We’re on a mission to celebrate, empower, and entertain Dads, could-be Dads, and father-figures of all stripes. We deliver powerful stories to inform and inspire as we build a movement of dads who embrace their heroic calling. Dads need their own superhero league to take on the challenges of today, where they can discuss ways to find solutions and take action. That’s where we come in.
I sat down with investigative journalist and author Sharyl Attkisson to discuss the alarming intersection of Big Pharma, government regulators, and scientific journals. Sharyl shared insights from her new book “Follow the Science,” which delves into the propaganda, censorship, and conflicts of interest that have become endemic to our public health system. We also talked about Sharyl’s background in journalism and what she thinks about today’s media landscape.

I sat down with Christina Hoff Sommers, feminist philosopher and author of “The War Against Boys,” to discuss the growing struggles of boys in a culture increasingly dictated by a toxic strain of Marxist feminism. Christina explains how, now that institutional barriers to female opportunity have all but disappeared, the feminist movement has become dominated by a faction that sees the world as a zero-sum game and therefore is fundamentally opposed to the flourishing of boys and men. Schools, in particular, systematically neglect boys and pathologize their natural instincts, while elevating the psychological and behavioral tendencies of girls as inherently morally superior. Christina breaks down how this imbalance is shaping a generation of young men who are falling behind not only relative to their female peers but also in absolute historic terms.

I sat down with Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, professor of medicine at Stanford University and a leading voice in public health policy, to explore the catastrophic failures of the COVID response and what they reveal about the scientific establishment and government institutions. Dr. Bhattacharya argues that the heavy-handed approach taken during the pandemic, from lockdowns to vaccine mandates and everything in between, reflects deeper issues in the cultural norms of the scientific community. He became well known during 2020 as one of the most prominent critics of these policies and co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration, which outlined an alternative course of action focused on protecting high-risk individuals. Drawing on his additional background in economics, Dr. Bhattacharya also outlines how he believes we can reform the NIH, CDC, FDA, and the American healthcare system more broadly to improve outcomes and restore trust in our institutions.

I sat down with Maj Toure, founder of Black Guns Matter, to discuss his perspectives on systemic racism, the history of gun control, and why all Americans should value the Second Amendment. He explains how early gun control policies were purposely designed to disarm black Americans and argues that modern gun laws continue this legacy. Although the voters who support gun control don’t generally harbor racist intent, the fact remains that the burden of legal punishment falls most heavily on the black community. Maj believes that this has been a long-running experiment to acclimate Americans to gun control, while concealing its harms by focusing enforcement on marginalized communities, whose struggles are largely misunderstood or ignored by both conservatives and liberals. He also shares his experience educating urban communities about safe gun ownership, conflict resolution, and how to navigate the obstacles created by gun control.

I sat down with Michael Shellenberger, journalist and author of “Apocalypse Never,” “San Fransicko,” and the upcoming “Pathocracy,” to discuss the collapse of trust in elite institutions and its implications for civilization. Michael explains how the erosion of common sense has left the greatest American cities in chaos, especially in his home state of California. Democratic elites, both within the party and among its media proxies, have become fully insulated from the consequences of their policies and now have backed themselves into an ideological corner. As the gap between rhetoric and reality widens, Michael is a courageous voice of truth in a new ecosystem of independent journalists.

The school choice revolution has begun, providing parents with the power and resources to choose the best educational path for their children. Corey DeAngelis, a leading advocate for school choice and author of “The Parent Revolution,” explains why this movement is gaining unstoppable momentum. The disastrous school closures of 2020 changed the minds of millions of parents from default supporters of public education to vehement opponents, and now, twelve states have implemented universal school choice. Corey is a firm believer that tax dollars intended for education should be in the hands of parents and students, not broken school systems. It’s not just about offering alternatives—it's about breaking up the government monopoly that has long restricted educational opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged communities.

Was Jesus a socialist? Lawrence Reed, President Emeritus of the Foundation for Economic Education, tackles this question in his 2020 book titled just that. Some socialists like to claim Jesus among their ranks, but the Bible says otherwise. In Lawrence’s view, the teachings of Christ emphasized personal responsibility, voluntary charity, and the ethical foundations of freedom. We explore key biblical passages that both directly and indirectly comment on the structure of society and the proper relationship between personal values and government force. While it would be unreasonable to expect direct biblical instruction on the minutiae of contemporary policy issues, the Bible does contain plenty of guiding principles that light the way for us.

Comedian and actor Rob Schneider shares his perspective on the cultural and political shifts that have shaped his journey from a traditional liberal to a vocal critic of the progressive mainstream. Starting with his growing skepticism of vaccine safety around 2012, Rob noticed a stubbornness, and often outright hostility, in the public conversation toward questioning the “expert” managerial class. As a father, his commitment to his children drives his passion for defending the future of America against cultural trends that undermine our freedoms. Rob’s upcoming book, "You Can Do It!: Speak Your Mind, America," currently available for preorder, draws on his personal experiences in Hollywood and his firm belief in free speech.

Playwright, journalist, and comedian Andrew Doyle sheds light on the growing pressures of today’s culture wars and their impact on free speech and public discourse. As the creator of Titania McGrath, his Twitter parody persona, Andrew is an expert at satirizing the worst and most absurd excesses of woke activism. He highlights the intolerance toward internal disagreements within the LGBTQ community and how this has created a false impression of the average gay person’s worldview. Andrew is an important advocate for dissenting voices and creative freedom, using humor to break through the politically correct facade of mainstream culture.

I sat down with senior editor at Reason and host of The Hill’s “Rising” Robby Soave to explore the shifting landscape of media and politics in America. Robby provides a sharp critique of how the media has changed its tune on President Biden’s cognitive state, rapidly pivoting from denial to feigned shock and distress following the debate. He discusses how, although audience capture can corrupt both corporate legacy media and independent social media, the latter is far more resistant to the top-down engineering of public perception. Looking back fondly at the ‘good old days’ of Walter Cronkite may be comforting to some, but in reality, the only difference was the style of presentation. Centralized media institutions have never been, and will never be, unbiased purveyors of truth. With the technology most of us carry in our pockets every day, we have a better opportunity than ever before to make the most of our First Amendment rights.

