-The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Episode 018 Robert Soice I was born in northern Indiana and served a 24 year Army career between 1985 and 2009. I retired as a First Sergeant. Upon retirement I entered Civil Service as an employee for the United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) as a Program Analyst. I have worked for the Medical Recruiting Brigade as well as the USAREC HQ Health Services Directorate in that capacity. I've been riding motorcycles for well over a decade. I joined the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association ® in 2014 and was a member of the Kentucky Chapters in Radcliff and Louisville. I am currently the CVMA® Region 2 Representative responsible for members in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Prior to that I served for 5 years as the CVMA Kentucky State Representative and I was also an officer at the Chapter level. I've been married to R. Kim Soice for over 20 years; she is also a retired Army First Sergeant having served for 26 years. -The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Episode 017 Jason Elmore and Eddie Carey I am Jason Elmore! I am co-founder of Bullitt Bike fest. I work in the IT field. I have been with my wife Sonja for 15 years and we married in 2016. Last year we adopted 5 children. Life is full of adventure and chaos but we are blessed! I have lived in Bullitt County since 2009 and love it here! I met my co-founder Eddie Carey when I moved here. I love putting on the Bullitt Bike fest event and bringing people from near and far together that love bikes. I have been riding since 2006. I am Eddie Carey. I am co-founder of Bullitt Bike fest along with Jason Elmore. I have been married to Michelle Carey for 17 years and together for 21 years. I work for Fed Ex Freight and have been there for 14 years. I was born and raised in Bullitt County. I have been an avid biker since 2008. Michelle and I love going on bike runs or just going out to ride. We met as neighbors and quickly became best friends. Eddie was even Best Man in my wedding in 2016. Bike Fest came about with he and I sitting in my garage throwing darts, drinking beer and talking about doing our own bike fest. We started putting ideas on paper and with help from our wives, family, and friends the dream was born. This will be our third year. Each year we are learning, adding and improving! We host Bike Nights at Cabbana Bar and Grill in Shepherdsville every Monday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. We are also branching out and hosting a Bike Show on June 18, at Cabbana’s Bar and Grill and this event is for all ages. He has ridden and held his motorcycle endorsement in Kentucky since 1977. He is recently retired from General Electric and have been an active Rider Coach/Instructor since 2007. Year to date, He has taught over 100 riding classes and over 1,000 individual students, and conducted public driver license exams for more than 500 applicants. For the past 10 years he has managed a training site in Indiana. He has been trained and accredited in multiple riding curriculums, including the most current MSF BRC Updated that we teach at Bluegrass HD. He has been an observer for rider ed quality assurance and participate in a rider coach mentoring program.

– The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Episode 015 Vicki Sanfelipo, RN – Executive Director, Accident Scene Management/Road Guardians Known as “Spitfire” to her friends, Vicki is the author of, “A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist”. She established the non-profit organization Accident Scene Management (ASM) in 1996 in order to reduce injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists through First Response training. She has volunteered as the Director of ASM for 25 years and was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2020. Vicki worked for over 25 years in hospital nursing. She has been riding for 35 years, is a member of the Iron Butt Association, and is the lead medic the antique motorcycle cross country events; The Motorcycle Cannonball, and The Cross Country Chase. Vicki she says that serving the motorcycling public is a labor of love and also says that “Motorcycles Saved my Life”. Championed a much-needed refresh to helping injured riders, by providing actual services and financial strategies instead of the usual poker run. In her position she has created training manuals and the vision of services that BikerDown would provide injured riders including memberships programs, medical equipment and help with funeral expenses. She handles the day-to-day operations including but not limited to Help Requests, Fundraising, Donor research, Volunteer management, Grant programs and chapter start up. Founded in Denver Colorado in 2011, we now have chapters all over the country and biker advocates nationwide ready to assist.

Ham also volunteers with other veteran and ministry organizations. He is also a retired Command Sergeant Major with 27 years of experience in the US Army and Indiana Army National Guard with 3 overseas deployments, to Bosnia 2001-2002, Afghanistan 2004-2005 and Iraq 2007-2008. He is a professional entertainer that rides a unicycle, juggles, performs magic, skits and does motivational presentations. He is the former Chair of the Indiana State Soil Conservation Board. He is currently Manager of Silver Creek Water Corporation where he has worked for 32 years. He has served in the State of Indiana as a certified water operator since 1988 and is active in many local and industry organizations. Scott’s hope is that through humor and using people’s experiences, we will initiate change where needed, and support those already doing outstanding works.

