My friend Mattea Henderson (former Miss Earth Canada and Miss Intercontinental Canada) suggested this as a topic last week.
We talk alot about advocacies, platforms and raising funds. That's all well and good.
But have you ever thought that MAYBE you could do MORE for your advocacy by NOT competing in a pageant?
Pageants take up alot of time, energy and money. If you were to redirect those into your advocacy or platform, wouldn't that be more effective than trying to do the pageant at the same time?
It's a question worth asking and that's what we're discussing in this podcast episode.

Pageantry and mental health sometimes aren't the best of friends.
This episode is a 2017 interview I did with my dear friend Alicia Van Schoonhoven who was vying for the title of Miss Galaxy Australia at the time.
I did a total of ten interviews which were then published in a best-selling book 'From Fear to Freedom'. The interviews were all with women who had survived incredibly traumatic times and gone on to thrive regardless.

Everyone compares. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that.
We compare house prices, fuel prices, insurance prices.
Where it goes wrong for us humans is we make it personal. We make up crappy meanings. And then we wonder why we need a social media detox.

Getting sponsorship is DIFFICULT. Getting monetary sponsorship is even MORE difficult.
So guess what? That means you've got to PUT IN THE WORK.
It also means you have to be great at selling yourself and what you have to offer - the very things that being an entrepreneur or starting your own business will teach you!
Pay close attention to the concept of WIIFM and my Fiverr hack.
You put the two of those together alone and you should blow 99% of your competition out of the water.

I've been asking in the Facebook group what topics you'd like me to discuss, and one topic that came up was motivation.
Specifically, what to do when you've lost your motivation with so many pageants been postponed and/or cancelled.
Turns out that although there are many reasons why someone might lose their motivation, the way to get it back is pretty universal.
I also briefly introduce the concept of LEVERAGE. And if you get and understand this concept, you'll never have to worry about motivation again!

The FIRST decision you'll make when starting your own business is WHAT you're going to do.
The typical advice is to pick something you love.
Whilst that's a great start, it's simply NOT enough.
There are many things I love doing that no-one is ever going to pay me for. Singing in the shower is a great example.
So what are the other questions you need to ask yourself before picking your niche or business idea?

A friend of mine asked me this morning what I thought she should do about the abuse she'd been receiving on her social media since winning her pageant.
She asked me as she knew I'd dealt with my share of hate in 2020 and then some.
There are two truths here.
One is that some "pageant fans" aren't true fans at all. They're only fans of their favourites winning. And if that doesn't happen, they become abusive.
The second truth is that the more successful you become, the more you have a target painted on your back.
The trick is to embrace the hate rather than run away from it.
That way you become more RESILIENT, can deal with more hate than you ever thought possible and go on to even BIGGER SUCCESSES.

Let's not complicate pageants. Let's simplify.
If you want to win a pageant, reverse engineer it.
Look at the scoring system, the past winners, the past judges... and then go to work.
There's so much talk about being a positive role-model, but we'll never agree on what that means.
What we can agree on is that virtually every pageant queen of a major system is an INFLUENCER in some way with a substantial following.
And the skillset of growing a crazy passionate fanbase is 100% transferrable to winning your next title.

Have you ever been accused of something you didn't do?
Have you ever been attacked on social media, sometimes out in the open but usually behind the scenes (gotta love that passive aggression)?
2020 had some amazing LOWS for me. On top of being labelled a bully I've had Directors tell their contestants not to work with me, others block me for no reason and then others generally spread rumours about me and my intentions rather than just talking to me or messaging me directly.
I tell you this not to complain. I tell you this as a sign that YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY.
The more successful you are, the more criticism you will attract.
The more you stand out, the more you are a target.
My point is this - running away from CRITICISM (unfounded as it may be) is tantamount to you running away from SUCCESS.
Cos people love a success story - until it gets a bit too much. Then the claws come out.
And it's not about you. It's never about you.
It's about them. Them and their own inadequacies.
So as I say in this episode - treat criticism like a vaccine. You need to expose yourself to a little bit of it in order to become immune.
And maybe now's a good time for a booster shot.

Depending on whom you believe, somewhere between 70 and 90% of communication is NON-verbal.
Said differently, you should be focussing less on WHAT you say and more on everything else surrounding it during your interview.
And knowing how to build RAPPORT with your judges is the key to making sure you walk out leaving an amazing impression.

To win in pageantry you need to STAND OUT.
But HOW can you stand out when coaches are telling every one of their students THE SAME THING?
Say this in interview. Walk this way on stage. Wear this dress. This colour. These shoes.
One thing's for sure: it's difficult to stand out when you walk, talk and look the same as everyone else!
Whilst there are certain core fundamentals that every successful pageant competitor must do in order to perform at their best, it's equally important that you find AND express what makes you unique.
And with an increase in first-time pageant competitors winning major national and international titles, it's worth asking yourself whether your coach is treating you as an individual or just as another number.
