Interviews, information and entertainment with a focus on the RG10 area of Berkshire. Listen in as we catch up with interesting people connected with our local communities.
Before it became the peaceful nature reserve we know today, the former clay pit at Knowl Hill was transformed into a prehistoric landscape for the 1974 cult film, The Land That Time Forgot.
In this episode of The RG10 Podcast, actor Bobby Parr, who played the caveman character Ahm, shares his memories of filming in the heart of the RG10 area.
Bobby recalls the incredible sets, the giant pterodactyl suspended from a crane, working alongside star Doug McClure, and performing one of the film's most memorable scenes himself.
Directed by Kevin Connor, the film was the first adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel about the crew of a German U-boat and its British prisoners stumbling upon a hidden land of primitive humans and dinosaurs. It predated Jurassic Park by nearly two decades!
Bobby Parr also reflects on returning to Knowl Hill to visit the location more than 50 years later, and why the film continues to capture the imagination of audiences around the world.
There's an opportunity for fans to meet and chat with Bobby Parr when he visits Knowl Hill on Sunday 9 August 2026.

What if winning a cash prize wasn’t down to luck—but your own skill, strategy, and problem-solving ability?
In this episode, Ben speaks with Quest Comps founders Paul Williams and Jaime Cox about their new competition concept that combines adventure, puzzles, public transport, and real cash prizes. Inspired by shows like Race Around the World and traditional competition sites, Quest Comps is creating challenges where contestants race to solve clues and reach the finish line first.
The conversation explores their first event, Race to London, where participants travel from Berkshire to Central London using only public transport, uncovering clues along the way. Paul explains the vision behind the business, why he wanted to move beyond luck-based competitions, and how future quests could expand across the UK—and even around the world.
Jaime shares his thoughts on marketing the concept, the growing demand for real-world experiences away from screens, and how Quest Comps hopes to support charitable fundraising through future events.
In this episode:
The story behind Quest Comps
How Race to London works
Why skill-based competitions are different from raffles
Future plans, including Land’s End to John O’Groats and global challenges
The role of public transport, clues, and strategy

The Thames is more than just a river. It’s regattas in Henley, walks along the towpath, boating through the locks, wildlife at sunrise, and communities built around the water.
In this episode of The RG10 Podcast, we speak with Greg Wilkinson, Chairman of the Middle Thames branch of the River Thames Society, about why this part of the river matters so much and the work being done to protect it.
We also address the challenges. Flooding, sewage discharge, ageing infrastructure and concerns about river health are very real issues. But alongside those pressures, there’s energy, commitment and a growing community determined to safeguard the Thames for future generations.
This is a conversation about pride, responsibility and optimism — and about making sure the river remains at least as good for those who come after us as it is today.

This week on the RG10 Podcast we hear from Tony Lyons - working musician, teacher, and familiar face on the Twyford music scene.
Tony talks about a life spent playing music for a living: from seeing Queen at Wembley in 1986 and assuming all gigs would be like that, to first shows that went wrong before the second beat, freezing European tours in leaky vans, and eventually playing Wembley Stadium himself.
We chat about teaching music locally, juggling gigs and family life, terrible band names, and the huge sound of Boxset UK - the two-man band combining accordion, guitar, bass drum and harmony vocals filling festival stages across the UK, Europe and the US.
Tony also discusses Boxset UK’s latest project: setting the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson to music. They have a special EP launch and live performance at Twyford Library on 30 January at 8pm, in partnership with local literacy charity ABC to Read.
Enjoy a conversation rooted in RG10, full of stories, laughs, and a genuine love for live music.

In this episode as we dive into the fascinating history and contemporary duties of the High Sheriff of Berkshire. Our guest, Alexander Barfield, is the 809th person to fill the post and he shares the rich history of the role, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, and its evolution from a powerful position involved in tax collection and law enforcement to its current, largely ceremonial nature.
Alexander discusses his responsibilities, which include working with the judiciary, prisons, probation services, the voluntary sector, and emergency services. He details the various ceremonial duties such as police awards, fire service graduations, charity visits, and citizenship ceremonies. As a non-political and voluntary role, the High Sheriff covers all expenses, from the uniform to event costs.
We explore the unique appointment process, involving selection by a panel, approval by the Privy Council, and a formal ceremony with the King. Alexander also shares his personal journey, from his voluntary work that led to his selection, to his focus during his tenure on supporting children in the care system and those leaving it.

This episode of The RG10 podcast is about a new charity run by bereaved parents for bereaved parents. It's called Footprint Baby Loss and it provides support for families who've lost one or more of their twins and triplets before, during or after birth.
The charity has been co-founded by Suzie Scofield from Wargrave and Sharon Darke from Banbury. They met 11 years ago after Suzie lost her twins, Rory and Daniel. Sharon herself had lost twin boys - Charlie and Joshua - and she gave Suzie vital peer support.
The discussion delves into the unique support provided by Footprints Baby Loss, the positive reactions from those who have sought help, and the various ways the charity offers help including online groups and one-on-one conversations.
Suzie and Sharon discuss coping mechanisms for handling the
emotional toll of hearing grief stories and express their hopes for the
charity's future, focusing on sustaining support, expanding outreach, and
improving bereavement care nationwide.

The Sue Ryder charity is dedicated to the relief of suffering. Most people know that they ensure anyone approaching the end of their life can access the palliative care and other support they need. The charity is also there for people living with grief so that they don't feel alone, and to help their loved ones to know how to be 'Grief Kind'.
Their latest initiative is to open Sue Ryder Grief Kind Spaces around the country. These are weekly drop-in sessions run by trained volunteers providing a safe, informal and supportive place in the local community to enable people to come together and share their experiences of grief to feel heard and less alone.
A Grief Kind Space now runs on Wednesday mornings at Hare Hatch Sheeplands, between Twyford and Wargrave. It is held from 10am to 12 noon in the café in the garden centre and anyone aged 18 and above is welcome to attend.
In this episode of The RG10 Podcast we hear more about the Grief Kind Space and how it works from Amanda Deane of the Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice.

A couple of weeks ago, Ellie Barnes (the name behind the company that helps organise the Twyford Fun Run and other events) completed the Ironman Portugal triathlon. That's 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, then a FULL marathon.
Not only that, she managed to qualify for the Ironman World Championships 2024.
She is also a mum of three holding down a full time job.
All of this just weeks after collapsing at another event and being taken off in an ambulance with heat exhaustion.