Shortly after becoming a CPA, Todd began working in the structured settlement industry for The James Street Group in 1994. The James Street Group was a pioneer in assisting plaintiff attorneys and their clients with their structured settlement needs. Episode 009 The joy of serving veterans with Kevin Bateman, Veteran Service Officer, Washington County, Indiana – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Kevin Bateman started in the army in the early 70s and then entered the National Guard until 2011. He retired as an Operation Sergeant Major and served in Iraq. As a Veteran Service Officer, Kevin’s goal is to serve veterans and their families with everything from plans for compensation, pension, tax, property tax and whatever else he can help with. Since turning 70, he now works part time and has a great assistant to work with him. He encourages every veteran to come in for an interview and find out what benefits they may qualify for.
Highlights of our conversation include: An explanation and the process for getting a needs-based pension. A frequent common illness is hearing loss. The key is to get a diagnosis for an illness. Serving others outside of Washington County. Different service organizations also help veterans. Being in combat is not a requirement for getting help.

Episode 08 How serving in the military supports the leadership of Todd Dunn, President UAW Local 862 – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Todd Dunn is the President of UAW Local 862, serving his fourth consecutive term. The union represents approximately 17,500 active workers of the Kentucky Truck Plant and the Louisville Assembly Plant, nine other units with 400 members within the amalgamated local union. In addition, there are approximately 6000 retirees represented in the prosperous history of UAW Local 862. Todd served his country in the US Army National Guard as a Combat Military Policeman/Investigator during the Iraq-Desert Storm/Desert Shield Tours of Duty and considers it an honor to have served General Schwarzkopf. Todd takes his responsibility seriously and is proud of its history and all the work and contributions made by members with their volunteer work.

Episode 07 A Flying Tiger teacher now serving as a Veterans Service Officer. Featuring Tara Avis, Harrison County – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman One of the best pieces of advice for people serving in the military is to keep a copy of every piece of paper one receives during service and after discharge. That’s the advice of Tara Avis, The Veteran Service Officer who works at the Harrison County Veterans Service Office. Tara is an Army Reserve veteran who served as a logistics specialist. She also worked teaching the Nine Flying Tigers unit at Fort Knox and was stationed in Bardstown, Kentucky. Tara is well trained as a VSO to help with county, State and Federal benefits. Our conversation is filled with tips on how to file claims and she is passionate about helping veterans file, especially for benefits that they may not know they’re eligible for.
Highlights include: To start the claim, one needs Discharge papers from the National Guard or Reserve time-we can help if you don’t have. Preparing records from military time, especially if filing a disability claim. Veterans can file a claim even if they didn’t serve in combat. Eligibility even if hurt in basic training. Handling claims even if injured while on leave. How a buddy statement holds weight when filing a claim.

Episode 06 Uncovering benefits that veterans deserve and can receive with Gordon Smith, Veterans Service Officer, City of Indianapolis – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Gordon Smith is a Veterans Service Officer, VSO, for the City of Indianapolis and a Commissioner for the Indianapolis Juvenile Detention Advisory Board. He is the former CEO of the PTSD Recovery Program, a non-profit that contributes to the healing of veterans, first responders, women and those re-entering society after imprisonment suffering from PTSD and other stress-related disorders. Gordon has received many awards for his service. After Desert Storm, Gordon resigned his commission and eight years later re-entered as an enlisted guy. He worked as a medic and ended up in Iraq in 2005 and later worked at the US Embassy in Baghdad. Gordon helps veterans file claims and uncover benefits they may not know they are eligible for. He advises that if veterans don’t file claims, they are hurting other veterans that need them. He explains why in our conversation and why veterans should come forward and speak with a VSO.
We discuss: The mission of helping veterans walk through the complex process of filing a claim. How Gordon filed close to 350 claims last year and 58% of those veterans had never gone to the VA for help. The military has changed a lot over the past eight years. Newer veterans have filed claims, but not those from Vietnam, Desert Storm, National Guard Reserves. The other benefits that go beyond disability. Even if you think you don’t qualify, contact a Veteran Service Officer, VSO. Mental health issues needs are addressed and are not a sign of weakness. Traumatic Brain injuries, military sexual trauma and PTSD are issues being addresses properly. Community organizations in Indianapolis are becoming more collaborative.

