Before he returns to the show I thought I would have a special guest on . . . my wife, Ashley! I have asked her to be on for a while and she finally said yes. We learn a little about her and the work she has been doing for her doctorate degree. This leads into a discuss on our life as foster parents, adoptive parents, and the pain and beauty of our last 9 years together. We top if off by letting our 8 year old, Charlie, get a few words in as well. This prove to be a meaningful and more sensitive discussion and we hope you enjoy!

We discuss the theories behind how these were written and the different pictures of Jesus each paints. Josh acknowledges how one of the biggest critics of scripture helped him better see Christ for who he is and discusses how it seems like the four gospels contradict each other. Welcome back T&J fam! This week we pick up where last week ended; the Bible. In order to use the Bible as a data point, we need to figure out if it can be trusted as a reliable, valid source. So, we try to do just that - explore the legitimateness of the Bible. As arm chair theologians we recognize that there is much more information our there than we can process, but we do our best to throw out what influenced our decision making. We define the "canon" and look at both internal and external variables that help us understand scripture. We then touch on ways this can be read and understood. As always, we hope you enjoy. We are back T&J fam! And y’all are in for a treat. We explain the tension we tried to create during the last show and begin identifying who Jesus and the trinity are this week. We go back to the beginning … almost. This week we look at the Arian Controversy that led to the Council of Nicea and ultimately the Nicean Creed, which we still use today (Shout out Rich Mullins and Third Day). We look at the biblical information about the Godhead and begin to paint the picture of our faith. We hope you enjoy!

These leads to a discussion on the influence of our culture and whether we were all just conditioned to believe this thing called Christianity. They discuss the progression of suicidal ideations, symptoms of suicidal individuals, and steps to increasing safety for someone who is struggling. Hopefully this brings insight to a much avoided topic and creates awareness for those who are silently struggling. This week we welcome Brandon Morris to T&J. Brandon serves as the music and youth pastor at New Pleasant Baptist Church in Gaffney, SC. In an effort to get Brandon loose and comfortable, we play a fun game to determine Brandon's music IQ from the early 2000's. Following some brief, yet adorable, duets between Brandon and Marty we dive into this mysterious person and his work in ministry. Starting in high school, we discuss how Brandon went from faking his faith to finding his faith. He graciously provides us with some funny stories along the way; stories that his parent likely did not laugh at while they happened. Shout out Terry and Anita. We discuss his marriage to THE Kayla Morris and how he tried to mess that up along the way as well. Lastly, we dive into the topic of worship, being a worship leader, and how modern worship songs impact the church.
Mental illness seems to be separated at times from the Christian life. There is a modern mindset within mental health that makes it more open for discussion and this mindset has infiltrated the church. As Marty and Josh discuss mental health, they pull out Biblical examples and passages where this modern mindset is actually an old issue.

SPECIAL GUEST POD! In episode 20 of T&J, we interviewed a fellow therapist from the burg......Mr. Ross Hill! He works at Modern Wellness and is a friend of Marty's as well as a fellow listener of the pod. Ross talks with both Marty and Josh about his own journey in life while sipping on some of his delicious Aldi iced coffee. He once was a believing Christian who studied apologetics and went to church regularly. But after awhile he started to ask questions about the faith he was holding onto and went on a journey of rediscovering what he believes or does not believe. This interview was a safe space to talk about the process of what that journey looked like, the questions he had/has, and where he is currently in his beliefs. On today's episode, we discuss how men view themselves in society and how that perspective effects the way men communicate with others. Marty opens up about the struggles men have in expressing their emotions or issues going on in their own lives. We discuss how society may have shaped an unhealthy perception of masculinity. Celia works in Greer at Eastside Family Therapy Associates as a LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor). She has 30 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults in a variety of settings. Gaining valuable insight through various roles in school and church settings, she enjoys counseling children, families and adults of all ages. She enjoys working with couples and individuals facing a variety of issues, including grief, anxiety, depression, parenting issues, and traumatic stress.

Lewis The truth in this quote by C.S Lewis speaks directly to the mental illness we call depression. Depression is something people have a hard time categorizing but even a harder time escaping. In this week's episode, Marty and Josh discuss the elements that make depression similar to anxiety but more severe in a different way. They talk about the difference between being sad and being depressed as well as the criteria for a clinical depression diagnosis. The discussion leads to understanding how the spiritual life, mental wellness, and physical health contribute to depression. This is one of the most widely talked about, diagnosed, and impactful mental illnesses in the world. Clinical anxiety is life-altering but it is up to you if it is in a healthy way or unhealthy way. What Marty and Josh do in this episode is help clarify what clinical anxiety looks like in comparison to stress or worry of everyday life. They discuss anxiety as more of an opportunity to help refine your life than to destroy it. Marty and Josh lay the foundation for this month's episodes by clarifying what is the correct view of mental illness and what mental health looks like. People are quick to self-diagnosis but this tries to paint a clear picture of what a clinical diagnosis incorporates so that we can filter through what is normal and what needs attention. Marty and Josh seem to take different perspectives of the terminology behind mental illness that can actually be beneficial when both views are blended together.
