Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! Hey kids and parents, welcome into your Tuesday, the 12th day of October. Today is National SAVINGS Day! And what a great day to start a SAVINGS account, if you don’t already have one. Sometimes, it’s hard to even think about saving money, but we have no problem saving other things! Some people save...baseballs. Some people save...stamps. Others save action figures, dolls, books, video games...all kinds of stuff! I know, we call that “Collecting,” but it’s the same thing isn’t it? So, if saving MONEY is hard to wrap your head around, just call it Collecting Money!! And what a great time to start, here on National Savings Day!! And one more quick point about that before we move on. An easy way to do that is anytime you have a dollar, set back 20 cents before you spend that dollar. Just pretend you DON’T HAVE that 20 cents. If you have 5 dollars, set back a dollar. Put it in a special place (a bank, if you can) and NEVER touch it. When you have enough, INVEST it, and let IT make more money FOR you. Talk to an investment professional and get some more good advice about that!! And, yes, even KIDS can start saving and investing money!! Your future self will thank you immensely!!
The Beginning of a HERO: The Warren Buffet Story It was August 30, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska that Mr. and Mrs. Buffet had their second child and named him Warren. Even as a very young child, Warren had a great interest in working to earn money. He would go door-to-door selling chewing gum, Coca-Cola, and weekly magazines. He was only ten years old when he visited the New York Stock exchange. The next year, he began investing his money. By the time he graduated from high school, he had accumulated many thousands of dollars! Over time, Warren Buffett would continue to work, invest his money, and buy stock in many, many companies. In 2008, he became the richest man in the world, owning very large parts of dozens of well-known companies, including Coca-Cola and American Express. But, now that he has earned SO MUCH MONEY, what does he do with it? He GIVES it away—to HELP all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. In fact, he has pledged to give away 99-percent of ALL his money! In 2006, he gave over 30-Billion-Dollars to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a very well known charitable organization. Warren Buffett—now there’s a great example of a young child working hard to earn money then learning how to invest his money and grow his money and finally USE his hard work and the money he earned to HELP others. Warren Buffett—a great example of how to become a HERO!
So, even a child, Warren Buffett was busy working to earn money. What kind of work have you done to earn money? And, what do you do with your money after you earn it? (Hint: Saving part of it is a... Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! Well, it’s a Friday morning, and it’s the 22nd day of October. So, do you know what today is? It’s National NUT Day!! And I’m SO excited! It looks like I finally got my OWN National Day of Recognition!! What? What? NO... so your saying it’s not THAT kind of nut? Oh, you’re saying it’s the kind you eat? Here, give me that... Okay, it says here, “Nuts are a highly prized food and energy source and some are a primary source of nutrients for both humans and wildlife. Many nuts are excellent sources of vitamins E and B2. They are also rich in protein, fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium.” Hmmm. So, Happy National Nut Day to you! Even though it isn’t about me...
Well, the upcoming story doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with nuts, but it is another story involving MY favorite teacher, Mr. Delaney. Mr. Delaney always talked a LOT with his class about becoming HEROES by HELPING others, you know, instead of hurting others. And in this story, he talks about the IMPORTANCE of HELPING. So, here we go! The story is called The End of the Year Discussion, and it starts right now.
The End of the Year Discussion Toward the end of every school year, after all the testing is done, Mr. Delaney likes having discussions with his class. And of course, one of his favorite subjects is that of HELPING others instead of hurting them. “Why should we all be HELPERS,” he asked his class. One girl said, “It makes the world a better place.” Another student said, “It makes life easier for someone having a hard time.” Someone else said, “It makes everybody friendlier.” But there was a new kid in the class who had just moved from another city. He spent a lot of his time picking on other kids. He said, “Life is not always JUST about HELPING, you know.” “Really” said Mr. Delaney, “Then what is it all about?” The boy thought—for longer than just a moment and finally said proudly, “It’s about having fun!” Mr. Delaney started to comment, but then a boy named Bryan, raised his hand. “I think I can handle this one,” he said, and Mr. Delaney nodded. Bryan said, “But just as soon as the fun is gone, all you have left is the memory of having fun, and if your fun was causing someone else to be hurt, what good does that do? When you HELP other people, though, then the person HELPING creates a good memory and provides a good memory for the person being HELPED. It really is all about HELPING.” Then Mr. Delaney added, “And you can certainly have fun while you’re HELPING, too, making a good memory for everyone.” The boy hadn’t really thought about it like that before, but he was beginning to see that choosing to HELP others was a lot better than choosing to hurt them. He was pretty much deciding right then... Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! Wednesday, October 6 Hey kids, it's Wednesday, the 6th day of October. It's National Mad Hatter Day. It’s apparently a day to just let your silly side shine! Yep. And I guess with or without a hat...either way seems okay here! It all comes from the character called the Hatter (also known as The Mad Hatter) from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Written by Lewis Carroll in 1864, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865. And by the way, the phrase “mad as a hatter” comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries when haberdasheries used mercury nitrate in the process of turning fur from small animals into felt for making hats. The exposure to this metal over time caused the these people to develop symptoms making people believe they were mad. So, now you know that! And Happy National Mad Hatter Day to you! Well, if today, happens to be your birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you! Someone else who was born on this day is a man named George Westinghouse, Jr. He was a pioneer in business and industry AND an inventor of some really cool things that have greatly helped America and the world. Oh, and by the way, as I was doing a little research about him, I saw dozens and dozens of pictures of him...and out of dozens and dozens of pictures of him, NOT ONE had him wearing a hat...you know, for whatever that’s worth. But, George Westinghouse, just like everybody else, started out as a child who at first knew NOTHING. But as he grew, just like you are doing, just like I did, just like all of us, he studied...he learned...and through hard work and goal setting, he contributed GREATLY to making life easier for nearly everybody. And, of course, we have a Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero story about him. It’s called The George Westinghouse Story, and it starts right now. Play: The George Westinghouse story. Drums out... And there you go! Another perfect example of what is known as The American Dream! George Westinghouse had a talent for figuring out and even inventing machinery to do specific jobs. But, you know, that really didn’t make him special. What DID make him special is that EVEN AS A CHILD, he began to recognize that talent in himself, and he worked on that talent and developed that talent to the point that his TALENT began to serve him, and it began to serve those around him, and eventually it served the whole world. Now, YOUR talent may not be in machinery, or business, or industry, but I can assure you that you DO have a special talent, or perhaps a group of talents that...IF you discover them, and work hard on developing them, they will take you FAR as well. Just some things to think about on this Wednesday morning. Well, just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. Comin’ up shortly on this Wednesday edition of TCN Mornings. But right now, let’s talk about how we... Support this podcast

