Do you remember your first major interior design project?

Every designer remembers that first moment when everything shifts.
For me, it happened in a tiny 9 square meter student room, sitting under my loft bed, still wearing my waiter uniform, refreshing my inbox before rushing to a charity dinner shift.

And then it appeared.
A new inquiry.
A complete apartment renovation.
From someone who believed I had a real design studio… when in reality, my “office” was squeezed between a sink and a sofa bed.

In this personal story, I take you back to the night that email came in, the disbelief, the excitement, the fear, and the courage it took to simply say yes.

You will hear about:
• starting from nothing and believing anyway
• navigating impostor syndrome as a young designer
• the moment I decided to stop doubting myself
• how showing up opens doors you didn’t know existed
• why your circumstances never define your potential

This episode is a reminder that every designer starts somewhere.
Sometimes in a beautiful studio.
Sometimes under a loft bed with a five euro bicycle waiting outside.

What matters is that you take the step.
Because one email can change everything.

Listen, feel, and remember your own first project.
Your journey deserves to be celebrated too.

And for the interior designers who want more...

You ever feel like a screwdriver?

Like you’re just executing — sourcing, quoting, fixing — instead of being valued for your design vision?

Because honestly, I’ve been there too. Running around, trying to realize a client’s dream project… only to feel like the least important part of the process.
Until I realized: I was doing it the wrong way.

This episode is a raw and honest conversation with showroom sales trainer Deborah Flate — someone who’s been on both sides of the table. As a designer. And as a showroom manager. And she gets it.

We talk about:
• Why transparency isn’t scary — it’s your superpower
• How to stop hiding margins and start owning your value
• The magic that happens when you share the full story with your dealer
• What “being the expert” really means in a world where everyone can Google your product
• Why clarity builds trust — and trust builds your entire business
• And what happens when you stop chasing small wins… and start building a bigger game, beyond interior design

“Don’t be the screwdriver. You’re not just selling a couch — you’re transforming lives. But only if you stop hiding and start leading.”

If you recognize yourself in this — the tension between your design vision and the business side — this one’s for you.

And honestly? This is one you’d better listen to than read.
So hit play. And enjoy.

We were almost finished with the last co-design session.
The design felt right, the ideas were flowing, and the clients were excited.
Then the gentleman across the table said, “I miss the sex.”
And suddenly, everything took on a new meaning.

The room fell silent. I didn’t know what to say.
But when we slowed down, asked deeper questions, and truly listened, something unexpected revealed itself.

It wasn’t about romance.
It was about excitement, passion, and freedom.
About rediscovering the emotional core behind every design decision.

This moment reminded me once again that design is never just about aesthetics. It’s about emotions, memories, and creating spaces that make people feel.

That’s what our philosophy Form Follows Meaning truly means.
And it’s what makes design unforgettable.

If you enjoy more of these personal stories, moments that shaped me as a designer and remind us all why we do what we do, let me know.
Because I’d love to share more of them alongside our interviews and conversations on Beyond Interior Design.

Well, it’s better to listen than to read here… so enjoy!

If you don’t know me yet, I’m Marc Muskens, born with a fanatical obsession for interior design! Together with my friend and business partner Sven van Buuren, I’m the owner of interior design firm Masters of Interior Design and we’re the founders of The Institute of Interior Impact; with a community - as we speak - over 165.000 interior design professionals.
It’s a global Institute where we connect and train interior designers from around the world. I care a great deal about ‘how’ it looks, but I’m even more interested in ‘why’ it’s looks like that.

That's why we started this podcast: Beyond Interior Design.

We will invite inspiring interior design experts that have a great story to tell and love to dig deeper. Of course we would like to surround ourselves in a beautiful environment, but the higher goal or purpose is creating designs that contribute: designed for the long term.

Our environment has a huge impact on us as human beings. On how we live, how we work, how we play… how we act, react, behave… how we grow. Together we have the power to design this world. And in my opinion: Who has the power, has the responsibility.

We are the #changemakers of the world. We have always been, through all of humanity. Look at the Egyptian empire, the pyramids. And what about the Roman empire? More than 2000 years later, people still come to Rome to admire the might and strength of Roman architecture and design. And it all started with an idea… Every single building started with an idea, a sketch from a creative mind. We can ‘decide’ to make a change.

So, what does the interior design future look like? Together we can shape it. We have the power to not only shape our own future, but the future of the world we live in.
As you know, change comes in waves. Sometimes rapidly and sometimes slowly. Well… the world around us is changing rapidly, we know that! But does our profession?

We’re going to explore exiting combinations of interior design and health, interior design and technology, psychology, sustainability, culture, nature, entrepreneurship and for sure other sometimes unknown areas. We’re going to fly high and dive deep. And straight through if we have to.

Are you ready to discover the world Beyond Interior Design?