I sat down with psychologist Tracy Dennis-Tiwary to explore her perspective on anxiety, resilience, and mental health. Tracy argues that anxiety has played a crucial role in driving human innovation and should be embraced rather than avoided. She delves into the challenges faced by Gen Z, emphasizing that their struggles often stem from avoidance and a lack of coping skills rather than anxiety itself. Tracy points out that while social media exacerbates mental health struggles, it isn’t the all-powerful corrupting force it’s often made out to be in public discourse. She also discusses her innovative work in “digital therapeutics,” designing mobile games with the potential to revolutionize mental health care.

I sat down with legal expert Ilya Shapiro to learn more about today’s threats to the rule of law in America. He shares his perspective on why the Trump conviction sets a dangerous precedent that undermines our system of justice. Ilya offers a thorough explanation of why legal rulings from courts are often in tension with the political choices of voters. His upcoming book, "Lawless," outlines how our elite institutions have miseducated the de facto ruling class in America, producing “leaders” who are illiberal and ignorant, or even contemptuous, of our constitutional system. We discuss why colleges, universities, and law schools lost their way, his experience being canceled at Georgetown, and the values that form the foundation of our legal system.

Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy sits down to discuss the importance of engaging with opposing views, the state of American political discourse, and the impact of identity politics. Growing up as the “odd man out” in most rooms he entered, he quickly learned the value of having your views challenged. Vivek shares stories from his upbringing, his perspective on how true diversity drives productive debate, and how his role as a father inspires his public life.

Bill de Blasio served as the 109th Mayor of New York City from 2014 to 2021. He was raised with a deep pride in his Italian-American roots, with grandparents who immigrated from small towns in southern Italy. His parents were affected by McCarthyism, despite no ties to Communist organizations. Experiencing the fallout from those accusations deeply influenced his political outlook. In our conversation, Bill emphasizes his progressive approach to family values and his belief that government can protect and uplift working families. He also reflects on the importance of open dialogue and debate in democracy, stressing the need for understanding and addressing diverse perspectives.

Political scientist, author, and Kentucky State University professor Wilfred Reilly has dedicated years of research to debunking popular, but false, narratives around race, culture, police, and American history. His upcoming book, “Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me,” tackles head-on the myths most commonly spread in American classrooms. As Wilfred has documented throughout his work, the underlying data and historical evidence rarely tell the same story as the dramatic retellings we hear today. However, while often less salacious than our modern mythology, the truth gives far more reason for optimism about the current state of America and our future.

What happens when ideology replaces critical thinking across academia? Philosopher, author, and former professor Peter Boghossian witnessed this firsthand at Portland State University, and his school was not an anomaly. Known for his role in the “Grievance Studies Affair”, exposing the low quality scholarship published in activist-oriented journals, Peter is worried about how this strange fringe of academia has come to dominate universities. He’s now working to revitalize and advocate for what should be the core of education - critical thinking, open debate, and the rigorous pursuit of truth.

Technology journalist and data privacy expert Naomi Brockwell explains the complexities of online privacy and the ever-expanding reach of both government and corporate surveillance. The “if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear” mindset accepted by much of the American public is, best-case scenario, a sign a great privilege and comfort and, worst-case scenario, full-blown head-in-the-sand denial of reality. Almost every device, app, and wifi network you use sends out an unimaginable amount of data all the time. Data brokers sell your information to whoever is willing to pay, and you can be sure that governments are some of their most reliable customers. Naomi shares tons of practical strategies that almost anyone can implement to protect their privacy, money, and freedom while online.

In part two of my conversation with evolutionary biologists Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying, we discuss what evolutionary biology can teach us about sex, gender, adulthood, and religion. With the recent explosion in transgender identification across American society, along with the censorious condemnation of any criticism within polite circles, we must reexamine the nature of human individuality and our fundamental understanding of male and female. Bret and Heather give a thorough explanation of why biological sex evolved in the first place and how it’s actually defined scientifically. We then zoom out to how this particular issue is just one facet of a broader cultural trend that’s undermining our ability to become true adults who are capable of leading productive, fulfilling, and moral lives.

How could a 5th-grader end up being accused of accidental blackface? And how could the school recklessly throwing around that accusation refuse to apologize? Today’s guests are currently on a crusade to answer those questions. This incident touches on crucial issues our society currently faces, especially in our schools. When adults fail to be more mature and measured than the children in their care, inflating honest mistakes into serious accusations of bigotry, they elevate their sensitivities above those of the children and risk causing serious psychological harm. Furthermore, they model a censorious, chastising social dynamic as the ethical norm for those kids and further encourage the excesses of cancel culture, which already dominate our discourse.

Have kids. Get married and have kids. Yes, in that order. But do it now, or at least sooner than you probably think you should, especially if you’re ambitious and on the move. Embrace the chaos. Embrace your nature. Embrace the future. Make it the rock-solid re-bar reinforced concrete foundation of your identity. You might just discover the biggest secret of our age: that having kids is the ultimate act of liberation.
Having kids is an act of rebellion against a culture consumed by corruption and contrived catastrophe. There are plenty of reasons to rebel against our culture, which has produced the highest levels of anxiety and depression we’ve ever seen. We’re wealthier than any people to ever walk this planet, yet we’re increasingly stuck in place, unsure what direction to walk.
Who can blame us? For decades, self-appointed gurus from the left and now increasingly the right have discovered they can build careers by convincing you to reject family, fatherhood, and the future itself. Some proclaim that humanity is a scourge on the planet. This message, couched in concerns about climate change, dominates our elite discourse. Meanwhile, influencers celebrate the single life as liberation from the patriarchy. If that laundry list of left-wing critiques isn’t enough for you, red-pill right-wingers are ready to say “hold my beer.”
If you’re among the millions of people nervous about our planet, our future, and hesitant to bring more people into it, I totally get it, but here’s my challenge to you: take a deep breath, keep an open mind, and stick around to the end of this episode. You’ll be happier for it.

