Presentations and conversations to unleash authenticity and influence excellence!

Leadership is a moment, a journey, and a symphony. Every leader has to be a sage on the stage and at times, guide by your side. Through all these stages effective leaders connect, engage and influence in ways that seem almost magical. Yet, research in neurosciences and neuropsychology tells us that these leaders follow certain principles and practices. This podcast will explore, amplify and celebrate such leaders, their strategies, and their successes at work and in life.

Impostor syndrome, also known as impostor phenomenon or impostorism, is a psychological occurrence in which people doubt their skills, talents, or accomplishments and have a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as frauds.[1] Despite external evidence of their competence, those experiencing this phenomenon do not believe they deserve their success or luck.Regardless of how long you've held leadership roles, you'll often find yourself facing impostor syndrome. Impostor syndrome is a thought pattern where individuals doubt their achievements and have a persistent fear that they will be exposed as frauds. If you start to lose confidence in yourself, be deliberate with your thoughts to help you stay the course and not lose confidence, suggests speaker and coach Paul N. Larsen in this episode. He also share powerful and poignant stories of his own experiences and his strategies on how to overcome these challenges one tiny step at a time, everyday.About the SAGE and GUIDE podcast:Presentations and conversations to unleash authenticity and influence excellence in leadership. There are three reasons why people hesitate to set goals and achieve them.

The first is that people, do not know how. They know they want to succeed, win, grow, evolve, and have better control of their future. They also know that there is wisdom in setting goals but they, simply, do not know how. The second is fear of failing at achieving goals and then facing disappointment, loss, ridicule, etc., And, the third reason, also, fear of success. What does that mean/ It means if they reach a certain height of achievement and success they begin to worry about failures later, after success. They feel the drop and the disappointment will be higher. I know the last one is quite counter-intuitive but IT is true.

In this episode, Raju blends in some neuroscience with the psychology of setting and achieving goals with examples and stories in less than 30 minutes.

Often we all work on our external appearance and behavior to gain and feel confidence. That works for a while, claims Counselling Psychologist and Image Consultant Vandita Singh from Mumbai, India.

What really works, she claims, is when we manage to step out of the facades and self-deceptive habits that we have formed over time.

Listen in to recognize what we do and how we can improve our confidence authentically and then influence our worlds.

Talking to @Kahlil Bagatsing was like chatting with a blood brother. We did not start out with the intention of talking about #leadershippresence and #response but ended up doing just that and naming the episode such.

At Upwardly Global, Kahlil helps professionals in the USA find a job that fits their fancies and their skills such that they optimize and excel.

The reason we chose that topic title, essentially, is because Kahlil's presence and responses were calm, cool, collected, compassionate, and congruent I begged to explore that element of his personality and I thought leaders across the world would love to experience and emulate.

Have a look-see!

For a long time I did NOT want to talk about gratitude. Perhaps, I wasn't much grateful inside of me OR perhaps, I thought "gratitude" was for the birds. It was soft, fluffy, and mushy like pink cotton candy. Nope, I did not much care for an attitude of gratitude until I was asked to do a workshop on it a few months ago.

Now, I have learned that gratitude carries a better kick than mindfulness, meditation even days and months of hedonistic indulgences.

Here, in this last episode for 2022 and the first one for 2023, I have made an effort to capture the essence of my discoveries on the path to being grateful.

It is though partly connected to self-acceptance which you can hear about in Episode No: 3 on Self-Acceptance here.

In this episode, virtuoso facilitator, John Philipp Green from the United Kingdon shares his insights, his experience and his tips on how to blend in the gentle art and science of facilitation into leadership.

Process facilitation is about having a clear destination and a strong route map. We keep this map simple and straightforward: This means you can all contribute fully to the event, knowing that our neutral facilitator is managing the timings and structure.

Here's how:

One, become really and truly good at what they do. Day in, day out all the immersion into acquiring new knowledge, building skills and minding behavior needs to have one singular focus and that is to serve the needs of the client, the customer, the need for creative construction.

Two, stay flexible and fluid to the dynamics of change. Keeping the client-desired outcomes in mind the facilitator must live and thrive in the moment of what constantly emerges. Fuel the emergence gently when it is virtuous and empower the client to stretch and own the change when it is not.

Three, strive to stay invisible in the present and become redundant in the long-term. No better glory in driving change when the change recipients come and claim that they did it on their own and they can continue to evolve and grow on their own.

Performance excellence needs to be unleashed, catalyzed from outside often because people, to play safe overtime, hold themselves down out of fear, doubt, or out of sheer lack of awareness.

Claims, Dr. Dilip Abayasekara, that often it requires an external, objective, and benign observer-coach to help us notice and then unleash that internal brilliance and potential.

Hope you enjoy and learn from the wise and gentle words of pastor, speaker, coach, and international director of Toastmasters, Dr. Dilip Abayasekara.

About the SAGE and GUIDE podcast:

Presentations and conversations to unleash authenticity and influence excellence in leadership. All leadership starts with a moment and becomes a journey, and a symphony. During these times every leader has to be a sage on the stage and at times, a guide by her people's side.

