Welcome back to our safe space where hope and resilience light the wayâthis is "Courage to Change," and I am your companion on this transformative journey, Karen. Today's episode is a profound and perhaps liberating one, as we delve into the concept of powerlessness in the realm of addiction recovery. In the world of recovery, admitting powerlessness over an alcoholic or addict can seem counterintuitive. It's like waving a white flag in a battle we're used to fighting tooth and nail. But is it truly defeat, or the first step towards true healing? We're going to tackle this hard-hitting topic head-on and uncover the subtle differences between surrendering control and empowering ourselves through the recovery process. We'll dissect the idea that recognizing our powerlessness isn't about giving into defeat; rather, it's about shifting focus and energy from an unwinnable war into nurturing ourselves and our loved ones through healthier means. It's a powerful distinctionâusing the tools of recovery not as another strategy to change the addict but as a means to restore our own sanity and well-being.I'm excited to extend an invitation to you to join our private Facebook group, "Courage to Change with Karen," where our community thrives on empathy and support. This is a place for you to continue the conversation, seek guidance, and find solidarity amongst peers who are also embracing their vulnerabilities. So, settle in, listen with an open mind, and let's explore the paradoxical strength found in acknowledging our powerlessness. God's Will versus My Will? Â How do I tell the difference? Â Well when I am acting quickly out of fear and desperation that is usually my will and when things are slowly thought out without urgent panic it's usually God's will. Â
Why am I still unhappy now that my loved one is sober? Â Understanding codependency and why you keep recreating the same situations.Â
Al Anon is a safe place. Â Anonymity of the members is the foundation of the program. Â
Being kind to yourself is a new concept to most of us. Â Being kind and compassionate with yourself on your own journey of recovery is paramount in living your best life. Â
Living with an Alcoholic causes distorted thinking. Â Â Our ideas and attitudes must change. Â Slowly but surely we must be open to seeing the reality of our situation. Â
Everyday I can look at my self and see what improvements I can make....on me, not on someone else!
"Keep it Simple" Â - Stay in the moment and do the next indicated thing. Â When I approach tasks like this I can do anything!
I am so grateful to have recovered the connection to my spirituality, for in doing so I have regained an essential part of myself. Â
Today I know that I can't fix anyone but myself, and I challenge myself daily to seek a richer more meaningful life. Â
Today I make a sincere effort to roll in the clover, Kick up my heels & celebrate being alive!
If I can see nothing but trouble I am seeing with limited vision. Â I must use the tools I have learned in Al-Anon to shift my perception. Â
With each new challenge, many of still need reminding that "there is no situation to difficult to be bettered and no unhappiness too great to be lessened".
With a clear picture of my loved ones in my higher powers care, I am much more able to let go and let God. Â
I've grown enough in Al-Anon To realize that the look, tone or mood of another person toward me often has nothing to do with me.Â
The more I give thanks for my life as it is, The more I can accept the healing that allows me to change and grow.Â
Recovery can involve as much unlearning as learning. Â My security cannot be based on learning "the rules" because once I truly learn them, they change. Â
Does Analyzing my situation provide any useful insights, or is it an attempt to control the uncontrollable?Â
Sometimes the only way I can determine what to accept and what to change is by trial and error. Â Mistakes can be opportunities to gain the wisdom to know the difference.
When I gather flowers, or marvel at nature's wonders, I do not lose face when I concede that I am not in control.
When things don't happen according to my schedule, I can accept that there may be a reason, and I can learn to adjust to what is. Â
No matter how long I work the Al-Anon program, I will never cease finding new ways to apply it to my life. Â
The perspective I've gained through Al-Anon has shown me that some of the most difficult times in my life have produced the most wonderful changes. Â
We are all as unique as out fingerprints, but as our fingers join in the closing prayer, each of us is part of a circle of hope that is greater than any of our individual differences. Â
Suddenly I am aware of a familiar chaos. Â It is a signal that my life has, for the time being, become unmanageable. Â I will try to acknowledge this- and then put a little spiritual space between my problems and myself. Â
Maybe life is a series of experiments. Â Just for today I might try slightly changing some pattern of behavior that repeatedly causes me problems, just to see what happens. Â
I don't have the power to change another person. Â If I am dealing with Violence, I must be the one who changes. Â
In meeting after meeting in Al-Anon I am reminded that I can only work with what i have today. Â
There is no more need to judge or hate myself just because I experience human feeling. Â
The painful lessons of a lifetime are not unlearned overnight, but Al-Anon is helping me to learn that it is safe to feel, to hope, even to dream. Â
My Higher Power's gifts sometimes take unusual forms. Â Perhaps something I regard as a problem is really a form of assistance.Â
Your daily habits and routines disclose a lot about your mental, physical and spiritual state.
Play the hand you were dealt. If you learn to be ok with yourself and acknowledge what is going on in your world and your the part you play in it, then you can change what you don't like and keep the rest.
Willingness is key! Step six is simply me being willing to change. I admit I need help every time I go to an Al Anon meeting, I pick up this book, I pray. These are all sign to the universe or to my higher power that I am willing to receive new ideas and new information.