So, if you’re a cat lover and you and your family are considering adopting a cat, National Black Cat Day asks that you consider adopting a BLACK cat. And speaking of CATS, our story this morning is actually about a cat! But not just ANY cat... it’s about Jenny’s Cat. No, that’s the title of the story... Jenny’s Cat. And it starts right now. The Beginning of a Hero - Jenny’s Cat So, the two boys thought they were going to have some fun. What they didn’t consider was that it wouldn’t be fun for everybody. They learned it wouldn’t have been fun for Jenny. (Yeah, they learned that for sure!) And it wouldn’t have been fun for Jenny’s Cat either! They just didn’t thoroughly think through the situation before they acted. Also, did you notice that when Jenny’s mom talked to them, she was very plain about the fact that they causing harm by being hurtful and offered them a much better way of HELPING instead of hurting? But she did it with kindness and sincerity. She could have just really blasted them for their actions and attitudes, but she knew that would only create a bad relationship in the future. Jenny’s mom was a pretty smart lady, wouldn’t you say? Well, just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 226 - Transcript for Wednesday, September 15, 2021 Good morning EVERYBODY! It’s WEDNESDAY...and it’s the 15th day of September. Today, is National Backpack Awareness Day. Yeah! National School Backpack Awareness Day is observed every year on September 15. It strives to make sure students wear backpacks safely, because improper use can lead to back pain or injury, which can impact learning. You know, because learning is a lot more difficult with a pain in the back, right. And then there’s the injury part of this equation. SO, all this talk about back packs got me thinking. And, I might get a little sociological on you here. National backpack awareness day started in 2001. Why? What changed in or around 2001 that required to be aware of the pains and injuries backpacks can cause? That’s what I was wondering. And SEVERAL factors came to mind. One, going back 40 and 50 years before that, we didn’t even USE backpacks to carry school stuff. We used backpacks for camping and stuff like that. We had lockers at school to put our stuff in, because back then, because people had more respect for each other and didn’t steal other people’s stuff (well not nearly as much, anyway) and kids didn’t put dangerous stuff in their lockers. PLUS.... kids were a LOT more active then. Everything they did exercised their whole bodies which in turn created strong backs...not just strong thumbs! But anyway, I digress here. So, happy national school backpack day to you! And speaking of back packs, here’s a story that deals with that very subject! Well, it’s about a kid who couldn’t FIND his backpack when he needed it! It’s called Where’s Juan’s Backpack, and it starts right now. The Beginning of a Hero: Where’s Juan’s Backpack So, what is something special you have brought to school? How would you feel if it had disappeared, and no one could find it? And, has something like this ever happened to you or to one of your friends? Did you think it was funny, or did you feel bad about it? And finally, how do you think the whole aforementioned scenario could have been avoided? Just some thinking points on this Wednesday morning... Okay...Still to come: Another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... The Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. So, DON’T go away! But right now, let’s talk about how we might provide these stories for YOUR school! Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 244 - Monday, October 11, 2021 Hey kids, welcome into your Monday, the 11th day of October. Today, of course it Columbus Day. It’s a national holiday—all banks and government offices are closed today, along with other businesses, too, and some schools. Columbus Day is always on the second Monday in October every year in the United States. And observance of Columbus Day signifies the day Columbus arrived in the Americas on October 12, 1492. For a long time, Christopher Columbus was given credit for actually discovering North America. However, long before Columbus was born, Leif Erikson landed on here. Christopher Columbus WAS and explorer, though, and he did sail across the Atlantic, more than once. In fact, he made four voyages across the Atlantic. But on his first voyage, he was looking for Asia. He and his crew landed their three ships somewhere near the modern-day Bahamas. While he may not have discovered an already populated continent, he did create an interest in exploring and colonizing North America. By the way, it was in 1937, that Columbus Day became a federal holiday in the United States. And it was in 1971 that it came to be observed on the second MONDAY in October instead of actually on October 12th. Okay! Well let’s get going with today’s Monday edition or TCN Mornings. It wasn’t on Columbus Day, and it wasn’t even on a Monday, but on a Saturday that the story coming up happened. It’s called The Burger Battle, and it starts right now. The Burger Battle Story Jamie and his dad were standing in line waiting for the lady at the register to take their order. It was something they had always done—a father and son day one Saturday a month, rain or shine. The man in front of them had just ordered two grilled chicken sandwiches and two orders of fries. When the lady repeated back the order, the man became angry, and said, “ONE order of fries, ONE order of fries, don’t you listen?!” And then he said some other things that brought tears to her eyes. “Dad, that man said two orders of fries, I heard him,” said Jamie. “I know, I heard him, too.” “But, Dad, he’s treating her horribly!” “OH yeah,” said his dad. “Yes he is.” Well, it was now their turn to order lunch, and Jamie’s dad, being as friendly as he possibly could, placed the order. And then he said to the lady, “I would like to apologize for that man who was just here, since he doesn’t seem to be willing to apologize for himself.” The lady smiled through the tears that were still in her eyes, and thanked him. “Look,” he said, “I have a couple of free passes to the movie theater—maybe you can use one and invite a friend to go along.” The lady’s tears came back a little, and then she said quietly, “Thanks, you’re very kind.” Jamie knew that he and his dad had planned to use those movie passes that evening, but you know what? He didn’t mind at all. What he had seen that... Support this podcast

Jim Henson, the creator of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Big Bird, Oscar, Bert and Ernie, and so many more. His story is called The Jim Henson Story, and it starts right now. Oh wait! If today also happens to be YOUR birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you, too! Okay, NOW it can start! The Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero: The Jim Henson Story So, you heard that Jim had a very happy childhood. How would you describe a happy childhood? Do you enjoy making things, you know, like Jim did when he was a child? If so, what kinds of things do you like to make? Also, you heard that not only did Jim Henson practice excellence in everything he did, he was a genuinely nice person! His business partner for many years, Frank Oz said that Jim Henson was as close to how you’re suppose to behave toward other people as anyone he’s ever known. What do you think he meant by that? And finally, would you like for people to be able to truthfully say that about you? Just some things to think about on this Friday morning. Alrighty then. Coming up, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future...right here on this Friday edition of TCN Mornings. A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 246 - Transcript for Wednesday, October 13, 2021 Good morning kids and parents! It’s WEDNESDAY...the 13th day of October. So, we’re exactly half-way through the week. And ALMOST halfway through the month. Today is National Stop Bullying Day! So, since we talk about and promote being a HERO on this program, THAT, in fact, is just OPPOSITE of being a bully! How’s that, you say? Well, HEROES do what? They HELP others. And bullies do what? They HURT others. And, hurting is the opposite of HELPING, so therefore, a bully is the OPPOSITE of a HERO. I say we should work our hardest to FULFILL National Stop Bullying Day. What say YOU about that? Okay, so here’s a story that actually deals with a bullying incident involving 3 boys, and how a neighborhood GIRL took care of the situation! The story is called, “Nicholas and the Three Tormenters,” and it starts right now... Nicholas and the Three Tormenters Nicholas always knew he could be a better student, so at the beginning of this school year he decided he would start doing his best at everything. His class had a history project due on Friday, and he had been working on it for over three weeks now. When Friday came, his was the best one in the class! On the way home that day, a boy from his class and two boys from another class called him over to talk with him. They started making fun of him. That’s when the boy from his class grabbed Nicholas’ backpack and began taking things out of it. He started throwing the things in different directions as hard as he could. The other boys just laughed. Across the street from where all this was taking place was another classmate, Rachel, who had just gotten home and saw the whole thing from her living room window. That’s when she quickly but calmly went outside and just stood there looking at the boys. “How much of your lives are you going to waste by being losers,” she asked? “Losers!? We’re not losers,” said one of the boys! “Then name one thing” she said, “just one, that doesn’t spell loser.” You know what, they couldn’t. They couldn’t think of an answer at all! “Okay, so why don’t start thinking of ways to HELP other people instead of hurting them,” she said, as she HELPED Nicholas pick up his things. The three boys quickly and quietly went somewhere else, and at least one of them really gave some thought to what Rachel had said. It took a lot of courage, but the next day, he saw Rachel at school and said, “Thanks.” He told her that what had she said made a lot of sense. Just like Nicholas had decided at the beginning of the school year to start doing his best in school, the other boy decided that day to start doing his best to become a HERO!