Evolutionary biologists Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying dive into the complexities of human evolution, the downside of rapid technological advancement, and the interplay between cultural software and biological hardware. Bret and Heather discuss the obstacles that stand in the way of ‘good governance,’ how institutions positively and negatively affect the relationship between innovation and human flourishing, and the importance of understanding our evolutionary past to navigate our future. Their insights shed light on how scientific thinking can be applied to major philosophical questions and the challenges facing our society and species in the 21st century. Stay tuned for part two of my conversation with Bret and Heather in the coming weeks!

As a follow-up to last week’s episode on psychoanalysis, today’s guest is Dr. Camilo Ortiz, an expert in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Dr. Ortiz is a Professor of Psychology at Long Island University and a practicing clinical psychologist who is at the forefront of developing innovative treatments for child anxiety. Modern parenting styles tend to accommodate or even encourage avoidant behavior, resulting in children who never have the opportunity to build confidence and competence out in the world and contributing to our current anxiety epidemic. Not only is that bad for our kids’ mental health, it’s contrary to the values of American freedom. If you move through life focused on avoiding your fears, rather than pursuing your values, you’ll pass up on the opportunity to use that freedom to its fullest extent. Dr. Ortiz dives deep into the inner workings of anxiety, how CBT can reset your perceptions of risk and reward, and also shares how his personal journey reflects the psychological preconditions for pursuing the American Dream.

Psychoanalyst and licensed clinical social worker Erica Komisar explains how psychoanalysis really works and how it can help parents better understand and support their children. Contrary to popular belief, psychoanalysis goes far beyond the Freudian theories you may have heard of. The field offers insight into the emotional intricacies of anxiety, attachment issues, and the pivotal role parents play in their child's development and mental health. Understanding how a child’s needs evolve as they grow older is crucial for parents to adjust to each stage and avoid either being emotionally neglectful or becoming overbearing helicopter parents. Childhood has become increasingly stressful in recent years, but with the right approach, parents can course-correct to counter the current cultural tides.

Brad Wilcox wants you to get married. In modern American society, cultural trends across the political spectrum discourage and devalue marriage as an institution, and economic incentives have only exacerbated this predicament. Some argue that marriage is a bad deal for women and others argue that it’s a bad deal for men, and Brad agrees that there are plenty of valid complaints to be made and addressed. However, he’s done his research and the data is clear. Marriage, including many traditional norms, is a net good for men, women, children, and American society as a whole.
Brad is a Professor of Sociology and the Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia. His new book, “Get Married,” lays out all of the hard facts behind what makes marriages work, why people aren’t getting married, and how marriage improves lives.

Eric July, an anarcho-capitalist commentator with BlazeTV and the creative force behind Rippaverse Comics, offers a fresh perspective on diversity in media and shares invaluable insights for young creatives on hustling and ethics in the modern landscape of entrepreneurship. As both a lifelong comic fan and now an industry player in his own right, he believes in taking storytelling seriously and wants to offer an alternative to the the convoluted state of mainstream superhero universes.
Eric also shares how economists like Thomas Sowell and Walter E. Williams triggered his ideological evolution from leftist to full-blown libertarian and opened his eyes to the harm race hustlers cause for young people. From his tumultuous childhood and gang involvement to finding solace and direction in faith, Eric's story is proof that people are better off when they take their future into their own hands.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, only 22% of 8th graders were proficient in civics, and only 13% in US history. If we want our kids to understand our political system, and how it actually works in reality, we’re going to need to role up our sleeves as parents and do it ourselves.
But fear not, dear friends. Dad is here to help. Starting with this video, and throughout the year, I’m going to be breaking down the basics of how our political system was designed, how it seems to work in reality, and what we as citizens can do about it.
So, in the words of civics advocate and Spielberg movie favorite Richard Dreyfuss, we must “teach our kids how to run our country before they are called upon to run it, or someone else will.”

Protecting children from online hazards is an essential part of parenting in the digital age. Dr. Lisa Strohman, a psychologist specializing in the mental health impacts of technology, breaks down the issues surrounding online pornography, video game addiction, and cyberbullying. She shares how parents can navigate the internet minefield, communicate about these topics with their children, and recognize signs that their children are struggling.
Dr. Strohman is also the founder of Digital Citizen Academy, an organization addressing the issue of technology addiction and overuse. She’s also been a visiting scholar at the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime division, where she became intimately familiar with the dark recesses of the internet. Her books, “Unplug” and “Digital Distress,” explain the challenges of growing up in a digital world and offer practical advice for parents.

Last spring, former Texas Children’s Hospital surgeon and current whistleblower Dr. Eithan Haim exposed, in his words, that the hospital was lying to the public about the existence of their transgender program. Despite promises to cease such procedures, the hospital continued practicing transgender medicine on kids as young as 11.
Texas legislators responded to the information revealed by Haim with the bi-partisan Senate Bill 14, outlawing transgender medical interventions on minors statewide. This ignited controversy and drew the ire of activists and hospital officials opposing any restrictions on transgender medicine.
Eithan’s story took a legal turn as federal agents, presumably armed with internal server data, pursued him. He’s been threatened with prosecution from the federal government, and there is clearly a message being sent around those that seek to challenge the practice of transgender medicine and specifically in context of children.
In our sit down with Haim, accompanied by his attorney Marcella Burke, we discuss his views on the dangers of transgender medicine for children, why he’s committed to protecting them from life-altering procedures, and the in depth story of everything that he has experienced over the last year.

If the streaming charts are true, then there’s a good chance you’ve watched the collapse of America in Netflix’s new film Leave the World Behind. The film is many things, including pretty good, but most notably, it’s a conspiracy theory built on racial division, brought to you by former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama.
On one level, this is a classic disaster movie. There’re some great set pieces, it’s stylish and cinematic, and the whole thing feels pretty believable, but at another level, it’s a perfect manifestation of America’s cynical, elite nihilism. It’s an uncomfortable mix of warning and wish-fulfillment about national collapse that just happens to be executive produced by the Obamas.
It’s important for us as adults, and especially as parents, to confront this vision and understand where it goes deeply wrong so that we and our kids can escape its siren call to nihilism, disempowerment, and despair.