Enlarging your spiritual condition on a daily basis is necessary for long term happiness and recovery. Practicing Steps 10, 11 & 12 give me a simple daily routing to keep moving forward and continue my spiritual growth.
Thank God I don't have to figure out everything myself. When I get overwhelmed and life gets to be to much I can ask for help and trust that God can do for me what I can't do for myself.
Resentments cut me off from the sunlight of the spirit. They just aren't worth it. They steal my joy and slow me down on my journey of joy.
If I was to sum this reading up in one sentence, I think it would be "Live and Let Live". I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and I don't have to be. What Freedom!!!
Life is a journey not a destination. My experience, good and bad, is best used to help someone on their journey of recovery and nothing else. Re living the past, dwelling in guilt, remorse & shame only keeps me stuck. I must move forward and to do that I must forgive myself and grow.
Just like the Steps are the answer to the individual the Traditions are the answer for the group. Learning to be one of the spokes in a wheel and not driving the entire car has been a huge lesson for me. God is the ultimate authority in all of our groups. Encouraging us to place principles before personalities.
Al anon is a spiritual program. Â It's not something you can force, study or "wrap your mind around". Â It is an amazing shift in perception that happens sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly if you are consistent and open minded. Â
Allowing new people in the program time to adjust to a new way of thinking can sometimes be very difficult. Â Patience, understanding and time is necessary to help someone make their own progress.
Making amends is a way of righting a wrong, even if the other person is no longer living or reachable.
Today I will try to stay in the moment, accept life on life's terms and respond with courage and grace. Â Perhaps my experience will help someone else.
I can love and support others I care about and still take care of myself. Â Just because someone I love is unhappy doesn't mean I have to be unhappy.
Learning to have feelings and match them with the appropriate reactions has been one of my biggest gifts of this program. Â Realizing I can pause and pray has changed everything for me. Â
By Letting fo of old ideas, I have a fighting chance to learn, grow and discover wonderful things about myself. Â
In recovery we must learn to look at the entire situation with as much honesty we can muster. Â
Learning to Live One Day at a Time. Â Taking the cues from nature to just try and go along. Â
Sometimes people disagree, all conflict is not bad. Â Conflict and blame can be an excuse to keep me distracted so I don't have to feel my powerlessness. Â
Prayer is my way to say I am willing & openminded to new information. Â Prayer says I am willing to be helped. Â
Focusing on my assets not only boost my self esteem but help me recover from the affects of someone else's Alcoholism. Alcoholism is a family disease and tears everyone in the family down and makes every person involved suffer.Â
Regardless of the situation going on in everyone else's life I must focus on my own recovery and my own spiritual journey. Â
Our painful past, our spiritual experience in this program can truly help someone else. Â Passing the message of Al Anon is not only my responsibility it is my pleasure. Â
Stepping out of Denial and being honest with ourselves will allow us to continue to grow in every area of our lives. Â
Though things don't always go my way. Â I can accept what I can not change, and change what I can by shifting my perception.
Learning to lean on my Higher Power to not only get me through crisis, but help grow through difficult times. Â
Detaching with Love! I must let people experience their own satisfactions and disappointments. Â
Words can hurt - so can snide remarks and snarky looks. Â I must ask God for help everyday to change my old habits of being sarcastic and realize I'm just being mean. Â Be Kind!
The 11th Step is my daily inventory to clean up anything I might have missed during the day. Â If I clean up my side of the street daily I can walk into the next day a free woman and I'll never have to do a 4th step again. Â
Step 10 gives me an opportunity to live in the day and clean up mistakes as I make them. Â I then no longer have to carry resentments and fears with me into the next day. Â
Step 9 - The key to this step is getting direction with someone who has experience with this step. Â this will guarantee that you can move forward with cleaning up your side of the street while not continuing to harm yourself or others. Â
Are you holding on to defects of character because they still serve you? Perhaps they are how you have survived. Â Step six is a big step and you might need to pray for the willingness to be willing. Â Be openminded and keep going. Â
The process of being honest with myself, seeing things as they are not as I'd like them to be. Â
The 3rd Step saves me from doing this alone! Â Open-mindedness is all I need to let new info in and shift my perception and my focus. Â
Hope! Â A little chink in the armor of despair! Â We don't have to believe it will happen, only that it could happen!
Arguing with an active alcoholic is a waste of time and energy. Â Ask God for help and don't engage. Â
My spiritual experiences have built my faith in my higher power. Â Problems come & go but God is always with me. Â
Put down the whip & the chair! Â Learn to be kind & gentle with yourself, if not you than who?
Living outside of the lines! Â Being flexible to try it a different way and learn new ideas!
Having a solid foundation in the program of Alanon has given me confidence and a feeling of safety that the disease of Alcoholism had taken away. Â
Learn to be still, start slow and then slowly watch your ability to relax and breath increase.Â
Small incremental changes are the best way to make impactful, Â long term changes in your life! Â
Expectations are premeditated resentments. Â Placing your expectations on others is what is causing you distress & unhappiness. Â Leaving people alone and letting them have their own life experience is a form of freedom & happiness., but it takes practice!
