In today’s episode, I want to do a deep dive on a subject that doesn't always get the attention it deserves: sleep.
If you're like me, you've probably heard it all before: sleep is crucial.
But why is it often overlooked?
Why don't we prioritize it as fervently as our workouts or nutrition? The reality is, sleep is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal, and it doesn't come in a shiny container or with a hefty price tag. It's the foundation of my Optimal Lifestyle Hierarchy.
Now, as we gear up to adjust our clocks and enter a new season, it's the perfect time to revisit this critical topic. As we "fall back" and gain an extra hour, let's not just use it to catch up on lost sleep but to deepen our understanding of the sleep-performance connection.
In this episode, I’ll explore the science behind sleep and how it influences our hormones, performance, and even body composition. We'll uncover the lesser-known health risks associated with inadequate sleep and discuss practical strategies to optimize your sleep routine.
You'll learn how to create a sleep sanctuary in your bedroom, discover the importance of a consistent sleep schedule, and even delve into the role of nutrition in promoting better sleep. We'll talk about circadian rhythms and the impact of artificial light.
So, whether you're a fitness enthusiast, a competitive athlete, or simply someone who wants to live a healthier and more energetic life, this episode is your comprehensive guide to harnessing the full potential of sleep to enhance your life and fitness journey.
Join me on this journey to unlock the power of sleep and discover how it can elevate your performance inside and outside the gym
Here’s What You’ll Learn:
[2:19] Sleep’s impact on health, performance, body composition, and obesity
[13:16] Sleep deprivation’s impact on health and daily life
[21:42] Improving sleep quality through diet, stress management, and technology habits
[27:07] Sleep routine and circadian rhythm

One thing that comes with being a health, nutrition, and performance coach is people ask me a lot of questions.
Like A LOT of questions.
ALL the time.
But honestly? That’s probably one of my favorite parts about being a coach (you know - the whole helping people figure out how to live better lives part).
Don’t get me wrong, I love getting to talk to interesting and inspiring guests and nerding out on some of the most recent research and claims around nutrition, mindset, and performance too.
But getting to talk about what YOU my listener has on your mind is an extra special honor - I’m not just saying that.
And that is what today’s episode is all about - questions that end up in my inbox and DM’s asking my thoughts and help on a variety of topics like how to avoid the dreaded afternoon slump, get better sleep at night, get proper post-workout nutrition in when you’re intermittent fasting, and much more!
I can’t think of a better way to close out 2022, can you?
Here’s a brief overview of the episode:
[1:42] What could I eat for lunch that won’t make me so sleepy?
[12:07] Optimizing your sleep environment
[15:54 Is fasted cardio better for weight loss?
[19:39] Are you supposed to eat a certain amount of protein within a certain timeframe after exercising and how does that affect people that intermittent fast?
[27:03] Getting older and how do you keep from comparing today's self to 10 years ago self?
[31:52] What are the top sports everyone should at least try?

If you listen to this podcast then most likely you are a pretty active person.
Depending on what your fitness or athletic goals are, you might spend anywhere from 4 to 20 hours a week engaged with your body in movement and training (hopefully with awareness and work around your mobility).
But even with people who are putting in a lot of work in the gym or training, that’s still only roughly 12% of your time each week being actively engaged with your body.
So my question is: how engaged are you the other 88 to 98% of the time?
That’s where today’s guest, Luigi Pissani, M.S. comes in.
Luigi is the founder and president of FE:AL - Feeling Everything and Actively Living, a one of a kind lifestyle practice built for the 21st century stress ridden and physically disconnected individual.
Luigi began his career in health as an exercise physiologist turned strength and conditioning coach after graduating with a Master's from the University of Miami marrying his innate creativity to his academic and professional background.
He developed this practice as a path to authentic embodiment in the body, mind, and spirit. Known as the art of inner peace, FE:AL is a bridge between many different approaches in wellness that promotes not only strength and mobility, but also self expression, presence and stress and pain relief.
Luigi believes the human body is a canvas for beautiful works of art and relishes in guiding individuals in their own masterpieces.

Gratitude is without a doubt one of my favorite topics to discuss and just experience in general for so many reasons really, but the main one is it’s been such an incredible game changer in my performance and overall health.
Don’t take my word for it though - there are plenty of studies that have produced a bunch of evidence on not only the mental and emotional benefits of gratitude, but also on your overall health, performance, and relationships.
Sounds awesome - how do I get more of that in my life?
Glad you asked!
In today’s episode, mindfulness and meditation teacher, speaker, and writer, Lineliz Vassallo, returns to chat with us about how practicing a loving-kindness meditation can help you cultivate a sense of gratitude and overall well-being and connection to those around you during this holiday season and throughout the year in general.