So, if you had seen this situation, what would YOU have done. If you were Nicholas, how would you feel? Also, do you think the boy who had a change of heart and decided to start HELPING others... Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 236 - Wednesday, September 29, 2021 Good morning kids and parents! It’s a WEDNESDAY...the 29th day of September. And you know what today is? Today is National Attend Your Grandchild's Birthday Day. REALLY?! National Attend Your Grandchild's Birthday Day? Well, that’s great, but what if your grandchild doesn’t HAVE a birthday on September 29th? I have a DOZEN grandkids, and NONE of them has a birthday on September 29! Wait...I do have ONE whose birthday is on September 30th, so thanks for THAT reminder! But that’s not September 29th... Oh well, happy National Attend Your Grandchild's Birthday Day to you anyway! And if YOU are somebody’s grandchild (and come to think of it, YOU ARE) and if YOUR birthday is today, September 29th, then HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! You share your birthday with somebody else...who by the way was somebody’s grandchild...but as far as I can tell, she never had children, so therefore, SHE never had grandchildren. Her name was Caroline Yale, and during her lifetime, she made a HUGE contribution to humanity...and more specifically to people who were HEARING IMPAIRED. Her story is called the Caroline Yale Story, and it starts right now. The Caroline Yale Story So, you heard in the story that Caroline had a strong desire to help children learn. What kinds of things are YOU motivated to do to help others? Also, Caroline worked hard in pursuit of finding a way to help children who could not hear very well or at all. Are YOU prepared to work hard to accomplish something that makes a positive difference in your own life and in the lives of others? And, finally, with Caroline, it all began with education...learning all that she could to build the foundation she would need to accomplish all that she did. How important is education to you? How important SHOULD it be? Just some things to think about on this Wednesday morning. Well, just ahead, it’s another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. It’s all just ahead on this Wednesday edition of TCN Mornings. But right now, let’s talk about how we might provide these stories for YOUR school! You know, over the past 22 years, these stories have been played during morning announcements in hundreds of schools around the country. Each story is about 2-minutes in length, and they are typically played twice a week. A story from the Beginning of a Hero series on Tuesdays and a story from The Beginning of a Famous Hero Series on Thursdays. So, if you think YOUR school would like to participate, just have your Principal or Counselor write to jim.lord@TCNmornings.com. Or go to TCNmornings.com and click Membership. WELL, Let’s jump right in and visit the memory of My Old Irish Pappy, a man just FULL of wisdom about life and how to live it better. Yeah, don’t mess with other people’s stuff! A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 237 - Thursday, September 30, 2021 Hey everybody! It’s a THURSDAY...the 30th and LAST day of September. National... are you ready for this? National Chewing Gum Day!! Yeah, National Chewing Gum Day! And, you know, I was curious about this chewing gum day thing, so I did some research about it. And some of the things I learned is that humans have apparently used chewing gum for over 5,000 years. One source says they may have chewed it for enjoyment, to stave off hunger, or to freshen their breath much like we do today. In fact, I learned SEVERAL things about chewing gum. But one thing I DID NOT learn is WHY September 30th was chosen for National Chewing Gum Day. Nowhere could I find and answer to that question. Different sources of information about chewing gum said they were still researching the ORIGIN of National Chewing Gum Day...on September 30! I even asked: WHY September 30th chosen to celebrate Chewing Gum? And the answer pretty much across the board was...Uh...I don’t know. Well, could it be....Could it POSSIBLY be that September 30th is the day on which William Wrigley was born??! You know, William Wrigley, the founder of Wrigley’s Chewing Gum? So, that means today would have been his birthday! Is that just a coincidence? Or COULD it be that THAT is the reason September 30th is National Chewing Gum Day? Anyway, if today also happens to be YOUR birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU, too. And we actually have a beginning of a Famous Hero Story ABOUT William Wrigley! It’s called the William Wrigley Story, and it starts right now. The William Wrigley Story. Well, you noticed that as soon as William was old enough, he became very interested in helping out in his father’s business. His father was a soap maker, and even as a child and a young man, William would help his father by finding new customers to sell soap to. Is there something YOU could do to help your parents in a way that could make life better for them and for others? Also, you heard that William Wrigley often said, “Even in a little thing like a stick of gum, QUALITY is important.” How important is quality to you in the things you do? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Thursday morning. Well... Just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future, all still in front of us here on this Thursday Edition of TCN Mornings. Right now, though, I wanted to talk about my book. It's called Mr. Delaney's Mirror. It's about a student in Mr. Delaney's class who gets a glimpse of her own personal FUTURE Self, and the life she will be having when she's like 30-years old! Her name was Bay Chandler, and her future according to the mirror was NOT a happy one. The rest of the book follows Bay through middle school, high school, and college. It shows step-by-step what she did to take her from the person she was in... Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 238 - Friday, October 1, 2021 And yes it is! FRIDAY that is!! We’re looking at day number 1 in the month of October... AND.... Today is National Less Than Perfect Day. National Less Than Perfect Day?! What does that even mean? Well, it says here... it’s a day to accept that it's okay to not be perfect. Some people are perfectionists that are very hard on themselves if they make a mistake, and some people are okay with their faults. It goes on to say that no matter where you fall on that spectrum, today is a day to remember that we all make mistakes and that we should try hard at everything we do, but not so hard as to stress ourselves out. This comes from a site, by the way called Checkiday.com. It suggests ways to observe this day...it says to spend the day trying to keep yourself from stressing out about things you aren't perfect at. It might be a day to challenge yourself to try new and difficult things, because at the same time you will be focusing on not caring if you can't do them with perfection. Well, okay then! Happy National Less Than Perfect Day to you! Moving on, it was a Less Than Perfect Day for a kid named Jamie in the upcoming story. Actually, he wasn’t being hard on himself, but his friend was certainly giving him a difficult time. Until the DAD in the story stepped up and explained things! The story is called He Was Told He Couldn’t Sing, and it starts right now! He Was Told He Couldn’t Sing So, did someone ever accuse you of being bad at something you thought you did well? How did THAT make you feel? And, be honest, now! Did you ever tell someone he or she wasn’t doing something well? How do you think it made him or her feel? Also, what might have happened if Kyle’s father had not taken HIS friend so seriously back in the day? And finally, how do you think Kyle’s dad’s story affected Kyle and also Kyle’s friend, Jamie? What do you think they learned from it? What did YOU learn from it? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Friday morning. Alright then. Coming up, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future...right here on this Friday edition of TCN Mornings. Well, as I’ve mentioned many times before, I hope you have someone in YOUR life like My Old Irish Pappy. Well, anyway, it was ALMOST a perfect segue, and I think it’s a pretty good story, too. It’s called I Can’t Go, and it starts right now. I Can’t Go. So, have you ever had to turn friends down because your parents wouldn’t let you go somewhere with them? How did that make you feel? Also, why do you think Anna’s parents didn’t want her to go to some of these places? And finally, why do you think the girl called the cookies “HERO cookies?” Just some things to think about on this Monday morning. TCN Mornings Episode 234 - Monday, September 27, 2021 Hey kids, welcome into your Monday, the 27th day of September, and today is National Chocolate Milk Day! Yep, National Chocolate Milk Day!! You may not believe this, but apparently, chocolate milk is a magical and even sacred drink! The earliest known use of chocolate was by the Olmec civilization. The Olmec were the first major civilization in what is now Mexico. These people are said to have been drinking chocolate milk over 3500 YEARS ago. And it seems that drinking chocolate milk was not only something they enjoyed, but it was also considered a status symbol for them! Later, the Myans were known to drink chocolate milk. And chocolate drinks were thought to have powers of medicine! Yeah, I’m not kidding! Eventually, chocolate and chocolate milk made its way to Europe during the 1600s, and still it was thought to not only be a tasty treat, but also have healing powers! And all this to say, that chocolate and chocolate milk that we enjoy and take pretty much for granted, has an amazingly interesting history! So, happy chocolate milk day to you! AND, now, the upcoming story in fact DOES include chocolate milk, but unfortunately NOT necessarily in a good way! It’s called Lisa’s Long Day, and it starts right now! Lisa’s Long Day So, what might be something that has happened to you that started your day off all wrong? How did Lisa’s mother describe someone who has a hurtful attitude? What other choice does a hurtful person have? Have YOU ever been hurtful to someone else, and if so, what other CHOICES do YOU have for attitude and behavior? I mean, why are there TWO of them. Well, apparently NATIONAL Miniature Golf Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in May, in the United States. (Oh, so this is like WORLD Miniature Golf Day. Okay.) Moving on... Miniature golf can be traced back to the 1800s. It looks like it was originally created in Victorian Scotland to allow women to play golf because, at the time, it was considered unladylike for women to raise a golf club above their shoulder! Well, THAT makes sense....NO IT DOESN’T!! — It goes on to say this basically meant that regular golf was not an option for women. So, NOW, miniature golf is played worldwide by women, men, and children. People are so silly...Miniature golf was created because women were not allowed to play regular golf! Now, don’t get me wrong, I LIKE miniature golf. But...well ‘nough of that... Coming up is a story about 4 girls...4 FRIENDS who were not planning a miniature golf outing, but a bowling outing, and then it happened. The story is called My Daddy’s Job, and it starts right now. The Beginning of a Hero: My Daddy’s Job So, what does your mom or dad do for a job? What kind of job are you thinking you would like to have in YOUR future? And, how did the girl’s mother HELP the girls realize the importance of all jobs? And finally, how do you think the girls felt after she explained everyone needs everyone else? A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 231 - Transcript for Monday, September 22, 2021 Good morning EVERYBODY! It’s WEDNESDAY...and it’s the 22nd day of September. And today is officially the FIRST DAY OF FALL! It is also Dear Diary Day! Yeah! Dear Diary Day. If you already keep a diary, then you already know the benefits of doing so. But if you don’t, you may want to start. Keeping a diary (or some people prefer a ‘Journal,’) is a great way to record your thoughts by writing down things that bother you (while those things are bothering you) and explore ways to not let those things continue to bother you. Also, you can write down ideas, and write down how from day to day you can develop those ideas. You can write down goals, and write down from day to day how you are working to achieve those goals. And don’t just write down these things...go back often and read what you wrote. Over time, it really CAN help you develop into a stronger and more efficient person! Well, if today happens to be YOUR birthday, HAPPY Birthday to you! It would also be the birthday of a very special lady in AVIATION history. I don’t know if SHE kept a diary or a journal, but if I had to bet on it, I’d bet that she DID! Her name was Ellen Church, and her story, which I think is just fascinating, is called The Ellen Church Story! And it starts right now! The Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero: The Ellen Church Story So, have you ever flown on a large airplane? And, you heard that Ellen had great perseverance (or stick-to-it-iveness.) How is YOUR stick-to-it-iveness? Do you set out to do something and stay with it until it’s done? Or do you give up somewhere along the way? And finally, have you given much thought about what you want to do when you grow up, or even MORE important, what kind of PERSON you want to be? A person of integrity? A person who gets good things done? A person who is honest in your dealings? What kind of PERSON do you want to be? Oh and one more thing: Do YOU have any new ideas that maybe no one else has thought of...ideas that could somehow help some part of the world be a better place? Just some things to think about on this Wednesday morning. Okay...Still to come: Another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... The Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. So, DON’T go away! But right now, let’s talk about how we might provide these stories for YOUR school! You know, over the past 21 years, these stories have been played during morning announcements in hundreds of schools around the country. Each story is about 2-minutes in length, and they are typically played twice a week. A story from the Beginning of a Hero series on Tuesdays and a story from The Beginning of a Famous Hero Series on Thursdays. If you think YOUR school would like to participate, just have your Principal or Counselor write to jim.lord@TCNmornings.com. Or go to TCNmornings.com and click Membership. WELL, Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 254 - Transcript for Monday, October 25, 2021 Hey kids, welcome into your Monday, the 25th day of October. Today is World Pizza Makers Day! Yes it is! Today is the day we celebrate the people who make pizzas! Now, you know a lot of us just throw frozen pizzas into the oven when we feel hungry, but real pizza makers toss dough by hand and make their own sauces by choosing the right balance of spices and herbs. Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world! And it takes a certain, shall we say, expertise to make a really good pizza. You know making pizza has been a profession for hundreds of years, but only in Naples, which is now a part of Italy. Before 1861, it was its own kingdom. And pizza it didn’t even become popular in Italy until the 1940s. But it was in 1905 when the first pizzeria was opened the United States by people FROM Naples. Yeah, the first pizzeria in the United States was Lombardi's, which was started in New York City in 1905. Lombardi's is still in business today, and although it is in a new location, the original oven is still in use. Then came other cities like St. Louis, and Chicago, and Boston, each developing their own styles for pizza. Today, pizza is, like, EVERYWHERE! So, happy World Pizza Makers Day to you!! Alright, let’s see what we have for you on this Monday morning? A BIRTHDAY! Yes we do! And, of course, if today is YOUR birthday, well, happy birthday to you! You may like to know that you share the day with a man...who started out as an adventurous kid (as you’ll soon hear). He became a pilot and he was a great explorer! Now, I don’t know is whether he was a big fan of Pizza...remember, pizza wasn’t as widely available in his time as it is now. But his name was Admiral Richard Byrd. His story is called The Admiral Richard Byrd Story and it starts right now. The Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero: Admiral Richard Byrd Story: Did you hear that?! He traveled BY HIMSELF to the Philippine Islands when he was 11-Years-OLD!!! Now, okay, I’m not suggesting that’s such a great idea in today’s world, but still, let’s learn a lesson from the life of this young man here. He had a passion to accomplish something really worthwhile when he was still a kid! He didn’t waist his time spending hours and hours playing video games. Okay...I know there WERE no video games when he was a kid, but still he didn’t spend his time goofing off in mindless activities. He had a passion, and he thought through HOW to do what he wanted to do things, and he put together a plan. When it was time to ask permission, he didn’t beg or whine or threaten, he presented his plan logically and intelligently. But the most important part is that he VISUALIZED himself in the future. He KNEW what his future self would be like and what his future self would be doing, and he set goals and made solid plans to be certain it happened the way he... Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 255 - Transcript for Tuesday, October 26, 2021 Hey kids! Hey parents! Welcome into your Tuesday, the 26th day of October. Today is National Pumpkin Day! So, didn’t we celebrate just a few days ago National Pumpkin CHEESECAKE Day?? Yeah, I thought so. What day was that? Oh, okay...last Thursday, the 20th. What? Oh...yeah, I know, it was also Get Smart About Credit Day, so we talked about that, but I WAS aware it was also National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day. And now it’s National Pumpkin Day and ... well, I don’t know, it just seems to me that National Pumpkin Day should come BEFORE Pumpkin Cheesecake Day. It’s like, which came first...the pumpkin or the pumpkin cheesecake?! It says here that MANY people (including us) use pumpkins as fall decorations, and of course as jack-o-lanterns on Halloween. But also a LOT of people make great desserts with fresh pumpkins. So, have YOU ever used a pumpkin for cooking purposes? We HAVE! And based on experience, my advice is to go buy pumpkin already in the can! It takes a REAL chef to make a dessert from scratch using a fresh pumpkin! But, on the other hand, there are a lot of people who really can do that successfully. Well, speaking of pumpkins, it just so happens that we have a Beginning of a Hero story about just that! Pumpkins. And more specifically a pumpkin carving contest! It’s called A Jack O’ Lantern and a Hero, and it starts right now. The Beginning of a Hero: A Jack O’ Lantern and a Hero So, have you even known someone like Carter’s friend there? Someone who thought only about themselves? Someone who was willing to do just about anything including hurting others to get what he or she wanted? Have YOU ever had that kind of attitude? Also, think about the girl in the story. In years to come, what will she remember about the incident? She didn’t seem to be the type to hold grudges, so she probably would have just moved on, eventually forgetting about the boy who ruined her pumpkin, and if she ever did think about him, it would just be to feel sorry for him. But, do you think she would remember Carter and what he did for her? Of course she would!! She would go on to tell her friends, and eventually her children and grandchildren! Because THAT’s the kind of impression that heroes leave on others. It’s just like the opening song says: The choice is yours...so choose with care...to help or hurt...to keep or share. You’ll find the world’s not always fair, but kindness is the answer everywhere. Just some things to think about on this Tuesday morning. Well straight ahead: Another quote from My old Irish Pappy, the Question of the day, AND, a Reflection of YOUR Future. It’s all coming up right here on this Tuesday edition of TCN Mornings. So, my Old Irish Pappy. A man just full of wisdom about life and how to live it better. Always make your word as good as gold! When you agree to do Support this podcast

TCN Mornings Episode 225 - Transcript for Tuesday, September 14, 2021 Hey kids! Hey parents! It's Tuesday, the 14th day of September. AND...... It is National QUIET Day. So, shhhhhhh. Okay, it’s not REALLY National Quiet Day HERE, TODAY... It was National Quiet Day here last Wednesday when we were talking about Weiner Schnitzels! BUT, we’ve got another shot at National Quiet Day, because today is Quiet Day in ENGLAND. SO... we’ll take that and run with it! You know, from the time the alarm clock sounds in the morning until we go back to bed 16 or so hours later, our days are just filled with NOISE! The blender in the kitchen, the vacuum cleaner, the television, traffic, school bells, kids yelling on the school ground...you name it, it’s noisy! But today is a day to stop and realize how relaxing QUIET can be. And a quiet time each day can not only help our nerves, it can be good for our health and well being, too! So, find a time to take a few deep breaths, and relax, and just be quiet for a while, not just today, but EVERY day! You know, one place you can do that... is in a library! Yeah...you gotta be quiet there! And while it may not be actually about being quiet, today’s beginning of a hero story is actually ABOUT a LIBRARY. It’s called It Happened in the Library, and it starts right now! The Beginning of a Hero: It Happened in the Library So, what is something you really love to do but some of your friends don’t? Have they teased you about it? And, what about you? Have you teased someone for something they love to do? Also, have you read a good book lately? What are some benefits of reading a lot? So, let’s start with a visit to the memory of My Old Irish Pappy, and as always, there's not a day that goes by when I don't remember something my Pappy taught me. Yes, don’t ever be too proud to ask advice about important decisions you got to make. All through your life, you need to remember that! And don’t EVER base a decision on just how you’re feeling about it at the time. That’s a foolish game. Be wise and ask advice FROM somebody wise.... Support this podcast

