The Teacher Story : Recent Episodes

Jackie Scully

A podcast about the teacher journey and ideas for education reform. Jackie Scully, an experienced educator, is flipping the script when it comes to education and focusing on the teacher's voice. These voices are often overlooked in society, and many decisions are made without teacher input. The education system is in need of major repair, and there needs to be a mind shift. That mind shift starts by listening to the ones that work directly with children. The pandemic highlighted so many social issues, and now the spotlight is on education. The teachers are ready to take center stage and share their voice. Now is the time! This podcast starts with a kickoff episode sharing my own story, and then 1 teacher interview will be posted each week on Sundays. Understanding the Captain and Poet:

The Captain: The Captain is the part of us that ventures out into the world, navigates challenges, sets goals, makes decisions, and takes us on new adventures.

The Poet: The Poet embodies everything that stirs deep inside of us – our emotions, imagination, values, aspirations, dreams, and more.

Unique in Each of Us: Everyone’s Captain and Poet are unique, with key traits that define us. For example, your Captain might be bold, and your Poet might be creative. They adapt and show up differently across various contexts like school, work, and home, evolving as we grow.

Better Together: In partnership, the Captain and Poet help us to be our best, most authentic selves. The Captain encourages the Poet to be expressive and chase dreams, while the Poet reminds the Captain of what is most important, blending awareness with action and vision with strategy.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child serves as a universally recognized framework for promoting and safeguarding children's rights. Despite being 75 years since the launch of Human Rights and 35 years since countries ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, many children are still unaware of their rights. Governments, communities, and corporations are increasingly raising awareness and engaging citizens to fulfill their responsibilities.

Today, I am thrilled to have a special guest, Fardeen Blaq, on The Teacher Story Podcast. After receiving the Diana Award in 2020 and being nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2021 and 2023, Fardeen, along with his sister, started @KikaoCultures. Through this initiative, they are teaching their peers at government-run children's centers in Nairobi and worldwide, employing Project-Based Learning to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

As the Co-Founder of KikaoCultures, his mission is to showcase the magic of multi-stakeholder partnerships at the country level. He believes that these collaborations can yield extraordinary results in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. I interviewed Lauren Lumm, a former teacher who worked in the NYC school district, worked as a teacher in Maine, and is now working for Outschool. She is an activist who cares about social justice in education, and making sure that all voices and perspectives are represented in the curriculum. She went to Washington D.C. for a “Save Our Schools” and “Occupy the DOE” protest with letters from her students about how they felt about test prep. Lauren went from teaching in a very progressive school in Brooklyn, and then moved to Maine and had a completely different experience. She used the push back she received in her school to propel her to get out of the classroom and now work with students online teaching civics. A couple of quotes that stood out to me and represent Lauren and her work: “I want to be an advocate of the truth." and “You have to get comfortable with getting uncomfortable.” This is a powerful conversation about teachers standing up for themselves and speaking their minds. We cannot be afraid to share our voices. I love Lauren's conviction and passion for teaching truth! Lauren's information is below in the show notes.