“I've been to places where they've got absolutely nothing in their house or their flat. No carpets on the floor, no curtains on the window, no furniture. I went to one place and the little boy all he had was a cardboard box to play with. The kids don't have any other clothes other than what they go to school in, they just sleep in those. It’s happening here in Reading today and it's very scary.”
Ruth Perkins is fundraising manager for Reading Family Aid. Every year the organisation has an annual toy appeal asking people in the town and surrounding area to donate toys. These are given to children who would otherwise not have a gift on Christmas Day. Ruth has been part of the organisation for the last 20 years:
“The number of children that we donate to has gone up astronomically. We used to deal with toys for about 500 or 600 children and last year we did 3001 children. Reading on the face of it seems quite an affluent town but there are areas of real deprivation. The difference between those that have and those that have not is growing bigger and it's hard to believe. You just can't imagine the kinds of lives that some of these people are living."
To make a donation please check out the Toy Donations page for details.
With the cost-of-living crisis hitting families hard in so many ways, this support makes a real difference to every family. Here’s just one of the many ‘thank you’ messages Reading Family Aid received last year,:
"Hi, thank you so much for the fantastic toys we received. This was the first time we had received toys from you. Our families were so grateful. Everything was brilliant. We are so grateful to you for what you do. You made many children very happy, especially this year when things are very tough for so many. A massive thank you."
There are two ways you can help.
For details of how to donate toys, please visit: www.readingfamilyaid.org/donate-toys.html

In the early 1840s, a Belgian called Adolphe Sax invented a new musical instrument and decided to name it after himself. Ignoring the opportunity to go with the ‘Adolphophone’ our hero decided he would use his surname instead and thus the saxophone was born. By the way, this was not the only example of Adolphe’s self-reverential instrument naming. He also invented the saxotromba, saxhorn and saxtuba.
Nearly 200 years later, Adolphe’s work lives on in our area. The Sax Bandits are an all-saxophone band for all ages and abilities – even beginners – with sessions in Charvil Village Hall and a choice of other locations in surrounding areas. They meet once a month, playing arrangements of rock and pop songs; from Madness to George Ezra to Earth Wind & Fire. As their website saxbandits.co.uk says “Learn to play songs together in a relaxed and supportive environment. You can expect to see an assorted collection of saxophones, people, biscuits, and wrong notes!”
The Sax Bandits also perform a few gigs each year, usually a summer festival and a Christmas event. For example, On Monday 18th December they will be playing Henley Market Square as part of the Henley Living Advent Calendar.
In this episode of the RG10 Podcast you will hear from Sax Bandits founder Rob Digweed, AKA ‘The Sorcerer of Sax’.

From the 5th to the 7th of October, Twyford Drama are putting on a pair of one act plays that could not be more different.
'The Monkey's Paw' is a supernatural tale, with the perils of ambition at its heart. In this chiller, a family is granted three wishes, all of which come true but in a macabre and unexpected way.
Then there is 'Little Grimley Presents... Strictly Sex Factor On Ice.' It's a comedy all about getting bums back on seats for a local am dram theatre company where their numbers have dwindled. With some twists, turns, glamour, glitter ball, and relying on the fact that sex sells tickets, they embark on bringing a brand new show to life... while on roller skates!
In this episode we hear from the directors of the two plays. They reveal all about the joys - and sometimes the tribulations - of local amateur dramatics.

Mystery surrounds the origins of Springfield Table Tennis Club, Twyford’s number 1 ping pong establishment.
Firstly, how did the club get its name?
Secondly, beyond being formed in the 1960s, what is known of the club’s history?
Have the secrets been lost in time?
The RG10 Podcast headed down to the club’s championships finals night to find out more, and also get word from Jason King, chairman and secretary:
“All ages can play [table tennis]. You can literally be playing it from a very young age all the way up to retirement age, and even beyond that as well. It is a very diverse sport and obviously we like to think we're very inclusive as well.”
“It's a really good way to get active, especially in the winter months when it's cold and dark and there's not too many alternatives. It's a really good accessible sport and a cheap sport to get involved in."

If you went you may still be recovering from it, if you didn't go you probably heard it anyway. The Twyford Beer Festival, surely RG10's biggest annual event, was held over the weekend.
As per usual, there were dozens of local brews and drinks to quench the thirst during 3 days of amazing weather. All that plus a host of supremely gifted musicians such as local band Big Audio Twynamite and the music of Pink Floyd performed by Crazy Diamond.
The event raises thousands of pounds for Orchid, the UK’s leading charity for those affected by male cancer.
In this episode of the podcast you will hear from Ian Wisdom, the festival organiser. and Jason Holmes, stage manager and band booker.

109 years ago this week there was a huge fire at St Mary's Church in Wargrave. Here’s an excerpt from the Wokingham Fire Brigade Diaries from June the 1st, 1914:
"Called at 3.40am to a fire at Wargrave Church, some 2 hours after the fire was started. The Henley & Wargrave Brigades were in attendance. Roof and belfry destroyed. Also bells, clock & all interior masonry, timber fittings & windows – quite gutted"
In this episode of the RG10 Podcast we delve into the life of the person who many believe was responsible for the blaze.
She was a militant suffragette called Lillian Lenton, who also attacked the tea pavilion at Kew Gardens, was jailed, became seriously ill after going on hunger strike, and then escaped. This led to her becoming known to the police as a 'tiny, wily elusive pimpernel' due to her skill at evading capture.
So did she visit Wargrave whilst on the run?
Find out in this week's episode.

The RG10 magazine has published its 100th edition!
In this episode we hear from magazine founder, editor and publisher Nikki Ochtman as she reflects on a journey that started in 2009.
Nikki shares some of the initial aims she had for the magazine: “I've always been keen on supporting small local businesses and promoting themes such as shop local, protecting the vulnerable in society and doing our bit to minimise our impact on the environment. All of these themes I think are quite consistent in the magazine, but I really just wanted to provide a vehicle for local clubs and societies to share their community news more widely across the villages and give businesses an affordable and effective way of showcasing what they do and reaching their target audience in a way that had been limited to them before.”
And her hopes for the future: "It would be nice to think it would still be around in another ten years but who knows! I'll have to get better at delegating and start focusing on the actual business and make it a proper living as opposed to a passion hobby!"

In the days leading up to the coronation of King Charles III, The RG10 Podcast caught up with a couple of local initiatives that have been catching the imagination of residents.
First up, Ben speaks to Heather Howarth of the Hurst Hookers, the knitting and crochet group that has created a charming display around Hurst village pond over the past couple of weeks. The wooden posts have been converted into Grenadier Guards standing to attention around the King and Queen Consort and the Archbishop of Canterbury. There's even a Paddington Bear!
The work has been much admired by residents and visitors alike, and there has been a great response to images shared on social media. Hurst Hookers are using the display to raise money for The Cowshed, a Berkshire charity providing clothing and other items to people facing hardship - see donation link below.
We also hear from Martin Alder, Vice-Chairman of Twyford Parish Council, about the Coronation Picnic in the Park. Everyone is invited to come together at Stanlake Meadow in Twyford from 10am on Saturday 6 May for the live screening of the coronation, followed around 2pm by the children's film Encanto, then live music from the band BoxSet from 4pm to 6pm.
In terms of refreshments there will be a bar run by the organisers of Twyford Beer Festival, food from the Rural Pie Co. to supplement your picnic, and treat yourself to something sweet from Maurices Ice Cream.

Did you know that Twyford is twinned with the small town of Cuincy in northern France?
The twinning only dates back to 2018, but strong connections have already been formed between the two locations.
To mark the 5th anniversary in March, the Twyford Twinning Association held a 'soirée' at Loddon Hall. The RG10 Podcast went along to learn more.
We catch up with the association's chairman, Hazel Evans, who talks about the impact of the pandemic and describes past events and plans for the future. The association is keen to raise awareness of the opportunities that exist for more clubs, societies and individuals to get involved and build relationships with their counterparts across the Channel.

