 8 life-changing days in Spain. Eight days to know that her next path had to align with her emotions and her passions. She spent a year in Australia undoing the career path to build her new vocation. Now, Samantha expands consciousness and brings her clients back to their souls through teaching, facilitation, coaching, mentoring and consulting. Through her business, The Self Club, she creates powerful spaces and programs for people to experience their true power. Samantha has lived in a dozen cities across 4 continents and has no doubt that the bottom line of life is Love. All her work leads back to that.

Being the daughter and granddaughter of immigrants means you shoulder the hopes of having a career with income stability and notoriety. At least it did for Katrina Austria Marrero, the first person in her nuclear family to graduate from college in the USA. Katrina’s identity has driven her to pursue careers where she is able to influence marginalized communities toward opportunities that open their lives to choices. In many instances, her sphere of influence was strongest in in educational fields, where she made sure she had a seat at the table. Then she whittled a new table by founding True Student Athletes; a provider of personalized services in academics, college admissions and early career advising for student-athletes from grades 6-12 & beyond in various geographic markets. Her sphere expanded to roles where she managed partnerships and supported employers with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). A mom of 2 young boys with a new full-time role who’s also managing a business with her husband, Katrina is leaning in in ways Sheryl Sandberg could never.

Denaya Jones-Reid was looking to earn extra money, not a whole career, when she worked at Charlene’s Kitchen. Observing a Black woman who, not only had her own catering business, but one who was who was superior in her craft, opened the door to a career in hospitality. Dee later found that earning a degree in public relations gave her the technical skills needed in a business. Any business, not just hospitality. Being in the industry in a variety of roles best prepared her for a growing career in the craft cocktail space. As a managing partner at Seelbach’s, a company created to match small batch bourbon and wine distilleries with curious drinkers; Dee got a hardcore crash course in licensing, retail, packaging, and human resources. And because not all 24 hours of her day were filled; Dee co-hosts the Soul Palate podcast to normalize the Black and Brown palate, speak about current events and topics within food, beverage and the world.

Celine Monfort grew up in the very beautiful French Caribbean island of Martinique. This Type A child was focused on becoming a lion veterinarian in Africa and attended an intensive preparation school after high school to get her there. Interactions with super smart students who were the teensiest bit ignorant pivoted her veterinary path to one where she earned a masters degree in economics and marketing. Eight years in ultra-competitive cosmetic marketing industry in role most people would leave after 2 months gave her the skills she needed to excel in the scuba dive industry. Since then, her life opened to a career as both a documentarian and scuba dive shop owner. One who rarely gets to scuba dive, but one who is changing the face of the industry.

Ed was a kid who loved poetry, music and art. But when you have parents who grew up without electricity or running water, a career as a broke artist isn’t a path they want for their son. Luckily, the entrepreneurial seed was planted early when found success in high school selling custom-made accessories. Attending an HBCU gave him more than a nickname - it gave him the pride, perseverance, and power he needed to get through a rigorous master’s degree in human behavior. Ed was prepared to take the corporate world by storm. The corporate world had other plans. When Rob Poynor was 7 or 8 years old, he went to a parade and decided he would be in a marching band when when he went to college. When he was recruited to a scholastically competitive university that offered to pay for half of his tuition, he declined the offer because the school didn't have a marching band. From a kid growing up in rural, isolated Arkansas; higher education was prominent in the state. Only, he didn't know many people who actually went, so it was a surprise when people snickered at his plan to study law with no intention of becoming an attorney. Rob's plan was simply to pursue things he was interested in, good at, and helped others. And he was doing well. His first year was a breeze. Then a revelation about his sexuality and the confusion of what that would mean to his friends and family changed that path. Rob worked in accounting. He kept a business owner and his wife from spending all their money on useless stuff. He opened a comedy club. No matter what he did, he somehow consistently ended up in higher education. And stayed there for 33 years. Recently retired, he reflects on how his servant leader style, allyship, and "bull in a China closet" approach to diversity, equity and inclusion made him the professional that his students needed, his staff admired, and the higher ups feared. Oh, and he shares how Arkansas has a culture of its own.

