If you spend a lot of time on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, you may have wondered whether upgrading your webcam is actually worth the investment.
In this week's episode of The 5-Minute Business Boost, Sam shares her experience upgrading from a basic HD 1080p webcam to the iContact Pro after delivering more online workshops, mentoring sessions and webinars.
This isn't a technical review filled with camera specifications. It's a practical look at whether better video quality and natural eye contact can help build stronger relationships with clients online.
Sam also shares where business owners should spend their money first before investing in premium camera equipment.
In this episode you'll discover:
• Why a $50 webcam was enough for years.
• What changed as more of Sam's business moved online.
• How the iContact Pro creates more natural eye contact during video meetings.
• Whether an iPhone might already be the best camera you own.
• The order you should upgrade your lighting, audio and camera equipment.
The biggest lesson isn't about buying new technology it's about investing in equipment that supports the way your business has evolved.
As always, this isn't about having the fanciest setup. It's about communicating better, building trust and making a stronger impression online.

Have you ever wondered why some new products and services take off while others quietly disappear?
In this episode of The 5-Minute Business Boost, Sam Hicks shares a simple five-stage framework that has helped some of the world's biggest brands develop successful products—and shows how small business owners can use exactly the same thinking.

• Spot opportunities your customers are already telling you about
• Turn observations into new products or services
• Test ideas before investing too much time or money
• Develop and refine your offer with confidence
• Launch new products without feeling overwhelmed

• How one photo can become ten pieces of marketing.
• The difference between repurposing content for businesses and community groups.

What can a fabric retailer and a barbecue chain teach small business owners?
Quite a lot, actually.
Inspired by recent commentary from Scott Phillips on the challenges facing Lincraft and Barbecues Galore, this episode explores what happens when customer behaviour changes, technology reshapes industries and business models reach a tipping point.
In this episode, Sam discusses:
• Why customers are always voting with their wallets
• How small declines in sales can have a major impact on profitability
• The difference between temporary setbacks and structural change
• Why technology is influencing every industry, not just retail
• How flexibility and diversification create resilience
• The opportunities available to regional businesses in a digital world
Sometimes the most valuable business lessons come from watching what happens to companies much larger than our own.
The question is simple:
Are you skating to where the puck is going, or are you still standing where it used to be?
Thanks to Scott Phillips for the inspiration behind this episode and for highlighting the broader conversation around change, adaptation and the future of Australian business.

In this episode Sam is diving into marketing plans, even the ones scribbled on the back of a napkin.
Because here’s the truth: any plan, no matter how simple or messy, is better than no plan at all.
Why does it matter?
A marketing plan gives you direction and focus. It stops you from spinning your wheels, guessing what to do next, or feeling overwhelmed by all the marketing options out there. The golden rule? Done is better than perfect.
Start where you are, with whatever you have, a napkin, a note on your phone, or a quick sketch on paper.

In today's episode, Sam is speaking about how you are more than just a logo
Branding is often reduced to a logo, a colour scheme, or a well-designed website. But real branding goes deeper—it’s how you conduct yourself, how people experience you, and how they feel after an interaction with you.
As a small business owner, you are your brand. Whether you’re at work, attending an event, engaging online, or simply out in the community, your actions shape how people perceive you and your business.

In this episode Sam is discussing "What happens to your social media and devices when you die?"
We rarely think about it, but our social media accounts and devices often outlive us.
If you run a business, your online presence—whether on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or other platforms—can become a question mark when you’re no longer here to manage it. The same applies to smartphones, tablets, and computers, many of which hold important business and personal data.
An early disclaimer, this episode Sam talks about death based on personal experiences both with loved ones, clients and friends.
So if this is not for you at this time, you may find another episode that will work for you this week.

Taking good notes can make all the difference when running a business or an organisation.
Whether you need to capture key points from meetings, create action items, or record discussions, note-taking apps can save time and improve efficiency.
But with so many options available, how do you choose the right one?
Sam chats about investing in one and the options, both free and paid.
Lets get cracking...

Now I get it; it’s not for everyone, the marketing or the movie, but let's chat about the lessons learned.
Let's see what Marvel / Disney's latest release gave us as far as takeaways for small businesses.

Small businesses must find efficient ways to communicate with their customers. We have social media; we have emails, and we have text, but what about looking at our websites?
For me, the website must do most of the heavy lifting. Whether it’s a glorified landing page, a site of 5 pages, or 12 it needs to be able to help with the user experience.
So how can we add to it and create additional UX, save potential clients time, save you time, and work on that credibility aspect that websites give us and Google needs as part of great SEO?
A FAQ page, that’s how. So tune in to listen to 5 reasons why!

In this episode, Sam catches up with Tamara Simon; speaker, author, and coach.
Affectionately known as Australia’s small business answer to Bob the Builder (can she fix it, yes she can), Tamara is driven by curiosity, change, and simplicity.
For over 25 years, she’s been helping owners repair, renovate, and rebuild their often expensive hobbies and dysfunctional workplaces into simple, profitable small businesses they actually love.
And that’s why she wrote her first business book, The Five Little Business Pigs which uses the analogy of The Three Little Pigs fairy-tale because that’s how we build our small businesses.
When Tamara is not coaching, speaking, or writing, you’ll find her fully immersed in her other passion: sports, which includes being an unapologetic member of the Hawthorn AFL Club.
We won't hold that against her... So tune in to hear her passion, successes, and milestones which we can all learn from.
Tamara's webinar this month ( she runs 2 per month ) is being held on Thursday 25th July 2024: 12pm – 1pm QLD Time and is titled - Are Your People Falling Through The Cracks?

Online, sharing your personal story has become more powerful and accessible than ever. Whether it's through social media platforms, email newsletters (EDMs), blogs, or other digital avenues, telling your story can create meaningful connections and foster a sense of community.
However, with the vast amount of content being shared online, it can be challenging to stand out and genuinely connect with your audience.

For 24 years, living on our cattle farm in rural Victoria meant a constant struggle with internet access.
Telstra Black Spot, thanks to the valleys around us, has turned simple tasks like making a call or checking email into frustrating ordeals.
We endured years of unreliable landlines – especially bad in winter with waterlogged pits—then slow ADSL, and finally, the limitations of satellite internet.
So grab a cuppa and listen to our journey. I hope it inspires you not to give up and to seek solace in a supportive group.

On a side note, Megan and her husband Marty survived the 2009 bushfires, and they both continue to inspire those around them with their ability to be so damn resilient—they never gave up.
Megan's ability to just get on with it is amazing.
There is a photo of them both walking away from the camera after the biggest fight of their lives on that fateful day and night on February 7 2009 it resonates strongly with me on how far our communities have come after that time.

In this episode, I'm chatting about stepping outside your comfort zone as a business owner.
Stepping outside one's comfort zone is an invaluable character-building experience for small business owners. In the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship, where adaptability and resilience are key, embracing new challenges fosters personal and professional growth.
Operating a small business demands a diverse skill set, and willingly venturing beyond familiar territories sharpens these skills, promoting versatility in decision-making and problem-solving.
So why would I do this??
