I Can't Sleep Horror: Recent Episodes

Frank Schumpert

Welcome to I Can't Sleep Horror. Original horror fiction by Frank S.

After years of listening to horror podcasts/YouTube channels I found that my main enjoyment is temporarily forgetting all my worldly concerns. It's one of the few magical moments us grown-ups can still experience in this life. I hope to impart some of that magic I've come to depend on from my favorite authors, to you dear listener.

My stories are all original to me. I'm inspired by simple story telling. Very few bells and whistles. Email: asorrowfullife@gmail.com

Thoughts from the Labyrinth: Robert Greene’s books, especially “33 Strategies” are what I’d call “mental porn” for young men and targeted to those same just starting out life or new chapter. The so-called rules do not correlate to real life and if you attempt to utilize these rules in your world, you’ll find yourself terminated, sued civilly, or otherwise face a truckload of shit barreling down upon you. It’s best to treat Greene as fun campy stuff for history nerds and nothing deeper. Buyer BEWARE. Quote Source: Telegraph.co.uk October 29, 2022 “Why Robert Green isn’t who you think” – in reference to a person following his so-called rules and strategies “Anybody who did would be a horrible ugly person to be around.” Link: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/authorinterviews/9695967/Why-Robert-Greene- isnt-who-you-think.html Further sources are the three books mentioned in my show. I purchased them and read them through many years ago.

Books you SHOULD buy: SELF-HELP

Frank and Soren sit down and discuss “The Nest” an 80s horror trope romp in the awful ways of pulp back then. At the end, Soren lets us in some questions been bubbling around in people’s heads about his podcast.  Shoot Frank an email, let him know what you thought: asorrowfullife@gmail.com Soren Narnia has been a guest on Reader’s Labyrinth now 5 times! He has his very own playlist now: Go check it out!  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY-uJEaOQVkhTTPrsJer3pQks6qhzybHo

Did you know Reader’s Labyrinth is available on Spotify AND Apple Podcasts? Yup, well, it is!  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/readers-labyrinth/id1591620250 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4HMYvyGjhSX75LueeYMhuB

Questions Submitted by Listeners of “Knifepoint Horror” for Soren Narnia.  Questions Submitted by Mandey Brown

No TIME STAMPS this time kids. Got to stick around till the end!*  1. Is “cleanse” really about serial killers? 2. Was the protagonist in “digs” caught in a time warp? Or maybe just the apartment complex? 3. Was pretty much everyone in “drop-ins” dead? 4. Do YOU think Winthrop did it? 5. Were the prophetic marbles in “family” based on anything in particular? Or did you just make that up? 6. Why are there so many laundromats everywhere? Did something happen to you in a laundromat? Sleep, cleanse, etc 7. I’m assuming you’ve played the Thousand Steps game from “Tears of Sisyphus.” Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever ended up because of it? 8. Is there any plan to reprint some of your books that are out of print? I know you offer PDFs of some, but HYPOTHETICALLY what about those of us who have a dedicated shelf full of physical Soren Narnia books that we’ve highlighted and dogeared and written notes in to death and we want to fill in all the holes? HYPOTHETICALLY Other Questions:

  1. What are you afraid of? Not existentially, I mean, are you scared of bugs, lightning, poorly cooked shellfish?
  2. Also, what movies have scared you the most?
  3. How do you come up with your stories? It would be interesting to hear how your process goes, from how the initial idea sparks to how you further develop it into a story. Concrete examples would be great.
  4. Do you have an opinion on the perception that your stories have become less scary over time? Is this a deliberate choice or a natural, less conscious evolution as a writer? How much do you prioritize keeping the “horror” in “Knifepoint Horror?”
  5. Do you like the idea of film adaptations of the stories? I know there are a few film versions and that the stories are open licensed so the filmmakers don’t have to acquire rights from you, but have you ever been approached about participating in a [feature length] film adaptation of any of the stories or even an anthology type series of several of them?
  6. Do you prefer to voiceover your own work or the work of others?
  7. Do you do anything different when narrating your own work as opposed to when you narrate someone else’s writing?
  8. Are there any stories from Knifepoint and Snowy Nights that you had trouble choosing where to place? 17 What is your favorite dinosaur? No, I’m not trying to be cute. 18 What advice would you give to people wanting to write in a similar style to you and what techniques helped you develop your work best?

“The Superhumanities” is a fascinating read whereby Dr. Kripal’s central thesis is that often super events, paranormal, altered states of consciousness, and Divine Revelation are the hidden drivers in the stream of history’s social movements, and break throughs in science and mathematics.

From “The Superhumanities” cover page, “In Kripal’s telling, the history of the humanities is filled with precognitive dreams, evolving superhumans, and doubled selves. The basic idea of the superhuman, for Kripal, is at the core of who and what the human species has tried to become over millennia and around the planet.” (Chicago University Press, 2022)

Frank was honored to have writer, creator, journalists, and overall deeply interesting human, Brian Penny, to step into Reader’s Labyrinth for a chat.

Brian’s experiences as a professional, full-time writer has seen his life take many twists and turns. From turning whistle blower against corrupt insurance practices in 2008-09, to citizen/activist journalism, to technical/medical & ghost writing, and everything in between.