Sadie Jordan describes herself as never one to be quiet. Raised in the northeast of the United States where cultures other than hers were the focus, she was heavily influenced by the Afro-Costa Rican women in her family who put social justice on a pedestal. Education and excellence were modeled by these influential women and Sadie knew she had big shoes to fill, only she wasn’t sure how.
She worked in a variety of jobs where she excelled, but none were in service of her passion for travel or social justice. A chance encounter at a hostel during a solo trip exposed her the tourism industry. She immediately enrolled at a community college with a surprisingly robust tourism program and the resources this adult learner needed academically and personally. Sadie became the go-to person for culturally-based experiences at the tourism company she worked for, something her Harvard-graduate colleagues could not. She collected research, created itineraries, and proposed countless ideas to her management on curating experiences for people of color that could set them apart in the industry. When those proposals fell on deaf ears, she knew she had the skills to do it on her own and founded Soul Life Travel.
Soul Life Travel specializes in unique, authentic, carefully design tours that include the Afro-Costa Rican and Afro-Latinx heritage and culture that are often left out of Costa Rican travel itineraries. Additionally, they partner with locally-run providers in order to combat the irresponsible tourism that creates an intensifying threat to local culture the exploitation of local communities. Soul Life Travel removes the burden from travelers to find experiences that speak to them.

Randall Arauz graduated from the University of Costa Rica in 1988. His early career was focused on sea turtle conservation, when he worked as the Administrator of the Green Turtle Research Station and then as the Director of the Leatherback National Park in the early 90s. Throughout the 90s he worked as an associate researcher at the University of Costa Rica and founded the Costa Rican NGO PRETOMA in 1997 to initiate on-going community-based sea turtle conservation projects and to seek solutions for the high shrimp trawling induced mortality on sea turtles. In the late 90s he became interested in the longline fleet and its impact on sea turtles, and for 10 years directed an observer program that resulted in the generation of unique longline fisheries data in the region. During this lapse he stumbled upon the shark finning issue and started an on-going campaign that has had domestic, regional, and global impact. Randall has appealed to the Costa Rican legal system repeatedly to obtain benchmark victories, such as the closure of the green turtle fishery in 1999, a mandate to land sharks with fins attached in 2006, an impediment to initiate a Tuna Farm project in 2007, a ban on the use of private docks by the Taiwanese shark fishing fleet in 2010, and a ban on shrimp trawling in 2013. He has officially represented Costa Rica at international conventions such as CMS (2007) and CITES (2013) and has been a member of the official Cocos Island Regional Management Council since 2011. He has held memberships in several IUCN Specialist Groups (Sea Turtles, Sharks and Connectivity Conservation). He currently serves as Marine Conservation Policy Advisor for the Colorado based non-profit Fins Attached Marine Research and Conservation. Mr. Johnny Ross was a theater kid who knew his career path would be different than anything his school in rural New Jersey prepared him to do. He enrolled in cosmetology school with the goal of working in a hair salon, but the potential for inconsistency in hair coloring and the 9021-no atmosphere of a salon left him unfulfilled. So, Johnny pivoted to make-up and taught himself everything he needed to know on every single brand at Sephora. Under the guidance of a Store Director who lead by example, he felt empowered to create a haircare training program for the make-up and skincare-loving staff to break into the untapped hair service products in the store.
Armed with years of professional freelance make-up artist (MUA) experience at New York Fashion Week, weddings, events, and a college degree he earned in his late 20s; Johnny was about to break through to the career he busted his ass to build. That is, until a global pandemic no one saw coming lost him not one, but two, career-changing opportunities.
The pandemic gave him the clarity to see that having a social media presence was his currency to securing work in marketing. Truth is, Hannah wanted to have a career in the sports industry. She is big into to sports, but not so big into running herself ragged for no pay. So she shifted her major and found she had a knack for business. Hannah honed her skills, applied them to competitions, and started her own business to fill a void in the food & beverage industry in her area. And it went really well…until it didn’t. She graduated with debt and took a job that would pay her bills. But living paycheck to paycheck was taking a toll on her financially and personally, so she put her extensive research skills to good use and found a job that paid much better. Over the course of two and half years, Hannah changed jobs 5 times and, ultimately, increased her salary from $40,000 to $115,000. Hannah did experience push back from managers when she presented detailed, highly researched and data-driven rationale for salary increases; which led to wonder what the secrecy in salaries was all about.