How much do you know about the history, architecture and culture of Reading?
The RG10 Podcast talked to local legend Terry Dixon, a Reading native who has so far spent six years of his retirement running themed walking tours of his home town. Even those familiar with the county town of Berkshire are sure to discover something new on one of Terry's Reading Walkabouts.
Terry has devised 16 different routes, with two more due to be added this spring. Subjects include Edible Reading, Reading Architecture, Women of Reading, Crime and Punishment, Ghosts of Hallowe'en and Huntley & Palmer's 200th anniversary. New themed walks are added every year by popular demand.
We learn about the sources of Terry's inspiration, the enjoyment he finds in connecting with people from near and far, and the pride he takes in having so far raised over £12,000 for around 15 mainly local charities.
Listen to discover the truth about the Forbury Lion and its sculptor, and just as importantly, which Huntley & Palmer's biscuit has earned its place as Terry's favourite ...

From noon on Friday 27 January, a group of cycling enthusiasts led by Jenni Green, the founder of the Bia cycling brand, set out to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats within 24 hours.
The RG10 Podcast went along to the Bia Hub in Twyford to witness some of the high spirits, hard work and collective effort put into the charity event. Ben spoke to several participants, including Jenni herself and also Lee Goodwin, the owner of Velo Life, which has recently joined up with the Bia brand and has two further cycle workshop/cafes in Warren Row and Wargrave.
In the end 24 people took turns cycling for an hour at a time on several indoor KICKR bikes across 'real' National Cycle Network routes via the virtual cycling platform Wahoo RGT. There was plenty of support from friends and family, uplifting music and games - plus a further 126 cyclists taking part online around the world.
Together, the Kilometre Collective smashed the Land's End to John O'Groats target of 1916 km almost threefold, covering a total of 5210 km.
The event raised more than £2000 for three charities: Women in Sport, Mind and Qhubeka. To learn more about The Kilometre Collective or donate to their fundraising effort, visit https://biacycling.com/the-kilometre-collective.

Winter 2022-23: more people than ever are finding themselves struggling to make ends meet in the current cost of living crisis.
Organisations such as parish and borough councils and charities including Citizens Advice are working hard to signpost individuals and families to the support available, from financial grants to food banks and the provision of clothing and other essentials. There is also a network of 'warm spaces' running open sessions to enable people to access support and get warm if they are minimising the use of their heating at home due to energy costs.
The RG10 Podcast caught up with Citizens Advice Wokingham during one of their Mobile Advice Unit visits to Twyford. This one at Waitrose on 14 January was a joint event with Twyford Parish Council focusing on cost of living support. Councillors were also available to chat to local residents and raise awareness of local initiatives such as the Warm Spaces available at the library and the youth centre.
In this episode, we hear from David Warby, the Mobile Advice Unit lead for Citizens Advice Wokingham, and also the Chief Executive, Jake Morrison, about the type of support available and the sharp rise in enquiries being experienced.
Citizens Advice Wokingham offer a One Front Door service which aims to remove the need for residents to have to figure out what support they may be eligible for and make multiple applications to different entities. Anyone can get in touch: advisers listen to their concerns and then decide which initiatives match their needs and who pays for what. In this way, support is drawn from different entities including the government's Household Support Fund, members of Wokingham United Charities or The Polehampton Charity in Twyford, Ruscombe and Charvil.

It's the most wonderful time of the year.
A time for tradition.
A time for family.
A time for the Twyford and District Round Table to head to their lock up and retrieve Santa, his sleigh and all the reindeer.
Anyone who has spent December in RG10 will probably be aware of the Round Table's annual Santa sleigh run, where the man with all the presents trundles up various roads in Twyford, Hurst, Charvil and Wargrave delivering copious amounts of cheer (and sweets).
In what is probably a world first, the RG10 podcast team have managed to go behind the scenes of this magnificent festive tour. You can hear from happy kids, indecently excited adults, and - most importantly - someone with top level access to Father Christmas.

As the weather turns colder and we approach the festive season, the number of people finding themselves in financial difficulties is growing due to soaring energy bills and the rising cost of living.
Despite Wokingham being one of the most prosperous boroughs in the UK, it now has over 5,000 children living under the poverty line. This figure was unimaginable to our podcast guest, Emma Cantrell, when she founded First Days Children's Charity ten years ago. She wanted to help the then relatively small number of local families struggling financially by providing items that were essential but beyond their means, such as beds, school uniforms, baby equipment and toiletries.
Nowadays the charity supports thousands of children living in households with financial difficulties across Bracknell, Reading and Wokingham. As well as providing essential equipment, they have a community outreach service to find those that are reluctant to come forward and seek help for the first time. The needs-led support includes one-to-one coaching to help restore confidence, signpost to other services and empower people to find solutions and move forwards.
Emma talks about the work of the charity and its plans for helping the larger number of families that will be struggling to afford Christmas gifts for their children or to keep their homes warm this winter.
She outlines the First Days ethos of giving families back the gift of choice - often the first thing they lose when facing financial difficulties. The work involves the charity staff and volunteers needing to combine a soft heart to show empathy with a tough mind to get things done.
This winter, First Days is opening its new Elevate Centre in Wokingham, where families will be invited to choose from a range of children's Christmas gifts and items for a food hamper. They can also stay a while in the Snug, where children can play in a warm and welcoming environment while parents have a hot drink, charge devices, do some washing and access other services.
The charity is appealing to residents and businesses to help fund their work by making a donation or purchasing from their Amazon wish list.

With Halloween creeping up on us, the RG10 podcast has unearthed some of the area's spookiest tales.
There is the story of a ghostly horseman named Herne the Hunter. The legend goes that hundreds of years ago Herne committed an atrocity within Windsor Forest, and his tormented soul has on occasion been spotted in Twyford. He is easy to recognise, as he has antlers and attacks cattle. As the episode reveals, Herne the Hunter also appears in a Shakespeare play and in an episode of a 1980s teatime television drama.
Next, there is a story of a local hostelry where it is said that on occasion the cries of a distressed woman can be heard. This is said to hark back to when a previous landlord discovered that his wife was having an affair, so he threw her out and forbade her to see their only child ever again. Creepy.
Finally, the podcast visits Sonning, to regale you with a couple of chilling stories. The first takes place at The Mill at Sonning Theatre, where the details are a little sketchy. The second features top spoon bender and former Sonning resident Uri Geller. He shares with us a legend that will strike fear into any mortal soul, involving a mysterious post box and an apparition on the bridge.

It's late September, Strictly Come Dancing is back - and so are the annual taster sessions with Hurst Morris People!
Ben didn't need too much persuading to head to Hurst Village Hall to find out more. We learn a bit about Morris dancing as an English folk tradition, the Cotswold style (the one with sticks and hankies), versus other types, and a typical practice session with Hurst Morris People - affectionately known as HuMP.
He chats with several people who help to enlighten him and dispel a few myths: Karen Ricketts, the 'Squire' of the side, Brian, one of the teachers, and Rich, aged 28, who joined the side after a taster session last year and confirms it is a lot of fun.
Fancy meeting new people, learning some steps, having a laugh, enjoying some tea/coffee and cake (and maybe even a visit to the pub afterwards)? Then join Hurst Morris People at their taster session on Thursday 29 September 2022, from 8pm to 10pm at Hurst Village Hall, School Road, Hurst RG10 0DR.