TCN Mornings Episode 224 - Transcript for Monday, September 13, 2021 Hey kids, welcome into your Monday, the 13th day of September. Today is National Peanut Day! Yeah, National Peanut Day! And what better way to celebrate National Peanut Day than to get yourself a fist full of roasted peanuts and enjoy them as a snack. Or put them in your favorite dessert! Well, looking ahead to what story I could bring you today, Jimmy Carter comes to mind, because he grew up on a peanut farm... And then there’s George Washington Carver who figured out how to make over 300 different foods out of peanuts... but contrary to popular belief, PEANUT BUTTER was not one of his inventions. No, The invention of peanut butter is credited to a Canadian man named Marcellus Gilmore Edson, a Canadian chemist and pharmacist got the patent on it in 1884. SO....moving on... We’ve gone from National Peanut Day to talking about peanut butter...and while we’re wandering, what does peanut butter go best with? CHOCOLATE.... and THAT.... is the segue we’re looking for this morning, because today would be the birthday of none other than the Chocolate King himself, Milton Hershey! And, of course, as always, if today is your birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, too! But, coming up is a story about Milton Hershey (Yes, I know we’ve run this story before, but hey, it’s his birthday.) The story is called The Milton Hershey Story, and it starts right now! The Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero: The Milton Hershey Story. So, would you like to have a job learning to make candy? Why or why not? Also, when Milton Hershey tried to start his own candy factory, he failed over and over again. Why do you think he didn’t just give up? And finally, Milton Hershey worked HARD all of his life, didn’t he? But he USED his hard work to HELP others! In his case, he created jobs for a LOT of people, and he created an amazing school. But the point is that he WORKED HARD, then he USED the results of his hard work to HELP others? So, what about YOU? Is that something YOU would consider doing day after day, week after week, and year after year. Work hard, and use the results of your hard work to also help others? TCN Mornings - Monday, October 4, 2021 Hey kids and parents, welcome into your Monday, the 4th day of October. And today is Kanelbullens dag. Say WHAT? Kanelbullens Dag. Now, if you are Swedish, you KNOW what I just said...although I probably didn’t pronounce it correctly. Kanelbullens Dag means Cinnamon Bun Day in the Swedish language, which is what is spoken in Sweden. Apparently it is celebrated on October 4th (actually, it’s the FIRST Monday in October) because the Home Baking Council (whoever that is) did not want the day to compete with other food traditions. So, there ya are! Happy Cinnamon Bun Day to you! Well........ Coming up is a story that’s actually ABOUT a cinnamon bun...or cinnamon roll. Okay, it’s not ABOUT a cinnamon roll, but it does MENTION a cinnamon roll! It’s called Come to a Complete Stop, Then Proceed. And it starts right now. Play Come to a Complete Stop, Then Proceed: So, have YOU ever seen a situation kind of like the one in the story there? How did the people involved react toward each other. Have you ever accidently injured someone else or nearly injured them? How did they react? How did you respond to their reaction? And finally, have YOU ever lost your temper toward someone else who accidently got in YOUR space? How SHOULD you have reacted instead? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Monday morning. A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 228 - Transcript for Friday, September 17, 2021 Well, good morning, kids and parents! We’re looking at day number 17 in the month of September... And... September 17 is designated as Constitution Day, which is also known as Citizenship Day. It commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. The US Constitution is, of course, kind of like a rule book for the government to follow in governing the people. It recognizes the certain and many rights that people have, and it ensures that those rights are respected by the government. And then there’s the flag, of course, that represents the rights of the people...the FREEDOM of the people that the Constitution ensures. In fact, here’s a story about the flag...and the Constitution at Bradford Valley School. It’s called Raising the flag at Bradford Valley School, and it starts right now. The Beginning of a Hero: Raising the Flag at Bradford Valley School So, as you know, unless you are born in America, and automatically became a US Citizen, you have to go through a pretty rigorous process of learning our Constitution, our laws, and the meaning of freedom. Over the years and decades and centuries, millions and millions of people have immigrated here from other places in the world, and have willingly gone through this process to become citizens. WHY do you think they would do this? How much do you know about the differences between living in America and living in countries that so many people are wanting to be a part of? Do you KNOW what our Constitution says, and exactly what the flag of the United States of America really stands for? And finally, how THANKFUL are you to have The Constitution of the United States of America, and to be a part of what many call the greatest nation on earth? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Friday morning. Alright then. Coming up, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future...right here on this Friday edition of TCN Mornings. Well, as I’ve mentioned many times before, I'm hope you have someone in YOUR life like My Old Irish Pappy. Someone who is FULL of wisdom, who can TEACH you on a regular basis about life and how to live it better. But before we have TODAY’S visit with me old Pappy, this IS Friday, so, let’s review what he taught us Monday through Thursday... Here we go! MONDAY Nobody’s perfect! That’s why pencils have erasers. TUESDAY Don’t ever be too proud to ask advice about important decisions you got to make. All through your life, you need to remember that! And don’t EVER base a decision on just how you’re feeling about it at the time. That’s a foolish game. Be wise and ask advice FROM somebody wise. Now, you KNOW, and if you don’t know, you will in just a second...that EVERY DAY is a National Day for SEVERAL somethings, but THIS day, September 20, 2021 is the FIRST Day for National Care for Kids DAY. It was started by the Designetics Foundation for the purpose or raising awareness and encourage each of us to make a positive difference in a child’s life...whether by being a positive role model, donating to your favorite children’s charity, volunteer with a children’s service organization, or helping with supplies or other needs that such an organization may require. Nicholas and the Three Tormentors: Well, as you heard, this story started out with Nicholas admitting to himself that he could be a better student. Are you the best student you could possibly be? And, instead of waiting until the last minute, Nicholas started on his project three weeks before it was due. Then, he had the best one in the class. Do you think it was good to start so early? Why? A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 250 - Transcript for Tuesday, October 19, 2021 Hey kids, welcome into your Tuesday, the 19th day of October, AND this is episode number 250 for TCN Mornings, so how about that?! Today is also National Kentucky Day! Yeah! It seems that October 19th, is when we recognize Kentucky for becoming the 15th state in the United States. (But, actually, Kentucky became a state on June 1st, 1792...so why is October 19th the day we recognize and celebrate that? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe it’s because June 1st had already been taken for National Go Barefoot Day? Mhm, that’s a thing, and come June 1st, WE will be celebrating that!!) Anyway, Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass State, and also home to the Kentucky Derby, and Fort Knox. It’s also the birthplace of one the nation’s most beloved presidents. So, happy National Kentucky Day! Okay! Let’s get going with this Tuesday edition of TCN Mornings. So, have you ever been in a situation where somebody was just relentless in trying to make your life miserable? Well, don’t feel alone. There are indeed those people out there who seem to have nothing better to do than to torment someone else. A kid named Anthony was the recipient of his own daily torment in the story coming up. He tried to remain quiet about it, but one day, he just couldn’t. The story is called “Thumper Gets Stopped!” And it starts right now: Thumper Gets Stopped. And there it is! So, have you ever let someone hurt you repeatedly without reporting it to an adult? If you have, why? And maybe this is a good time to talking about “reporting.” You know, nobody wants to be a tattle-tale or a snitch, or whatever you want to call it. But that’s a lot different from “REPORTING.” Tattling is like when you “tell on” somebody for ... what ...chewing gum when they’re not supposed to ... or something like that. And that’s something you really never want to do. Because, well, it’s not your business, and that’s just their own character flaw that they need to deal with. BUT...when someone is causing HARM to someone else, or damaging someone’s property, TELLING an adult about it is not tattling. That’s reporting. And when any of us see this happening...including ME, it is actually our responsibility to tell someone in authority. We can do it quietly of course, and a good place to start is by telling your parents, or your teacher. A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 227 - Transcript for Thursday, September 16, 2021 Well it’s a THURSDAY MORNING! It’s the 16th day of September. And today is NATIONAL Thank You Day! It’s a day to simply remind us to actually SAY Thank You to those who are deserving of our thanks. And MANY people ARE...every day! So, it’s not just that we say thank you today. We should say thank you EVERY DAY... when some one holds a door open for us. When someone does something to help us, whether we asked them to or not. SO many times, we become complacent and just take for granted the things that others do for us. So, today is a reminder to actually SAY thank you. A quick thank-you note is always appropriate, too, and appreciated by those who receive them! So, Happy National Thank You Day today. Well, the upcoming story is about someone who is certainly deserving of thanks for all the smiles he brought to kids and adults alike, and today would be his birthday! Of course, if today is also YOUR birthday, happy birthday to you as well! So, what did this man do to bring smiles to kids and adults? Well, you’ll just have to listen! His name was HANS Rey, and his story is called the H.A. Rey story, which starts right now! The Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero: The H.A. Rey Story So, Hans was able to use a talent he had and loved doing even as a child to someday be the work he did as an adult. What do you really enjoy doing and are good at that maybe someday could serve you in your future? And how can you start working now to really develop that talent? Also, this might be a good time to remember some words My Old Irish Pappy once said... He said, You’ve GOT to do what you’ve GOT to do, so you can GET to do what you WANT to do! But, then he went on to say, But if you also learn to ENJOY doing what you’ve GOT to do WHILE you’re doing it, your life will be a lot happier! And, I think Hans Rey did a lot of GOT Tos to get to his WANT Tos. What do YOU think? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Monday morning. Well, just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. It’s all straight ahead on this Thursday edition of TCN Mornings. It shows step-by-step what she did to take her from the person she was in Mr. Delaney’s class to the FUTURE Bay she WANTED to be, instead of the one she saw in the mirror. You can order the book on Amazon.com, or anywhere books are sold online. Just Google Mr. Delaney’s Mirror. Mr. Delaney's Support this podcast

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! Good morning kids and parents! It’s a THURSDAY...the 21st day of October. And, today is National Get Smart About Credit Day. It’s a national campaign where volunteer bankers help counsel young people on responsible credit habits. We talked a few days ago about SAVING money. Well learning about credit and how to handle it responsibly is certainly an important part of money management. Now, you may be too young to have a line of credit with a bank, but you are CERTAINLY not too young to learn about how credit works and how to be responsible with it. So, happy National Get Smart About Credit Day. And along those lines of thinking, coming up is a story about a moment of honesty where money is concerned. I hope you like it. It’s called simply, “The Hundred Dollar Bill,” and it starts right now!
“Oh my goodness, look! That lady just dropped a hundred dollar bill, and she doesn’t even know it!” Dana and her two friends were at the convenience store when they saw the whole thing. One of Dana’s friends picked it up, and the other friend said, “Now we can buy anything we want!” “No,” said Dana, “it’s not right.” “What’s wrong with you,” said one of the other girls? “Do you remember when Mrs. McBride talked to us about seeing ourselves in the future, all grown up and everything?” Mrs. McBride was the school principal, and she was always talking about personal vision. “What kind of person do you want to be when you’re an adult? Do you want to be a person who is respected, who has integrity, who is responsible?” She would say that, and a lot more, too. Dana told her friends, “When I’m 30, I don’t want to look back and realize that I was a thief.” Well, the other girls didn’t really have a response for that—not anything that sounded intelligent, anyway. “Besides,” Dana said, “the lady probably worked hard for that money, and I know I would be hurt if someone took money from me, even if I thought I just lost it. So, the other two girls now had a choice. They could keep the money, they could drop it back on the floor where they found it, OR they could actually HELP the lady by returning it to her. It only took a couple of seconds for them to realize what the best choice was, and that’s what they did.
Yeah, The Hundred Dollar Bill! So...If you were with your friends who wanted to take money that someone else had dropped, would you have the courage to tell your friends to do the right thing and return it? In the story, Dana said that when she’s 30, she doesn’t want to look back and realize she was a thief. What kinds of things do you want to remember about your younger self when you are 30? And finally, what kinds of things could you be doing NOW to help ensure your reputation is a good one when you’re an adult? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Thursday... A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! TCN Mornings Episode 251 - Wednesday, October 20, 2021 Hey kids! Hey parents! It's Wednesday, the 20th day of October. AND...... It is National Youth Confidence Day! I’m quoting now from the National Day Calendar website: “Building a framework of positive role models is vital to developing responsible, confident young adults. Incidentally, National Youth Confidence Day, on October 20, encourages us to connect and inspire today’s youth for tomorrow’s success.” Wait a minute! Isn’t that what we do EVERY DAY here at TCN Mornings? Well, at any rate, welcome into National Youth Confidence Day!! AND... if today, happens to be your birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you! Someone else who was born on this day was a man named Mickey. What? NO...I said a MAN, not a mouse...Come on!! His name is Mickey Mantle, and you know when I was your age, Mickey Mantle was REALLY big stuff in baseball! He was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. His story is called The Mickey Mantle Story, and it starts right now.
