In light of Claudine gay, Harvard, college tuition, and men not going to college at all - its time to learn how to self educate.

Self education isn’t just about what you know, it’s not about facts. It’s about training yourself to think through complex situations, training yourself to discern potential outcomes, to pass on wisdom, and, maybe most importantly, to not fall for LIES.

The lies we are all capable of falling for is almost embarrassing. But not all lies are obvious, especially in an age where everyone with a voice or platform labels information as disinformation.

Another way to think about self education: the goal is not to become infallible. The goal is the ability to think, to seek what is true and humbly follow what is true. Chasing infallibility is rooted in pride and it’ll cause you to become critical, to despise authority, to ridicule, to become sarcastic. None of that is a gift to others. A learned man can be a gift to others or a know it all.

So here are some principles I’ve learned over the years. And they have been learned from being an annoying know it all.

Rules for Election Years

If you thought 2020 was wild - well, this will probably be wilder.

  1. Assume you are not getting the full truth
  2. Be watchful for the abuse of words and language - “a woman’s right to choose”; protect democracy (we must do all we can to protect democracy, even if it means killing it”;
  3. Everything will be twisted to blame the other party
  4. One podcast a week is probably sufficient
  5. Watch the full speech by the candidate - don’t merely watch clips.
  6. Expect chaos, expect protests, expect tragedy
  7. Pray

Welcome to the Institute of Men Podcast where we are figuring out what kind of men we want to be and pursuing that vision relentlessly for the rest of our lives. We derive wisdom from what is ancient, traditional, and from the greatest men in history. My name is Keaton Tucker, I want to thank you for listening.

Today, we are talking Corrupt authority and what we SHOULD NOT DO, and we talk a bit about advent.

If you are new to the podcast or you just haven’t hit that subscribe button, go ahead and do that now and if you would be so kind as to leave a 5-star review - and if you want to get into heaven, leave a comment. It is guaranteed entrance into heaven if you leave a comment on your favorite listening app. Thank you for listening and supporting the institute of men.

All authority is ordained by God. That means when someone becomes an authority, God has approved of it. He gives authority to men.

Bad authority doesn’t give you permission to revolt or rebel (unless it’s sinful, but even then resistance is silent)

Everyone who despises authority tends to desire authority. Rebels always claim infallibility. All rebels always claim, “if only I were in charge then everything would be good.”

Rebels, stir up false hope. They rally people to their cause they create division. They get everybody thinking on the same page, but they have no authority to make any change happen. It’s false hope. Division causes anger, resentment, bitterness of soul separation between close friends immunity strife. These are works of the flesh see Galatians five.

False hope is fragile. It seems like it’s under constant threat your enemy quickly becomes your neighbor or the person on Twitter. They are a threat to your false hope.

Every rebel who hears this only hears me saying, “be passive and allow things to happen”. Rebels always equate respect for authority as passivity because they can’t imagine doing good themselves where they are. They can only stir up anger and strife, it’s the only way they get recognized.

Paul never spoke evil against the authorities that God put in place, even the ones who were against him and his ministry.

The best way to learn to pray is by using other people’s words. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, he gave them words to repeat. This is the first way we learn how to pray. In these podcasts, I will read a psalm and then pray the Psalm using my own words so you can learn to pray.

Every man should learn to pray. I hope this helps and blesses you.

On this Episode we talk about Athanasius, the Arian Heresy, the Nicene Creed, and how one man's fervency may have saved Christianity. The Arian heresy denied that Jesus was co-eternal with the Father; that he was a created being. This split the church, caused violence, confusion, division. Athanasius was a Bishop who fought for the doctrine of the trinity and reunified the Church through his efforts. He is a man worthy of imitation.

One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. Proverbs 13:7

One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

We talk about money a lot on this podcast because if you mess up money in your twenties and especially in your 30’s, you’re gonna have really hard time later in life.

Money is your first line of responsibility as you become an adult, begin to pay for stuff, and to earn your own income. A lot of people in their 20’s blow everything they make because when you’re young, you make stupid choices.