Nicole Lang has the patience of a turtle, the kindness of a saint, and the cheekbones of a supermodel. I mean, she doesn’t need that last bit to be successful in her career as a real estate agent, but it doesn’t hurt.
Real estate was not her dream career when she graduated from high school. Being a veterinarian was. But she met her future ex-husband shortly after graduating and moved to Germany for his career in the military. She worked at a German insurance company that did not fulfill her in any way, shape or form. After moving back to The States and purchasing a home for her growing family, the agent she was working with recognized that she had the chops to be a successful real estate agent. Thinking it was something she could do for a couple hours around her family responsibilities, she gave it go...and quickly realized that she’d need to work hard. Harder than she anticipated. Harder than the people on “Million Dollar Listing” and “Selling Sunset”.
You will see her signature red lip, her penchant for being a social butterfly, and passion for supporting veterans. What you won’t see is the hours she spends generating leads, completing countless courses, mentoring new agents, carefully reviewing copious legal documents, or explaining “love equity” to a home owner. You won’t see that, after her divorce, she challenged to herself to purchase a home on her own in 5 years. And did it in 2.
Part bougie, part country, this talented networker who loves her kids and her chickens will change what you think you know about a career as a real estate agent.

When a 5-year-old Natasha was asked what she wanted to be she grew up, she had 3 clear goals: pig farmer, Bob Hope's wife, writer. Adult Natasha is a vegetarian, her partner is not a philandering comedian, but she has written the first historical fiction novel on the Black Madonna called "Finding Le Negrita" that is being published in September 2022.

Born in Brooklyn to Costa Rican and Panamanian parents, her focus was on family and education. In fact, her father could not fathom why she would need friends when she was being raised in a brownstone bursting at the seams with aunts, uncles, grandparents and uncles and annual trips to Costa Rica to spend with even more people linked to her by DNA and stories. Even after an idiot guidance counselor told her she didn't have what it takes to got to Vassar College; Natasha earned an undergraduate degree (from Vassar!), 2 Master's degrees, a PhD. Her passion is to amplify the experiences of people of African descent and enslavement as a professor and author.
The powder-keg of race in the United States compelled Natasha and her husband to move to Costa Rica with their children because, while she and her husband could never have predicted COVID, no part of them was surprised by the 45th President. Even with her self-described "pitiful Spanish", Natasha is able to live a more intentional writing life where, among many other things, she interviewed Costa Rica's first Black Vice-President for Essence magazine and a writes a monthly series about race and diversity in the Tico Times. She is the founder and host of the Tengo Sed Writing Retreats, an exclusive gathering of global BIPOC writers who gather in Costa Rica.
Oh, and she also became a certified yoga teacher.

Fletcher Cleaves is a Memphis native who simply cannot sit still. He dreamed of a life as an athlete who had the freedom to spend as much time in the water (because it's HOT in The South, y'all) and own the Hangout House where his family and friends would gather. As a college freshman with a football scholarship to Lambuth University, his vision was within reach. That is, until a driver suspected of texting while driving changed Fletcher's path. As a quadriplegic whose parents lost their jobs in order to become their son's full-time caregivers, Fletcher still couldn't sit still. He re-enrolled in college and earned a degree in Computer Science. He also began promoting the importance of safe driving and overcoming adversity as a professional speaker on ESPN, a National Safety Transportation Board (NSTB) event in Washington D.C., as well as at many schools, colleges, sports teams, community organizations, and businesses. My dad was the first person in his family to go to college. But Life is going to Life, and Meredith went from working in restaurants to being scouted for a job she'd never heard of to seeing her 'for funsies' TikTok account go from 2,000 followers to 50,000 in one day. Through her growing content creation business, Babies of Steele, Meredith has found that people come to her page for the funny; but they stay to see a woman verbally process her mental health, her almost 200-pound body (gasp!), and life that Pinterest did not build. Oh, and she leveraged her followers to help send 40 LGBTQ+ and allied teens to a weeklong overnight leadership camp, called New Leaders Project.

Growing up in between Puerto Rico and the United States, Aida went through several surgeries to treat a rare cancer her eye. She fought through a tough childhood that culminated in her putting her career on hold to care for an ailing parent. Aida had no idea going in for a job as the lunch lady in her kid's school would lead her down the path she was meant to be on -- serving children and adults with Austism through a career in Speech Pathology. With a brand new Bachelor's degree, a job where she's building space for underserved populations and boundless confidence; this survivor is creating a space for her kids and her husband to find their own happiness.

Victoria Williams has always carved her own path, but made sure she created one that others could follow. She started playing tennis when she was 6 years old, when a coach took notice of her talent and took extra initiative to develop her skills. It was a bit of an escape from the rough area she lived with her family, but it also made her a bit of an "other" between her two lives. That was part of the reason she selected an HBCU, where she could be the first of her siblings to attend college. While a degree in medical field was stable, it did not feed her creative side. Enter social media, where she could stretch those muscles and find a way toward a new career -- a career that let's her tell her stories her way. A career that lets people see that a queer, Black, Millennial, managing her anxiety and a beautiful relationship is thriving. Oh, and she organized a protest.