In today’s episode, Bridget does a little deep dive on collagen.
Collagen is one of those supplements that has gotten really popular in the past couple of years.
More likely than not, you probably know someone who puts collagen in their coffee or smoothies every morning and they swear by its effects on their skin, their nails, their gut health, their joints, whatever it may be.
But is collagen that effective? And should you be taking a collagen supplement if you aren’t already?
First just a little reminder - if you haven't listened to it already, definitely check out the Performance Rx Podcast Episode 11 with Christina Hackett.
In that conversation, Christina and Bridget talk about all different types of supplements for health, performance, and longevity - including collagen.
That episode will give you a little insight into what collagen is along with a whole other bunch of supplements that you may want to consider taking for your health, performance, and longevity,
For this episode, we go a little deeper on collagen and talk about what it is the different types of it are as well as break down some of the science and reviews around its benefits like joint pain, skin health, hair growth, gut health, and its effectiveness as a protein supplement in general.
Here’s a brief overview of the episode:
[2:14] Types of collagen and the difference between hydrolyzed collage, collagen peptides, and gelatin
[6:03] Does collagen help with joint pain?
[9:48] Is collagen good to take as a protein supplement?
[12:09] Can collagen heal my leaky gut?
[14:14] Should you start taking a collagen supplement if you aren’t already?

Mom guilt has become a real thing in our society, but as prevalent as it all may seem, here’s the thing that no one acknowledges about it:
It’s kind of a sham.
And as my friend Raena Joy at The Working Momtras likes to point out: the idea of doing it all is also a sham.
It’s all a sham because it’s not helping or serving anyone - on an individual or societal level.
“But Bridget, you’re not a mother. You have no idea how something like motherhood can be so impactful on a person’s life.”
You are absolutely right about that.
And while I’m not a mother, I have witnessed the impact of mom guilt on many people in my life: friends, family, neighbors, clients. And as a coach, I know research shows that feeling guilty does nothing for changing our behavior. Instead, it gives more power to the part of the brain that seeks gratification - and we all know where that vicious cycle leads.
It leads us down a road where we trade realizing our health, performance, or overall life potential for empty dopamine hits.
I also know that no amount of empathy or knowledge can replace lived experience.
And that is one of many reasons why I had Certified Holistic Health Coach and busy mom of two boys, Ali Naglee, on the show today.
Ali understands the frustration of feeling like there is more out there and overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to turn to first.
But she also understands that learning how to make small, healthier choices for you and your family will cause a ripple effect beyond measure in all of your lives.
That’s her mission in working with clients, especially busy moms: provide them with the tools necessary to feel in control of their health and happiness for when things are good and when they get thrown a curveball.

If you ask Scotty Johnson what’s the secret to running not one, but two, successful gyms, he won’t tell you it was because of any special marketing tactics he did.
He also won’t say it’s because he has Master’s degree from one of the top universities in the country and a bunch of specialty certifications on everything from olympic weightlifting to sport nutrition.
Don’t get me wrong - as professional in the fitness industry, I can tell you that being properly credentialed and understanding business are important things.
But they’re just not as important as the number one thing that matters to your clients.
And that’s creating an environment and experience that not only gets them the results they are seeking, but is enjoyable for them.
And that is exactly the theme of our conversation today: good old fashioned fun.
Scotty's got over a decade of experience in the fitness industry as both a trainer and a gym owner. In 2015, Scotty opened and ran B-Fit Biscayne in Miami, Florida, which was a training facility that ultimately was nominated as one of the best gyms in South Florida several years in a row while earning over 5,000 5-star reviews on various platforms.
More recently, Scotty has opened his new gym in Michigan called Stomping Grounds Training and Recovery.
Scotty has extensive experience training individuals at every ability level and is intensely passionate about guiding people toward their fitness goals. He wholeheartedly believes in hard work and consistency, but knows that the most important piece of the puzzle is fun.

