THE NELMS BROTHERS, filmmakers Eshom Nelms and Ian Nelms, grew up in central California waging two-hundred-man G.I. Joe wars and dreaming in John Ford landscapes. Though their evolving passions temporarily took them in different directions – Ian first went to college on a wrestling scholarship, along the way discovering an interest for English Literature, and Eshom pursued an education in fine art, but then found the illustration of comic books better suited his tastes - the two would always find themselves returning to their love of film.

The Nelms Brothers have written and directed numerous award-winning and critically acclaimed films. With each of their endeavors exuding a unique look and feel, the Nelms Brothers are known for their ability to traverse from one genre to another, seamlessly, from drama to comedy to thrillers. Their film, LOST ON PURPOSE (2013), was a heartfelt coming-of-age love letter to their small hometown. From there, the siblings wrote and directed WAFFLE STREET (2015), a comedic turn based on an autobiographical memoir about a billion-dollar hedge-fund manager turned waffle house server starring James Lafferty and Danny Glover. Their film, SMALL TOWN CRIME (2018) is a crime thriller that premiered at SXSW and BFI London Film Festival and received positive reviews by top critics upon its theatrical release. It featured a stellar ensemble cast that included John Hawkes, Anthony Anderson, Octavia Spencer, Robert Forster, Clifton Collins Jr., Michael Vartan, and Caity Lotz. Their next film, FATMAN (2020), starred Mel Gibson, Walton Goggins, and Marianne Jean- Baptiste, and centers on a neglected and precocious 12-year-old who hires an unorthodox hitman to kill Santa Claus after receiving a

lump of coal in his stocking.

In January 2021,” Everyone is Doing Great,” a comedy television series created by actors/producers James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti and executive produced by the Nelms Brothers, was acquired and released by Hulu (U.S.) and Paramount+ (international territories). In 2022, in addition to executive producing season two of “Everyone is Doing Great”, the Nelms Brothers directed the feature RED RIGHT HAND, starring Orlando Bloom, Andie MacDowell and Garret Dillahunt.

This is a very personal project that he has dedicated his life to. Kevin has been making films ever since he was an overweight eight-year-old and learned early (at 11 years old) that he had a possible future of developing type 2 diabetes. So he started learning about his food and health the best way he knew how: through using his video camera. He made his first food documentary projects in middle school and is still making films today.

Meet Michael Horton, LACPUG's visionary founder. Since 2000, he shaped LA's editing scene through the Final Cut Pro User Group, later the Creative Pro User Group. Tailored for scripted editors, it's a hub for networking, 'Stump the Gurus' Q&A, and a panel of editors unraveling show secrets and editing insights.

Michael Horton had been an actor in Los Angeles for over 25 years. During that time he appeared in over 150 network television shows, a dozen films, many Movies of the Week and over 1500 radio and TV commercials.

Shortly after Apple announced the new NLE Final Cut Pro (2000) Horton decided that it was indeed time to plunge into the world of digital filmmaking because, yes, what he really wanted to do was direct. So he went out and mortgaged his families future on a FCP NLE system and a VX1000 camcorder and did just that. With not a lot of success.

During all this, he founded the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group, which presently has over 3000 members world wide. The name changed to the LA Creative Pro User Group in 2012. Horton was also the Co-Producer of the famous “SuperMeets” held for a number of years in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Amsterdam, London, NYC, Austin, and Boston.

She studied music and double-majored in physics at the University of California at San Diego for her undergraduate degree, and then pursued graduate music study at King's College London. To pay the bills, she worked as a computer programmer for financial analysts and traders while in LA and then in London, but her heart was always in music. She and her husband have two cheeky monkeys, one bonkers spaniel, and five singing chickens in Scotland near St Andrews.
Rebecca's experience working in the high-pressure arena of finance gives her a unique professional edge, while her adaptability to change, a requirement of living the Army life, makes her easy to work with. Delivering passionately created music, to spec and on time; is her aim.

