Transcript[00:00:00] Melissa Pang: Last week I was talking with one of our franchise, um, or with one of our franchisor members. And she reignited my love for franchising, which we know is an extreme love for franchising, but we were talking about the community that franchising is and just the, the network and the people within franchising who truly wanna help each other and, um, are so readily available and so willing to help each other out.

[00:00:39] A lot of times people look at franchising and they see these really large brands, um, and corporations and they think that's franchising. "It's just corporate." And, um, "I'm going to have to answer to this team. I can't be myself. It's not actually my business." And there's a lot of myths around it. But I don't, what people don't realize is franchising is made up of, of people and made up of individuals. And those people have each other's backs. Those people want to help each other out. You have franchises who have been in business for years and years now offering their time. Um, sometimes their money, resources to help more emerging brands, just getting started brands. Um, and you can see that there's these franchisors who have a wealth of knowledge and who have a lot of experience under their belt. They're so willing to share that information.

[00:01:52] There's plenty of events within franchising, where you can see this actually happening in front of you. Um, people connect, franchisors who've been in the business for so long willingly sharing information, What to do, What not to do, Things that they wish they had done better and they do it just, they, they just do it naturally.

[00:02:15] So again, me just talking about how much I love franchising, but there's, there's this massive community of people who are willing to help each other. And that is something that a lot of people see. So I encourage, uh, people to look into what franchising is and, and take a deeper dive on all levels, not just as a franchisee, but actually working within franchise brands, working inside franchise organizations. And there's a lot of great opportunity, great connections to be had.

[00:00:00] Melissa Pang: Authentic is a word that gets thrown around a lot. It's kind of a buzzword these days where everyone's claiming to be authentic. That's what people are looking for. You look at social media content creators, um, just across the board and you know, it can kind get lost in all of the.. buzz around it. Um, but what I do, I, I connect with people. I create relationships. I build relationships, I strengthen relationships and what I was noticing as I've done some presentations over the past few days. And as I create content for, um, different platforms, um, podcasts, LinkedIn people connect with people. This is not groundbreaking by any means, but I just wanna bring attention to the fact that if you are true to your personality, your values, what you believe in, and that comes through in your interactions with people, it's just so much easier to build connection and build community with people and they're looking for that authenticity. It's true, despite it being a buzzword, that's really what people are craving these days. They want the real Melissa, they want the real person. Um, who's maybe behind the camera. Um, who's on the Zoom call, who they are talking to. Uh, they really wanna hear your voice.

[00:01:33] And so that could even come out as you know, your inflection, how you're saying things, putting a little bit of your own personality into the different things that you're doing throughout the day, whether it's just touch base calls or the Zoom call or the Podcast, the Content Creation, the Video. That's what people are gonna connect with and they'll hear what you have to say so much clearer if they feel like they're actually hearing it from you as a real person and not a maybe scripted or canned version.

[00:02:05] So again, this isn't anything groundbreaking, but just a good reminder to stay authentic and stay true to who you are and, um, yeah, don't be afraid to let that side of you show, uh, both personally, but also professionally. Uh, you can create some, uh, great connections that way, meaningful connections.

Melissa Pang: You know what I realized?... is a lot of times people stay in one spot, whether that's just in general, like in life, in a physical place, in a job, because that's all they've ever known. And it's really hard to kind of coax yourself to leave your comfort zone. And so I think a lot of times people feel stuck because they don't see maybe they're unhappy where they currently are, or they have this kind of, uh, feeling like, oh, there's something more like, there's something more that I wanna do or want to achieve, or I wanna go see this certain place, but there's something holding them back.

And I think that's... it's just like it's people's comfort zone and it can be really hard to coach yourself to get out of your comfort zone. Um, that's a pretty big mind game to play with yourself. And I've talked to a lot of my, um, friends or, or, you know, people, um, in my life who maybe are feeling that way, feeling stuck.

And it's interesting because they don't... maybe see that there's actually, they have a lot of options. They have a lot of opportunities, but they're limiting themselves. Um, because they just, they just don't know. Um, what else is out there. And maybe they're a bit scared to take the leap or take the step. And you know what else too, is people, a lot of times feel like:

"Okay, it's all or nothing. If I wanna make a change, it's gonna be the biggest change in the world. And it's going to affect my entire life. Everything I know as, as it is right now is going to change."

And that's not necessarily the case either. Sometimes it's just taking, it can even just be researching something like I want to, let's say you wanna move to a different city.

That doesn't mean you have to literally the next day move to the, a new city. You can Google things about the place. You can do some research, you can educate yourself about some different options. It doesn't just have to be one. You can look at a few different things. Nothing's holding you to make a decision at that point.

You're just seeing what else is out there. And I think when people take off all the pressure to make decisions and take off all the pressure of wow, massive life change, this has to be like the complete, do a complete 180, um, to get out of where I am right now. Um, once you kind of figure out that that is not the case, um, it just opens up so many more possibilities.

It's just small little steps, um, looking into different things and... that actually is, I wish more people, um, were able to see things that way, because then you don't feel stuck. You start to see things as not glass half empty, but glass half full. Like what else is out there and what can I do? What can I myself do to learn more about it? See what else is out there.