I want to let you all know something.
No one talks about the most foundational, basic, boring stuff for your health and performance because it's just not marketable.
I said what I said.
But here's the thing: one of the most underrated, impactful nootropics and performance enhancers out there is sleep.
And the great thing about it is it's free and accessible to all of us.
And yet, even with it being so beneficial to our health, performance, and body composition, a large chunk of our society is incredibly under-rested.
This a huge problem that not only concerns your performance in training, but your actual life!
Studies have shown that if you are getting less than the recommended amount of sleep (which is 7-9 hours each night for most adults), you’re putting yourself at great risk for chronic illness, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
On top of that, it drains your IQ and cognitive function, and kills your libido.
If you are one of the roughly 1 in 3 Americans who gets less than 6.5 hours of sleep a night, don’t stress (stressing out about things doesn’t help with getting good sleep anyway).
The positive news to all of this is just like so many things when it comes to our health, it can be reversed.
So just like having inadequate sleep is bad for you, returning to adequate sleep can reduce these risks and put you back online with your health and performance.
In today’s episode we talk about why sleep is important, and how you can make your sleep quality the best possible in order to perform your best in the gym and, of course, live a better life outside of it.
Here’s a brief overview of the episode:
[2:28] Health statistics on sleep and a good chunk of our society is not sleeping enough for their health, performance, or body composition
[8:05] Sleep’s effects on our hormones
[10:47] The health risks and impacts of not getting enough sleep
[15:47] How to create a sleep routine to maximize your sleep quality
[19:17] What to eat (and what to avoid) to get a good night’s rest
[24:30] Why staying up past midnight can mess you up
[27:12] How to optimize your bedroom for deep sleep
[33:24] Waking up to light and its role in having a more overall balanced sleep cycle

Here is a very alarming statistic: the average adult over the age of 60 in the U.S. takes 6 medications every day to manage their health.
What’s even sadder, is for many people, it doesn’t have to be this way.
It could have been prevented.
This is exactly what my guest today, Christina Hackett, has witnessed over the past 17 years as a pharmacist.
Christina doesn't want you to live on prescriptions for the rest of your life.
Every day, she sees firsthand the quality of life of “good” patients who have complied with a standard modern lifestyle and standard medical model for years compared to those who have chosen to be different.
She wants you to be different.
Christina is a nerd obsessed with preventative and holistic medicine and loves the options that well-chosen high quality supplements provide for anyone wanting to optimize their physiology.
Today, Christina and I sit down and have a great conversation about supplements, not just for sports performance, but also for just health in general, and longevity.
And you'll be surprised to hear about how some of the supplements that do contribute to our health and longevity also, in turn, are performance enhancers so to speak.
Grab a notepad and get ready to dive into the details and research that Christina brings to the show as she and I discuss some of the most important supplements you can take for not only for your performance, but also to live a long and healthy life.
And if you’re worried about what supplements brands you can actually trust to put what’s on the label, she’s got you covered here.

Hot take: Reverse Dieting is probably as close as you can get to a unicorn diet without literally using magic to defy the laws of thermogenesis.
Yes, just like the Tooth Fairy, a diet that conforms to your exact wishes and works off pixie dust just doesn’t exist.
But – this doesn’t mean you can’t strategically manipulate your food intake to consume more calories without gaining body fat, or even yes, sometimes losing body fat.
Enter the reverse diet.
Originated from the world of bodybuilding and popularized by people like Layne Norton. Reverse dieting has caught the attention of many people looking to gain muscle and lose fat, all while eating more food than they were before.
And while it sounds too good to be true, there is actual research to support these claims.
In this episode, Coach Bridget Moroney breaks down what exactly reverse dieting is, why it’s not magic (but also the science behind what it does actually work), and how you can go about setting up your own reverse diet.
This episode is coming at the perfect time with the holidays just around the corner in the Northern Hemisphere and so many people looking to avoid gaining weight over the holiday season.
Reverse dieting could be the perfect nutrition strategy for you to not only avoid weight gain while enjoying the holidays, but also set yourself up for some great success when the New Year, New Me crowd rolls in.
If you have any questions or want help getting your reverse diet set up, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

“Sex coaching isn’t just about sex.”

For anyone who is pursuing high performance in their training, being at home in your body is key.
For that reason, I sat down with Rachel to have a conversation not just about sex, but how anyone can feel more appreciative and connected to their body so they can both performance and live a better life as a result.

That’s what the Feel Good Expert herself, Tangie Nadimi, is here to show us.
Tangie is Certified Human Design Reader and Life Coach. She bridges her expertise in 2 fields to provide you logical tools to help you embody your most authentic self.