In this episode, we explore the literal journey to making the documentary Arrowhead with filmmaker Janey McGill. She shares the journey of walking the empty quarter over 28 days and the bond from it.  Arrowhead is about three ordinary women, one British and two Omani, who embark on a grueling expedition to become the first modern women to cross the vast stretch of barren waste in the heart of the Arabian Desert, known as Rub’ al Khali or the Empty Quarter.

Janey McGill is an explorer with a legal and military background. She suffered a life-altering injury in a horse racing accident and subsequent loss of career and purpose. Overcoming this adversity and feeling a distinct lack of belonging outside of the military sparked her desire to challenge boundaries and explore beyond them. She is passionate about leading physically, culturally, and socially challenging expeditions around the globe. 'Her Faces of Change' marked her first group expedition, which set out not only to become the first all-female expedition across The Empty Quarter, but to promote cultural understanding behind the rallying cry of "better together". Arrowhead is Janey's first film.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the documentary The Gibraltar Project with filmmaker Rosita Laila.

"The Gibraltar Project" is a feature documentary with a global perspective; it dives into the issues of abortion access and reproductive justice in Gibraltar and the USA and juxtaposes the two. As art so often imitates life, the story has evolved as events on the ground have unfolded in real-time. We have been fortunate enough to have been there to witness it and capture it. The documentary started as a journey diving into the quest to decriminalize abortion in Gibraltar and, recently the criminalization of abortion sweeping across the US; as such, it's unveiled the cracks of democracy and asks us, "are we now witnessing the unraveling of democracy"? Is there a way forward? Drawing upon my own cultural roots (from the UK, Spain, Gibraltar, and Iran), the journey has most recently led us to the story of Iran and the first female led revolution unfolding before our eyes - all tied back together in a fascinating journey examining the zeitgeist of the modern-day "emergence of the feminine" we are experiencing throughout global societies today.

In this episode, we will explore the life of a SAG hand model Ashly Covington. She spoke about the precision and skill needed on the production and talent side. It's not an easy task structuring the movements without marks. There is a movement for the camera one needs to be able to nail take after take. And holding positions for long periods without shaking.

SAG Hand Model & VO Artist

Walk through any store, and you will see Ashly Covington’s hands on everything from the product packaging of Reynolds Wrap and Hamilton Beach to book covers for Eat This! Not That! Series. Turn on the TV, and you can catch Ashly’s hands pouring bottles of Miller Lite, scrubbing toilets for Lysol, or making pies for Pillsbury. Ashly’s hands have appeared in numerous magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Vogue, InStyle, and O Magazine. She has been the celebrity hand for Brooke Shields, Charlize Theron, Adrianna Lima, and, oddly enough, Andy Samberg.

Growing up in Virginia, Ashly’s first love was acting, and she started pursuing her dream at a young age. When she was 12, she landed a spot as one of the co-stars for the Saturday afternoon children’s TV show WTVR TV 6’s For Kid Sake Ambassadors, where she learned about public speaking and news broadcasting. Ashly acted with Virginia Commonwealth University’s Theatre with Children for Children program and in many productions throughout her high school and college years. Ashly attended James Madison University, where she was active as a Theatre Major working in all areas of production, from lighting & costume design to directing. As an actress at JMU, Ashly played a wide range of characters, including Arkadina in The Seagull, Climene in School for Wives, and (her favorite) Lady Nannycoo in The Frog Prince. After college, Ashly planned to pursue acting, but then a local agent noticed her hands. The agent suggested a place for Ashly to experience her very first manicure and, within a few weeks, booked her a job at Wintergreen Resort. Quickly, Ashly’s career as a hand model began to take off. Ashly later found out that she was, in fact, a Legacy hand model – following in the footsteps of her grandmother, whose long and graceful fingers had shown off typewriters ads in the 1930s.

In this episode, we will explore the life of Cris Graves, a producer, director, writer, editor, and podcaster. She is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker for The Amazing Race. She’s spent much of her time as a producer on reality TV shows like Made In Mexico, Living Undocumented, Deadly Cults, and Breaking Big, among others. She also has found time in her busy schedule to fit in directing four short films, of which she was the writer of three of them. And is now working on her first feature, Alone Girl, which was a semi-finalist in three categories of the Austin Film Festival Screenplay competition in 2019. She was chosen as one of 25 screenwriters to watch by the Austin Film Festival.