Life hasn’t been easy, and through it all Brian’s one “True North” is his desire to write. From living in a van for 3 years, to working the “gig” writer economy, Brian offers his fascinating insights into a seldom talked about corner of the craft, and the brutal grind that drives many weaker souls away.

As a host, Frank was both intrigued and humbled by Brian’s tales of overcoming challenges and hardships to always stick with what he loves most: the art of crafting words and affecting a positive change in the world.

You can find his work in the links below. Brian is also published in Cracked, High Times, Phoenix New Times, Paste Magazine, Forbes, Fast Company, HuffPost, The Street, and others. He is a professional ghost writer as well.

In case you are (blessedly) not on social media, or aren’t tracking the #writingcommunity on Twitter, it seem as though a controversy has been brewing these past 72 hours (as of May 28, 2023.

Author, M.V. Prindle entered his novel “Bob the Wizard” entered the cover art into the recent SPFBO book art competition. Speculation soon arose, however, as to whether the art was the work of A.I. generated imagery. The ensuing confusion resulted in a “witch-hunt” whereby indie authors took to the publicly available archives of Midjourney to discover the truth. The truth, as with everything in life thus far: The alleged “artist” who designed Pringle’s cover is nowhere to be found, and all we can be certain of, is that a lie was told somewhere along the way.

I sat down with author, Andrew Gillsmith, to discuss the ensuing controversy. For the record we both are NOT against the integration of A.I. into the workflow process of authors. If you want to use A.I. for writing a novel that’s totally up to you. We ARE however, in favor of open disclosure as far as the techs usage in this field. We discuss the Twitter dustup and how authors and readers should move forward into the future.

In this episode of Reader's Labyrinth Frank sits down for a FOURTH time with author/narrator/creator of horror fiction, Soren Narnia. Soren relays to Frank a few books he just knows he "needs" to get around to reading one of the these days. Frank & Soren discuss the lows and highs of life, and how things conspire to keep us from reading :) A snippet from Frank's review of Soren's work: "With over 400 detailed and positive reviews on Apple Podcasts, Soren’s “Knifepoint” stands in a league all its own amongst the increasingly crowded field of horror fiction. Edgy, gritty, lifelike, and gripping Soren’s stories subvert listener’s expectations, and his unique voice narration carries us all across haunted lands stalked by preternatural terror.”

Join Frank as he chats with Eileen Stephenson, historian and author of the Byzantine Empire. Eileen is the author of the “Imperial Passions” series, also a non-fiction work on the history of the empire during the 11thCentury, and a compilation of stories based on the intricate politics of Constantinople, and Anatolia during the time of the Crusades.

Eileen’s readers will discover stories of Machiavellian plots, cloak and dagger politics, and a story arch driven by her first-rate research, as much as by compelling characters. Eileen also allows her readers a glimpse into the hidden role of women at the center of power, like her protagonist Anna Dalassena, in her novel “Imperial Passions the Porta Aurea.”

Frank and Eileen discuss the role of primary research, the tradition of literary historical fiction, and where her passion for the past originated. They also discuss Eileen’s travels across the Eastern Mediterranean, the once cradle of the long past civilization she is so passionate about.

Watch on Reader's Labyrinth YouTube Channel: B. L. Blankenship: Western Horror, SplatterPunk, Gore as Art, History, Religion EPISODE 1 - YouTube

Please welcome B. L. Blankenship. Prolific author in the sub-genres of “Western Horror” and “SplatterPunk.” “Historical Fiction” doesn’t quit do Blankenship’s work justice, as he pulls us along to far flung places lost to memory like in his book God Walks the Dark Hills Books I&II: The story of an African-born freeman who eventually ends up joining the Confederacy.

What little of his work I’ve been lucky enough to sample, has proven beyond a doubt, that Blankenship’s stories are a solid fortress of a kind of dread nihilism not unlike the unapproachable anxiety felt in movies like John Carpenters, The Thing. Please join us as we discuss the art of writing, history, horror, and share some general thoughts on the world.

Synopsis: This story is a slight departure in the overall tone and pacing of ‘I Can’t Sleep Horror.’ Originally self-published on Amazon Kindle (Steps of the Black Dog), I went back and forth if I ever wanted to put this one out there (as on Amazon I made zero effort to market this whatsoever. almost hoping it’d just disappear along with the strange disquiet I experienced upon writing it) :/

A brutish tale of a man tormented by a severe mental illness, Bernhard finds respite through his strange relationship with a phantom-like force of sheer supernatural terror, Steiner. The two men, working in law enforcement, form a partnership forged in the fires of Bernhard’s anguish as they close in on their own inescapable and weird destines.

Death is a strange man. There is no hiding from such a man.

Sasquatch Mountain

Synopsis: What would you do if you saw a Bigfoot? If it were me, I’d keep quiet and never say anything. Homo Sapiens have a nasty habit of shucking statistical anomalies aside and painting “Outcast” or “Crazy" upon those who dare question. But Devon Lang didn’t care.

He saw what he saw and never changed his story.

..and nobody believed him. They believed him less when he said he could prove it. All he had to do was go into the wilds and collect the evidence he just knew was out there and get it into the hands of YouTube documentarian Bob Gymlan. Only in that tiny corner of the Internet could he be free.

My name is Kevin Sharp and I’m the last man to of seen Devon alive and this is his story.