Episode 05 It’s not mental health. It’s just health. Featuring Dr. Jeff Romer, NCPsyA, LMFT, LCAC, Clinical Director at PCS

Dr. Jeff Romer is Clinical Director of Personal Counseling Service in Indiana. Dr. Jeff has training in divinity studies, marriage and family counseling and has a second doctorate in psychoanalysis. At the PCS clinic the counseling is based on self-psychology and has a spiritual dimension to it. The clinic is based in southern Indiana, serving over 14 thousand people. Nearly 50 percent of the clients are below federal poverty levels and about 60 percent are young people. There are also satellite offices, including one in the Floyd County Jail. Dr. Jeff appreciates it when someone says, “There’s no such thing as mental health. It’s just health.” So, the conversation in this episode addresses an important aspect of health.
Highlights include: The broader aspect of mental health today includes the term spirituality. Depression and anxiety increase, especially at the end of the pandemic. The increase of teens having suicidal thoughts. Treating patients in-person again with some telehealth appointments. People may seek help when there is pain in their lives. The generational shift in understanding PTSD and war trauma.

Episode 04 The VA has changed, and veterans should not hesitate to ask for help. Featuring Denise Vaughn, Scott County Veterans Service Officer – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman The Veteran’s Administration has changed, but not everyone knows of the positive changes. Denise Vaughn is a highly decorated veteran who is working to prove how many people at the VA want to help, and she shows that with her work with the County Veterans Service Officers, based in Scott County, Indiana.
Denise served in the active United States Army as a medic until she retired after 20 years of service. During her time in the military, she was deployed multiple times to Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. She has a list of awards and medals, including the Bronze Star.
Our conversation busts through the misconceptions and she gives solid advice on how veterans can get help, even if they don’t live in her county. Denise dedicates herself to help her fellow service members.
Highlights of our conversation include: Before you get out of service, take the time to make copies of all your records. Get an “exit” physical. The importance of keeping up to date and continual training for her job. Visit the Indiana website to find resources in your area of the country. Denise’s office has access to the federal system, unlike local VFW or American Legion. Explanations of how the VA work and vets should not hesitate in asking for help. The importance of filing a claim. A case study of $139 thousand in back pay awarded that’s tax exempt. Not being in combat does not disqualify a person from applying.

Episode 03 Understanding the work of the Teamsters union with John Stovall, President, Teamsters Local 783, Kentucky – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman John Stovall serves as President for the Teamsters Local 783 in Louisville, Kentucky. He has expanded their presence throughout the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the community by serving as a Trustee for Teamsters Joint Council 94. John also serves on the Public Sector Division for the International Teamsters Union, and as the Recording Secretary for the Greater Louisville Central Labor Council.
In addition, John also works as the Secretary Treasurer for the KY Labor-Management Committee and is as a Board Member for the KY Prevent Child Abuse Association.

Episode 02 Maximizing benefits once an injury case is resolved with Jason Lazarus, Founder & CO, Synergy Settlements – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Jason Lazarus, J.D., LL.M., CSSC, MSCC is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Synergy Settlement Services. The business grew out of a need for helping injury victims and to give lawyers a resource for understanding and resolving complex catastrophic claims. Maximizing benefits once a case is resolved is a specialty area that a trial lawyer may not have the expertise in. The Synergy team of lawyers works on the case after the case by handling the tough issues at settlement, including lien resolution, Medicare compliance, public benefit preservation and complex settlement planning techniques. Dr. Mark Barrett Episode 01 Why physicians won’t take on personal injury cases with Dr. Mark Barrett, Medical Director, Catera Health Systems – The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman Welcome to the premier episode of The Colonel in Your Corner with Karl Truman, a personal injury attorney based in Louisville, Kentucky. People don’t realize that after an injury, such as a car accident, and treatment in an ER, they may need further follow up help from a physician. Patients become lost or distressed when they find out not all physicians will take them as patients. Most doctors prefer not treating those serious injury cases because it’s not their specialty, the massive amount of paperwork or time required. Dr. Mark Barrett was a surgeon working in an Emergency Medical Department and he saw the need to help patients who couldn’t find a doctor to treat their injuries occurred by an accident, especially if the injury was not immediately apparent at the time of the incident. In the Louisville, Kentucky area, doctors frequently refer clients to Dr. Mark, who now serves as Medical Director of Catera Health Systems, working with a team of specialists who help patients recover and get their lives back on track.