I was one of those guys. I made stupid choices. I swear, God did not allow me to make more money than 30k until I learned some hard lessons. I’m partly kidding, and partly convinced that is true.

I used to pretend to be rich by eating out all the time. I used to pretend to be rich by buying nice gifts I couldn’t afford. Believe it or not, I used to have a great wardrobe. I had no money in my account but I was keeping H&M in business.

We could talk about this proverb today as pretend you are poor, live under a budget, live on less than you make, and you will get wealth - I think that is one thing this proverb is conveying.

But I also think this proverb is speaking to an attitude that is prevalent in the human heart: the deceitfulness of riches.

Those who appear rich are placing their trust in their image - they are anxious about what they should wear, eager to look like Solomon.

Other hoard all they have, placing their future security in the abundance. They have built bigger barns and said to their soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” Luke 12:19

It is the spirit of Scrooge.

Now before I go through this any further, you socialist leaning people who think I am saying the government should come in a redistribute wealth - nope. That is called stealing and its against the 7th commandment and against the 9th and 10th commandment (depending on how you count them) to not covet what your neighbor has.

No, what I am talking about is the human proclivity to serve mammon rather than God, no matter how much or how little we have in our savings account.

There are plenty of people who are wealthy and yet live so cheap they crowd out other areas of their life. They are hoarding their money, falling for the deceitfulness of riches as THE means of security and as the only thing that matters.

So what do we do? How do we draw the line, how do we avoid being legalistic?

Serve God.

You cannot serve God and money so the answer to all money conflicts is to serve God. That means you pray, and you live as you are led. Serve God. Contribute to what he is doing on the earth as you have means. It means pay your taxes and your debts.

I want to be a man prudent in my speech. I want my words to be truthful, precise, direct, and easy to understand. I do not want my words to be vague, deceitful, or filled with lies. I do not want my foolish words to trap me.

Words easily become a snare.

I fall into a snare because I do not want to disappoint or let down, or anger people in my life.

I make caveats and try to explain away what I believe so as not to be “offensive”. But I know what I am doing. I am being a coward. Cowardice and prudence are different. Often I prefer peace more than righteousness. Peace before righteousness is unrighteous peace. It is a falsity, a temporary form of peace that is a trap.

I lie, I deceive, I am intentionally vague because I want to control the outcome of my life and my relationships. To tell the truth is to surrender the outcome of whatever happens. If I tell the truth, I cannot control how other people respond.

To tell the truth, I must choose between fear or trust which might be the hardest decision in the world to make.

Thank you for reading and listening to the Institute of Men. Please consider sharing this podcast with any man who is looking for grow.

Around 40% of all undergraduate students end up dropping out of college, and almost 60% of men drop out of college.

The enrollment rate for men in higher education plummeted over the last few years, dropping down 70% for men. Men are looking at the cost, the job opportunities, the general outlook of what is available and saying, nah, I’d rather do something else.

Today, I look at reasons to go, reasons to stay, and reasons to stop your college education.

“I bet you dread praying. Dread is probably a strong word but if you’re like me a few years ago, you know you should pray but you don’t do it. Or you try it, get about 1 minute into praying, and are done. You have probably heard your pastor or priest talk about prayer, you may have even purchased a few books on prayer. Or you’ve listened to several sermons on prayer that had you hyped up to pray and to see God move in your life but then after about 4 minutes, or two days, it all fell flat.

Guidelines for Prayer

  1. Short prayers are good prayers.
  2. The Our Father is literally 16 seconds if you are taking your time.
  3. Psalm 23 is about 32 seconds

  4. Don’t try to use your own words.

  5. Pray the Psalms
  6. Pray the Our Father from Jesus
  7. Pray the confession of faith in the Apostles creed
  8. Pray the prayers of the saints - I have two favorites from the Saints - Holy Spirit and I arise today by Saint Patrick.

  9. Pray more often, not for longer periods of time.

  10. Hop in your car, pray for safety
  11. Say “god bless you” often
  12. Say “Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me”
  13. What if you had a single prayer memorize that you said at the top of each hour?
  14. You don’t need to spend one hour in utterances in the morning - that might be what Jesus means by vain repetition, not repeating the same prayer over and over.

