Masks in the Church

The Church is the laboratory where He does stuff. There is a wide variety of personalities. Some we like, and some we don’t like. But we all belong to Jesus. Every problem in the Church comes from disbelief of what God has clearly taught. And because we really can’t bring ourselves to believe it, we pretend we do. That’s the mask. And when we pretend we do, we become phony, angry, and self-righteous.

The Mother of All Masks

You call yourself a Christian? When was the last time you witnessed for Christ? Do you Tithe? Did you spend any time with the Lord this morning? When was the last time you read your Bible? When was the last time you spent a season in prayer? And you call yourself a Christian?!?

That’s how easy it is to manipulate you. The self-righteous wear a mask of perfection, and we measure ourselves against a fake standard, and we feel guilty.

We don’t understand why God allows bad things to happen to innocent people. This isn’t fair! Painful, confusing, we cuss and spit and beg God to take the pain away. What do we do when we hurt? Noonday Demon – Acedia, Part 1 – What is it

Acedia is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. It is sometimes translated “Sloth” or “laziness.” But wait, it’s far more than that. Acedia is a sin that we all suffer from. The monks called it “The Noonday Demon.” Acedia feels like depression, but it’s not depression. When you just don’t want to be religious anymore.

We have a messed up family. Ecclesiastes says “All is vanity.” It’s chasing after wind. Revelations can seem to be a pretty dark book about the future. What makes a strong church? Who builds the church? In Philippians 2 Paul said “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” This is how one church started and grew for 35 years.

You can sum up the Gospel in 1 word. Forgiveness!
Religion is different from the Gospel. Religion is into power, the Gospel is into weakness. There is a danger because of religion. That we will take, with the best of intentions, take the wine Jesus gave us and turn it into water. We become self-righteous. We stick our nose in the air and we judge others.