I’m an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker who has worked across platforms from film to television to online content. My work has spanned the globe as a producer/director, filming in some of our planet's harshest and most remote areas. My credits include The Amazing Race, Whale Wars, and Living Undocumented. I’m also an award-winning narrative filmmaker, and my projects have been screened in various film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival, Oaxaca Film Festival, and Hamilton Film Festival, to name a few. My feature film script ALONE GIRL was a semi-finalist in three categories of the Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition 2019, as well as earning a spot on The Bitch List 2020 and it was in the top 10% of the 2020 Nicholl Fellowship. Also, in 2020, I was chosen as one of 25 screenwriters to watch by the Austin Film Festival. Most recently, I’ve launched a podcast called Blissful Spinster that is documenting my journey as I hustle to get Alone Girl made and can be found anywhere pods stream.

On a more personal note, I’m the youngest of six and a proud Gen-Xer born in 1970 in New Hampshire but soon found myself being moved to Mexico City, Mexico, at the tender age of one, where I lived until I was almost 19. This makes me what some term a “third culture kid”… it also means I never quite feel like I fit in… no matter where I am, I’m a perpetual fish out of the water, and I love it. It means I’m in a constant state of learning and curiosity… and that is a beautiful place to be. Now that I’m a certain age, I’ve turned my curiosity inward. I’m writing scripts to direct that explore how I, a single woman in her 50s (with cats!) fit in the world made to disregard our place in society… don’t worry, I make comedies! I live in Los Angeles with my three cats – Jack, Bobby & Chadwick Pawsman.

Dan R. Cheatham II

Producer / Assistant Director / Stunt Coordinator / Armorer / Equestrian / Stunts / Actor / Props

A multifaceted talent and manager with a broad international career, Dan Cheatham II has

balanced his time between his European and American acting-filmmaking career and his active business life in marketing and executive management. After the university, Dan moved to Europe and worked in the international pre-press and reprography markets in worldwide product management and marketing for Linotype-Hell AG and Canon Deutschland GmbH. In this episode, we are talking about the role of the field producer with Justine Liese and her husband, Paul Matyasovsky. Justine started her career in post-production on Alaska the Last Frontier and went on to story producer on shows like The zoo: San Diego, 9 Months with Courteney Cox, and Leah Remini: It's All Relative. Her husband Paul has worked his way up from Production Assistant to field Producer on SyFy’s Ghost Hunters to Supervising Producer on National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna & Wicked Tuna Outer Banks and recently moved into Post Production for the show.

Justine Liese

I started to get the itch to be in entertainment when I was just a high school kid, as I observed my mentor (my mom - Sharon Liese) create an amazing documentary series where she was filming kids AT my high school, which ended up airing on WEtv. After I graduated, I went to Kentucky University, where I minored in TV, Film, and media studies. Once I graduated from KU, I went to New York City to work on my first reality show, then moved out to LA only ten years ago. I’ve worked on several types of unscripted series, including comedy, competition, docu-follows, and much more. In working on set, I grew a love for story-telling and wanted to expand my skills. So about four years into my career, I pursued my first job in post, as an AP on a popular show (Alaska the Last Frontier). I then fell in love with the art of story-telling in post-production as well and started bouncing back and forth ever since. Because of covid, I feel particularly fortunate to have secured jobs remotely over the last few years producing in the post. I’ve been working my up, starting out as an intern for Al Roker in NYC, to PAing on many sets all over the world, to now being a Supervising Producer both in the field and post.

As much as I love my career, one of these jobs also leads me to the greatest gift in my life… My husband, Paul. We were working on set, producing a NatGeo series Wicked Tuna Outer Banks. We worked hard each and every day and became close friends, which later turned into more, and I couldn’t be more thankful to have had him as a producing partner in the field.

