The Med Control Monthly Podcast is brought to you by the Oakland County Medical Control Authority in Oakland County, MI. The mission of Med Control Monthly is to provide the latest updates, information, and trends to and on behalf of Oakland County MCAs’ EMS agencies and hospitals. The Oakland County EMS system is made up of 49 EMS agencies and 15 hospitals that serve about 1.3 million residents with approximately 250,000 calls for service each year. It requires a constant stream of high-quality information to support such a robust and busy system. We hope that this podcast series provides you with a better understanding of what your medical control authority is, what it does, and how it works to assure the highest level of patient care and system-wide support. In this episode, we re-introduce you to a small group of dedicated individuals who have volunteered countless hours over the past eight-months towards the development of a two-day training event designed to prepare first responders to save lives at future mass casualty incidents (MCI). During this episode, our guests help the audience appreciate the current magnitude of MCIs in the United States and the impact on our communities and citizens. Then, we will cover the outcome of the full-scale MCI drill that took place on day 2, by discussing key outcomes of the after-action review (AAR). The goal of this episode is to share the experiences and lessons learned to inspire more first responder agencies to plan and execute training in preparation of future MCIs. Then, they help us appreciate the value of preparing for MCIs. Finally, our guests list and describe recommendations for first responder agencies regarding preparing for MCIs.

Dr. McGraw is here to address the most recent decision to remove ketamine from ALL OCMCA EMS protocols. In case you haven’t heard, the use of ketamine by Oakland County EMS providers is on pause until further notice. Dr. McGraw will walk us through the reasons ketamine was introduced to our system in the first place, as well as the process and reasoning that led to the current decision to remove it from our treatment protocols for the time being.

In this very first episode of Med Control Monthly, we’ll introduce you to a few key staff members of the Oakland County Medical Control Authority. Geoff Lassers is the host of Med Control Monthly, as well as the EMS System Manager of the OCMCA and a firefighter/paramedic with the West Bloomfield Fire Department. Geoff is accompanied with
the OCMCA Executive Director, Bonnie Kincaid, as well as John Theut, who is currently the med control Quality Improvement Coordinator, and recently retired as a Captain and Paramedic from the Ferndale Fire Department after 25-years of service.
In this episode, Bonnie, John, and Geoff introduce the Med Control Monthly Podcast to our system of EMS agencies and hospitals and discuss three primary responsibilities of the OCMCA.
