And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose (Mark 9:25-27).

But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” (Mark 8:14-21).

And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And Jesus charged them to tell no one. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person” (Mark 7:14-23).

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do” (Mark 7:8-13).

“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men’" (Mark 7:5-7).

Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men’" (Mark 7:1-7).

When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well (Mark 6:53-56).

He meant to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish" (Mark 6:30-38).

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them (Mark 6:6-13).

They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement (Mark 5:35-42).

And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled (Mark 5:14-20).

It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” And he strictly ordered them not to make him known (Mark 3:7-12)
Jesus leaves the wickedness of the Pharisees and begins ministering to the common people around Him. They knew what He was doing and they flocked to Him. In this particular crowd, there were two types of people. Those who didn't know their needs and those who did. Those who knew their needs pressed in to touch Him so much He was in danger of bring crushed! Which type are you? Press into Jesus. Know your need.

And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him (Mark 3:1-6).
Noticed the Pharisees' response to Jesus. They sought to kill Him. But Jesus response to their sin was a righteous anger. But His response was also filled with grieving and pity.

And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. Jesus is again in the synagogue. He singled out one man in need of healing. He asked the Pharisees a question they are too afraid to answer. But consider the joy of this man who had been disabled for an unknown number of years. His hand was fully and powerfully restored. We know individuals who have had withered souls their entire lives. And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath." (Mark 2:27-28).
The whole point of the Sabbath day is a rest from our regular routine as an opportunity to spend quality time with God. The Pharisees redefined it to the end it became a burden. Jesus makes it clear Sabbath is a gift that should be delighted in!

One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath" (Mark 2:23-28).
Beware of Christ-less religion. It is a heavy burden. First the disciples were criticised for not fasting. Now they are criticised for reaping. But the problem wasn't the actions of the disciples but the hearts of the Pharisees who embraced a dead religion that had nothing to do with the living Lord.

No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
This is a parable that has caused some conclusion, but there is a simple application to it for us today. Do not hold to old religion, hold to Christ. Release the old life and embrace newness of life found only in Jesus!

Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day (Mark 2:18-20)
The followers of Jesus faced criticism early on in their walk with Jesus. That is not an uncommon event. But the essence of the criticism in this passage is that the disciples don't fast. But what is fasting? When and why should we fast?

And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners” (Mark 2:16-17)
Jesus was criticized for eating with tax collectors and other sinners. And praise Him that He is willing still to meet with and heal sinners today. Cry out to HIm to heal your sin-sickness. And if He has already healed you, be like Levi and bring them to meet Jesus, the Redeemer of sinners.

And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him (Mark 2:15).
Levi was radically changed by his contact with Jesus. He wants to bring his friends to his home to meet with Jesus. What were conversations around the table like? Without a doubt Jesus engaged different people there and discussed their souls. Are we wiling to to do the same?

He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him (Mark 2:13-14).
There is nothing about Levi that made Him want to draw near to Jesus. Jesus saw him, approached him, and called him to become a follower. The response is immediate and remarkable. What about you?

And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this" (Mark 2:5-12)
If Jesus had never come to earth, He could have looked upon us from heaven and pitied us. But He could not forgive sins. But because He came to the earth and lived perfectly and sinlessly, died a ransom for many, and rose from the dead, He has the authority and ability to forgive sins.

How do we know Jesus has the power to forgive sins? Because He has and He does. How do we know if we have been forgiven? It is exemplified by a radically changed life.

A paralyzed man was brought to Jesus. He wanted healing of his physical ailment. He wanted to walk. But his greatest need was not his legs being repaired. His greatest need to reconciliation with God. Jesus answered the first need first.

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay (Mark 2:1-4).
It ought to be our great joy to bring people to Jesus. If you can't bring someone physically, bring them spiritually regardless of the cost.

And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them (Mark 2:1)
When surrounded by people, Jesus did what was most beneficial to their souls. He preached the gospel to them. Their need is our need. We need to hear the gospel message just as they did 2,000 years ago.

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home (Mark 2:1).
Today we begin reading chapter two of Mark and we must stop at the very beginning of the story to look at the fact Jesus returned to Capernaum. How many times have you heard the gospel? All your life God has held out His arm to you, why do you resist?
If you are a believer stay close to Him! What mercy and grace and patience there is in our Savior!

But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter (Mark 1:45).
Yesterday we read where Jesus told the lepor to not tell anyone. But today we read the lepor disobeyed. When Jesus Christ speaks, we are to do nothing but obey. The lepor's reaction resulted in Jesus no longer being able to work in that area.
How do we know if we need the spur or the bridle? It only comes from listening to the guiding of the Spirit. He will speak and give us that spirit of wisdom and discernment. And we must obey.

...and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them” (Mark 1:44).
Interestingly, in some cases Jesus commands people to go and tell what the Lord has done for the people. But in this case Jesus commands the man not tell anyone. How do we apply this? Is there a season when we would do best to be quiet and not speak to people about what has been done to us? Andy offers a great application to this powerful story.

And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean (Mark 1:40-42).
Leprosy is a powerful picture of sin. A person afflicted with this disease was completely cut off from society. We are utterly cut off from God because of our sin sickness. The beauty of gospel is that just as Jesus was willing to heal that lepor, Jesus is willing to heal us.

In this episode of Jesus with the lepor, we see not only His ability to heal. We also get a glimpse of His compassion through His willingness to save. He not only healed the lepor, he TOUCHED the lepor. He is willing to reach out and touch you who have not yet been healed from the disease of sin. For you who are believers, Jesus is willing to forgive again. Come in repentance to Him.

Leprosy is a terrible, terrifying disease, affecting every part of the body. It excluded you from all of society because the disease was so unclean. This man was full of leprosy. His body was covered. With faith this man drug himself to Jesus. See his faith. He knows Jesus can heal if only He is willing. Let us praise Him that He was and is willing to heal. And no only is He willing, He is willing! He has the power to heal us today just as He had then.

And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons (Mark 1:36-39).
The day after Jesus had preformed many healing miracles, the people rose early looking for Him. But Jesus went out not just to heal, but also to preach! Jesus shows the two priorities of His earlthly ministry here: prayer and proclamation. Read the Bible, know it, know the God of the Bible and proclaim it.

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed (Mark 1:35)
Before the sun had risen, Jesus was awake and communing with the Father in prayer. Jesus led a life od disciplined prayer. Before the day began, He spent time laying out His day before the Father, recognizing His needs and presenting them to His loving, caring, providing Father.