To mold, to modify, and to motivate others with your voice, given whatever quality of your vocal cords, you must set up a powerful and authentic intention. So if you want to calm, console, or encourage then your whole being must want to do exactly that. Your voice will then flex accordingly and deliver the message with precision and compassion.

This was an amazing conversation with former TV Host and now prolific Voice Artist Nikki Martinez who gives her voice to audiobooks,  wellness apps, and other services.

Anger, suggests Pat Johnson, is diagonally opposite to the dimension of love, agape love. Anger roots from and is influenced by fear unfounded and is the output of all our accumulated traumas, drams, and programming. Leaders can employ this very strong emotion fruitfully by accepting their own vulnerability to it then creating space for others and collaborating with people, all people, same and different from ourselves.

Legacy is a powerful word. It is all about who you have become and what you have left behind. It’s about your personal brand and the impact you’ve had on people’s lives. Yet in the business industry, legacy is a reflection of a successful business because it allows that business to create and use a lasting reputation. It also allows your company or product to survive beyond you and your employees — but this is something that could be hard to achieve if only you have the ability to create a legacy for your company or product. This leads to an important question- "How can you create your own legacy and be able to leave a meaningful one?"

This episode of Sage and Guide Podcast features Aruna Katara, the president of Hope Foundation, a public charitable trust / society established by Late Shri Pralhad P. Chhabria in the year 1979 with the objective of rendering social services towards nation building.

Specifically, Aruna shares how her late father lived and left a meaningful legacy. Beyond that, she also talks about the secret behind creating your own legacy.

Love and leadership, in the modern world, are most unlikely to be found in just a single statement. On the other hand, I had the pleasure of connecting with them and discussing their applications with the help of my guest for this episode, Kerry Steuart.

We all know that love is a powerful driving force in helping others and influencing others to grow and evolve.

In a similar manner, leadership is also serving, caring, and influencing others to grow and evolve. In this episode, Kerry and I indulge more in how the philosophy of love can be practiced by business leaders, the effect of love on an organization's progress, and the rightful approach of leaders in exercising love within themselves and pouring it onto their people.

"You want to help the person help themselves. So help the person to fish rather than give the fish to the person and then the person is dependent on you." - Ramesh Shadadpuri

Developing other people is an essential element of leadership. It involves efforts to know them, appreciate them and build their capabilities as they develop over time. If a leader fails to develop people, they are more likely to fall into the trap of a less than optimal performance and even greater lack of success. However, people need to develop themselves first before they can be good at leading others.

In order to make a difference in the world, it is important to develop yourself before others. Without self-development, you will never be able to lead with confidence and in a way that inspires team members and creates motivation for moving forward.

In this episode, Ramesh Shadadpuri, an experienced educator and a life coach, shares his expertise as he talks about the magic behind developing yourself and others. Specifically, you will discover:

  • the "how" of developing yourself
  • the strategies to stay on top of learning
  • how to turn an organization into a "learning organization"
  • the Nadella's leadership model
  • how to help others help themselves

"Burnout is something that we do have a choice over.”

- Stephen Berkeley

Burnout is a storm of emotions. It comes at you like a wave, sweeping away your energy, and trashing it all over. It is one of the most common job-related problems and a major cause of employee disengagement. It can build between stressful demands on employees and the tendency to see any job as never-ending suffering.

But storms do come and storms do go away. It's been said that a storm may last for several days, and can be devastating to a community. However, when it comes to recovery, it is important to recognize that storms have a beginning and an end. So as we face the challenges that emerge from the storms of life, stillness in the storm will help us not just bear stress but grow through it.

In this episode, I sat down with a good friend of mine, Stephen Berkeley. As a change and culture facilitator, he shares his takes on how to find calmness and stillness amidst storms in life. Specifically, you will discover how burnout affects a person, how to overcome burnout by changing your mindset, the importance of marginal gains, how to have a huge reservoir of inner calm, and patience as the number one virtue. His thoughts and words are inspired by the book, Stillness in the Storm by Authors Jan Alcoe and Dr. Sarah Eagger,

This episode shares short, transformational stories and provides the three-step journey to enhancing faith in yourself.

While listening, you may find yourself asking…

"If you can reach out to the heart of a person, he or she gives his or her lifetime commitment...and if I always say that passion is about competence, you can buy competence [from] a shelf. But it is your LEADERSHIP that should trigger PASSION." Dr. Anil Khendalwal

Transformations in the private sector are common, but transformations in the public sector, let alone a bank the size of Bank of Baroda, are unheard of. The reasons are simple: bureaucracy, government accountability, and slow systems, among other factors, have plagued our public sector endeavors for decades.

In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Anil K Khandelwal, a transformational leader who, as Chairman and Managing Director of Bank of Baroda, turned the bank around in just three years. Tune in as you discover why your job as a CEO is not to do business but to create intangibles that will drive the tangibles - thus, bringing transformation into effect.

