The Church is the laboratory where He does stuff. There is a wide variety of personalities. Some we like, and some we don’t like. But we all belong to Jesus. Every problem in the Church comes from disbelief of what God has clearly taught. And because we really can’t bring ourselves to believe it, we pretend we do. That’s the mask. And when we pretend we do, we become phony, angry, and self-righteous.

The Mother of All Masks
You call yourself a Christian? When was the last time you witnessed for Christ? Do you Tithe? Did you spend any time with the Lord this morning? When was the last time you read your Bible? When was the last time you spent a season in prayer? And you call yourself a Christian?!?
That’s how easy it is to manipulate you. The self-righteous wear a mask of perfection, and we measure ourselves against a fake standard, and we feel guilty.

The Devil’s Trinity

Isaiah 53 prophesied about Jesus, the son of God, they coming Messiah. The them suffering, pain, darkness, a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief. At the grave of his friend, he wept. In the garden, Jesus wept, like you and me when we face difficult times. Jesus understands pain and suffering, our pain and suffering.

What makes a strong church? Who builds the church? In Philippians 2 Paul said “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” This is how one church started and grew for 35 years.

Stress. If you are alive you have stress in your life. If you’re a Christian, you have more stress. The Christian Faith adds it’s own stress to our life. Witnessing, quiet times, tithing, being at church, and a multitude of other things all add stress. Matthew 6 says, do not be anxious for your life. Don’t be anxious for what you shall eat or wear. God knows what you need.

The 11th chapter of Hebrews talks of the heroes and martyrs of the faith, and Rahab is in the middle of it. God loves sinners, people who can’t get it straight, people who have secrets they dare not share, people with pain they dare not reveal. God loves you and me.

When you’re old, you speak the truth because you just don’t care who you offend. Jesus spoke the truth because He DID CARE. In Luke Jesus was having dinner with a Pharisee. A woman, a prostitute, came to Jesus… at the Pharisee’s house, began to wash Jesus feet. The religious Pharisee, was appropriately self righteous and properly offended by this sinful woman, who dared touch Jesus. We all want to be happy, but happiness is not a simple topic. There are a whole lot of happenings that destroy our happiness. So it is important to understand happiness from God’s perspective.
We owe it to those who are closest to us to be happy. Because if you are not a happy person you make them miserable. People who are happy act more decently.
Karl Marx was not a happy man.
Hitler was not a happy man.
Stalin was not a happy man.
Historically, look around, at some of the philosophers and those who did the most damage, they were not happy people. They did not know God and did not understand the biblical definition of happiness.

Religion is different from the Gospel. Religion is into power, the Gospel is into weakness. There is a danger because of religion. That we will take, with the best of intentions, take the wine Jesus gave us and turn it into water. We become self-righteous. We stick our nose in the air and we judge others. But, that’s not what it’s about. It’s about forgiveness.