Twyford Growers is a group of people who meet at the Hurst Road allotments in Twyford each Thursday between March and October. They may have been referred to the gardening scheme by NHS social prescribers to alleviate feelings of anxiety, depression and/or loneliness, or they may have self-referred to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing, or simply volunteered to help cultivate the plot specially dedicated to Twyford Growers.
The initiative began in late 2020 after Councillor Rohana Abeywardana, now Chairman of Twyford Parish Council, was inspired by the success of a similar scheme elsewhere. It has been set up by a group of councillors, professionals, and enthusiastic individuals, headed up by Twyford Parish Council working with Involve, Age UK Berkshire and NHS Social Prescribers based at Twyford Surgery. The scheme already won recognition in 2021 through the RHS Britain in Bloom 'It's Your Neighbourhood' community awards.
Twyford Growers take part in therapeutic gardening activities led by professional gardener and horticultural therapist Christina Hughes Nind. For the RG10 Podcast, Ben visited the Hurst Road allotments one Thursday over the summer and learnt more about the scheme from Christina. He also spoke to Linda, one of the regular Twyford Growers, who explained what she enjoys about the project.

Not a lot of people know this, but RG10 Podcast host Ben is also a musician who plays in a band - so sending him to check out this year's Marvellous Festival at Dinton Pastures was probably his ideal assignment!
He has a chat with Pete Lincoln, local musician and one of the festival's founder-directors, before getting backstage with one of the tribute acts: ReTake That and Robbie.
Marvellous Festival was founded 20 years ago, nowadays featuring no less than 14 top-class tribute bands over two days (23-24 July 2022). The magical setting at Dinton Pastures Country Park offers something for all ages, with plenty of children's entertainment, a funfair and a range of food and drink options as well as camping and glamping for those wanting to make a weekend of it.

Have you heard about Elsie Whip? No, not her (this is not that kind of podcast!) The L-C-WIP: Wokingham Borough Council's Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan...
The draft LCWIP has been formulated based on feedback from a public consultation carried out a year ago in July 2021. This summer, residents are being invited to review details of the plans, which are far-reaching and actually quite exciting. How much of it will end up being delivered will depend on the public response to the proposals, and, of course, how successful the council is in bidding for funding the various initiatives. The current public consultation period is open until Friday 19 August 2022 - links provided below.
The RG10 Podcast caught up with Paul Fishwick - the new Executive Member for Active Travel, Transport and Highways at Wokingham Borough Council.
He cites Department for Transport data showing that 60% of all car journeys are under five miles. There are huge opportunities if a good proportion of these could be switched to some form of 'active travel' - walking, cycling, wheeling, scooting or running.
The benefits would include improvements to public health (both physical and mental), reducing traffic levels, congestion and fuel bills (benefiting drivers), decreasing air and noise pollution, and lowering emissions that contribute to climate change.
At a local level, last year's consultation showed that there is high demand for improvements to the cycling and walking infrastructure. Many more people would adopt these activities with greater frequency if they felt safer and more confident, so the council is keen to create joined-up active travel routes that are separated from vehicle traffic.
We highlight some of the proposals that would benefit RG10 residents in particular, such as improving access from Charvil to Twyford Station, with an option to extend the walking and cycling route to Woodley. There is a separate consultation for a route connecting Woodley with Palmer Park in Reading.
Having a good LCWIP is essential for the council to have the best chance of securing funding, so we encourage all interested Wokingham Borough Council residents to take the time to give their feedback to the plan.

As is the case at many busy junctions, there's something in the air at the Twyford crossroads, and it's not good. The centre of the village has high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) - over 40 micro milligrammes per cubic metre, which is detrimental to health. For the most part this is attributable to emissions from engines idling at the traffic lights.
This is nothing new: the junction was designated an Air Quality Management Area back in late 2015. The Public Protection Partnership monitors NO2 levels regularly and reports the findings to Defra.
WBC's Active Travel Officer, Kathryn Horsepool - part of the My Journey team. She talks about the Wokingham Air Quality Project and the work being carried out with schools such as the Colleton to promote active travel. This means encouraging more children to walk, cycle or use a scooter instead of being driven to school. The children also get involved in monitoring air quality around the school gates at peak times.
As for the situation at Twyford crossroads, Kathryn highlights the campaign to encourage drivers to switch off engines instead of idling at the traffic lights. There is signage on lampposts, but more work is being done to raise awareness in order to change behaviour. There is a role for local businesses to play in this.

More information:
The project's targets are to:
- Achieve a 3% reduction in the number of children driven to school
- Work with 10 schools in the target areas to promote and deliver activities relating to air quality, active travel and climate change
- To work with 6 target schools to achieve Modeshift stars accreditation and monitor the Air Quality.

Henley Festival CEO Jo Bausor gives us the lowdown on the 40th anniversary of Henley's iconic music and arts event, being held this week from Wed 6th to Sunday 10 July.
After two years of disruption due to the Covid pandemic, everyone is looking forward to getting 'back to normal'. Many festival goers will be focusing on the key attractions on the floating stage, including Sir Tom Jones, The Script, Craig David, Katherine Jenkins, Pete Tong, Katherine Jenkins and Jack Savoretti. Yet there is a wide choice of entertainment to enjoy across the site - not just music but also comedy, street theatre, art and gastronomic experiences.
Jo admits that organising the festival has not been plain sailing due to ongoing supply and staffing issues, but all is now in place for a fabulous few days on the banks of the River Thames.
She is also excited about the festival's new 'Rise' initiative. Described as 'supporting emerging talent in front and behind the spotlight', the scheme involves offering young people work experience in the arts, whether performing or exhibiting or behind the scenes. Launched for the 40th anniversary, Jo envisages Rise will be an integral part of Henley Festival every year, hopefully in future offering financial support for equipment and bursaries for further education.
The festival certainly remains true to its original purpose of supporting young emerging talent, as well as local charities.