"Stop doubting yourself. Stop thinking small. Stop being satisfied with comfort and instead go for growth."- Jim Cathcart

Leadership isn't easy. Being a leader, you have to make tough calls, deal with people issues, and still try to look great doing it. It’s a combination of great skills, experience, and intelligence. But those things alone don’t make a leader. Leadership is about setting an example and moving forward with your team. It’s about creating a safe environment where your members feel supported and empowered. It’s about maintaining a healthy work-life balance, so you can keep yourself in check and on track for success. Unfortunately, not everyone is a leader — or even wants to lead. These leaders suffer from self-doubt and lack confidence, which ultimately leads to their poor performance as a leader.

Self-doubt is the enemy of leadership. It’s the bad habit that makes you question your abilities and hold back when you should be leading. But that’s not all self-doubt does; it has a wide-ranging impact on your entire team. When leaders doubt themselves, everyone follows suit. In this case, how can you be confident and authentic as a leader?

In this episode, Jim Cathcart, an international speaker and considered as the top 10 motivational speakers in the world, shares his takes about the power of having authenticity and self-belief as a leader and speaker. Specifically, we delve into:

  1. how leaders can break out of their shells
  2. the strategy between speaking and writing
  3. the importance of authenticity and self-belief as a leader and speaker

For decades, the advice for organizations in a changing world has been to "manage your culture." Yet with the speed of innovation and the ubiquity of technology driving us faster than ever before, that's easier said than done.

Culture is the most important force of a company, as it contributes to operating style, interpersonal relationships and corporate values. From Apple to Google, from Zappos to Amazon, these companies have earned their place in history through the strength of their corporate cultures. Leaders like Larry Page, Reed Hastings, and Tony Hsieh take culture seriously – but never take it too seriously. These leaders are masters at managing culture as an ongoing discussion while adapting to ever-changing circumstances. However, despite the importance of culture, it is surprisingly challenging to manage.

In this episode, David Cohen, an author and a thought leader on corporate culture and behavioral competencies, reveals how to manage your company's hard-earned culture in a changing world. Specifically, you will discover:

  1. how corporate culture is formed
  2. the relationship between culture and value
  3. the tips for managing corporate culture

When these two sides are established and you dig in your heels with resolve then building a bridge between your identity and intentions will become an intuitive, automatic process. Every single moment, every single day, every little action you take will be a fruitful one.

It will be like laying bricks between two well-aligned pillars. All through this process, your values and visions gain higher resolution. You become emotionally calm, confident, brave, authentic, and even compassionate towards all others who are on journeys of their own. The difference will be that you will ‘know thyself’ and know why and where you are headed.

Here are the five questions, all over again,

  1. What are a few human behaviors that turn you on the most?

  2. What are those one or two things that most occupy your energy and daily time?

  3. What do you dream about? More specifically, what do you daydream about?

  4. What exactly, unconditionally do you want?

  5. What are the things, in your current state of affairs, which you are willing to let go of?

Indulge and immerse yourself in these questions. Put your heart and mind into answering them such that you will never have to memorize stuff like, “so your uniqueness Raju is that you are a courageous, compassionate, authentic being who wants to help other beings get clarity then lead a happy and fulfilling life.”

Have a good flight!

Yeah, so why do people fear standing up and speaking out?

The National Institute of Mental Health, USA reports that public speaking anxiety, or glossophobia, affects about 73% of the population. The underlying fear is a judgment or negative evaluation by others. Public speaking anxiety is considered a social anxiety disorder.

Here’s another interesting take on it by the National Society Anxiety Center, USA. They say, “Evolution psychologists believe there are primordial roots. Our prehistoric ancestors were vulnerable to large animals and harsh elements. Living in a tribe was a basic survival skill. Rejection from the group led to death. Speaking to an audience makes us vulnerable to rejection, much like our ancestors’ fear.”

One accepts the fact that he may be tall, short, intelligent, not intelligent, rich, unrich, successful, or unsuccessful at life. One also learns to accept that he may be easy to anger, easy to disturb, easy to sadden. One also learns to accept that he may be demanding, obsessive or even controlling.

This does not mean that one ought not to make efforts to change towards a better version of oneself but before making these efforts one ought to come to terms with whoever he is.

Huge amounts of our energies are wasted in lamenting about our past, or about the lack of resources or about our perceived personal shortcomings.

When we learn to accept the facts of our lives and label them as just being unique then we give ourselves and our lives multiple opportunities to evolve.

Here are three suggestions from the top of my head on how to go about accepting ourselves.

Your identity is the sum total of all that you believe in and all that you value. These beliefs and these values, over your lifetime, have accumulated into a single entity…you. Your genetic structure, your environment, your influences, your education, and your experiences keep stacking up into becoming you. For a large part of your life, you have little control over these elements but over time you begin to take charge. You begin to choose and carve out your own self. You begin to become a Michael Angelo to your own David-you. Yes, it does matter how early on in your life you pick up the chisel and hammer and how consciously, courageously, creatively, compassionately, and constructively you begin to use these tools. Therein lies self-mastery. Therein, your identity morphs your intentions into destiny.