Kristi Kendall, an accomplished television producer and filmmaker, and Ben Klutsey, Director of the Program on Pluralism and Civil Exchange at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, joined the show to discuss their new documentary film, Undivide Us. The film brings together people from diverse backgrounds to discuss highly contentious topics like gun control, abortion, and immigration, and dives into the pressing concerns of America's current political culture, exploring the risks of national division and the specter of civil unrest.
Kristi and Ben stress the significance of local community engagement, advocating for a decentralized approach to defusing toxic polarization. They challenge media narratives that present black-and-white stereotypes as representing average Americans across the political spectrum and highlight the importance of nuance and perspective. Classical liberal values of mutual respect and curiosity can pave the way for a more united America if we take them seriously.

Osama Bin Laden’s letter to America goes viral on TikTok. Free speech loses even more friends. Harvard rallies around the race card.
We’ve watched a series of truly outrageous events unfold. All of them are deeply connected and a warning for the trajectory of our society. Too many of our kids have embraced the enemies of civilization, too many of our educational and cultural institutions are to blame, and at the heart of all of it is an assault on our nation’s founding principles: freedom of expression and equality under the law. These enlightenment values are being replaced by a resurgence of pre-industrial tribal barbarism masquerading as postmodern social justice.
As parents, we need to get engaged in this battle of ideas with our kids and help them navigate this crazy world so they don’t end up as useful idiots taking to the streets in defense of evil. We must accept our responsibility to help them understand right from wrong, and be a lighthouse they can turn to in dark times. They’re not going to find that light anywhere else.

Jaleel White, widely recognized for his iconic role as Steve Urkel in "Family Matters," has a career that spans far beyond this memorable character. Starting in the industry as a child actor, he featured in dozens of national commercials and various classic TV shows, including "Mr. Belvedere" and "The Jeffersons." Beyond the screen, Jaleel is deeply committed to his role as a single father. He embraces the challenges and rewards of parenting with a hands-on and thoughtful approach, focusing on being present and observant but knowing when not to intervene and let his daughter figure things out for herself.

Alan Graham has been on the frontlines tackling homelessness for 25 years. As the CEO and founder of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a social outreach ministry, Alan has been instrumental in developing innovative solutions, building genuine relationships with the homeless community, and providing sustainable, permanent support for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness.
Alan’s journey began in 1998 when he, along with four friends, started delivering meals to homeless men and women from the back of a green minivan. This initial effort has since expanded significantly, with 20 trucks operating in multiple cities and over 6 million meals served so far. In recent years, Alan has taken his ministry to the next level with the Community First Village in Austin, Texas. Rather than the traditional shelter model, this project is an enclave of tiny homes and RVs, designed to create a real community for its residents, or as Alan likes to say, his neighbors. Alan and his wife Tricia have since moved into the community themselves, alongside over 350 formerly homeless neighbors.
This interview contains adult themes and may not be suitable for younger listeners.

Our culture is suffering from a potentially fatal allergy. Identity politics has become a kind of autoimmune disease that threatens to kill the host. We've become hypersensitive to our superficial identities just as our kids have become hypersensitive to most of the components of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
We're going to need more than an emergency epipen if we want to stop this disease and get back on track to stability and health as a society. And no, we can't just “get along” in some utopian, post-identity abstract metaverse. Our challenge is much more complicated, and more human than that. If we don’t recognize and effectively treat what’s making us, and especially our kids, so dangerously hypersensitive about our own identities and downright allergic to every difference, our society might not recover from our next tribal anaphylactic shock.

The barbarians are at the gates, and we created them. The kids who’ve terrorized speakers on college campuses and HR departments in Fortune 100 companies. The kids who scream and cry and throw temper tantrums on TikTok over trivial encounters with ideas they dislike. The kids who believe speech is violence AND silence is violence. The kids who took to the streets and burned our cities after the death of one man, yet now come out in explicit support of the barbaric murder of more than 1400 innocent civilians in Israel.
Why call them “kids”? Because they are OUR kids. And it’s OUR fault.
We’ve coddled and encouraged a generation of barbarians through both intentional activism, confusion, and neglect. We’ve allowed our education institutions from K-through-PhD to be captured by the enemies of civilization itself and transformed into barbarian incubators. Our media and politics have not only cheered this on, but profiteered from it at every turn.
And now, they are the barbarians inside our gates. And if we don’t do something about this right now, they will tear civilization itself to the ground. As a father of a high school senior, our family is looking at all of this in shock and horror. The stakes for my son’s future are high. And the stakes for our civilization are even higher.

Greg Lukianoff, a First Amendment lawyer and President of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), dives headfirst into the pressing issues of free speech and the impact of cancel culture in academia. Lukianoff discusses the troubling trends at prestigious universities, where ideological bias butts up against claims of political neutrality, especially highlighted during recent intense protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict. He presents a compelling, data-backed narrative from his latest book, The Canceling of the American Mind, co-authored with Rikki Schlott, revealing how a culture of censorship is stifling discourse and academic freedom.
Lukianoff is also known for co-authoring The Coddling of the American Mind with Jonathan Haidt.

Liberal arts education once cultivated well-rounded, critically thinking individuals who would become our future innovators and leaders. However, in recent years, intellectual diversity, curiosity, and discourse have departed the halls of our most elite universities. Pano Kanelos, the founding president of UATX, believes that ideological capture and the overall homogenization of higher education are to blame.
UATX, the University of Austin, has emerged as a reason for hope amidst negative trends at mainstream universities. This radical new experiment in higher education is putting quintessential liberal values at the center of the conversation. A graduate of UATX won’t just be an adept thinker, but an engaged, innovative citizen.

Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, the iconic face of Houston’s Gallery Furniture, has crafted a business empire that’s as much about community as it is about comfy mattresses.
Mack recounted his journey into the furniture business, from first discovering his sense of motivation to persuading his future wife to move to Houston and risk it all on a furniture store. More recently, he’s made waves by placing staggering sports bets, including a record-breaking $75 million on the Houston Astros for the World Series. Calling on his time-tested, over-the-top marketing style, Mack turned a gamble into a win-win for both him and his customers to the tune of $76 million in sales.
Beyond business and bets, Mack opened up about his dedication to family and community. A staunch believer in the revitalizing and empowering essence of work, Mack is full of endearing stories and good old fashioned wisdom.

