Brother Ray grew up in the rough corridors of Phoenix surrounded by addiction, violence, and instability, with parents cycling in and out of prison and a childhood marked by foster care, chaos, and survival. As a teenager he dropped out of school, started selling meth, and was pulled deeper into the streets, guns, and gang culture that eventually led to an armed robbery case and a multi‑year prison sentence.

Inside prison, Ray’s addiction escalated into heroin, his anger toward God hardened, and politics and drugs became his way of coping—but his family never stopped showing up for him, making sure he had commissary even when he used it to fuel his habit. When he was finally released, he came home determined not to go back, but alcohol, meth, and later fentanyl quickly dragged him and his wife into another cycle of violence, overdoses, probation violations, and repeated trips in and out of treatment.

In this episode of Recovery On‑Air, Ray shares how a desperate car‑ride prayer and a worship song (“Rescue Story” by Zach Williams) became a turning point that opened him back up to God and led him into church, discipleship, and genuine accountability through sponsors, men’s groups, and the Twelve Steps. He talks about the grace he found in Pure Heart Church, the Chemical Imbalance men’s group, and local recovery leaders who refused to give up on him—even when he relapsed after professing faith and had to face his own abuse of God’s grace.

In this episode of Recovery On-Air, host Christin Day sits down with therapist and trail runner Karina Chandler for a powerful, honest conversation about childhood trauma, addiction, eating disorders, and what long-term recovery can really look like. Karina shares growing up in a tiny farm town in Oregon, surviving severe childhood sexual abuse, navigating complex PTSD and dissociation, and building an identity around “helping everyone else” while silently struggling herself.
