Playstation's Summer 2023 showcase may not have lived up to the insane levels of hype leading up to it but there were some fantastic games shown at this event and we wanted to give Bronze, Silver, and Gold Trophies to the game announcements!

In this one, we talked about nearly every game shown at the event but each awarded our top three games before getting into the rest of the games. We all agreed Spiderman 2 was the game of the show so consider it the Platinum Trophy award winner. The Plucky Squire, Metal Gear Solid Remake, Dragon's Dogma 2, Marathon, Alan Wake 2, Phantom Blade Zero, Sword of the Sea, Helldivers 2, and Assassin's Creed: Mirage were all trophies winners but i wont spoil which trophies they received!

Mortal Kombat 1 is the newest installment in developer Netherrealm Studios' legendary fighting game franchise. Following the time shifting events of Mortal Kombat 11 the company decided to reboot the franchise in a natural way by sending Liu Kang back in time to bring the series back to its roots.

In this episode Murley and Eric discuss MK1's September 19th, 2023 release date and how this game will fit into the gaming release schedule considering it is releasing within the month of huge games like Playstation's Spiderman 2 and Xbox and Bethesda's Starfield, and is also releasing within the release year of the other two most popular games in the fighting game genre (Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8).

There are tons of questions surrounding this game and we will likely get many answers as Summer Game Fest announcements and showcases play out but we wanted to dive into speculation about specifics such as how big the fighter roster will be? How many new fighters could we see in mortal kombat 1? Will the gameplay look very different from MK11? Is the story going to take us back to the classic Mortal Kombat tournament?

We also delve into other conversation such as the recently revealed cameo fighters mechanic, leaked dlc fighters (including Amazon's The Boys' Homelander and Invincible's Omni-Man), how the story reboot will play out, and what changes need to be made to make the game feel new such as new modes or a different approach to the Krypt.

We've now had the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for more than 10 days and it is a smash hit. In this episode the Absurdly Nerd crew give their impressions, praise and criticism of Nintendo's new fastest selling game after roughly 20 hours spent in game a piece. We believe TotK is a true masterpiece and complimented the breadth of brilliant mechanics introduced including the extremely deep building system and how systems like the ascend ability and rewind are so masterfully woven into the fabric of the game world. This is sort of our early review of Tears of the Kingdom but we're much too early in this massive experience so take it with a grain of salt.

Xbox is in need of a win and hopefully they can deliver a huge showcase in June for Summer Games Fest. Phil Spencer has done a great job with damage control but fans are still restless about the state of their console's exclusive portfolio. 

Microsoft has accumulated a massive group of first-party developers to work on Xbox exclusive titles and in this podcast we try to piece together what this event will end up looking like. Aside from Starfield releasing this September we have very little concrete info about what is to come.

Questions about the release schedule... When will Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 release? When will AVOWED release? When will Contraband release?

Questions about new games from studios we haven't heard from in a while... Is InXile really working on Fallout: New Vegas? Will The Coalition reveal Gears 6? Is Undead Labs still working on State of Decay 3? Was EVERWILD actually cancelled, and if so what has Rare been working on since?

And lastly, questions about big games of the future.... Is Playground Games' FABLE far along? What about The Initiative's so-called quadruple-A PERFECT DARK game? Will Outer Worlds come out sooner than we expected?

Playstation's upcoming State of Play is intriguing due to how little we know about their road map. This event will likely fill us in on what some of Sony's most prominent developers have been working on. Blue Point, the studio behind highly praised remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls are rumored to be working on a brand new game and it is likely we'll see it revealed at this showcase. Sony Bend Studio has been quiet since Days Gone released to mixed reviews and it feels like time that we see what their next project is. Naughty Dog is currently working on a multiplayer game in the Last of Us universe that may be in the same vein as their previous competitive multiplayer mode Factions and possibly could be more akin to something like Ubisoft's The Division. Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West developer, Guerilla Games, is said to be developing a multiplayer game of their own and we can't wait to see what that actual turns out to be. Could studios like Media Molecule (Dreams) or Team Asobe (Astro's Playroom) be ready to roll out new games? Will PLaystation VR be apart of the presentation in any capacity?

With 2022 wrapping up and Game of the Year being given to Elden Ring at the Game Awards we thought it would be fun to discuss the biggest and best candidates for game of the year 2023. We decided to do this in a comparison format. We pitted each of these games against the consensus prediction for GOTY 2023, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. We believe The sequel to the beloved Breath of the Wild has to greatest likelihood of delivering on the success and majesty of the its predecessor and capturing the most coveted prize in gaming. The award is anything but wrapped up as there are a number of high-powered video game released slated to 2023 that could very well push for the title of the best 2023 video game.

This week the guys on the Absurdly Nerd Podcast the guys discussed the passing of voice-acting legend Kevin Conroy. Conroy voiced many great rolls but the most influential of them all was easily as the best Batman of all time. From Batman: The Animated Series and many of the best Batman animated films to the Batman Arkham series, Kevin Conroy left a mark on millions of comic book fans around the world.

Following that, the three talked about their early impressions and experiences with God Of War Ragnarok. That led to a discussion on "The Feeing of a Huge Video Game Release" and subsequently brought us to "What Was Your Perfect Video Game Launch?"

After that they made their way into a discussion on voice acting in games and tried to cast the best famous personality in a video game voice acting role.

This week Cole and Murley discussed a variety of topics. Modern Warfare 2 released recently so gave their thoughts on the campaign and early impressions of the multiplayer. They also discussed another new release, Gotham Knights, and Cole expressed his disappointment with the game and broke down where it all went wrong.