Jay Glazer has broken some of the biggest stories in NFL history, yet behind the scenes, he faces a different battle. In his book Unbreakable, Jay courageously shares his struggle against what he calls ‘the gray’. It's a raw and inspiring account of his life-long battle with anxiety and depression and his quest to help others struggling with the same issues.
No matter how hard it can be, it's crucial that we open up about our personal struggles with those who care about us. More often than not, those close to us will be grateful for our honesty and will be ready to offer a comforting presence. It's also essential to surround ourselves with a supportive team of individuals whose shoulders we can lean on in times of need. Together, we can create a network of strength and resilience.
Jay, alongside former NFL player and Special Forces veteran Nate Boyer, founded MVP - Merging Vets and Players - to take his mental health mission even further. MVP has created a unique network of support between veterans and retired professional athletes and is saving lives in the process. In our conversation, we delve into the depths of Jay's journey, uncovering the strength and resilience that lies within each of us.

Adam Curry first became a household name as an MTV VJ, but that was only the start of his nearly four-decade crusade to revolutionize media. Since childhood, he has been obsessed with using cutting-edge technology to improve the ways that humans communicate ideas, from building MTV’s first website to bringing Bitcoin micropayment to podcasting.
Adam’s career has always been about pushing boundaries, in more ways than one. He’s known for exploring some of the wildest conspiracy theories on his popular podcast “No Agenda,” but recently he’s been diving into a new theory - faith in God. Adam’s recent turn towards Christianity has brought a profound layer to his already rich tapestry of experiences. Join me as I unravel the fascinating intersections of media, innovation, and faith in my conversation with Adam Curry.

You probably recognize Craig Melvin as a seasoned journalist and the co-host of The Today Show on NBC, but what you might not know is that he had to navigate addiction and generational fatherlessness in his own family to get there.
Craig documents this tumultuous journey in his book Pops, including how he learned to become a better father himself in the process. Now he uses his TV platform to celebrate fatherhood with his Dads Got This! series. As parents we all want to be the best version of ourselves for our kids, regardless of our own family circumstances, and Craig Melvin has accomplished exactly that.

Life throws us curveballs from time to time. Sometimes we take a swing and hit it out of the park, but even a swing and a miss can teach us important, humbling lessons. Few know this better than former MLB pitcher Jake Arrieta.
Jake’s scouting sheet looks like a storybook career: Olympic medalist, Cy Young Award winner, National League All-Star. He even led the 2016 Chicago Cubs to their first World Series in 108 years. However, Jake’s success was not a guarantee. Behind those accolades lies a story of uncertainty and setbacks, and these forged his trademark mental toughness, combined with a work ethic he learned from his dad. As a father of two himself, Jake, alongside his wife, now focuses on instilling the values of family, fortitude, and overcoming failure in their kids. Not everyone can be an all-star pitcher, but anyone can strive to be an all-star parent!

Business is fundamentally about creating value by solving a problem. Anybody with a great idea, regardless of their circumstances, has the potential to turn that idea into success with hard work and determination. Unfortunately, our school system clearly hasn’t prepared our kids, or us, to manage our money.
Today’s guest, Daymond John, is best known as ‘The People’s Shark’ on ABC’s Shark Tank, but now he’s tackling financial education head-on with his children’s book, Little Daymond Learns to Earn, teaching kids the basics of money and starting their own businesses. He has a true passion for teaching kids about finance, entrepreneurship, and the value of hard work. Daymond is also the CEO and founder of FUBU, a $6 billion fashion brand he started with only $40 and a van.
This episode of Dad Saves America was produced with the support of the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation.

The United States of America is arguably the first nation in human history to be created consciously on the basis of Enlightenment ideals. Those ideals were captured with power and poetry in the Declaration of Independence and have animated millions of people to immigrate to this country seeking a better life. You’ll find no greater champions of American ideals than first generation immigrants.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of us. According to recent polling by the Wall Street Journal, patriotism has utterly collapsed as an important value for most Americans. Thomas Jefferson is often quoted as having said, “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” By that measure, we’re failing future generations.
Today’s guest, Gordon Wood, is one the world’s leading experts on America’s revolutionary history and currently a professor at Brown University. Throughout his storied career, Gordon has earned a Pulitzer Prize, a National Humanities Medal, and the Bancroft Prize. Gordon has authored, co-authored, and contributed to dozens of books on the American Revolution, including his award-winning titles The Creation of the American Republic and The Radicalism of the American Revolution.

Good companies recognize people with passion and support their growth. As you pursue your career, it’s important learn as much as you can from mentors who are invested in your success.
Today’s guest, Niels Schuurmans, is one of those great mentors. John met Niels over twenty years ago through a mentorship program at MTV. He later became John’s boss at both Nickelodeon and Spike TV, and during that time, Niels taught him the wisdom of humbly going back to the drawing board when a project isn’t going as planned.
Niels has taken a pretty unusual road to his success and there's lessons for everyone about how to explore your potential and find your way to a fulfilling career. He was part of the early team that built Nickelodeon, shaping millions of childhoods for decades. Niels is currently the Chief Marketing and Creative Officer at 101 Studios, the production company responsible for hit shows like Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, 1923, and many more.

His book, How the Force Can Fix the World, analyzes the virtues of Star Wars and explains how to apply these learnings to the modern world. Stephen has figured out how to use one of the most iconic and influential American stories as a common language to teach moral lessons to children.
We worked with Stephen to create a great viewing guide so that you and your young Padawan can put his work into practice while watching your favorite Star Wars scenes.

There are basically three ways to learn how to be a good person. We learn by doing and making mistakes, we learn by observing what other people do, and we learn from the stories in our culture. Popular stories play an outsized role in our understanding of virtue and morality, and few stories can match the awesome power of Star Wars.
Today’s guest, Stephen Kent, has figured out how to use one of the most iconic and influential American stories as a common language to teach moral lessons to children. In his book, How the Force Can Fix the World, Stephen takes a deep dive into the virtues of Star Wars, and how they can be an antidote to our modern problems. From the fearlessness of the Jedi, to the hope instilled by the Rebel Alliance, and the redemption sometimes found by the Sith, he lays out an epic set of virtues worth learning from a galaxy far, far away.
We worked with Stephen to create a great viewing guide so that you and your young Padawan can put his work into practice while watching your favorite Star Wars scenes.

