Alright, you've made the space for hosting and now the fun part: filling the space! It's important that we enter this step with intentionality because otherwise it can be really easy to only host people that are like us in a way that is comfortable for us. But, the challenge that Scripture calls us into is hosting people on the margins in a way that points them to the safe, loving, convicting arms of Jesus. Are you ready? This one is pretty quick. Let's go!

In the beginning, God formed space and then He filled it (Genesis 1). What He formed was good. As we prepare to host, let's make sure our space is good - that it aligns with our mission and values. As God formed the space, that which would fill it was already on His mind (see also Ephesians 1). As we prepare to host, let's make sure our space is designed with intention, mindful of those who will fill it (more on that in Episode 205). In this podcast episode, we're going to share some practical ideas for making space. Our hope is that this spurs you on to be intentional in your physical design choices and to be generous in how you share your space.

As followers of Jesus, we do our best to follow His ways - and those ways are both individual and collective in nature. Today, we're primarily looking at God's heart for His people to be a collective. As Americans, we are surrounded by a form of individualism that is not aligned with Scripture, and it even plagues churches and Christian communities. Let's explore how to revive Biblical collectivism in the Western world.

Reformation Day Bonus Episode // Happy Reformation Day! We're kicking off a new series called "Reforming Our Faith." In this series, we'll share ways our own religious beliefs and values have evolved over the years as well as some ways we believe the global and/or Western expressions of Church could use reforming. In this intro episode, we're discussing the events of October 31, 1517 and some core focuses of the Protestant Reformation. Then, we'll shift gears to highlight the importance of reforming today.

Our kids are human beings, not a project to be managed, so how should that reality shape how we discipline, disagree, and resolve conflict?

Let us start by saying, we are so early in our parenting journey, but we have made some commitments based upon our Biblical worldview. These commitments are what we hope to share today - two phrases we avoid and a strategy we plan to implement. Stay tuned for the closing segment to learn some disciplinary tactics from our tool belt.

Here's what this episode is NOT: a practical, how-to guide for growing your monthly income.

Here's what we ARE talking about: the anxieties and pressures people in poverty experience, some perspective shifts we believe need to be made in cultural conversations surrounding money (or really the absence of it), the truth about where your identity lies, and some practical advice for inviting community into your burdens. Oh, and Trevor will get a little preachy on selfishness because the Spirit has been convicting him about arrogance as it pertains to finances.

By the end, you'll be motivated and equipped to take a deep breath and embrace a more God-honoring vision for your finances (or any physical burden).

HELPFUL LINKS:

Trevor referenced Tim Keller and the concept of self-forgetfulness. We highly recommend Keller's powerful book The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness: The Path to True Christian Joy

We have a lot of shared passions. We are also individual people with unique wirings. This week and next, we're unpacking some of the things that we carry a burden for. As we go, we'll be sure to look at these topics through the lens of our Family Team and we'll do our best to connect it all back to our ministry efforts as well.

So, for today's episode, we're talking about Jessie's unique burden to be "The Gatekeeper for Health." We'll cover why physical health matters in the life of a Believer and the importance of approaching physical health without anxious striving. We'll also share some practical steps we've taken to make our home healthier. These action steps were the fruit of countless hours learning from other women who are more knowledgable when it comes to natural health. Here are a few:

  • @scienceofessentials
  • @purelyparsons
  • @naturalnursemomma
  • @korimeloy
  • @taylorkulik

OTHER HELPFUL LINKS:

The term "Gatekeeper" is one we borrowed from Audrey Roloff. You should also follow her on Instagram for tips on building an intentional, healthy home

Speaking of intentional, you should check out The Intentional Parents Podcast. Their recent series on gender roles is very thought-provoking and has already proved helpful for our marriage. When it comes to Jessie's burden for gatekeeping, Trevor's role matters a lot - we didn't have time to go very deep on this in today's episode, so we really encourage you to listen to the episode on husbands from "The Intentional Parents Podcast"

After we recorded, we came across a really well-written blog post by Corey Dunn at "For Nutrient's Sake!" called An Open Letter to My Fellow Christians. If we knew about it earlier, we probably would have read some of it in today's episode. It's a wonderful reminder that Christians "should be at the forefront of the sustainability, biodynamic, fair-trade, holistic, beyond-organic, real food movement. We are called to be stewards. It’s high time we took that role seriously." We agree Corey!

We say we exist to love the vulnerable - what does that really mean? In this episode, we're unpacking the meaning of the term as well as the people groups it represents. These are the people we minister to here at The Haven Collective. As we journey through this conversation, you may hear some political buzzwords. Keep in mind that everything we do is driven by God's Word and a desire to love people well, not politics. Our politics are informed by our faith and relationships, not the other way around.