I am bored in my faith

I hear all the time: there has got to be more than just this.

There has got to be more than attending Church or my local parish and serving.

Here are Some Questions for you to ponder:

What do you think the Christian faith is?

If you were to describe the faith, as best as you could, what would you say? And if you said it, would you believe it was worth centering your life around? The depth of the mystery of the Christian faith, when explored, is the best thing to center your life around.

Do you understand the faith?

Do you understand the story? The doctrine, the differences in doctrine, the symbols (I know that modern protestant churches have gotten rid of the symbols and artwork of the Church. Some don’t even have a cross anywhere!) Do you understand the anticipation of the church in the old testament and its fulfillment in the new? DO you know the covenants?

Do you know the heritage of the faith? The history?

There is a gold mine of history about the church. Is your faith too individual? Listen to what it says about the Church?

The pillar and buttress of the truth.

A body

A visible society with Jesus as the head

A family

A temple

The Bride of Christ - which means the Church is one with Christ (think about that) the same is true with a body.

Why are you here? And what is the purpose of this life?

Maybe you don’t have an appreciation of the mystery of life because you haven’t pondered the deep questions. You did not choose to be alive but here you are, alive, with dreams and ambitions, questions and problems. Then your life will be over before you know it.

  1. I think each of us should spend time in personal prayer with God, becoming acquainted with him (which means you should learn how to pray!) Read the scripture and let it be confusing. Ask lots of questions, read again, learn to pray! I have a book on prayer that gives an overview of 21 different types of prayer - I think I understand 2 of them.

  2. And I think you should become obsessed with the Christian faith. I myself am obsessed with he faith, the theology, the history, the scripture, the the saints and heroes -

It is true in every possible meaning: seek and you will find. I you want to find, you have to seek.

Come to believe that the Kingdom of God is like a treasure hidden in a field worth selling all you have to buy that field.

What’d you turn to when life got hard? Which vice gave you temporary relief but also brought a hangover? We all turn to something to bring temporary relief but do they in turn give us strength? Usually not. It is far better to turn to the One who gives grace. Pain, suffering, struggle probably won’t subside but you won’t be trying to endure it with a hangover either.

“True greatness can only be reckoned in terms of charity; the really great man is one who doesn’t think much of himself, and doesn’t think much of rank or precedence either. The only clear-sighted man is one who treats all earthly achievements as dirt, because he wants to win Christ; the only educated man is one who has learned to abandon his own will and do God’s will instead.”

I have never met a man who did not have at least one thing in his life that was slowly killing him and keeping him form becoming the man he wanted to be, from moving forward in his life, and from doing something noble or meaningful. It could be alcohol, weed, porn, slothfulness, fear, a demeaning relationship, something. More often than not, when I talk to guys its either alcohol, porn, or weed, or some combination that is killing them.

We know we should stop.

But how often do we really stop? How often do we stop doing the thing we know we should not be doing? Rarely. Especially if its with alcohol, weed, or porn, things that are highly addictive to men. If you are unable to stop those and if you allow them to continually steal from your life, one day, it’ll cost you everything. You are going to have to be ruthlessly honest with yourself.

You will have to acknowledge that your bad habit, your secret, your addiction, your bad relationship, whatever it is, you will have to acknowledge that it is killing you. When we are ruthlessly honest, we have to think through everything that could or will happen in the future, bring it into the present, and confront it. We no longer say, “this is bad I should stop”, we say, “This is killing me and my future and if I don’t face all the possible consequences, it will continue to steal, kill, and destroy me.”

You might need to scare yourself in order to change.

The worst thing you can do to yourself and to your future is continue to lie to yourself.

“I need to take action, but I can’t. I am stuck, I keep trying stuff and nothing happens.”

“My timeline doesn’t allow me to make a the decision I need to make so I am just waiting. I hate just waiting - I need to do something. My family needs me to do something, my soul feels like it is going to burst if I don’t make something happen.”