So, did you notice it started when Mickey Mantle was a kid. And not just a kid, a LITTLE kid. Now, does that mean if YOU start seriously practicing baseball (or whatever sport) as a kid, YOU will become one of the GREAT athletes someday? Well, maybe. But maybe not. Some people’s natural talents ARE in sports. But for most of us, that’s not the case. HOWEVER, there IS SOMETHING that you CAN be REALLY REALLY good at. Something that, if you discover what it is and develop it, it will serve you well! So, keep your eyes and ears open. Look for what interests you and learn all you can about it. Look for those things you are good at doing. Develop your talent to the best it can possibly be. Then use that talent to help yourself, your family, AND (and this is important, too!) Use your talent to HELP others. And you, too, can become a hero! Oh, and this being YOUTH CONFIDENCE Day... there is NOTING that can instill confidence more than discovering and developing a personal talent! Something certainly worth thinking about on this Wednesday morning! Alright then...Just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. It’s comin’ up NEXT on this Wednesday edition of TCN Mornings. If you think Support this podcast

TCN Mornings Episode 232 - Transcript for Monday, September 23, 2021 Well it’s a THURSDAY MORNING! It’s the 23rd day of September. And today is NATIONAL Checkers Day!! Yeah! National Checkers Day! Well, how fun is that!? You know, the game of checkers has been around for a REALLY long time, and it... What? ...... What do you MEAN National Checkers Day is not about the game of checkers? Mhmmm. Mhmmm. National Checkers Day is about DOGS IN THE WHITEHOUSE?! Here, give me that! Mhmmm. Hang on... I’ll get to the bottom of this...just give me a second. ..... Well, okay.... CHECKERS was the name of Richard Nixon’s Dog... apparently it was a big controversy in 1952 that somebody gave him a Cocker Spaniel, and people got all upset that he had accepted a personal gift six weeks before the election where he was the Vice Presidential Candidate. Yeah, I remember hearing about this....he gave a speech defending the gift, and it became known as the CHECKERS Speech! So, National Checkers Day is about that speech, the Dog named Checkers, which apparently was named by Richard Nixon’s daughter, and it’s about ALL dogs in the Whitehouse, which seem to outnumber the number of Presidents in the Whitehouse. Well, okay then. Happy National Checkers Day to you! And maybe you can celebrate by what... I don’t know... Playing a game of checkers? Alright....birthdays. As always, if today happens to be YOUR birthday, Happy Birthday to YOU. I hope it’s a great one for you! And you may like to know that you share your special day with a man who made a BIG difference in the world of education, especially for early elementary education. And, I don’t have any idea if he was a fan of the game of checkers, or if he ever had a dog named Checkers, but HIS name was William McGuffey. His story is called The William McGuffey Story, and it starts right now! The Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero: The William McGuffey Story So, have you ever wondered about who might have written the books you study in school? What is your favorite subject to read about? And, do you ever stop and think to be thankful for the fact that you had the opportunity to learn to read? Also, did you ever consider that YOU could be the one to teach someone else to read? And finally, if you were going to write a book for school children, what would it be about? Just some thinking points as you go through this Thursday morning! A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! Good Morning! It’s a Friday, and here we are moving nicely into and through the month of October! October 8th to be exact...So...what do we have to look forward to today? Well, today just happens to be National Fluffernutter Day!! That’s right! National Fluffernutter Day!! And when I first learned it was National Fluffernutter Day, can you imagine the FIRST question that came to my mind? WHAT IS A FLUFFERNUTTER??! Now, you may KNOW! But I didn’t. So, I’m having to look it up. Fluffernutter...fluffernutter...fluffernutter... Oh, here it is! Fluffernutter. A fluffernutter is a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow creme usually served on white bread. Well, okay then! How fun is that?! National fluffernutter day! Oh, and, by-the-way, today is ALSO National Hero Day! Yeah, it really is! And, you know, hear a lot about heroes these days, and we talk a lot about HEROES here on TCN Mornings. But what exactly IS a HERO? Well, simply put, a HERO is someone who HELPS others. Sometimes in really BIG ways, and by doing so, they might become FAMOUS Heroes. But even in small ways, heroes HELP others. SO...today, we have a story about a girl named Lauren who just happens to meet a real hero. It’s called Lauren Meets a Real Hero, and it starts right now. ***Lauren Meets a Real Hero Lauren was a new student at Cayman Elementary School, and she was having a hard time making friends. One day, Lauren was the last person to get on the bus, and while there were several seats left, there were none for her. As she walked the aisle, she would ask if a seat were taken, and a girl on the seat would slide over toward the aisle, and say, “Yes, this seat is taken.” Lauren tried four more seats, all with the same results! Finally, when she was only three rows from the absolute back of the bus, a boy moved over, not toward the aisle but toward the window. He said, “Come on, you can sit here.” Lauren couldn’t believe it—a boy named Carlos—the most popular guy in the school. She said, “Thanks, but aren’t you afraid you’ll lose friends by letting me sit by you?” He said, “I like having friends as much as anybody else, but if having friends means I have to treat people like they treated you, well, I guess I can do without them!” He went on to say, “I think my sister is in the same grade as you are. Here’s her number. Why don’t you give her a call? You guys would get along great.” “Are you sure?” asked Lauren. “Absolutely!” said Carlos. “Look,” he said, “we don’t get into playing all those mind games that the air-heads do. Well, Lauren did call his sister, and eventually, they became good friends, but that particular day, Lauren saw clearly the difference between those girls who hurt her, and Carlos who was quite the HERO! That's what I know about the Beginning of THIS Hero, and I know that YOU can become a Hero TOO!

A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO! Okay, boys and girls...Moms and Dads... Good THURSDAY morning to you! It’s the 7th day of October, and it is National Frappé Day! Well, alright then. So....I know that the term Frappé can refer to just about ANY cold, slushy, fomey, sugary, creamy drink, but MOST of the time, when people order a Frappé, it starts with a coffee base, and that’s where I personally draw the line. Anybody who knows me, knows that I have 2 rules about coffee. 1.) If it’s GOOD coffee, don’t mess it up by putting stuff in it. And 2.) If it’s NOT good coffee, don’t drink it. But for those of you who DO like messed up COLD coffee, be happy! Today is National Frappé day! Well, today, I thought I would start out by bringing you a story about one of my FAVORITE teachers! Mr. Delaney. Mr. Delaney was a great teacher, and he was an even greater storyteller! At LEAST once a week, he would tell a story about.. SOMETHING but regardless of what the story was about, it seemed to always have a good point to it. After each of his stories, his students couldn’t help but feel like better people for having heard them. Coming up...a story about Mr. Delaney telling a story about his father. It’s called Mr. Delaney’s Father...And here it is! Go.
Mr. Delaney, who was just plain famous for his storytelling, often liked talking about his father, Henry Delaney. “It was my father,” said Mr. Delaney, “who first taught me about people who HELP and people who hurt.” Mr. Delaney said that when young Henry was in school, it was pretty common for boys to play tricks on girls. “Back then,” he said, “they didn’t have ball point pens and markers. They had fountain pens that had to be dipped in ink after writing every few words. So every student’s desk had a jar of black ink built into the desk.” Mr. Delaney went on to explain that when a girl was sitting in front of a boy, the boy often thought it was funny to dip the end of the girl’s hair in the ink. A lot of girls had ink stains at the ends of their long hair. The girls would be furious, and the boys would laugh even more. Not Henry, though. He could see those boys just had hurtful attitudes, somehow thinking (in a very shallow minded way) that it was funny, and he would stop them every time he could. He was nice to the girls, and they all liked him very much. They considered him to be their HERO. “In fact, when they got a little older,” said Mr. Delaney, “one of those same girls married him, and she became my mother! “‘HEROES HELP others,’ my dad would always tell me. ‘HEROES are winners,’ he would say. And then he would look at my mother and say, ‘I’m a winner!’” Yes, Mr. Delaney learned from a very early age just how much HEROES indeed are winners!
Drums out. (Laughing) You know, my wife and I have one of those old school desks with the ink well in it, just like the ones Mr. Delaney’s father had when he was in school. We’ve had that Support this podcast