Ben has outdone himself this time. Our intrepid podcast host has donned his wetsuit and gatecrashed the regular early morning river swim of a pod of Twyford mermaids.
Wait, one of them sounds familiar... it's the voice of Jules Lang, well known to listeners of BBC Radio 2 and Radio Berkshire. The broadcaster lives locally and is a dedicated open water swimmer.
After braving the water for a while, Ben catches up with Jules and friends to learn more about the appeal - and the dangers! - of open water swimming, why it has gained in popularity in recent years, and how the Berkshire Thames beats the London Thames hands down. One thing is clear: these types are determined to keep the exact location of their favourite swim spots a closely guarded secret!
Please help us support Jules in her challenge: this Sunday (26 June 2022) she is taking part for the second time in the Henley Classic, a 2.1km swim UPSTREAM over the course of the Henley Royal Regatta. She's helping to raise funds for Starlight UK, the national charity that facilitates play activities for seriously ill children in hospital and enables others to take part in a programme of events and experiences. Read her story and make a donation if you can, before or after the event: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jules-lang2.
This doesn't sound like work at all...
Picture a sunny afternoon in May, at the beautiful setting of Stanlake Park Wine Estate in Twyford. Cue RG10 Podcast producer Ben, enjoying a guided tour and fascinating chat with General Manager Natalia Pezzone - over a bottle of white wine, naturally.
How did this former vet from Argentina come to be so passionate and knowledgeable about good quality wines?
What's her connection to Stanlake's award-winning Italian winemaker, Nico Centonze?
When were the first vineyards planted at Stanlake Park?
What has changed in the last three years in terms of public perception of the wine estate?
Why is the English wine industry such an exciting field to work in?
Why will we never see a Stanlake Malbec?
What grape varieties do well in a cool climate?
Which of Stanlake's 12 or so wines is Natalia's favourite?
How does a product that starts as grapes end up tasting of gooseberry, peach and pear?
For the answers to these questions and more, have a listen to the podcast!

Have you felt traumatised by the end of a marriage or other significant relationship? You are not alone. It can be hard to believe that you could ever be happy again, let alone that the best might yet be to come.
Many people have found it helpful to attend a course run over two consecutive weekends by the Divorce Recovery Workshop, aimed at helping people make sense of their feelings, understand and let go of the past and set the foundations for a brighter future.
Thirty years after the first Divorce Recovery Workshop was held near Maidenhead, the national charity now runs courses in various locations around the country. In this podcast we hear from Seamus Jennings, one of the volunteers running the workshop in Earley, Berkshire.
He explains how the course is based on a model of mutual support and self help, consisting of a series of video presentations addressing different themes, each followed by a group discussion facilitated by volunteers who have previously been through the course themselves.
The workshop helps people understand what they are going through, provides support from others in similar situations and helps people adjust to their new status. It is complementary to any professional help or other support that may be in place, such as legal advice or formal counselling. The emphasis is on recovery: not just going through but growing through the experience, learning about oneself and preparing the way for a happier future relationship.

2022 is the 60th anniversary year for local choir, Twyford Singers. We catch up with them during rehearsals for their traditional Easter concert, to be held in St Mary's church in Twyford on Palm Sunday, 10 April.
The concert will include music from the 8th century to the 20th, as well as a new composition of 'Gloria, laus et honor' by Simon Rigby, a previous musical director of Twyford Singers.
In this podcast we hear from choir members Sue Corcoran and Celia Reinbolt. They reassure Ben that he'd be most welcome if he fancied joining! No previous experience is required, nor an ability to read music, though this is helpful. In between rehearsals, choir members continue to improve thanks to the practice files available online. As well as the joy of singing together, members appreciate the social side and friendships made.
Diary date: The Twyford Singers' Summer Concert will take place on 25 June at Loddon Hall, Twyford. This will be an opportunity to hear performances of the three finalists shortlisted in the composition competition held to mark the 60th anniversary of the choir. Entries were invited on the theme of Hope, Joy and Celebration and there was a fantastic response. A panel of illustrious musicians will attend the concert and judge the winner.
Twyford Singers are ably led by musical director Helen Stiles, with the help of accompanist Judith Creighton.

Plenty of famous people play the ukulele, including George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan, The Rock, Tom Hanks, Barack Obama, Taylor Swift and Madonna. George Harrison was a huge fan, apparently, keeping ukuleles all over his house in Henley.
However, the instrument is accessible to all: relatively inexpensive to buy and easy to pick up quite quickly, it provides anyone with an enjoyable way of making music.
Players have even more fun if part of a group such as the Twyford Ukulele Collective, founded by local music teacher Jenny Preece. Apart from the opportunity to make new friends, you get to learn a bunch of tunes, play different harmony parts and even perform at local community events.
This episode of the RG10 Podcast was recorded in March 2022 with the Twyford Ukulele Collective at Hare Hatch Sheeplands. Hear some of the music as well as conversations with the founder and some of the members. Fancy joining in?!

This is a story weaving together royal connections with a bit of local history, highlighting an activity suitable for all ages and a community social hub, the fundraising effort towards a building fit for purpose, and the resilience and humour of club members faced with the aftermath of a storm.
Ben visited Hurst Bowling Club in February 2022, soon after Storm Eunice felled a large tree by the adjacent Castle Inn, destroying the old outside toilet of the club. He talks to Ronnie Ashley, a committee member with responsibility for fundraising, about the 275-year-old club and its role in the community, the appeal of the sport, and the desperate need for a new clubhouse - even before this latest setback.

Do you suffer from chronic pain? Do you wish you could be free of it for good and take back control of your life?
Stay tuned for this interview with Dr Sarah Bryan, a physical therapist dedicated to achieving that freedom for every client, drawing on the services of a multidisciplinary team as necessary.
Sarah talks us through her holistic approach, working with the body to find imbalances, release restrictions and retrain the brain to keep the adjustments made. She may work with clients over several months, possibly including referrals to experts in other fields such as nutrition, exercise or podiatry in order to achieve the best results.
Her clients are happy to make that commitment, typically coming to her after living for years with unresolved pain, migraines or troublesome scar tissue. Very often they achieve fantastic results, leaving not only free of pain but also feeling more confident and younger in body and mind.
We also hear something about Sarah's own challenges. Born with total sight loss, she is one of very few completely blind people to achieve a Ph.D. No doubt her visual impairment has contributed to her communication skills and the power of her 'listening hands'. Since the start of the Covid pandemic she has also been offering mentoring services to others with sight loss, helping them to tap into their own strengths in order to lead fulfilling lives.
With such an inspirational story, it's no surprise to learn that Sarah's future ambitions include contributing to research and treating the most vulnerable in society.
Dr Sarah Bryan has been in clinical practice for over a decade and is currently based in Theale.