Sign up for email updates here What comes to mind when you think of health, wellness, and optimal performance? Physical or biological health most certainly. Mental and emotional health? Sure. And if you have a holistic view of health and wellness, you may even include environment to fit into the biopsychosocial model of health. But what about spiritual? Although some doctors acknowledge the role of the biopsychosocial spiritual in end of life care, what about our everyday lives? Just to be clear, I’m referring to spiritual in a very broad, open, highly individualized sense here, not religion. In today’s episode with Nina Born, we chat about the role of spirituality in living an optimal life, how to develop a spiritual discipline for recovery, and the sacred womb circles she facilitates to empower women to take back their body sovereignty. Sign up for email updates here Here’s the secret about weight loss diets and 30-day challenges that no one will tell you: If you’re going to change yourself on the outside, you need to change yourself on the inside first. This means habits, behaviors, mindset, self-talk, and yes, even your identity. Don’t think that dropping X amount of weight is going to magically fix everything else that’s going on in your life. That is a sure-fire way to stay stuck on a hamster wheel of frustration. Everyone likes to talk about and show off what they’ve accomplished in those 30 days and how much weight they’ve lost. But what no one talks about is what happens on day 31 or 32, 33…you get the point. Today my conversation with Sheena Lawrick covers all of that: the pitfalls of quick fixes, what behavior change really entails, and how long of a process it really is. Sheena is a lifelong athlete and a two time Canadian Olympian. Her passion has always been directed towards getting the most out of her body, she's had a series of life changing experiences that range from competing at the highest levels of softball, competitive CrossFit, to becoming a mother for the first time and now expecting her second child. All of this has allowed her to learn the value of being able to adapt to the changes that life throws her way. Sheena believes that there is no one right diet and that each person is unique in their nutritional needs. She values the connection and relationship that she creates with each client, and she teaches positivity patients at a trust the process mentality. Here’s a brief overview of the episode:
[02:19] Sheena’s background as a female athlete and her transition into coaching [07:10] Beyond the Box Nutrition and their approach to working with clients when it comes to nutrition and lifestyle changes [12:42] The role of mindset in health and nutrition coaching [22:06] Identity statements and how Sheena applies principles from the book Atomic Habits to her nutrition clients [32:52] Embodying our new identities and Amy Cuddy’s research on body language [35:14] Starting with the simplest of actions in order to make big life changes [43:53] Changing your behavior is hard, so stop beating yourself up about it! [53:35] 30-Day Challenges, 75 Hard, and what Bridget and Sheena would do differently if they were going to run a nutrition challenge at a gym today [71:25] Nutrition coaching for athletes and how they compare to lifestyle clients [78:07] Final thoughts around identity statements and how they’re meant to evolve with our lives

At least this is how Lineliz Vassallo refers to the Inner Critic. Any time you have those thoughts in your head that tell you that you’re not good enough or start comparing other people who seemingly have their lives more together than you - just know that’s your inner critic moving into throw you off your game. Before you start down the path of beating yourself up for having a voice that talks smack you to, don’t - a good percentage of our population struggles with their inner critic including people like the late, great Maya Angelou so you’re in pretty good company. In today’s episode, that originally aired as an Instagram Live, Lineliz and I have a conversation about all things inner critic and how we can tame it through mindfulness practices and being more aware of our thoughts and self-talk. I feel responsible to mention that as fun of a conversation we had, we did touch on some heavier subjects like suicide and the tragedy in Uvalde, TX. These are topics that can be very difficult for anyone to hear, so if you are sensitive or burnt out from recent events, I would suggest not listening past the 1 hour mark. And not to be a Debbie Downer, but it’s probably not a matter of “if” but “when” for anyone who is physically active or training. In today’s episode I sit down with Human Potential Coach Amir Khan to talk about the art and science behind Biohacking Pain. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, simply put, Biohacking is the art of changing the environment inside and outside of you so your body will do what you want. I don’t know about you, but as someone who has been on a lifelong mission to realize my physical potential, I definitely want my body to do what I want! Biohacking has been made famous and popular by people like Dave Asprey and Ben Greenfield but you don’t have to be a multi-millionaire in the tech world to practice biohacking. As you’ll learn in this in-depth discussion with Amir, there are so many ways to take care of our bodies and relieve (or even prevent!) pain that don’t cost us very much money or time at all.