When all you’re doing is waiting, you start to feel antsy. You feel as if you aren’t doing the things men are supposed to do which is take action and to make something happen in your life - we believe that here, we teach that and push you to take action.

But we cannot confuse taking right action, with controlling every aspect of our lives. Sometimes it doesn’t matter the action we take. We cannot control the outcomes. Sometimes we are just stuck, waiting, wondering what is going on. Doing the things we need to do but without anything happening. We’re just stuck.

How do we get unstuck?

What is manhood? What does it mean to be a man? Is it being macho? Is it being an outdoorsman? I think those are just personality traits and interests. My working definition of manhood is: manhood is responsibility. The more responsibility you take on, the more of a man you become. This is especially true of the men who take on the responsibility of family.

What keeps men from taking on responsibility and how do we grow in this area? I answer those questions on today’s episode.

Many men ask me questions about their relationships. The most frequent question I get is “how to know if she is the one.” That is a good question to ask but first, you should be asking:

Should she get a second date? Or a third date?

Before you get to the place of wanting to propose, you should make sure there are some character traits that are upright and good.

What is an indicator that should should get a second date?

The answer I give is “how does she talk about her friends and her co-workers?”

  • Does she see the good or does she have something to say about how they could be better?

  • Does she say “I love her but…”

  • Does it seem like she is always in a fight or drawn to drama?

  • Is she always agitated with someone?

Chances are she is a gossip or a quarrelsome woman (those two tend to go together) and you are in for trouble because how she talks about them is how she will talk about you when you are not around.

Bible Verses:

For lack of wood a fire goes out and where there is no whisperer quarreling ceases. As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is the quarrelsome person for kindling strife. Proverbs 26:20

A Continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike. To restrain her is to restrain the wind of grasp oil in one’s right hand. Proverbs 27:15

Better to live in the corner of a house than with a quarrelsome wife. Proverbs 21:9

It is better to live in a desert with a quarrelsome and fretful women. Proverbs 21:19

As recently as two days ago I was ready to settle, to coast, to no longer endure the painful toil that is life for those who want to become something.

Maybe that is you.

You have an idea of you to be. You want to be a man of valor, a man of good courage, strong and daring, fearless. You want to lead your family, take responsibility, take part in work that matters, fighting a good fight, making a difference in someone’s life, maybe even greater than just one. You want to be a man of character, a man of good presence, someone people like to have around, a man your wife and others can admire and look up to as an exemplar and a leader.

You want your life to be more than video games, a few beers and fantasy football. You’ve PR’d your bench press, your squat – I’m here for it, get as strong as you can – but you’re also wondering if your spiritual strength will ever measure up to the strength of your body – of maybe you’re wondering if you’re not much of a man because you aren’t strong at all, but you have a good heart which others call soft.

Maybe you think of yourself as nothing more than a mechanic, a barista, a trainer, a creative, on your fourth job this year hoping you don’t have to go back to chik-fil-a or clearing carpets at the movie theater; the question “what do you do for work” has become the question you dread because the answer immediately causes people to think less of you. Or at least you think it does.

If someone asked you to pray you wouldn’t know what to say and its embarrassing for you. You dread if people ask you for advice because you don’t know if what you’d say is helpful but secretly you wish someone would ask you at least one question to prove to you that someone cares about what you have to say.

Maybe you are filled with shame for past mistakes that no one can know about so you hide it from the public, but it is on repeat in your mind day by day. Maybe your shame is linked to the surmounting debt you find yourself in – how did I get so much?

You think to yourself “I will never be as smart or as successful as… fill in the blank with the person you see daily who looks like they have it all together.

You tell yourself, “I am just a shadow of a man – It’s nice Keaton that your father asked you what kind of man you wanted to be and was present for all your games and dinner. But my dad left when I was 9 years old so I had to fend for myself and teach myself. Yeah, I want life to be more than it currently is and I want to became the man I know I could be, the man I envision I could be but here I am, on my couch again for tonight’s round of Netflix and chill by myself. I’ll crack another beer, pour another drink, open another bag of chips, and let my life be what it is. Sure I am angry about it but don’t let them see your anger – that might be labeled toxic. I don’t want to be called toxic. It’s better that I sink into this couch, a stone of a man or sloth of a man depending on the day. Who needs men anyway.