Paul Matyasovsky

Unlike most in the industry, I’ve spent my entire 14-year career working for the same company, working my way up from Production Assistant to Field Producer on SyFy’s Ghost Hunters from 2008-2013 and then from Senior Field Producer to Supervising Producer on National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna & Wicked Tuna Outer Banks from 2013-2020 before switching over to Post on Wicked Tuna in January of 2021. Growing up in suburban Connecticut, I didn’t see a career in Film or TV as at all realistic, and if it were not for a series of fortunate encounters during my senior year of college at Providence College (Go Friars) my life would look a whole lot different today.

Fortunately, God, fate, or unbelievable luck, opened the right doors for me. Only seven weeks after graduating from college in the summer of 2008, I got a job as a Production Assistant and never looked back. While my resume is not nearly as diverse as many, I have worked consistently for 14 years on popular shows that people continue to want more of. As I sit here and write this, Wicked Tuna is airing its Season 11 finale as Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks Showdown gets ready to premier its 9th season next Sunday (9/8c on National Geographic!)

After getting engaged, it was very important to me not to spend my life on the road anymore. Thanks to a couple of great executives at my company, I could transition into Post Production at the beginning of last year. While I look back fondly on my time on the field, I couldn’t be happier to now be on the back end, where I still get to contribute to the Wicked Tuna franchise in a meaningful way but also get to be home with my wife and dog - the one and only Mister Rigatoni.

In this episode, I interview Ebony Roberts, the creator and director of United We Heal Film Festival. This festival screens dynamic cutting-edge short films that amplify marginalized voices, raises awareness, and deliver authentic storytelling.

Ever since Ebony Roberts watched ‘Back to the Future’ at age 7, she was intrigued by the film. From then, she knew she wanted to leave her mark in the world of film and television. From a 7-year-old dreamer, she continued her journey to the silver screen by obtaining a degree in Communications/Broadcasting from the University of Pittsburgh. Shortly after earning her degree, she and her sisters combined their love of travel and production to create a web series called ‘Global Lipstick’. This Bourdain-esk web series showcased the sisters' carefree, comedic spirit as well as their creative genius. From that endeavor, Ebony and her sisters formed a production company where they empowered businesses through visual media. While working with her independent production company, Ebony was given an opportunity to work for QVC, the home shopping channel. She took that opportunity and is currently an Associate Producer on the studio broadcast team. In the year 2020, in the wake of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, Ebony knew she had to use her creative energy to promote unity in the Black community. That creative energy spawned her latest project and the one she is most proud of to date, entitled United We Heal. Whether it's producing, directing, or writing, Ebony continues to attempt to leave her mark on the television and film industry by constantly striving for excellence. Her latest project is a social justice film festival highlighting filmmakers of color who have films that amplify an issue, prompt healing, and uplift their community. This shorts festival is named after her short film, United We Heal.

Koura Linda is an Independent Filmmaker and Entrepreneur. As a Writer/Producer/Director Koura founded Space Dream Productions in 2013, releasing her first major film project in 2016 with her husband, Spaceship, a Musician and Filmmaker.

Space Dream Productions is an independent film and music production company grounded in the idea that storytellers are ambassadors of humanity, tasked with sharing pieces of ourselves with each other. Filmmakers have the added responsibility of creating visual worlds around these stories. For this reason, Koura & Spaceship focuses on films that not only entertain but also aim to showcase pieces of humanity - all pieces of humanity not just "edgy" indie or simply uplifting but everything in between.

The mission of Space Dream Productions is to amplify genuine pieces of life that may not always be front and center in large studio projects and to elevate hard-working exceptional artists in music and film.

Since September 2016, over 50 projects have moved (or are moving) through Space Dream Productions. About 30 completed projects have received over 50 film festival acceptances internationally. In this episode, we explore the job of the editor and making seamless cuts so the audience is never taken out of the film experience. My guest is editor Gregg Stouffer, who edited the award-winning documentary Mary Janes: The Women of Weed, as well as, reality TV shows Making Monsters, Building Alaska, and Monogamy. He was also one of the editors for the Beijing Olympic Winter Games 2022 and most recently A Long Match a feature film documentary on Filipinos in World War II.