Spoiler alert: Kindness is alive and well! We just need to recognise and celebrate it more.In this episode of the RG10 Podcast, we hear about two online spaces dedicated to sharing the good stuff that we humans are capable of. All too often, both in business and in private life, we focus on what's tough or difficult. We forget to be grateful for (or even notice) the everyday kindness we receive, or to consider how we ourselves can take action to make life better for others. Brightening someone's morning or helping them in a difficult situation are just as valid as making a positive impact in the long term. So, banish any more thoughts about so-called 'Blue Monday' this January and give a warm welcome to our inspiring guests. Meriel Hart - Co-founder and admin of the Twyford Kindness Facebook group. Created 4 years ago, primarily to facilitate fundraising and collecting items donated for local charities and PTAs, the group has grown into a community of 1,400 members. This 'kindness army' uses the group to share positive posts, seek and give support, publicise charity events and celebrate successes.
Sarah Browning - Communications strategy professional based in Woodley and founder of Time For Kindness. The website includes #ProjectAmplifyKindess, sharing stories of kindness to inspire and uplift, and a series of blog posts designed to spark ideas and motivate actions to generate kindness. In the words of this kindness cheerleader, even when facing challenges, 'If we can deliberately and explicitly look for kindness - and see the kindness rather than focusing on that negativity - it does create a virtuous circle.
Happy New Year! Have you resolved to be more active in 2022, take up a new hobby, get outside more or make new friends? Here's an idea that offers all of that and more - the sport of walking football.Yes - walking football is a game in its own right, requiring players to adhere to the principles of minimal contact with other players and, obviously, no running. We chat to Cornelius O'Kane, Secretary of Woodley Pensioners Football Club. Despite the name, membership is by no means restricted to retired people in RG5! The club runs three walk-in sessions on different days of the week, at different times of the day, at different locations, both indoor and outdoor. They offer a warm welcome to players of any standard or new to the game - as a guideline, men over 50 and women over 40.Cornelius explains that founder members like himself are generally older, the club having evolved from a medical recovery group set up under Wokingham Borough Council's SHINE programme (activities for the over 60s). Nowadays the club has several league teams offering the opportunity for competitive matches as well as the informal drop-in sessions. Woodley Pensioners FC is a very social group with the emphasis on enjoyment and friendship. The club has been a lifeline for members during the Covid pandemic, helping to keep everyone connected even during the lockdowns.Cornelius explains that the club would love to welcome as many new people as possible this year, both to reduce the average age of the membership and to swell the female ranks. At just £3 a session, there's not much to lose, yet so much to gain: walking football could just prove to be the fun activity you've been looking for!Links for more information:https://www.woodleypensionersfc.co.uk/https://www.facebook.com/groups/2471545943031593https://rg10mag.com/item/woodley-pensioners-football-club/
Oh, yes it is! Pantomime is that peculiarly British music hall tradition of family-friendly comedy productions, usually based on a fairy tale or fable, with cross-dressing actors in the lead roles and some element of audience participation.Families around the RG10 area are spoilt for choice this winter, with three different pantomimes to look forward to in January. Local theatre groups in Twyford, Hurst and Wargrave have all been rehearsing hard in order to bring laughter and enjoyment to audiences of all ages in the new year. We bring you the lowdown direct from the (pantomime?) horses' mouths...Twyford & Ruscombe Theatre Group lets down their hair first, performing Rapunzel from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 January. One of the directors, Peter King, tells us what's new (extra matinee!), talks about Covid safety and gives a little reminder about the story. Expect a fairy tale given the traditional pantomime treatment with a comedy duo, a wicked witch, a captive beauty and a handsome prince, and of course cross-dressing, music, singing and dancing.https://twyrusdrama.org.uk/Hurst Pantomime Group follow next, staging A Lad in the Wild West from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 January. Running the show is a dream team of youth (Hannah Guile, director), and experience (Claire Lawrence, producer), who give some great insights into panto, Hurst style. Expect a rethinking of Aladdin set on a ranch in Texas rather than the Arabian desert, with horses as well as a flying carpet. Hurst productions involve most of the village, from the sound of it!https://www.hurstpanto.org.uk/Last but not least, Wargrave Theatre Workshop transport us to Camelot from Wednesday 26 to Sun 30 January. Director Linda Daman talks about the importance of using each cast member's strengths and outlines the tale of good versus evil, as Arthur and the evil prince face off in the quest for Guinevere's hand in marriage. Expect knights, dragons, wizards and damsels - and, of course, wonderful songs and terrible jokes.https://wargravetheatre.co.uk/For performance times, venue details and ticket sales visit the relevant links above. This podcast is going out on 8 December 2021: are you feeling festive yet? If not, this will help - a soundtrack of the Twyford Christmas Fayre, held in the village centre last Friday! It was fantastic seeing so many people out supporting the Twyford Together event. Throughout the evening people of all ages were enjoying themselves amongst the stalls, street entertainers and musical performances - not to mention the Riverways Reindeer and a visit by Father Christmas himself. RG10 Podcast host/producer Ben went along too, and struck up conversations with an interesting mix of people. He began by seeking out Stephen Conway, Chairman of the Twyford Christmas Fayre Committee. Involved since the start about twenty years ago, Stephen gives an insight into the history of the event and how much work goes on behind the scenes to make it happen. Stay with Ben as he learns how Twyford Comets FC attract visitors to their stall, nearly comes a cropper with street entertainer/juggler Jonny, and asks a New Zealander recently relocated to the village for his first impressions.------------------------------------Twyford Together and the Twyford Christmas Fayre Committee would like to thank Bridge House Nursing Home, Grapevine Estate Agents and the Louis Baylis Charitable Trust for their generous support for this event.https://twyfordtogether.org/
Dave Lamont is a regular guy: a Berkshire resident with a good job and young family. He explains who and what inspired him to set up the Plastic Free Home in 2018: a blog and Facebook community dedicated to seeking and sharing ideas for more sustainable living.Hot on the heels of COP26, the global climate summit in Glasgow, we know that the urgency has never been greater for human behaviour to change, yet the task can feel insurmountable. What difference can we make as individuals to the race against time?Plastic Free Home has clearly struck a chord, with over 35,000 followers. The idea is simple: everyone can play a part by adopting small changes in their daily life that all add up. The more people that choose to make a difference, the greater the global impact. Dave writes regularly (including in RG10 magazine) on subjects such as avoiding single use plastics, reducing waste, protecting the natural world and supporting ethical businesses that share these values. In this podcast, he suggests what to consider for a more eco-friendly Christmas, from making more sustainable choices when it comes to gifts, wrapping and food to prioritising what really matters - friends, family and quality time over yet more 'stuff'. Listen in for some great tips for making gifts more meaningful and reducing waste.Talking about environmental initiatives in the local area, Dave acknowledges the contribution of Twyford Together (the community organisation behind TRIP - Twyford Rethinks Its Plastic, TerraCycle schemes and Bee Friendly Together), Twyford Parish Council with its tree planting events, the good level of engagement in local schools and positive measures by Wokingham Borough Council. In this episode we hear how the enjoyment of playing an instrument, the enduring appeal of folk music, and the vision of a local man underpin the continued success of the monthly Twyford Folk Music Workshop.Colin McEwen explains how he set up the group in 2013 largely for his own enjoyment, then discovered a pool of people either interested in progressing their current playing ability or keen to get back into music after leaving it behind earlier in life. The monthly workshops have attracted an average of 10-12 musicians throughout the past eight years: whilst some are regulars, there is a steady flow of people coming in and others moving on to new things after gaining sufficiently in confidence. We hear about the format of a typical workshop and how it accommodates musicians of varying abilities and helps them develop their skills within a supportive group. We also learn how Colin found a way to continue playing together during lockdown, unintentionally providing free entertainment in several local neighbourhoods! The Twyford Folk Music Workshop meets on the first Wednesday evening of the month, from 8pm to 10pm at St Mary's Church Centre in Twyford. For more information visit http://twyfordmusic.uk/.
Gone are the days when it was cool to boast about only needing a few hours' sleep. We now have a much greater understanding of how important sleep is for our overall health and wellbeing. Yet what constitutes 'good sleep hygiene', and what is the best approach to take for anyone having trouble sleeping?Who better to dispel the myths and outline best practice than chartered psychologist, neuroscientist, author and sleep expert Dr Lindsay Browning? Based in Wokingham, she set up Trouble Sleeping in 2006. Through talks, consultations and workshops she helps people improve their sleep and wellbeing through sleep therapy and advice based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia. On this episode of the RG10 Podcast, Dr Browning challenges the notion of 'a bad nights' sleep', discusses the impact of Covid, lifestyle factors and devices that monitor sleep, and highlights the importance of getting out of the house during daylight hours. The interview covers sleep cycles, circadian rhythms, jet lag and the physiological processes that occur during sleep, making it clear how important it is to prioritise this essential activity. (Or should that be inactivity?) For more about Dr Browning's work, visit https://troublesleeping.co.uk. She has also written a self-help book, Navigating Sleeplessness, aimed at helping people understand why they may not be sleeping very well and offering practical strategies to improve it.
Jo Bausor has been busy since being appointed CEO of Henley Festival in January 2021. Her decade-long experience as part of the management team has been invaluable in bringing the event back to life following its cancellation during the 2020 pandemic. After navigating through many challenges through the year, she can finally celebrate the return of Henley's iconic black-tie music and arts festival, which opens tonight on the banks of the River Thames. Talking to us ten days ago at the start of the infrastructure build, Jo shares with us some of the hurdles that have been overcome along with a few unexpected twists and turns, and she outlines what audiences can look forward to. In the end all that matters is that the original headline acts booked for 2020 will finally be making it to the floating stage, there will once again be plenty of music, comedy, street theatre, art and gastronomic experiences throughout the site, and no doubt everyone will be more than ready for the excuse to dress up in their glad rags and have a proper party! Highlights include Madness, James Blunt, Sophie Ellis Bextor, an 80s DJ set from Sara Cox and disco party with Kathy Sledge, and a specially commissioned show for the closing night: Don't Stop Me Now, celebrating the music of Queen, the Bee Gees and Abba. Henley Festival began as a small charity event following on from Henley Royal Regatta and using the same infrastructure. Now an internationally renowned music and arts festival that will mark its 40th anniversary in 2022, it remains true to its original purpose of supporting young local emerging talent and local charities. Henley Festival 2021 runs from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 September. For the full programme and ticket sales, visit https://henley-festival.co.uk.
With just a month to go until the Henley Literary Festival, we catch up with Events and Programme Director Harriet Reed-Ryan. Reflecting on the experience of running the 2020 festival online due to the pandemic, she explains how some key successes are being carried over. For example, the schools programme will run online only, having seen audiences increase almost fivefold last year. The 2021 festival will offer a blend of in-person events, some with a live-streaming option, and online-only events. Ahead of the main festival running from 2 to 10 October, on each Monday in September there will be an online interview with an author located elsewhere in the world.Henley Literary Festival traditionally uses several venues around the town: this year the Town Hall, the River & Rowing Museum and Christ Church will be joined by a larger purpose-built marquee in the grounds of Phyllis Court. When asked which author bookings made her dance a jig, Harriet mentioned radio presenters and podcasters Fi Glover and Jane Garvey, who will be closing the festival, and other lockdown stars such as fitness guru Joe Wickes, draw-along artist Rob Biddulph, and kitchen disco pop icon Sophie Ellis-Bextor. She reckons the whole programme is the best ever offered in the festival's 15 year history: take a look and you're bound to agree. The writers include literary greats, politicians, sports stars, broadcasters, comedians and more, all carefully matched with interviewers also including many well-known names.Henley Literary Festival - Saturday 2 to Sunday 10 October 2021Programme of events and tickets - https://henleyliteraryfestival.co.uk