I wouldn’t even know how to be a man if I tried.

I have tried and gave a good effort. I followed the advice of this podcast, I went to church but it didn’t connect. What are those songs y’all sing? I tried the books, the podcasts the workouts. But I think I will accept my life as it is.

Such is the story of many, many, men every single day. If any of that resonated with you, you are in good company. I’ve been there and everything I listed I have heard from at least one man at one time. What you struggle with or think of yourself is common to all men. And that is because those feelings you keep so close to your chest and ignore linked to something in your way – you look like a man but internally don’t feel like the man you know you could be.

What is described above is also not new – the conditions above, you could say are men who feel distressed, bitter in soul, and indebted. And there is a way out.

Thank you for reading Institute of Men. This post is public so feel free to share it.

Popular psychology is here to improve your individual well-being and one way to improve your individual well being is to put boundaries up with "toxic" people. Was Jesus for boundaries? Did he respond differently? As a man who wants to be like him, I should learn from him how he deals with difficult and toxic people. And I should start by looking in the mirror.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Jesus managed to stay on assignment, on his mission, but he never let his mission rule over him and interrupt who he was sent to save.

One thing that sticks out to me about Jesus is he was never, ever, not once,… in a hurry. He gets interrupted so many times you’d think it would be a nuisance but in the stories told about him it almost seems like he fully expected to be interrupted. All the time. He’d be interrupted, fully present, do his Jesus thing, and then get back to what he was doing before he was interrupted without skipping a beat.

How do I discover what I am supposed to do? This is the question we answer today.

Your first assignment is to become the best possible man you can become.

Make this your top priority, more than anything else. Become the best possible man you can become. Get some moral knowledge, get some courage, stretch your fearlessness; get strong in mind, body and spirit; serve others, figure out what your believe. Every man has this assignment from God; no one is exempt; it is the assignment you know you have all the time.

“The problems differ from generation to generation, but the qualities needed to solve them remain unchanged from world’s end to world’s end; it takes strong and daring men or moral courage. Most of all, I believe whatever value my service may have been comes even more from what I am than from what I do.” Theodore Roosevelt

What could you do if you used 2 extra hours a day for creating, producing, learning? Of 12 extra hours per week?

624 hours per year.

Over a 5 year period, that is 130 extra days. Not 8 hour days, 24 hour days.

Jesus was a man who had a full schedule and made the most of his time.

Hear me – I am not advocating or suggesting you work 80 hours a week at your job. Not at all, I don’t believe that is a good use of time.

What I am advocating though is that you get rid of all the dilly dally things in your life that keep your distracted and ineffective. Right now, most of my listeners, you are responsible for only you which means you don’t have that much responsibility. But one day you will. One day you will be married; you will have kids; you will have a higher promotion.

One day you will be responsible for more than yourself and if you dilly dally your time away now instead of preparing you will carry those bad habits into your future. Right now you can work 32 hours a week, eat poorly, and play video games till late at night.

Is that what you want to bring into your future?

Is that the kind of man you want to be?

Is that the legacy you want to leave?

Your twenties are your defining decade according to Dr. Meg Jay (she wrote a book about it). How you spend your twenties sets the stage for the rest of your life. It is time to use that time well. Now is the time to practice and prepare for that future responsibility by owning and investing your time wisely, not dilly dallying in things that do not profit.

What kind of man do you want to be?

I believe if you can answer that question, if you can figure out what kind of man you want to be in your character, everything else will go well for you. If you’re an overcomer in your character, instead of someone who lets obstacles get in the way, life is gonna go well for you. The same is true if you’re responsible, strong, daring, courageous, and all the other manly virtues, if you have those things in your character, life is going to be better for you. And then you can figure out what you’re going to give your life to, which is your mission and your purpose. Character will sustain your mission and your purpose.