The physical world isn’t as scary as we’re led to believe, but our kids have a whole new digital world to contend with. We are currently raising the first generations of “digital natives” - kids born into a world already connected by the internet. Keeping our kids mentally healthy in an increasingly digital world is a new and confusing frontier for parents.Today’s guest, Dr. Lisa Strohman, is a licensed psychologist and the founder of Digital Citizen Academy, an organization addressing the issue of technology addiction and overuse. She’s also been a visiting scholar at the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime division, where she became intimately familiar with the dark recesses of the internet. Her books, Unplug and Digital Distress, explain the challenges of growing up in a digital world and offer practical advice for parents.

Why are fathers and father-figures so important in film? What can we learn about ourselves as film-makers and film fans from the way we utilize the notion of father as a driving character within these stories we tell on the screen? How should we think about storytelling and what compels us to focus on our relationships with fathers to articulate complex human dynamics?
Oscar winning actor Troy Kotsur and director Emma Westenberg joined Dad Saves America host John Papola for a conversation about the portrayal of fatherhood in film at SXSW 2023. They explored what responsibility filmmakers have to challenge common stereotypes about dads throughout pop culture, the impact of their own dads on how they see the issue, and Emergent Order Foundation's upcoming short documentary about Troy's relationship with his dad.

What are you going to do with the rest of your life? That’s the big question we all face, especially after graduation. If you feel directionless, don’t worry. You're not alone.
Today's guest, Nate Boyer, didn't have a clear path after high school, dropped out of college, and spent a year swabbing the deck on a fishing boat. He became a Green Beret, a walk-on player for the University of Texas Longhorns, played for the Seattle Seahawks, and even directed, wrote, and starred in a feature film. Nate is living proof of how far a growth mindset will take you towards unleashing your full potential.
Now Nate dedicates much of his time and energy to his nonprofit called MVP, which connects combat veterans to former professional athletes to help each other transition back to civilian life after leaving their uniforms behind.

For years, we have had artificial intelligence in our homes and pockets through voice assistants like Siri and Alexa. However, everything is changing with the newest generation of technologies, led by OpenAI's ChatGPT.
The future of education, work, and human creativity has already been turned upside down, but recent advances in quantum computing may supercharge this transformation even further. These new systems can solve complex problems that today’s fastest supercomputers would take thousands of years to solve.
Today’s guest, Whurley, is at the forefront of this new era. He’s an Eisenhower Fellow, a serial entrepreneur, and the founder and CEO of Strangeworks, which seeks to make quantum computing and quantum AI accessible and useful to everyone. Whurley believes that in the near future, breakthroughs in quantum computing will unlock the astounding potential of artificial intelligence.

Troy Kotsur has some wisdom to share.
Much like his character in CODA, Kotsur is the proud father of a teenage daughter. As you’d expect from any dad, he may embarrass her from time to time, but in the end, his priority is to support his family and be the best father he can be.
At the 94th Academy Awards, Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in CODA, available on Apple TV+. He is first deaf man, and second deaf performer after Marlee Matlin, to win an Academy Award.
However, long before this historic accomplishment, Kotsur already had a successful career on stage, particularly in Deaf West Theatre productions. He also has appeared in movies and on TV, including joining George Lucas’ Star Wars universe as a Tusken Raider in Disney’s The Mandalorian, created by Jon Favreau and currently streaming on Disney+.
Kotsur visited Austin, Texas in June to collaborate with Dad Saves America on an upcoming documentary about his story, with a focus on the impact of dads on the flourishing of their children. Kotsur’s visit culminated in a live event at Texas School for the Deaf, during which he taught an acting workshop for students and, later in the evening, gave a speech that drew a packed audience.

There’s a mental health crisis among boys and men. The warning signs of depression and other mental health issues in males, particularly teenage boys, are not widely known, and so they often go overlooked. The first step towards reversing this concerning trend is learning to recognize when young men are suffering.
Dr. Warren Farrell has spent half a century researching and writing about the biggest issues facing boys and men. His most recent book, “The Boy Crisis”, provides an eye opining glimpse into the reasons behind the ‘purpose void’ afflicting many of today’s young men, its detrimental affect on their mental health, and how active and involved moms and dads can restore a sense of purpose.
Dr. Farrell is a political scientist and activist who started his career as a board member for the National Organization for Women, and is the only man to have served three terms in that position. His expertise on the challenges facing both sexes provides valuable solutions for parents to help us heal our kids and our nation.

Her path from at-risk student to education policy wonk is full of wisdom for parents. After all, we want our kids to succeed regardless of their circumstances, and Denisha has done exactly that.
Denisha founded an organization to tackle our dysfunctional education system head on. It’s called Black Minds Matter and it’s a non-profit dedicated to promoting access to high-quality school options for black students. She’s also a Senior Fellow at the American Federation for Children, and previously served as School Choice and Youth Liaison at the U.S. Department of Education. She is a powerful voice for change because she knows the failures of our education system firsthand.

Quality education can be a great equalizer and a platform for success in life, but our current public school system may be the most regressive and unequal institution in our society.

Jeff Sandefer has some wisdom to share.
After striking it big in the oil industry before the age of 30, Jeff set off on a path of discovering where true meaning and purpose can be found how individuals can maximize their impact on the world. He’s applied the purposeful risk-taking of entrepreneurship to raising his own kids, going as far as to let his son start paragliding at age three!
Jeff is a successful entrepreneur-turned-business school professor who was considered to be one the best business professors in the country during his time at UT’s McComb School of Business. Later, he went on to found Acton MBA, a tough-as-nails business school that rivaled Harvard and was attended by the likes of Navy Seals and Olympic athletes. He also co-founded Acton Academy, a global network of innovative K-12 schools, alongside his wife Laura Sandefer.
Jeff’s latest project is called “Next Great Adventure,” which is a program to help people of all ages find their calling and live a life of meaning, without bankrupting students in the process.