Ever fancied trying your hand at bowling? As in lawn bowls, not the indoor ten-pin type - and nothing to do with cricket.Isn't it a sport for old people? Not necessarily. It does have that reputation, but nowadays bowling clubs are attracting younger people and family memberships are gaining in popularity. Our intrepid podcast host and producer, Ben, was keen to have a go (any excuse to bunk off!) He headed down to Twyford Bowling Club and caught up with its chairperson, Ann Harris, who kindly showed him the ropes. Or rather, the green, the mat, the jack and the woods... Ann outlines the history of the club, its connection to a well-known brewery, its membership and its events. Ben sounds confident as they head out onto the green ... listen to the commentary to learn how he gets on! Although bowling is often perceived as a genteel past-time for later life, Ann explains that league matches are fiercely contested and there is strong rivalry between local clubs in 'friendlies', even between mates playing a social game. The social side and friendships are key: membership includes a purely social option enabling non-players to join the events. Curious to learn more? After the success of its Open Days in attracting new members, Twyford Bowling Club is giving people another chance to try bowling by going along to their Fun Day: - Sunday 15 August 2021- 2pm to 5pm- Twyford Bowling Club, 12a Wargrave Road, Twyford RG10 9PGMore information: www.twyfordbowlingclub.org.ukSearch Twyford Bowling Club on Facebook for the latest news.
Could this year's Henley Arts Trail be the best one yet? Absolutely! Offering free entry to 39 venues showcasing the work of around 200 artists over two weekends in July, HAT presents the perfect opportunity to get out and about, explore a beautiful area and combine art with conversation - maybe even some shopping. The dates for HAT 2021 are 10-11 and 17-18 July. A few venues are only open on one of the weekends so do check online and plan your route in advance. HAT has gone from strength to strength since it began 15 years ago. We speak to four of the artists, some involved since the start and others new to the trail. As one of the three founder members, Kirsten Jones talks about the early years planned largely around her kitchen table and a bottle of wine! She explains HAT's origins and the thinking behind its pink branding. Kirsten's paintings invoke a sense of place and history through the use of a colour palette inspired by water and light, and collage items including pieces of vintage maps. Find Kirsten's work with Love Local Art, venue no. 13, the Chocolate Cafe in Henley. (Open 10-18 July.)Chris Harper is a member of the current organising committee. He describes changing the way HAT is promoted these days to an online focus, no longer reliant on the widespread circulation of a printed leaflet. Their social media presence has seen a steady stream of highly visual posts showcasing the work of particular artists, often grouped according to a theme. Chris and several other artists can be found at venue 39 on the trail, Micklems Farm in Knowl Hill - a beautiful venue with stunning gardens also offering teas. (Open 10-11 and 12 July.)Nicole Etienne is a recent arrival to the area but as an artist inspired by the meeting of skies and water, particularly at dawn and dusk, she has found it a joy to paint in the kitchen of her riverside home. (Ben is stunned to discover a connection with a famous drag entertainer!) Nicole describes her style of painting as opulent and almost sculptural, combining thickly applied paints with metallic elements and crushed glass. She is exhibiting no less than 25 paintings at venue 20, Pool House Cottage in Mill Lane, Henley. (Open 10-11 and 17-18 July.) New to the trail this year, Vanessa Beresford is a stained glass artist based in Twyford. As well as exhibiting her work she is running workshops on the second weekend for a maximum of 3 people per session. These offer beginners the opportunity to have a go themselves, from cutting glass pieces, then copper foiling them in the Tiffany style, to adding a hook in order to hang their finished item to catch the light. Vanessa will be at venue 33, Twyford Glass Studio in Hermitage Drive. (Open 10-11 and 17-18 July.)Visit www.henleyartstrail.com for a trail map and information about the venues, facilities, dates and timings.Follow @henleyartstrail on Facebook or Instagram for more detailed information and news about the artists and their work.

