The podcast that is all things regarding U.S. Service Academy admission. Whether it is West Point, the Naval Academy (Annapolis) or the Air Force Academy- admission is as much about the process as it is the attributes of the candidate. It is complex—and involves several qualifications which make it far more rigorous than the traditional college application. This podcast helps the listener understand and navigate the process in order to gain a coveted appointment.
The Naval Academy Whole Person Multiple (WPM) is the formula that decides every appointment, and it was just published for the first time. LTC Kirkland and Trish Dach walk through every category the Naval Academy now weights publicly and explain what families should actually change in their preparation now that the guesswork about admissions is gone.

They also explain what the Rand recommendation study showed about score clustering, why optional letters of recommendation should come from coaches and community leaders rather than distant senior figures, how to quantify leadership impact with real numbers in the application, and the three concrete changes families should make starting this week to reflect the published weights.

LTC Kirkland and Dr. (COL) Cajigal break down the head and neck medical standards from DoDI 6130.03 that generate the most anxiety for Service Academy families. This episode covers eyes and vision, refractive error cutoffs, the spherical equivalent calculation, LASIK and PRK timing, keratoconus, color vision testing and service-by-service policies, ear tubes and hearing tests, chronic sinusitis versus routine sinus infections, braces and Invisalign timing (including the June 1 rule), and wisdom teeth. They explain what the standards actually say, how DoDMERB applies them, where families commonly misunderstand what is disqualifying, and why applicants should never delay medically appropriate treatment out of fear of DoDMERB. The eyes and vision section uses graphics and visual explanations. That portion is much easier to follow on screen. If your family is navigating DoDMERB, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is working the process the wrong way.
In this episode, LTC (Ret.) Rob Kirkland and COL (Ret.) Dr. Arthur Cajigal break down Mr. Larry Mullen’s well-known Applicant Reference Guide—the practical DoDMERB “do’s and don’ts” that help applicants and families work with the system instead of against it.
You’ll learn why the applicant should lead the process, how parents can support without taking over, what strong medical documentation actually looks like, why summary letters often fall short, how to think about DoDMETS vs. DMACS 2.0, and what families should avoid if they want to keep things moving.
In this episode:
• Why the applicant should lead communication with DoDMERB
• How parents can support without slowing things down
• What counts as a strong medical record submission
• Why summary letters often are not enough
• The difference between the DoDMETS portal and DMACS 2.0
• Why status updates can create panic if misunderstood
• Why timing matters in a first-in, first-out system
• Why asking “what are my chances?” usually leads nowhere
• What to do—and what NOT to do—to avoid unnecessary delays

If DoDMERB says "Disqualified," it can feel like the door just slammed shut. But for many competitive Service Academy applicants, that DQ is the start of the waiver review, not the end.
In this episode, LTC (Ret.) Rob Kirkland and COL (Ret.) Dr. Arthur Cajigal (former DoDMERB staff and Army ROTC Cadet Command surgeon) break down the waiver process from start to finish: who actually grants waivers, why documentation matters, what conditions tend to be waived, and what families can control to avoid delays.

Military values like honor, integrity, and courage don’t matter much when everything is calm, supervised, and low-risk.
They matter when you’re tired, frustrated, authority is real, and nobody’s watching.
Today LTC Kirkland breaks down why military values only hold under pressure if they’ve been trained as habits, using Aristotle’s practical ethics as the framework. Aristotle didn’t treat virtue as a personal identity or something you “believe in.” He treated it like training: repetition, discipline, and practiced reps that show up automatically when stress hits.
We’ll also look at what military history shows happens when ethical discipline erodes over time—and why leaders don’t “rise to the occasion,” they default to habit.

Are you assuming “I’m a varsity athlete, so the Athlete piece is handled”? That assumption can cost you an appointment. For the Service Academies, being “athletic” isn’t just team participation—it’s quantifiable performance, leadership, and a smart plan to crush the CFA.
In this Academy-focused episode of our Scholar • Athlete • Leader series, retired Army officer LTC Rob Kirkland and former Air Force officer Trish Dach break down how academies actually evaluate your athletic profile, what percent of your Whole Candidate Score it can influence, and how to tell your story so the board moves your score up—even if you’re not a team captain. We also cover real-world CFA strategy, timelines, and injury-proof planning.

Special Episode Worried the shutdown will derail your academy nomination or ROTC scholarship file? Take a breath. Academy admissions are operating close to normal. The friction is mainly in some congressional offices scheduling interviews and a few ROTC processing slowdowns at undermanned units and headquarters. If you are applying to both, here is what actually matters so you stay informed and calm.
What you will learn
• How the shutdown is affecting congressional nominations vs academy admissions
• What “slower, not stopped” looks like for ROTC processing by branch
• Why Jan 31, 2026 is still the nomination deadline that counts
• Competitive vs less competitive districts and what that means for interviews
• How ROTC boards have shifted and may shift in the future

In this episode, we discuss trends we are seeing with Naval Academy admissions.
Bottom line: there is evidence that Naval Academy admissions is choosing candidates according to unknown guidelines, instead of who Members of Congress pick or who the most qualified candidate in the district is according to the legacy Whole Person Multiple.
Today we provide commentary on what makes these 5 Naval Academy interview answers excellent, and how they could be improved. Listen along as you prepare for your interview with your future potential Blue and Gold Officer and Congressional nomination panel.
The Air Force Academy interview can be extremely intimidating for students, especially those who have little to no interview experience.

Were you turned down this year by the Naval Academy?
If you applied to the USNA Class of 2028 as a high school applicant, you had a lower chance of being appointed this year.
More and more post-high school candidates are re-applying and therefore there are less appointments available for direct entries. That's right, we estimate about 450 slots of the 1200 slots this year were given to candidates who were on their second application: NAPS students, Foundation students, and college students.
We go into what this means for high school seniors and reapplicants in this week's episode.
In today's episode, we give feedback on 5 examples of interview questions and answers from West Point candidates.
In this episode, LTC Kirkland and Capt Dach discuss two major changes to nominations and the way Service Academies (West Point, Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy) select candidates to offer appointments to for any candidates entering an Academy in June of 2025 or later. Each Member of Congress is able to now nominate 15 candidates instead of 10. The list of Qualified Alternates is expanding from 150 to 200 for each Service Academy. Understanding the military officer ethos and showing how you embody these characteristics is the cornerstone of successfully preparing for and succeeding in your application essays and interviews.
The mission of the US Naval Academy is to develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character, to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
In this episode, we interview a recent graduate who is an active duty Naval Surface Warfare Officer.
The Merchant Marine Academy is a federal service academy that educates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. In this episode, we interview a recent graduate who is an active duty Air Force officer.
Candidates (and parents) often confuse the difference between a nomination and an appointment to a Service Academy, especially if candidates are otherwise fully qualified. A candidate must be academically, physically, and medically qualified with a nomination in order to be considered for an appointment. The nomination must be to the specific Service Academy
Basically, a nomination is the legal authority for a Service Academy to consider a candidate for appointment.
In this episode, we will look at gaining a nomination through a Member of Congress
If a Service Academy candidate fails to obtain an appointment as a senior in high school or did not apply, doing a year of ROTC in college can give an applicant a significant advantage over other applicants. In this episode, we talk about the reasons for this and why.
The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) is worth 10% of the overall evaluation of a Service Academy applicant. It is important, therefore, to do well on this test. In this episode, we interview the experts at Platoon Fitness regarding how to succeed on the CFA.