Adam Carolla has some wisdom to share.
On the last episode of Pop Wisdom, I spoke with Dr. Drew, a father of triplets. In keeping with the theme, this week’s guest is a father of twins - and also was Dr. Drew’s co-host for ten years on KROQ’s long-running radio show Loveline. Despite their friendship, these two dads have very different perspectives on parenthood.
Adam is a comedian, podcast host, author of six books and star of the recent documentary No Safe Spaces. In his latest book, Everything Reminds Me of Something, he answers real questions from his fans and famous friends with an unapologetic sense of humor.
Adam bootstrapped his way to success, from construction work to coaching boxers, before breaking into the entertainment industry and setting the world record for most downloaded podcast. Adam didn’t take no for an answer, and certainly didn’t let fear stop him from achieving his goals.

The current culture of fear has made our kids nervous wrecks and has wreaked havoc on comedy in the process. Not taking yourself or your fears too seriously is one of the best ways to over come them, so we sure aren’t setting up kids for success.

This father of triplets may be a well-known media personality, but he knows that in the end, fatherhood isn’t about being the cool dad or the best dad, and certainly isn’t about being a famous dad. It’s about being present and engaged so that your kids can reach their own potential, whatever that may be.
Dr. Drew is a practicing doctor of internal medicine as well as an addiction specialist and has become known for hosting KROQ’s Loveline for over 30 years, starring in VH1’s Celebrity Rehab, and hosting a number of daytime shows. Dr. Drew recently wrote a teen guide on consent that deals with identity and relationships that he co-authored with his daughter Paulina Pinsky called It Doesn’t Have To Be Awkward.

What does the rise of “quiet quitting” say about the future careers of the youngest generation? Is it based on legitimate frustrations with the current career landscape or is it the result of a cultural devaluation of self-reliance and work ethic? Either way, how do we inspire our kids not to fall into this cycle of passivity?
Today’s guest, Ben Askren, is anything but passive and certainly isn’t a quitter. He’s a former wrestler and mixed martial artist with numerous championships under his belt. His new autobiography, Funky, chronicles his love affair with wrestling, and how he went undefeated for over a decade in MMA.
Throughout his time as an amateur and professional fighter, Ben knew the secret to his success would be to master the art of outworking everyone and he did just that. He now runs and coaches at five wrestling academies, inspiring his students to have the same grit and determination that led to his success. Ben’s perseverance to achieve his goals, and to teach others to do the same, serves as an inspiration to anyone, whether the goal is winning Olympic gold, or being a great dad.

Russ Roberts has some wisdom to share.
This father of four has spent a long time thinking about why having kids is so special. Russ may be an economist and a college president, but his stories about his grandfather, his dad, and his kids leave no doubt that his first priority is family.
His latest book, Wild Problems: A Guide to the Decisions That Define Us, takes the analytical approach of economics and explores how it can be adapted for questions that don’t have measurable data and can’t be answered with calculations. Russ believes that economics is really about figuring out how to lead a good life, and that includes financial questions alongside major life decisions.
Russ is currently the president of Shalem College in Jerusalem. He hosts the popular EconTalk podcast and he, along with host John Papola, co-created the viral "Keynes vs. Hayek" rap videos.

What do hip hop and economics have in common? Well, until host John Papola and Russ Roberts met following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, there was very little overlap between those two topics.
John learned of Russ after listening to his popular podcast, EconTalk, which sent John down the economics rabbit-hole. This led to an unlikely collaboration between John, a filmmaker, and Russ, economist. In 2010, “Fear the Boom and Bust: Keynes vs. Hayek” debuted on YouTube and became an internet sensation, practically overnight. It was the first viral rap battle of its kind, predating the popular “Epic Rap Battles Of History” by over 8 months. This project ended up changing the course of John’s career, eventually leading to Dad Saves America.
In this episode of Dad Saves America, these two friends discuss their shared passions of economics, storytelling, Adam Smith, and emergent order. Russ recently published a book about thinking through the big questions in life called Wild Problems: A Guide to the Decisions That Define Us.

We’ve had many experts in the studio, including Jonathan Haidt, Mike Yates, Lenore Skenazy, Warren Farrell, Matt Ridley, Martin Gurri, and Michael Strong.
Is the point of a successful career to gather as much money as possible so that you can later start “doing good,” or should increasing your net worth and improving human welfare go hand-in-hand?
Evan Baehr would argue that the best kind of entrepreneurs take the latter approach. The first step to being an effective entrepreneur is finding a problem that you’re passionate about solving. The bigger the problem is that you try to tackle, the more good you can do along the way.
Baehr is managing partner of Learn Capital, a venture capital fund that backs and builds companies that drive human flourishing. He’s also the founder of Teneo, an organization committed to cultivating the next generation of American leaders, and author of the best selling book Get Backed.

Dr. Carlos Carvalho has some wisdom to share.
Growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Carvalho learned what real danger is. That upbringing, combined with his career as a statistician, has resulted in a unique perspective on age-appropriate risk-taking for his own kids, especially compared to the typical American parent of his generation.
Dr. Carvalho is a professor of statistics and the Executive Director of the Salem Center for Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s an expert in analyzing data and weighing the tradeoffs of competing economic policies, parenting approaches, or any other decision-making process.

Should we “trust the science”? What does that even mean?
Dr. Carlos Carvalho is a professor of statistics and the Executive Director of the Salem Center for Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s an expert in analyzing data and understanding the tradeoffs of competing policies.
Dr. Carvalho doesn’t believe we should “trust the science” because science is not capable of leading people. The scientific method is a process of gathering information about the world, but in the end, decision making lies with each of us, according to our values.
That said, Dr. Carvalho knows how important data is to the decision making process. In fact, one of the biggest problems today is that, whether the issue is poverty, climate change, or infectious disease, most people don’t have an accurate dataset on which to base their decisions. In his classes, he teaches the current generation of college students how to avoid these pitfalls and develop reliable critical thinking skills to carry with them into their lives after college.

Brian Gitt has some wisdom to share.
The example his dad set helped Gitt develop the entrepreneurial and adventurous spirit he has today, and a few experiments with fireworks taught him a lesson or two about risk-taking along the way. A little mischief can be good for kids, but Gitt recalls how he and his friends “could’ve burned down the whole neighborhood” on a few occasions.
Gitt has spent his whole career as an entrepreneur in the energy sector and cares deeply about protecting the environment. He also believes that our energy production has to serve the needs of people, not ideologies, and so he rejects the quasi-religious notion that fossil fuels can simply be replaced with solar, wind, or any other of the highly inefficient forms of renewable energy currently on the table.