Over the next 20 years neo-Marxism will continue to demolish enlightenment liberalism (established post WWII) till all that remains is Neo-Marxism and Christianity. Since one of the core tenants of Marxism is dissolution of the family AND Christianity, the best things churches in the west can do is build strong families with strong generational ties up to grandparents. Over the next 5-10 years The churches who can give a compelling theological vision of the FAMILY will be the churches people seek.

For the men: Fatherhood, Husband, and Manhood. For the Women: Motherhood, Wife, and womanhood.

Deconstruction of Christianity is rooted in enlightenment liberalism fused with critical theory. “I am free and autonomous, therefore I can interpret how I choose” (enlightenment liberalism)and “we must pull apart all that has not promoted freedom and autonomy”(critical theory). Both of these pathways lead to neo-marxism in the form of racial and sexual identity.

What should you do with your life if you are single? How should you grow? In this episode, we talk about how to spend your time and what to do with your life while you are single that will set you up for a great marriage.

  1. Die to yourself daily. In marriage you find out how selfish you are, throw in a child and you really find out how selfish you are. Selfish people ruin marriages, dying to yourself is the cure.

a. Do something inconvenient to you. Do something against your preferences. Do something you don’t want to do. It’s good for you.

b. There are few things that irritate me more than a man who cannot be inconvenienced for the sake of others. The gravitational pull of his selfishness is so strong that if he is asked to do something or expected to do something that is outside his preferences, he throws a fit. It drives me nuts. Good luck with that attitude man, in all of life, but especially being married. You’re gonna have a hard time and your wife will come to resent you.

c. You will find out how much you need to die to yourself when you get married so you might as well practice now, it’ll be much easier.

  1. Go help build your local church however you can. I think every single man should serve in youth or kids for at least 4 years.

  2. Figure out what kind of man you want to be and pursue that relentlessly.

  3. Memorize and live out Proverbs 24.

a. Verse 27 – get some direction in your life. Find a career you can stick to for several years, work really hard, grow, doubt, and endure. Then build your house (get married, have a family). This also has to do with money: make sure you have the income to support your house.

b. Verse 28-29 – practice non retaliating and telling the truth. If you retaliate when you are single, you will when you are married and its not gonna go well for you.

  1. Rid your life of laziness. Take on as much responsibility as you can.

a. Proverbs 24:30-34

  1. Learn how to handle money/get out of debt/self-control with money.

  2. Enjoy it.

Bonus:

Read great books. Don’t read self help nonsense. It’s got the nutritional value of cotton candy for your soul and character. I know plenty of people who have become wealthy by following steps in self-help books, but I have yet to meet anyone interesting, with something to say, with deep character, who read self-help books. Read good books, old books.

Learn to write. That way you learn how to think, and it’ll force you to put into words what you believe. It sounds clear in your mind till you put it on paper and then not so much. Till you practice

Learn to speak. Precision in your words and the ability to speak on any occasion is a skill you will need for the rest of your life. Being able to speak is the great skill every man should master. Easiest way to begin to learn to speak is reading out loud.

Every single Sunday I get a reminder on my phone that says, “you need a moral vision to be effective, you need to know what you believe and why, what you don’t believe and why. The men who know what they believe and why will shape the future of this country and their family for generations. And you must be able to live out and communicate what you believe.”

“Fear God and Take your Own part” is a book written by Teddy Roosevelt during the outbreak of WWI. The opening chapter of this book is an appeal to the nation to pursue righteousness, which means virtue and moral uprightness, to not shirk responsibility and to avoid the ignoble ease and laziness that plagues so many of us. It also means to seek the good of your neighbor. That is important. The biblical word for righteousness is dikaiosynē which means “how one ought to be, approved by God and man, integrity, purity of life, virtue, correctness of thinking (that one is huge right now), correctness of feeling and acting. The pursuit of righteousness is the highest calling because with the pursuit of righteousness comes everything else. Strength comes, peace comes, love, justice, order, liberty. Paul says to Timothy in one of his letters to “flee evil desires and to pursue righteousness.” It appears over 500 times in the old testament, over 200 times in the new testament if my sources are correct, making it one of the most revered pursuits and topics of the bible.