Last year during the coronavirus pandemic the community really pulled together and several aspects of the Hurst Show did go ahead, partly online. This year's show will be held over the weekend of Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 June 2021 and much of the familiar activities will be back. The Twyford (Berkshire) Facebook group was created nine years ago by local resident Janette Vorster – apparently accidentally! She is still one of the admins who volunteer their time to moderate what has become a very large and highly engaged closed community of people connected with Twyford. Janette tells the story behind the group that has become an integral part of everyday life for many local residents and businesses. So much so that the admins were recognised in the 2019 Twyford Together Community Awards, winning Community Group of the Year – to their great surprise and delight. To prevent the group being overrun by commercial messages, the moderators apply strict advertising rules which can be viewed in full under the Files tab on the Facebook group. Here’s a brief overview:- Advertisers must live or have a business or charity in Twyford or surrounding villages.- Business adverts can be posted once per calendar month on either the 1st or 15th.- Charities and non-profit groups are also limited to once a month but not a specific day.- Personal adverts selling or giving away used items are not permitted. If you live locally and value the community and heritage of the area, you are welcome to request to join the Twyford (Berkshire) Facebook group. Visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/310912188982848.
Twyford-based charity Understanding Dementia has been receiving great feedback about its free training course for family and friend carers. We chat to one participant, Helen, whose mother has Alzheimer’s Disease. Unsure how best to support her parents, who live at some distance, she signed up for the course in late 2020. Helen talks about taking part in the online training via eight live Zoom sessions, and explains the positive impact it has had on her own wellbeing as well as that of both her parents. With a greater understanding of how her mother experiences the world, Helen is applying the Understanding Dementia approach and communicating more effectively at the level of feelings rather than facts. Helen recommends the course to anyone wishing to learn how to support someone with dementia, whether they live with them, in their own home, or in residential care. Vanessa Holburn is a local author, supporter of environmental initiatives, and campaigner against animal cruelty. Her latest book, ‘How to pick a puppy: An ethical guide to choosing the perfect pet’ is aimed at would-be pet owners. With the marked increase in pet ownership during the coronavirus lockdown, we thought it a good idea to ask Vanessa about the potential problems that new dog owners could face as lockdown restrictions start to be lifted. Vanessa reveals what these issues are and how they can be overcome.Vanessa also talks about how the surge in demand for dogs – and consequently prices – has led to a sharp rise in the incidence of pet theft. This is not yet a specific crime in its own right, but a campaign is under way to reform the law.Vanessa was part of the group that fought successfully for new legislationagainst puppy and kitten farming, leading to Lucy’s Law being introduced inearly 2020. This seeks to put an end to high volume suppliers breedingcontinuously from mothers often kept in low welfare conditions. ‘How to pick a puppy’ by Vanessa Holburn is available in paperback from allgood book sellers. It gives practical advice on how to research the type of dog to best suit your household and also what to look for in a rescue centre or breeder. A couple of years ago Gordon Holmes was a man on a mission: to engage the local community in addressing the prevalence of single use plastics, with the aim of reducing litter and the harmful effect on the environment and wildlife. Alison Hesketh is the founder and director of TimeFinders Senior Life Specialists, offering practical and emotional support for older people and their families as they adjust to changing circumstances. And we all know how much of that there’s been in 2020… TimeFinders was launched in the RG10 area but now covers all of the Thames Valley and central southern England. In this episode Alison explains how she and her team spend time working with individuals and listening to their stories, helping them with everything from handling paperwork and making plans for the future to downsizing, freeing up family members to spend more quality time with their loved ones. We also hear some examples of the more unusual services offered, such as Advocacy in the event a client loses capacity, representing their interests and bridging the gap between the legal and financial professionals and the medical and care providers. As we approach the end of this challenging year, Alison reflects on the positive decisions for change made by so many families since the first coronavirus lockdown and expresses her belief that the high uptake of the Covid-19 vaccine amongst the older generation will enable a return to a more normal life in 2021. Sometimes if you have a good idea, you just need to run with it and others will join you in support. This is what happened earlier this year for Rebecca Howard, whose desire to improve the environment by planting trees in her local community won the backing of Twyford Parish Council and quickly gained momentum with local residents and businesses. Within a few weeks her crowdfunding campaign attracted sufficient supporters to make The Big Twyford Tree Planting Project a reality. We catch up with Rebecca at Stanlake Meadow, where over 60 trees are due to be planted on Saturday 6 December – delayed by one week from the original date due to the November coronavirus lockdown. Many trees will bear a dedication plaque naming their donor. RG10 is delighted to be supplying a Hornbeam. An artist living in Twyford, Rebecca tells us about the origins of the idea and her hopes for the future. We also hear from fellow volunteers working on site: Malcolm Bray of Twyford Parish Council and environmental campaigner Stephen Loyd, coordinator of the Friends of Ruscombe Wood conservationgroup. Can you help?Join the Friends of Stanlake Copse to help care for the trees in future.Email Rebecca on rt200@postmaster.co.uk .Useful links:Crowdfunding page –https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/twyford-tree-planting-project-2020 Facebook event – https://www.facebook.com/events/862749910850514/Articles in RG10 magazine – https://issuu.com/rg10mag/docs/mar-apr_2020/14 and https://issuu.com/rg10mag/docs/nov-dec_2020/41
Charities need support from the business community now more than ever, with fundraising events hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. And businesses need ways to demonstrate their values, ethics and social responsibility to consumers in a competitive marketplace. Connect Charity is an organisation based in Berkshire that facilitates partnerships between charities and businesses – you could say it acts as a Corporate Social Responsibility matchmaking agency. Director Vickie Randall outlines some of the reasons behind such collaborations and how they can benefit both sides. Whilst acknowledging the pressures faced in 2020, she also sees the positives coming out of these challenging times, with many organisations both small and large taking the opportunity to reassess their purpose, explore opportunities and embrace change where necessary. Connect Charity is well placed to help both charities and businesses to ‘build back better’ in a new climate of collective endeavour benefiting the wider community. http://www.connectcharity.co.uk/

Henley Festival is normally one of the highlights of the summer social calendar – a five-day black tie celebration of music and arts, held on the banks of the River Thames. After Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 event, it was the job of artistic director Stewart Collins to rebook all the acts for the following year. The good news is that all the same artists have been confirmed in the line-up for 2021, including headliners Madness, James Blunt and Sophie Ellis-Bextor all taking a turn on the floating stage. We learn about Stewart’s first career as a performer, his involvement in a disastrous TV programme involving members of the royal family, and how he landed his dream job with the festival. He gives us a unique insight into the challenges of booking leading acts, from competing against other festivals to the demands made by some of the artists. And top of his wish list if money were no object? Have a listen to find out! https://henley-festival.co.uk/