Dr. Drew Pinsky’s 2008 book, The Mirror Effect, was an insightful analysis of celebrity culture when originally published. Looking back, it’s also turned out to be a prescient guide to the social media landscape that’s emerged over the past decade. In this episode of Dad Saves America, we discuss social media, narcissism, substance abuse, therapy, and Dr. Drew’s wide-reaching career.

Brian Gitt’s conversion from mainstream environmentalism was an accident.
For decades, he believed that solar and wind power were the future, and that it was only a matter of time before fossil fuels were a thing of the past. However, after creating a startup that helped homeowners compare utility costs, he realized that the numbers just didn’t add up for the environmentalists’ favorite kinds of energy.

Growing up in Communist Czechoslovakia, Tupy learned to appreciate and strive for liberty from a young age. He cherished any connection with the culture and freedoms of the West and sought out opportunities for adventure, sometimes taking on serious risks in the process. More than anything, his parents taught him through their actions how to be true to himself, even in the face of oppression.

If our population keeps growing, won’t we eventually run out of resources?
According to Marian Tupy, the answer is no. Tupy is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute who recently co-authored Superabundance, a book exploring this very question. More people means more mouths to feed, but it also means more minds working together to develop the technology of the future. As long as individuals are free to explore and innovate, we can continue to increase the efficiency with which we use natural resources. Tupy believes that population growth and freedom are the secret ingredients for a superabundant future.

How quickly can a gang leader turn his life around? For Antong Lucky, it began the moment he was sent to prison.
Lucky grew up in East Dallas and from a young age, he was exposed to gang culture and drug dealing. When he was sentenced to seven years in prison at age 21, he knew that something had to change in his life. Upon his release, he began working with Bishop Omar Jahwar, founder of Urban Specialists. On this path of redemption, Lucky worked to break the school-to-prison pipeline and bring peace to his neighborhood, and eventually to communities across the country.
Lucky recently published his memoir, A Redemptive Path Forward, and is now the president of Urban Specialists.

How do we remove the barriers of 20th century institutions so that we can unleash 21st century innovation?
Mike Gibson is a venture capitalist who’s at war with the “Paper Belt.” That’s what he calls the stretch of the east coast home to federal politics in Washington D.C., mass media in NYC, and elite degrees in Boston. As the 21st century has progressed, the 20th century design of the Paper Belt has begun to show just how outdated it is, and Mike sees an opportunity to build something better. That's why he wrote his soon-to-be released book, "Paper Belt on Fire.”

Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. We believe strong children come from a strong family. We’ve had many experts in the studio, including Jonathan Haidt, Mike Yates, Lenore Skenazy, Warren Farrell, Matt Ridley, Martin Gurri, and Michael Strong.
Laura Sandefer has some wisdom to share.
As the co-founder of the Acton Academy school network, Sandefer believes that children need to be empowered to make mistakes, fail, grow, and improve on their own. The catalyst for the radical model of education now practiced at Acton came from concerns about her own children’s education. What started as an educational experiment for her family has grown into a network of schools across the globe. Along this journey, she’s picked up plenty of valuable parenting insights.

What happens when you take a school and remove all but three adults? You get Acton Academy.
Laura Sandefer, co-founder of the Acton Academy school network and author of Courage to Grow, is an academic entrepreneur who believes that children need to be empowered to make mistakes, fail, grow, and improve on their own.
Sandefer works to enable other parents to establish new Acton Academies to serve the educational needs of their families and local communities. Acton Academy is a radical model of schooling that puts as much power as possible directly into the hands of students, giving them the opportunity to take ownership of their choices and capabilities from an early age.

What’s going on with American boys these days? Why are they falling behind girls in education, health, and career prospects?
To help answer these questions, John sat down with Dr. Warren Farrell, who’s been studying the issue for decades.
Dr. Farrell is a political scientist and activist who wrote The Boy Crisis, a book arguing for the importance of strong father figures in a contemporary culture that often ignores them. He started his career as a board member for the National Organization for Women, and is the only man to have served three terms in that position.

What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur and what is the future of capitalism? In fact, what even is capitalism?
In this full episode of Dad Saves America, John sits down with his friend John Mackey (who also happens to be the CEO and co-founder of Whole Foods Market) to talk about entrepreneurship, dealing with bullies, and finding purpose in your career. Mackey is a passionate proponent of “conscious capitalism,” a term he coined in reference to his unique approach to business that guides decision-making at Whole Foods.
Throughout this interview, John and John break down misconceptions about capitalism and Mackey reflects on his 41-year journey with Whole Foods.

What if everything you’ve been taught about education is wrong? Could your best bet be pulling your kids out of their current schools as quickly as possible?
Michael Strong, founder of The Socratic Experience (https://socraticexperience.com), has dedicated his life’s work to figuring that out. As an educational entrepreneur, he’s created high-performance private and charter schools across the country. In these schools, Michael has put into action his Socratic Practice, an innovative adaptation of the age-old Socratic method, which he outlines in his book, The Habit of Thought.
We sat down with Michael to figure out what’s missing from the conventional American school system and which solutions he’s found to be successful.

Martin is a self-proclaimed “geyser of unfounded opinions” and learned early on from his own pop’s wisdom how to control that impulse. That combination of instinct and self-discipline molded him into a keen analyst with a surprising array of passions and pastimes. He may even be his generation’s most knowledgable fan of anime.

Why does the country seem to erupt into new mass protests every few months? Is it all connected or just a coincidence?
In this episode, John sits down with fellow dad and author Martin Gurri, who sees the profile of the typical protestor as the common thread. Disenchanted and well-educated young people have been overwhelmed by the information tsunami of the digital age. Even though they may disagree on the details, most share a distrust of traditional institutions and media outlets.
Martin spent three decades as a CIA media analyst. His years of experience culminated with his 2014 book, The Revolt of the Public, which explores this topic in depth.