[00:00:00] Melissa Pang: Career Ownership is something that sounds kind of nice, but when you actually think about it, what does that mean? Career Ownership is something I've talked to friends about. I've talked to coworkers, other people in the franchising industry. They don't even know that they're talking about Career Ownership and it got me thinking.

[00:00:18] This is something that applies to everyone. This isn't just for clients of the Entrepreneur's Source. This isn't just for our Coaches. It actually can apply to anyone. So Career Ownership, why is it so important? Because the more that I think about it, the more excited I get about helping other people realize they can take ownership of their career.

[00:00:43] So for example, I was talking to one of my friends, she's in a job just normal eight to five. And for a long time, she hated it. She didn't like the hours, she felt stifled, she felt like she couldn't move, or there weren't promotions to be had. She didn't see room for growth and she felt she was, she was gonna be stuck at that same place forever.

[00:01:09] And then finally, one day she said, "Melissa, I applied to another job. I actually got it. And now I'm doing things that. I've been wanting to for a really long time. I have these different opportunities. I've been given a lot of responsibility." Again it's not like we talked about, wow, congrats on taking ownership of your career, but that's exactly what she was doing.

[00:01:27] And I've also spoken to other people in the franchising community who have been doing franchise development for years. And then we had a conversation and they said, "Melissa, I actually don't know if that's what I wanna keep doing. I love this space, but I feel like there's something more, um, that I can do and maybe use my skills for in a different way."

[00:01:47] So I'm open to learning about other things that are out there, whether that's becoming a franchisee or maybe investing in some different companies or starting to actually look at the franchisor side of it and help a brand grow in a different way. And again, it's not, we didn't specifically speak about, wow, this is you taking ownership of your career, but it's just so interesting to me to see that mindset shift.

[00:02:14] It can happen with anyone. And it's really exciting because when you take ownership of your career, you can see people start to, they, they feel empowered and they feel like, "Wow, there's a lot more out there that I could be doing." So if you're out there and you're thinking, ah, I don't know if I, I don't know if I, this is what I wanna do forever, I don't know if I love where I currently am, whether you're a business owner or you're in a job, you can take ownership of your career at whatever stage you're in, wherever you are at. And all it takes is having that open mind, looking at what else is possible and looking at the things that can change. Just having that mindset shift is so exciting to see. So, so if you're out there and you're thinking, ah, I don't know if this is what I wanna do or I'm not sure if this is where I want to stay for the rest of my life. That's an awesome place to start, Career Ownership™. You can take ownership of your career wherever you are at whatever stage you're in.

[00:00:00] Melissa Pang: Why Coaching?? It's something we talk about all the time at the Entrepreneur's Source, in general, it's just a part of my everyday vernacular. And what about if you were to look at coaching in this way, coaching can help individuals become the heroes of their own journey. The last time we heard about the hero's journey was probably like an English class in 10th grade. But it applies in today's world as well.

[00:00:30] Like when I think about coaching, I think about the hero's journey. The heroes has this call to adventure and they embark on this journey and they head into unknown uncharted waters. And oftentimes there's a guide on the way they meet different individuals who are helping them kind of navigate through this unknown, um, through this unknown territory and helping this person get to a point of revelation where they all of a sudden, you know, come to understand something new, they learn, they acquire new knowledge, they achieve some kind of, some level of transformation, and then they can return back to where they were. But they're a new person. They can return back to where they are, but they have acquired something on that journey, whether it's, yeah, again, knowledge or sometimes, you know, this object or whatever it is. So it's a hero's journey. How can a coach help along that way? How can a coach helps an individual become the hero of their own journey?

[00:01:32] I think a lot of times people don't even realize that they are on a hero's journey. People don't understand that they can be the hero. And so they're just kind of going along, um, going with the flow and. You know, nothing's changing and maybe they're wanting change, but they don't know how to get there. A coach can help someone navigate through that unknown territory and help that person get from one step to the next, to the next and move forward and figure out, okay, which path do I wanna go on? Where's the right way to go? How do I even get the education? How do I get the knowledge? How do I achieve, um, you know, and complete this mission or whatever it is, a coach can be instrumental in that. And so. If you are working with individuals, whether that's clients, candidates just in general, and you are the kind of that mentor and guide for someone, how can you help them become the hero of their own journey so that they can reach that point of revelation or transformation? That's gonna be life changing for them, probably their family. Friends and that can change the entire course of their future. So it's no small thing when there is coaching involved and being able to help someone go from, um, point a from their 1.0 to their 2.0.

I work at a company called The Entrepreneur's Source®. And we as a company definitely have a pretty niche take on what it means to own your own business. So much so that we actually spend more time talking about Career Ownership than we do business ownership.

You see, to become a top notch business owner, especially in franchising, it's important that you first make the choice to take back ownership of your career because owning a franchise is no easy task, with it comes a lot of freedom but also it's your responsible to make it happen. Yes there will be support along the way and that's the beauty of franchising you get to learn from others that have come before you. But at the end of the day it's all on you. Once you're your own boss, there's no where else to point fingers. Sounds kinda scary, right? But it's also empowering. Once you choose for it to be.

Even if it seems difficult at first, letting go of your past winning formula is often exactly what you need to do in order to get to the next level.

It might feel like, "Hey, this is not my unique ability." But taking ownership is what can allow you to solve problems, even if that is true.