Gregg has done darn near everything in production. His career was off to a ripping start at the age of 15 when he won his first festival title and has continued over the years with other accolades including awards from MTV, Emmy, and Telly. He has been pecked by angry chickens while on set for Willie Nelson and set lions loose on a car lot with an NFL quarterback. Yes, in his career he has worked on countless productions in film and television, but all antics aside, he is most revered for his acumen in storytelling through directing and editing. To say that Gregg is a visionary is the least that could be said. And he does a killer Wookie impersonation.

How do you incorporate gender parity, social justice, and environmental sustainability into your work and the growth of your business/organization?

I have always longed for a day — to paraphrase the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. — that we will all be judged by the content of our character, and not by the content of our undergarments.

In this episode, I interview the talented comedic actor Beto Ochoa on his skit Beto Bananas.

Beto Ochoa

Beto Ochoa is a comedian and actor who has acted in the Scream marketing campaign and has 2 million views on his own video on TikTok. Other than naming his accomplishments, he's a pretty cool guy and says funny things every now and then. His step-dad used to think he looked like Elvis. He can play guitar decently too, but don't ask him to play a whole song because he only knows the cool parts of the songs, like that beginning riff in "banana pancakes" by Jack Johnson, but it's only ever that beginning riff. Nothing else.

We will be discussing once you made your film now what? Guest Robby Kendall talks about his LGBTQ film Drag Queens Must Die and what he did to promote his film.

Born in Florida and raised in the Southeast, Robby Kendall grew up as that "unique child" who 'thought outside the box''.

Early on, Kendall's creative writing was selected by his classroom teachers as samples of stories that were 'different', perhaps odd. In high school, Kendall began to explore his identity (as a gay male) as well as the 'life of someone else' through Theatre. He thought Theatre might be a path for him, but was greatly discouraged to explore a career in Theatre. So, he put his writing and interest in Theatre aside to pursue a career in Psychology, something that became natural to him ~ understanding human behavior.

After college and early in his career as a Psychologist, Kendall delved back into Theatre and vowed to support the local LGBTQ+ communities by producing and creating fundraisers for non-profit organizations and unique variety shows and game shows. During this time, Kendall found the 'Drag Queen' within and developed his persona "Sweet Nothing", who began to make waves herself. With the success of these one-time events and the notoriety of Ms. Sweet Nothing, Kendall decided to GO BIGGER. So, in the early 2000s, Kendall produced and co-starred in his staged Gay Soap Opera series "Victoria Place", a live, episodic series that made waves in South Florida. In that show, Kendall played Baby Doll Gibbons, an entitled gay from Alabama who found his identity as an infamous Drag Queen. With the success of "Victoria Place", Kendall was encouraged by local critics to pursue a career in the Entertainment Industry. He then relocated to Los Angeles, but did not have 'a name', an investor, or an agent to support his path. So, he decided to establish himself in California as a Psychologist and then begin to produce more works from his creative mind in the Bay Area. Some of these works included: "My Big Queer Quiz Show" (game show), "Kendall's Shorts" (an evening of one-acts co-hosted by his own mother), and "Billy's Showcase" (a visual/ performing arts show).

During the Pandemic, Kendall experienced some personal trauma that brought down his creative energy and motivation to pursue anything further. But within a month, the voices of characters from "Victoria Place" began to wake him at night demanding a life of their own. So, to shut them up, Kendall dug deep into his creative mind, found his motivation, and rebooted "Victoria Place" as a virtual production ~ an illustrated podcast. During the run of the new and improved "Victoria Place", Kendall was contacted by other creative folks and filmmakers through social media commending him for his work and expressing desire to work with him on a project. One of these filmmakers is his Cinematographer from Drag Queens Must Die!

Currently, Kendall is in post-production of his second short film "The Other Side of Eden: A Modern Testament". He has also recently launched an innovative in-person production "Fishnets and Film", which combines a Drag Show with a Private Screening of a short LGBTQ+ film.