Manhood is responsibility is my working definition of manhood. In this episode, I dive into what I mean by that and the different degrees of responsibility men can grow in in order to become the men they desire to be.

Quotes from Episode

Take responsibility away from a man and he will begin the endless search for pleasure and comfort to his own demise and the demise of those around him.

“I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and it’s stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber and want like an armed man.” Proverbs 24:30-34

"I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph". Teddy Roosevelt

Justice among the nations of mankind and the uplifting of humanity can only be brought about by those strong and daring men who with wisdom love peace but who love righteousness more than peace. Undoubtedly collective power is essential to this end but no exercise of collective power will ever avail if the average man does not keep his sense of personal duty, initiative, and responsibility. There is need to develop all the virtues that have the state of their sphere of action, but these virtues are as dust if the tender virtues of a family life based on the love of the one man for the one woman and on their joyous and fearless acceptance of common obligation to the children they have born. There must be the keenest sense of duty and with it must go the joy of living. There must be shame at the thought of shirking the hard work of the world, and at the same time delight in the many-sided beauty of life.

In this episode, I sit down with my dad (Pops) and have a conversation about his story and the man he wanted to become. I am heavily influenced by my father who is the greatest ordinary man I have ever met and I say "ordinary" on purpose. He never held a position of power, he won't be remembered in the history book or asked to speak at a large event. But he changed the course of his family history by staying faithful to his wife of 38 years and raising three outstanding boys (well, at least two, the jury is still out on me). With a 33 year gap between me and my Father, he has lots to offer all men who desire to grow into great men. He is in character the man I want to be and he has a great perspective to offer all of us, young and old, on how to become a great man.

This is the first of many episodes with my dad and I hope you enjoy the wisdom he offers to all of us pursuing noble manhood.

A quote from Theodore Roosevelt and what this podcast is all about.

It seems to me that, for the nation as for the individual, what is most important is to insist on the vital need of combining certain sets of qualities, which separately are common enough, and, alas, useless enough. Practical efficiency is common, and loft idealism not uncommon; it is the combination which is necessary and the combination is rare. Love of peace is common among weak, short-sighted, timid, lazy persons; and on the other hand courage is found among many men of evil temper and bad character. Neither quality shall by itself avail.

With soul of flame and temper of steel we must act as our coolest judgement bids us. We must exercise the largest charity towards the wrongdoer that is compatible with relentless war against the wrongdoing. We must be just to others, generous to others, and yet we must realize that it is a shameful and a wicked thing not to withstand oppression with high heart and ready hand. With gentleness and tenderness must go dauntless bravery and grim acceptance of labor and hardship and peril. “All for each and each for all” is a good motto if each works with might and mane to so maintain himself as not to be a burden to others. We of the great modern democracies must strive unceasingly to make our several countries, lands in which a poor man who works hard, can live comfortably and honestly and in which a rich man cannot live dishonestly nor in slothful avoidance of duty. And yet we must judge rich man and poor man alike by a standard which rests on conduct and not on caste. And we must frown with the same stern severity on the mean and vicious envy which hates and would plunder a man because he is well off and on the brutal and selfish arrogance which looks down on and exploits the man whom life has gone hard. -Theodore Roosevelt, 1913

This quote from the opening of Theodore Roosevelts Autobiography captures what this podcast is all about. We are, right now, in a national crisis of all sorts. But to my mind, the one most prevalent to me, is a crisis of manhood. Should men of valor come to the forefront we could find ourselves in a different position, but it seems to me we are too acquainted with the comforts of life to effectively handle what is before us. It is my belief that we can change that. This country cannot afford to have its sons less than men; but neither can it afford to have them other than good men. If courage and strength and intellect are unaccompanied by the moral purpose, the moral sense, they become merely forms of expression for unscrupulous force and unscrupulous cunning.

This podcast is about becoming men who keep our sense of personal duty, initiative and responsibility, at home and in the world. My name is Keaton Tucker and this is the man I want to be podcast.