Then Murley led into the next topic of "Games that got you out of your comfort zone" by talking about a game he has been playing: A Plague Tale Requiem. He made a point about stealth action games not being his style of combat and said that sometimes a games story and delivery can be so good as to make you push through, and even enjoy, combat that you would otherwise avoid. The conversation led to a certain Kojima game and became a perfect transition point into their next topic..

"What Movie Director or Show-runner would you choose to make a game?" was the next topic and the guys had immediate ideas for this one. From a Quentin Tarantino LA Noire style detective game to a Guillermo Del Toro Witcher-like and many more.

Following that, the topic was Which Video Game Would You Like To See Anime From? This was an energetic topic for Cole , who immediately fired off all of the built up anime ideas he had stored. Some of the suggestions from both guys included Halo, Animal Crossing and Legend of Zelda.

The final topic of the show may be a recurring segment. It was called "Video Game God" and the idea is to take control of the video game industry in anyway you like and pick one move that you believe would better a game, series, or developer.

This week Cole and Eric welcomed in the first guest to the Absurdly Nerd Podcast. A big thanks to our buddy Monty McNeil for coming on to discuss all things God Of War!

The guys went in deep on every aspect of God of War, both past and future. They laid out what they believe makes God of War special as a series. They discussed their experiences with the original God of War series and how they view the enormous transition from the old school hack and slash genre into a modern over the shoulder methodical sword and shield action game.

They broke down some of the best moments from God of War 3 including the brutal boss fights and groundbreaking set pieces. They also discussed some of the negatives of the original trilogy such as quick time events and one note writing.

From there they flowed into the modern masterpiece that is God of War (2018). They talked at length about how special the world and story are, shedding light specifically on the brilliant voice acting for Kratos and Baldur as well as the grittiness of the story and combat.

After that they made their way into trailer analysis for God Of War Ragnarok. They broke down the specific moments shown at the most recent state of play that stood out to them. Following that they gave their predictions for Sony Santa Monica's upcoming blockbuster title. They predicted the much anticipated resolutions to the cliffhangers left up in the air at the end of the last game and also gave their opinions on where the series should go following Ragnarok.

This week on The Absurdly Nerd Podcast Cole and Eric put together a super fun slate of topics to discuss with Murley away for this episode.

They started the show with a deep dive on the Mafia game series as a whole. From the recent Mafia Remake to the critical darling Mafia 2 to Mafia 3 which some would say was a disappointing direction for the series and then they closed the topic by laying out what they expect and hope for from the recently confirmed Mafia 4.

Following that, the guys got into the big topic of the day which was focused on video game collecting and video game collector's editions. 2019 was a year of many good to great games but lacked those massive powerhouse releases of a year like 2018 with God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 or 2020 with The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.

However, as a whole, this Top 10 was very solid with very little space between any of the entries compared to our previous lists.

From a new installment in a legendary fighting game series to an expertly crafted remake of fan favorite classic kart racing game… From the return of Obsidian Entertainment to the return of Hideo Kojima… From a new entry in the series that spawned the entire looter shooter genre to a couple of stellar games from Respawn Entertainment… 2019 delivered many memorable experiences for all kinds of gamers to enjoy.

The year 2020 was a spectacular year for video games. All throughout this year we saw massive releases as well as surprise masterpieces from indie developers. Triple A blockbusters such as Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons brought incredible levels of hype to the year. Meanwhile, the success of games like Spiritfarer, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Hades punched well above their budgets and established themselves as some of the best games ever.

This week on The Absurdly Nerd Podcast the guys delve into some of what they believe the Negative Side Effects of Game Pass. 

Dead Island 2 got leaked on Amazon and has since been confirmed by way of GamesCom on Tuesday August 23rd. 

They also discuss Embracer Group coming out of seemingly nowhere to own the rights to big properties such as Lord of the Rings and Gearbox's non-Borderlands IP.  This hold over 100 studios at this point so it makes us pose the question to ourselves: Should we view this conglomerate as a force of good or evil in the video game industry? 

Big news came in that there will be the first ever Marvel/Disney Video Game Showcase on September 9th. The guys discussed the various games that we could see at this show. From Marvel's known games in the works such as Spiderman 2, Black Panther, Midnight Suns, and Wolverine to Star Wars games like Jedi: Survivor, Hunters, Eclipse and Ubisoft's open world Star Wars game to Disney titles like Starlight Valley and Disney Speedracers, we could see a large number of games at this showcase even if it only ends up being games previously shown to us.

This week we decided to try something new. WELCOME to Absurdly Nerd's MetaCritic Rankings Game Show. How well do you know video game review scores?!

This game presents contestants with 5 games all grouped together by some similarity and the goal is to rank them from best to worst based purely off of snap judgment, according to their MetaCritic score.

The idea with this game show is that everyone likes to review and rank games. Having your own opinion about a game is what makes video games amazing but it's also fun to see if you can guess what the consensus is for some games versus other games. Think of it as video game Family Feud.

This episode is the beginning of our Year in Review series. We plan on traveling backward through prominent video game years and assessing, reviewing and ranking  the most impactful releases between both hardware and software.

You can expect drama between the three of us as we lay out each list, which will be compiled from the composite lists of all three Absurdly Nerd hosts.

In this episode we broke down our top 10 from 2021. There were some heavy hitting releases from Resident Evil 8 to Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, from Psychonauts 2 to It Takes Two, and from Death's Door to Forza Horizon 5. There was something for every gamer in 2021.
